Engine of the Future – Under this motto the 64th International Automobile Exhibition is being held in Hanover from September 20 to 27. This year again, Schmitz Cargobull is presenting a range of innovations associated with the efficient transport of various goods in transit. We look forward to meeting you! No. 39 SCHMITZ CARGOBULL SUCCESSFUL THREE TIMES IN A ROW “Blue Elephant” cleans up Three times within just a few weeks Schmitz Cargobull has achieved top positions in renowned business and industry awards: “Best Brand 2012”, second place in “The Best Factory 2012” and finalist in the “Supply Chain Management Award 2012.” “Our teams never take their foot off the pedal,” says Chairman of the Board Ulrich Schümer, who is delighted at the latest successes. Pharmaserv-certified refrigerated semitrailers can be recognised by the sticker attached in a visible location on the vehicle. Certified for the Transport of Pharmaceutical Products Few industries require higher safety standards for the transport of raw materials or finished products than the pharmaceutical industry. For this reason Germany’s independent consulting and service firm Pharmaserv has certified the temperature-controlled S.KO COOL semi-trailer container produced by Schmitz Cargobull for hygienesensitive work. T his certification proves to the customer that the trailer offers high product quality and transport safety. The first customer for the trailer is the transport company SWIFT Logistics from Langenfeld in Germany, which also provided assistance and support during the two-week certification process. Collection and analysis of the data was carried out by data loggers of m o ll.c u ob rg w .ca w w Pharmaserv and the Cargobull trailer telematics system “TrailerConnect®” installed by SWIFT-Logistik in the trailer. This made it possible to permanently check, protocol and review the data from the test phase, such as the cooling temperature, as well as the technical data for the cooling equipment. The certification process was carried out at the Schmitz Cargobull production factory for semi-trailer containers in Vreden. In 14 days the S.KO COOL trailer belonging to SWIFT-Logistik, equipped with TrailerConnect®, was tested under the harshest conditions. The trailer, cooling unit and ancillary equipment were exposed to temperatures between -25 and +35°C in the company’s own cooling tunnel. For the continuous monitoring and control of the cooling data, Pharmaserv placed a total of 24 data loggers in various locations within the trailer. In addition, permanent external monitoring was carried out via the TrailerConnect®portal. The result: the values specified by Pharmaserv, such as a good insulation value for the body, homogeneous temperature distribution, special hygiene Continue on PAGE 2 www.cargobull.com M ore than 8,000 readers chose Schmitz Cargobull as the “Best Brand” in the trailers category for ETM Publishing’s prestigious Image Award. Just a few days before, WirtschaftsWoche magazine announced that the Vreden plant for box vehicles had landed in second place just behind BMW in the competition for “The Best Factory 2012”. And in April the Cargobull Altenberge plant made it to the final round of the Supply Chain Management Awards 2012. “The diversity of the awards shows that we set benchmarks in various fields,” said Ulrich Schümer, praising the company’s employees. The Chairman of the Board considers ETM Publishing’s Image Award a particularly out- standing success. “This Brand Award is very important to us,” says Ulrich Schümer. “Because the assessment stems directly from our customers – i.e. from fleet managers, drivers and hauliers in the field.” With the award, the “Blue Elephant” of Schmitz Cargobull now ranks for the third time in the same group as the serial winners, Mercedes-Benz and MAN. For the 16th time in succession, the readers of three ETM trade journals voted on the best commercial vehicles in 22 categories, with winners determined in partnership with German safety specialist DEKRA. Readers submit their verdict on the brands and products which have impressed them. The results therefore provide a practical insight into the Werner Bicker (left, Managing Director of the ETM publishing company) and Ulrich Schümer (right, CEO Schmitz Cargobull) at the awards ceremony. product policy and brand positioning within the industry. (ae) Altenberge plant in the final round With its holistic, integrated Supply Chain Management concept, Schmitz Cargobull AG’s plant in Altenberge reached the final round of the Supply Chain Management Award 2012. This is presented by PwC’s PRTM Management Consulting in cooperation with the trade magazine LOGISTIK HEUTE, the House of Logistics and Mobility (HOLM) and the Supply Chain Management Institute (SMI). Innovative value-added chains are essential for global commercial enterprises. This was the seventh time that the Supply Chain Management Award for outstanding solutions for industrial value-added chains was presented. The Schmitz Cargobull plant in Vreden came second in the ranking for “The Best Factory 2012,” just behind BMW. The performance comparison of manufacturing facilities is held every year by the “WirtschaftsWoche” magazine, as well as representatives of the renowned business schools WHU (Germany), Insead (France), IESE (Spain), Judge (UK) and RSM Erasmus (Netherlands). Amongst other things, the jury praised the continuing optimisation of the cycle times. Further criteria were the business model, strategy implementation, value-added chain, product and process development, service and customer integration, as well as general continuous improvement. Here, road transport plays an important role. Through its reliability and creativity, Eurotranspharma from France has become the leading transport company in this special market, which is characterised by strict requirements, in just one year. E urotranspharma was established on March 1, 2011 after the takeover of the firm Translab founded by Jean-Paul Baudry (from the transport division of CSP) and Laboratoire Marc Laine. With its three distribution centres, 12 regional agencies and other planned openings, as well as 130 customers from the laboratory field and 3 million deliveries per year in France, Eurotranspharma has today become a preferred partner in this industry sector. With its specialised distribution network for the non-refrigerated and temperaturecontrolled transport of sensitive products, the company serves the needs of hospitals, pharmaceutical wholesalers, pharmacies and other stakeholders in healthcare – comprehensively, competently and with competitive prices. Like all major European countries, France has an efficient transport system which is committed to the European rules of good distribution practices for pharmaceutical products, compliance with which is expected from the entire branch of industry. This has also induced Eurotranspharma to agree on industrial collaboration with the German transport company Trans-O-Flex Thermomed. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry in both countries has a common provider at its disposal which they can entrust with their products for temperaturecontrolled transport at +2° to +8°C in 6 European countries. “Temperature-controlled transport has become the standard in France for the temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products, and the pharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly demanding European-wide solutions,” explains Stéphane Baudry, President of Eurotranspharma, whose European network today has 5 distribution centres and 48 regional agencies in Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Austria. Thanks to this new organisation it has been possible to acquire 20 new customers within a very short time. The fleet, which consists of 730 vehicles from heavy-duty trucks to small vans, is monitored by satellite during the delivery journeys, not only for position determination, but also to monitor the temperatures. Customers can also access information on the goods in real time via the Internet. It was therefore decided for the refrigerated semi-trailers to purchase products made by Schmitz Cargobull, with which the company has already acquired plenty of positive experience. “We know the quality of the trailers. In addition, we need special equipment, because our semi-trailer containers with two temperature zones, including double-decker systems, transport pharmaceutical products between 2°C and 8°C and between 15°C and 25°C. The fact that the plant in Vreden was the first to receive the Cemafroid performance certificate was for us further proof of their reliability and also played a role in our decision,” explains Stéphane Baudry. R ough terrain, extreme loads or highly abrasive bulk material: the semi-trailer tippers S.KI 24 S 8.2 with steel box body and S.KI 24 3 AT 9.6 with steel semi-circular body are ideal for the rough conditions in Eastern Europe. The greatest possible driving safety is ensured by the electronic braking system (EBS), which is equipped with durable and high-performance drum brakes. The integrated Roll Stability Program (RSP) minimises – as far as this is physically possible – the risk of the trailer tilting over. The system intervenes if the semi-trailer corners too fast and stabilises it in critical driving situations. Andreas Schmitz, Schmitz Cargobull’s Director of Sales for Central and Eastern Europe, sees the new semi-trailer tippers presented at CTT as being evidence of the high level of importance which the company places on the market in Eastern Europe and the requirements of the carriers located there. The family of X-LIGHT curtainsider semi-trailers are the all-rounders for improved performance and cost efficiency. A ll Schmitz Cargobull curtainsiders are certified according to DIN EN 12642 (CODE XL). All vehicles can also be optionally ordered with a certificate for the transport of beverages. The user can transport goods in the case of a complete form-fitting load without any additional load securing measures. In addition to the low weight, the main advantage of the design is the high level of functionality and the highest possible degree of safety for transport and the load itself. As a result, the tractors do not have to tow too much empty trailer weight. This lowers the cost of fuel for the tractor, especially in the case of frequent acceleration and braking on short-haul routes. The basis of the construction of these vehicles is the MODULOS® chassis, which consists of individual components that are not welded but F With the curtainsiders from the X-LIGHT family the tractors do not have to move excess weight. bolted together. The COIL X-LIGHT can cope easily with point loads of up to 30 tonnes at the load centre of 1.5 metres. The coil well covers provide a flat loading surface, so that the vehicle can be varied to accommodate a variety of other transport requirements. (sh) “Breakdown Cover” meets rising demand for fixed-price breakdown services As with the big names in the market such as ADAC or service 24, the demand for fixedprice offers for roadside assistance is also increasing at Schmitz Cargobull. “It is almost impossible for anyone to accurately budget for breakdown costs,” explains Graduate Engineer Peter-Hendrik Kes, Managing Director of Cargobull Parts & Services, “which is why it is important for us to provide the customer with a certain degree of security with our “Breakdown Cover” and allow them to budget for the risks in their daily business”. C argobull Parts & Services (CPS) GmbH has been offering its European-wide breakdown protection package known as “Breakdown Cover” since 2010. Last year alone, the number of contracts with the defined performance and cost package doubled. In general, customers with a full service agreement from Schmitz Cargobull receive free of charge the breakdown assistance for issues caused by wear and tear, as part of the Cargobull Euroservice. For all customers without the repair and maintenance agreement, CPS offers the separate Europewide “Breakdown Cover” breakdown service. The basic package comprises arranging roadside assistance and a payment guarantee for Cargobull Euroservice, as well as all labour and travel costs. Functional and Partnership-based Ludwig Meyer Co. is one of the leading fresh produce logistics providers. For its motor vehicle bodies and semi-trailers the Friedrichsdorf-based company has for years used Schmitz Cargobull, and today also Cargobull Telematics to control its fleet. Examples of the payload calculation: Permitted Total Weight Ludwig Meyer GmbH & Co. KG is the exclusive supplier to BURGER KING® and other system caterers. As an option, material and tyre costs (including new tyres) can be included in the package. This “allround carefree package” means that the customer can budget more accurately by means of fixed instalments, and avoid unexpected costs. The handling could not be easier. The driver only has to report the breakdown to Cargobull Euroservice and Cargobull Parts & Services takes care of the rest: rapid assistance, verification of the invoice and payment. A further advantage: upon the conclusion of a Breakdown Cover agreement for a new Schmitz Cargobull body or trailer, the basic package and material costs are free for the first year! (sh) or more than 60 years the fleet, which is easily recognisable thanks to the red “LM” logo in a grey circle, has been on the road. Founded in 1949, the company set the course in the early 1960s towards becoming one of the largest German – and today also European – service providers, working in the field of fresh produce logistics. The customer base includes almost all renowned German food chain stores. Ludwig Meyer GmbH & Co. KG is the exclusive supplier to BURGER KING® and other system caterers. With more than 1,500 employees and a huge road transport fleet that contains more than 1,200 units, the company has grown into one of the “big players” in the industry. “Our vehicle fleet is impressive,” says Managing Director Matthias Strehl, not without pride. “550 rigid vehicles with two and three axles, 250 trucks with trailers and load-through facility, as well as 500 semi-trailer combinations with all possible axle configurations – not to mention various special vehicles, are in everyday use. For the chassis and the bodies we only use products made by premium suppliers. “All vehicles are equipped with FRC box bodies and we place special emphasis on a sophisticated vertical and horizontal load securing system that avoids costly breakages and has given us a very good reputation for controls. “We also equip all vehicles with rear view cameras as standard, as well as a third, high-position brake light in order to improve safety,” says Strehl in defining the corporate philosophy. The symbol of the famous Schmitz Cargobull blue elephant adorns a large share of the motor vehicle bodies, as well as the towed units. “With Cargobull we have had a relationship based on partnership for more than 20 years – you could almost say we have grown up together,” explains Strehl. The Managing Director appreciates above all the good sales team, which is always available to him, and which fulfils the requirements with their solution-oriented activities. In many cases the vehicles and bodies are so-called multi-compartment vehicles with multi-tempera- ture units and at least two evaporators. Variable partition wall systems allow the cargo space to be divided in accordance with requirements. As usual in temperature-controlled transport, Ludwig Meyer GmbH & Co. KG ensures complete temperature tracking via data loggers for its customers, as well as its own materials planning and data backup. For the new trailers and semi-trailers, Meyer Logistik uses TrailerConnect® from Cargobull Telematics. “By using a consolidation platform, we can combine the data from our various telematic suppliers in one system and do not have to work on different platforms. For this reason it is easy and convenient for us to order the corresponding telematics systems directly from the manufacturer’s factory,” explains Matthias Strehl. As a rule Meyer Logistik uses its trailers and semi-trailers for 10 to 12 years and carries out all of the necessary repairs in the company’s two workshops or partner companies with it cooperates. “Taking this long service life into consideration, we have few breakdowns with the trailers made by Schmitz Cargo- An Overview of Meyer Logistik www.meyer-logistik.com Founded: 1949; in the early 1960s transformation into an internationally active supplier of logistics for fresh products. Looking ahead and reaping the benefits In spite of the economic downturn and reduced credit lines, Cargobull Finance offers tailor-made financial solutions. T Francisco Guerrero (owner of Talleres Guerrero) receiving the “ServicePartner of the Year” award from Jean-Claude Peiffer (After Sales Manager South-West Europe). Quality Offensive in Spain Francisco Guerrero lives according to his motto: progress and modernisation. Because he always wants to offer his customers the best service, he has completely modernised his workshop business Talleres Guerrero in the Spanish town of Azuqueca de Henares (Guadalajara) and can now call himself the incumbent “Cargobull Service Partner of the Year” in Spain. G he financial crisis began in 2008 in the USA and led to a global economic downturn. Despite the signs of recovery in the years 2010 and 2011, the financial crisis has developed into a combined bank and sovereign debt crisis, particularly in Europe, the effects of which still dominate the daily news agenda. Consumer confidence in the economy is low, so that the propensity of customers to invest and consume is also low. This has consequences for transport volumes – from production to the sales channels. Transport companies in many European countries are confronted with declining demand for transport and logistics services. Reduced credit lines uerrero has invested heavily in the construction of a much larger workshop facility. Furthermore, he has modernised all of his machines and tools and created optimum training facilities for the education and training of his staff in his new rooms. Guerrero currently employs 20 people. The businessman states that their commitment and responsibility are the real driving forces behind the fact that the company is running and expanding so successfully. “We want to continue to grow and the best reward for our efforts is the satisfaction of our customers and suppliers, but also the employees,” explains Francisco Guerrero. “Our ultimate goal is the provision of high-quality support and reliability to our customers. We have gained a major leap of faith through the individual and customer-oriented processing of each individual order. Moreover, we have learned to treat new customers with the same attention and the same level of commitment as our existing customer base.” Guerrero’s overriding principle is the fastest possible acceptance and execution of orders. “Which is made much easier for us through our extensive stocks, the good education of our employees and the experience at our disposal,” he says. The Talleres Guerrero family business was founded in 1983 by its owner Francisco Guerrero, after he had acquired 15 years of professional experience in the industry. “The beginning was hard,” recalls the Senior Partner. “But thanks to our outstanding performance we have finally made a name for ourselves. Meanwhile, the next generation has already begun working for the company, which has enlarged its scope of services through the application of new ideas. “We went for continu- ous development and innovation, as well as service quality, ethics and morality in our business dealings. Regrettably, the latter are not so easy to find in this day and age,” Guerrero adds. The scope of services comprises repair, maintenance, a spare parts service and trade-in of used vehicles. The workshop carries out all repairs to trailers and semi-trailers. These include axle and chassis repairs, the repair and maintenance of all components and accessories, as well as bodywork and accident repairs - including work on the straightening bench. The service is supplemented by repairs to tractors, especially brake repairs, a tyre service and work on fifth wheels. The business includes an extensive stock of spare parts with direct sales. On request, Guerrero sends the required spare parts to anywhere in Spain, as well as abroad. “As we belong to a network of original equipment manufacturers in the field of axles and brakes, we can offer numerous spare parts for prices below those of the competitors,” Guerrero explains. “With our stocks we can offer Schmitz Cargobull a fast customer service and above all, provide parts immediately which are covered by the guarantee. Our customers therefore don’t have to wait until parts arrive from Altenberge.” According to the Managing Director, the sale of spare parts runs quickly and smoothly: “Spare part programs such as EPOS make it easier to choose and name the parts to avoid errors when ordering. In the areas of customer service and full service, the permanent communication and convenience offered by the Internet ensures that orders can be processed quickly and there is no delay for customers when resolving complaints,” he says. (ae) www.cargobull.com As a result of the crisis, legislators are changing the rules for the banking sector in particular in order to avoid similar recurrences in the future. One example of this is the Basel III reforms, which place the banks under an obligation to increase their capital stocks. This in turn has the consequence that the banks are no longer so willing to provide their customers with loans. The opportunities for obtaining finance René Roelfsema, Managing Director of Cargobull Finance, has been there from the beginning and knows the transport industry very well. René Roelfsema, Managing Director of Cargobull Finance, explains: “We at Cargobull Finance are an integral part of the services offered by Schmitz Cargobull. As a result of this integration we know the trailers – and of course the industry – very well. In addition, we belong to a sound and reliable subsidiary of the Rabobank. We are therefore able to offer most Schmitz Cargobull customers appropriate financing solutions.” The advantages of the group’s solution “But our experience and our knowledge of the transport sector is not the only reason for the high rate of loan commitments,” Roelfsema continues. “The customers of Schmitz Cargobull have – like the customers of all transport companies – a great interest in improving their costeffectiveness and profitability. In this, a high level of liquidity, calculable costs and tax advantages play an important role when it comes to financing an investment. The added value which is offered by the overall service package of Schmitz Cargobull, such as financing, trailer telematics, the supply of spare parts, full-service agreements, breakdown cover, the used vehicle trade, etc., makes it possible for the forwarding agent to achieve these objectives. Cargobull Finance can combine these beneficial services into one comprehensive and flexible solution.” As a subsidiary of Schmitz Cargobull AG, Cargobull Finance is showing that it is a positive exception to the current mentality of the banks. Here, the outstanding knowledge of the market and experience of the transport industry is proving its worth. To date, Cargobull Finance has already financed more than 65,000 trailers. Roelfsema adds another major advantage: “In the evaluation of the loan applications we take into account not only our knowledge and experience, but also the impact of additional services which are included by the customer. We therefore have a high acceptance rate and provide optimum are limited and will be reduced even further in the future. Liquidity is becoming a scarce commodity. Banks need to examine very carefully which company they give a loan to. Some have reduced their business in the transport sector, or even decided to completely discontinue their commercial activities in this field. The customers of Cargobull are also starting to feel the the instability of the financial industry. support to Schmitz Cargobull customers with their financing requirements. And we do this, also, under difficult market conditions. In its decision, Cargobull Finance does of course take into account the soundness of the customer, but can also rely on the high value of the Schmitz Cargobull trailers. Market developments, management experience etc. are also factors which are included. From this it is possible to develop tailor-made financial solutions together with the customer. A tip from financial specialist Roelfsema I am often asked: “How can customers best cope with these economic challenges?” And I always answer: “Diversify your income streams, so you are not dependent on a single financial partner. This allows you to work together with partners who are well acquainted with the branch of industry and the required financing products. The financing and service products offered via Cargobull Finance can represent a key element in this.” More information about Cargobull Finance can be obtained from your Schmitz Cargobull distributor or at www.cargobull.com (ae) T h e Tr a i l e r C o m p a n y . But not with André Pecqueur, a dynamic individual, who recently received the Entrepreneur Award 2011 for the Northern Region for his work as the Chairman of the Brasserie de Saint-Omer. Until 1999 TSA’s most important task was to deliver the products which were made in the breweries of André Pecqueur. But it quickly became more attractive for the boss to work increasingly as a transport and logistics service provider. F or example, one of the business strategies was to offer storage capacities for the evergrowing customer base, so that TSA created over 60,000 m² of warehouse space. With the opening of a branch in the north of the UK in 2001 the movement of goods across the Channel increased to such an extent that it now represents 70% of the company’s transport services. In 2010 the business was expanded to the Benelux countries and the vehicle fleet further enlarged. Today the company operates within a radius of 700 kilometres around its historic headquarters in Saint-Omer (France). The fleet has also grown from year to year and today comprises 220 tractors and 330 curtainsiders with theft-proof tarpaulins. Today TSA employs approximately 350 people, including a large proportion of UK drivers. It’s a European company that it is very demanding in its choice of partners. “We have semi-trailers in use by our customers and owing to the high level of use, we depend on utmost reliability. That is why we have decided on Schmitz Cargobull,” explains Patrick Wecxteen, Head of the Transport and Logistics Divisions. That is our guarantee that we will not have any problems during our daily operations,” says Patrick Wecxteen - although technical problems, as Mr Wecxteen confirms, are rare anyway thanks to the robust construction of the Schmitz Cargobull semi-trailers. TSA has proven loyal not only in the selection of the supplier for its semi-trailers, but also with respect to tractors: The company relies primarily on DAF vehicles. (sh) ven today, a beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz with rounded bonnet adorns the vehicle fleet of the logistics service provider in the Slovenian town of Nazarje. The vehicle stems from the early days of the company when Franc Pfeifer started his haulage business. Conveniently located in the geographical triangle between Klagenfurt, Ljubljana and Maribor, the location offered good conditions for growth. Pfeifer operates 55 of his own vehicles, employs a staff of over 80 and has his own car wash, his own filling station and a workshop - and now even his own solar power plant. Pfeifer began with international transport in the 1990s, and since 2000 the company has been offering its customers a wide range of warehousing services with its own storage space totalling 10,000 square metres. The turnover last year amounted to over nine million euros, and the figure is increasing. The Pfeifer company philosophy includes reliability and partnerships based on trust. For several years Schmitz Cargobull has been a partner and supplier in the field of trailers, tandem axle trailers and rigid bodies. The fleet now consists exclusively of vehicles which meet or exceed Euro 5 standards. The Pfeifer rolling equipment currently consists of 33 jumbo vehicle combinations, including 28 road trains for the transport of swap bodies. There are 11 semi-trailer combinations and various distribution trucks with loading ramps. All vehicles are equipped with a fleet management system. The materials planning department and customers have continuous access to the corresponding geodata. Pfeifer puts great emphasis on the education and training of the drivers and employees in the areas of vehicle and cargo security, as well as transport optimisation. Major clients include DHL, Bosch and the Siemens Home Appliances Group (B/S/H), Danfoss and the Slovenian manufacturer of large household appliances Gorenje. “The standards according to which we act are good pricing, reliability, quality, flexibility, environmental friendliness and the potential for further development,” explains company boss Franc Pfeifer. “These are maxims which we guarantee our customers and which we naturally expect from our suppliers. That is why we also work together with Schmitz Cargobull. The trailers, semi-trailers and bodies are quality products for fair market prices, with good residual values.” (tt) www.cargobull.com 6 CARGOBULL NEWS · SPECIAL · NO. 39 T h e Tr a i l e r C o m p a n y . STEEL ALL-ROUNDER Good Business with Clothes Schmitz Cargobull has expanded its range of MEGA S.PL flatbed trailers to include a multifunctional steel box body known as S.PL STEEL BOX – optionally equipped with double-decker loading equipment, or for the transport of hanging clothes. Top quality at a fair market price - that was only one reason for deciding on the semi-trailers made by Schmitz Cargobull. A Perfect Combination Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics and subsidiary Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal operate the new Hohenbudberg intermodal transport terminal in Duisburg. Currently the panEuropean logistics network operator is putting new rail-transportable trailers made by Schmitz Cargobull into service. S amskip is one of the leading pan-European logistics service providers and uses every imaginable version of multimodal transport in its work. A new field of operation for the subsidiary Samskip Van Dieren is rail transport via the intermodal hub “duisport”. After an investment of more than €20 million, the new terminal in Duisburg has some 120,000 square metres at its disposal in the final expansion phase, seven train-length tracks and two gantry cranes. “Samskip has decided to invest in Duisburg and set up business there. Our commitment to the terminal in Hohenbudberg is an integral part of our strategy of developing a pan-European multimodal network of water, rail, inland waterways and roads,” explains Jens Holger Nielsen, CEO at Samskip Multimodal Container Logistics. “With this we are ensuring that in the operational field we have control and flexibility and that in this way our pan-European multimodal network can continue to grow.” Even before the commitment to Duisburg, Samskip was one of the largest container transport companies in Europe. The company operates multimodal container logistics and container services in Europe - as far away as Iceland and the Faroe Islands, as well as worldwide shipments to 24 countries across the globe. One of the specialities is global refrigerated container transport. The network of firms includes renowned companies such as the Dutch Geest North Sea Line, Kloosterboer, Van Dieren Maritime, Jónar Transport, Frigocare, Icepak, as well as partners of Coolboxx and Silver Sea - most of which are now all combined under the Samskip brand. Most shipments of Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal are carried out with 45-foot containers, refrigerated containers, sliding canvas containers and semi-trailers. The latter originate mainly from Schmitz Cargobull. “When we selected the vehicles, three things were particularly important to us: top quality at a fair price, reliability and proven performance - we did not want the cheapest trailers, but the best overall value for money,” explains Sietse Grijpstra, Management Assistant at Samskip Van Dieren Multimodal. “Schmitz Cargobull was able to supply us with exactly what we were expecting!” “We have a number of requirements which the off-the-shelf products do not fulfil without restrictions. The Design and Sales departments at Schmitz Cargobull considered together with us how we could optimise the trailers in such a way that the functionality matched our operational requirements. For pan-European use it is not very easy to design piggyback semi-trailers which can be used on all railways and in all systems without restriction. But ultimately, Schmitz Cargobull was able to supply us with exactly what we were expecting!” www.cargobull.com (tt) C lothes and fashion are big business today. What is still en vogue today will be out tomorrow. According to statistics, each of us uses more than 15 kg of clothes every year. At the same time, the trade in clothes means logistics tasks are also required: clothes are imported or exported and have to be distributed and transported within the country to distribution centres or department stores. Modern logistics for global transport not only bridge distances, but also include the provision of demandoriented means of transport. With the S.PL STEEL BOX Schmitz Cargobull is responding to increased enquiries for solutions for the transport of clothing to North Africa. The vehicle, which is produced at the Schmitz Cargobull works in Saragossa for the South-west European market, can be optionally configured with double-decker loading equipment or the transport of hanging clothes. The basis of this vehicle is the MEGA version of the S.PL flatbed trailer. The painted steel box body provides a clear internal height of 2,970 millimetres (with a rear passthrough height of 2,950 mm). Even with the optional double-decker loading equipment the clear loading width is still 2,480 millimetres. Since the launch of the latest hardware under the brand TrailerConnect® in 2010 alone, sales have almost doubled. “The system stands out due to its excellent reliability and the fact that it is very easy to retrofit and can be used for virtually all types of trailers,” says Managing Director Karl-Heinz Neu. Cargobull Telematics makes use of sophisticated technology, customer-oriented service and innovative project management. “Especially with the equipment of large vehicle fleets it is useful to integrate telematics data into an existing software infrastructure,” Neu adds. “With our standardised interfaces and an experienced project team, we offer our customers extensive support. In this way we guarantee that our customers can enjoy efficient use of the trailer telematics from the beginning.” IAA 2012 - New Products and Solutions “The demand for trailer telematics is rising just as quickly as the di- versity of the possible applications. It is therefore important for us to continue developing our products and services in line with the requirements of our customers,” says Dieter Honkomp, Technical Director of Cargobull Telematics. “In the next five years there are plans for the expansion of sales to new countries, as well as a large number of additional projects. An integrated solution for the networking of truck and trailer will provide the hauliers with genuine added value. In addition, with attractive products and services we will be pushing forward with the networking of the valueadded services of Schmitz Cargobull and at the same time expanding the one-stop shopping concept. Safe Transport of Fish Delicacies Mildaras Masilenis, Head of the Eastern Markets Transport Department at Vičiūnai Isotopes Services International (ISI), the market leader in the international distribution of sensitive items for the pharmaceutical industry, is using bodies made by Schmitz Cargobull for the first time. ISI T In 2011 his own transport company, ViciTrans, was founded. From the very beginning it was found that the mass transport of frozen fish products over long distances required a sophisticated transport system with the possibility of making precise adjustments and automatically constant and optimised temperature and humidity during transport. In 2012 the management of the Vičiūnai Group decided to purchase five S.KO COOL refrigerated semitrailers with a gross vehicle weight of up to 40 tonnes from Schmitz Cargobull. The numerous advantages and the good experience with the new refrigerated vehicles from Schmitz Cargobull have now led to the Vičiūnai Group considering the purchase of an additional 30 semi-trailers with the blue elephant. Mildaras Masilenis, Head of the Eastern Markets Transport Department, explains why the management of Vičiūnai opted to increase the size of its vehicle fleet with the S.KO COOL: “We have already gained a lot of varying expe- rience with the use of trailers and semi-trailers of various brands. Our detailed analysis showed that it was the semi-trailers of Schmitz Cargobull which fully satisfied the requirements we place on refrigeration technology for the transport of these highly perishable products, which semi-finished fish products are. Excellent value for money, low operating costs and a high degree of reliability are the factors which made us decide in favour of the S.KO COOL.” Increased environmental requirements make reductions in consumption and recyclability increasingly important. In the development of the new S.KO COOL the main focus was therefore to minimise downtimes due to repairs and save fuel through better aerodynamics and improved insulation. As a result it was possible to significantly improve not only the described measures, but also the handling. NEW 7 The First One for the Second Life The “Vičiūnai” group of companies, founded in 1991, is one of the largest producers of surimi products. The group supplies its products under the trademark “Vici” to over 47 countries. he “Vičiūnai” Group comprises 47 companies, which are located in different countries and employ more than 6,700 people. The refrigerated and frozen products are manufactured in their own factories. These are located in Plungė, Lithuania, and in Tallinn, Estonia, in Sowjetsk, Russia, and in a factory in Spain. Overall the Vičiūnai corporate group produces more than 120,000 tonnes of food products every year. Of these, over 80 per cent are exported. Punctual delivery of the fresh raw materials and finished products to the numerous customers in Europe is known to work only with the company’s own modern and highly professional transport system. Therefore, the Vičiūnai group of companies founded a specialist transport firm ViciTrans – a logistics company which has its own vehicle fleet with more than 50 tractors. This company provides the transport for the goods manufactured by the companies within the group to their destinations and also rents out transportation to the major trading centres. CARGOBULL NEWS · SPECIAL · NO. 39 is located in the heart of Europe, near Brussels. The Belgian company has developed a European network in order to collect sensitive products from customers and deliver them to the end customer within 24 hours in Belgium, or within 24 to 48 hours throughout Europe. In addition to the above-mentioned focus on sensitive and perishable goods, ISI specialise in the transport and logistics of radioactive goods and hazardous materials. The company is a founding member of the European Isotopes Transport Association (EITA) and has been certified to ISO 9001 since 2008. This makes it an ideal partner for the transport, storage and distribution of pharmaceutical and biological products, as well as goods from the areas of diagnostics. All ISI vehicles are designed for temperature-controlled transport. The fleet comprises 35 vans and trucks - from the small VW Caddy to the Mercedes-Benz Actros. 47 well-trained drivers - all with ADR certificates in hazardous goods transportation - transport the sensitive goods from and to the customer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The entire fleet is equipped with an instant POD tracking & tracing system which enables the company’s own materials planning department and the customer to track the goods, as well as maintenance of the cold chain. ISI documents all journeys by means of monthly “performance reports”. The latest vehicle in the fleet is a Mercedes-Benz Atego. “For the first time we have specified a body made by Schmitz Cargobull for the concept of one of our vehicles,” explains the fleet manager, Mss. Vandevordt. “The body is a 7.2 metre-long M.KO with 18 europallet spaces, Dhollandia tail lift and ThermoKing refrigeration unit. For reliable cargo protection the body has integrated lashing rails.” The first vehicle of its type with the blue elephant is soon to be followed by another one, which Schmitz Cargobull Belgium will supply to ISI. “Originally we had two domestic body manufacturers in the vehicle fleet, amongst others,” the fleet manager explains. “The M.KO made by Schmitz Cargobull is an attempt on our part to use a body for longer than the life of a vehicle. I know from experience that the M.KOs are very robust. Therefore it should be no problem to remount the box body on the chassis of the next truck. I also appreciate the fact that the body has a standard aluminium floor which is easy to clean. That is exactly what we need for our transport purposes.” (tt) (tt) Handover of the keys: from left to right Tom Michielssen (Schmitz Cargobull Belgium BVBA), Serge Goossens (Managing Director of Isotopes), Ms Vandevordt and Robin Van Droogenbroeck (Mercedes-Benz) IMPRINT Download app for Cargobull News No. 39 • Schmitz Cargobull Newsletter • Schmitz Cargobull videos • Used vehicle store • Service-Partner-Search The Customer Magazine of Schmitz Cargobull AG Publisher Schmitz Cargobull AG Postfach 109 · D-48609 Horstmar Responsible for Publication Gerd Rohrsen www.cargobull.com www.cargobull.com/iPhoneApp Editorial Staff A. CARGOBULL NEWS · SPECIAL · NO. 39 SUCCESSFULLY INTRODUCED In a Flash – semi-trailer with Speed Curtain Gudrun and Klaus Fischer (centre) at the handover of the new S.CS with Speed Curtain. Express means fast Regardless of whether a small package or a full load for the automotive industry – Eurotrans sees itself as an express service provider. If speed is paramount, the S.CS curtainsider semi-trailer with high-speed curtain technology is almost always the right choice. E urotrans Continental GmbH from Landsberg/Lech offers a range of services as varied as its vehicle fleet: around 50 vehicles – from small vans, through 7.5-tonners to the mega trailer, everything is represented. For a special logistics service, company owner Klaus Fischer even goes up into the air. The resourceful pilot operates not only his road transport company, but also the airline Planestar Aircharter. The company, which is conveniently located on the A96 motorway, has a broad line-up: national and international refrigerated logistics, full and part loads, as well as transport and supply logistics for the automotive industry. All vehicles are GPS-monitored. The latest acquisitions in the Eurotrans vehicle fleet are ten S.CS curtainsider semitrailers with a new quick release tarpaulin known as “Speed Curtain”, which company boss Klaus Fischer ordered after an extensive test phase at Schmitz Cargobull. Fischer uses the new semi-trailers for a major customer in the automotive industry. “Through the enormous time savings when opening and closing the curtain, as well as the way in which it makes our drivers’ work easier, I consider this to be a customer-oriented, stable and innovative investment in the future,” says the Eurotrans boss. In total, Eurotrans has 30 trailers in operation for a large supplier, with which it handles the entire factory logistics. The exact loading times of the vehicles are calculated by a GPS arrival system. In order to be able to meet the tight time windows at the loading and unloading stations, accurately calculated opening times for the tarpaulins are required. “By using the S.CS with its Speed Curtain we save around two to three hours a day compared to semi-trailers with conventional sliding tarpaulins!” Klaus Fischer has calculated. Before deciding in favour of the Speed Curtain body system he also looked at other quick-release tarpaulin options on the market. “In my opinion most of them have a problem with securing the cargo, and the handling of the tarpaulins is associated with a greater effort for the driver – particularly at low temperatures. The roller system, which is more complex than the standard sliding tarpaulin, is not considered a disadvantage by Fisher: “If they are properly cared for and maintained, they work perfectly.” Additional time savings are provided by the standard Code XL certificate. “As our loads are usually a positive fit, we don’t need any additional safety measures.” ❑ ❑ ❑ ❑ ❑ ❑ S.CS semitrailer curtainsider S.PR tilt semitrailer S.KO semitrailer container S.KI semitrailer tipper S.CF semitrailer container chassis S.PL flatbed semitrailer BY POST: BY FAX: W ith the S.CS Speed Curtain, Schmitz Cargobull reflects the spirit of the age with the need for fast loading times, because in times of tight loading windows and just-in-time delivery, every minute counts. On the one hand the travel times have to be complied with exactly although the traffic situations cannot be planned for, while on the other hand hauliers want to load their cargoes as quickly as possible and get the vehicle out of the yard. Although only central stanchions and plug-in slats have been required up to now, with the Speed Curtain the micro-stanchions integrated into the tarpaulin fulfil the body strength requirements of industry regulation DIN EN 12642 Code XL, so that with form-fitting loads no additional load-securing measures are required. At the events all over Germany, well-known personalities from professional circles acted as moderators for the three subject areas. Impressive films and facts underlined the moderated items. Not only with respect to the “35-second speed”, but also the securing of loads and accident prevention, visitors learned how they can make transport more efficient and safer in the future. In particular, the safe driving shots with an abrupt change of direction – where the vehicle is only kept on the road by supporting wheels – and the interior pictures with extreme cargo movements, fascinated the experts. Further cinematic impressions from the com- pany’s own test centre with its road simulator underlined the quality and safety of the vehicle. In addition to this comprehensive product information, the fastest Speed Curtain masters were also determined at these events. “The events and the competition were a great success. The response by the participating customers and drivers was very positive,” explains Gerd Rohrsen, Head of Corporate Communications at Schmitz Cargobull. “The fact that the semi-trailer can be opened and closed much faster had already been tested by us in advance. However, opening times of less than 10 seconds – the fastest time being 9.81 seconds – exceeded our expectations.” (sh) (tt) Further Information On the Vehicles “Opens and closes in less than 35 seconds,” that was the motto of the major product launch campaign for the new S.CS curtainsider semi-trailer with Speed Curtain at various product presentations at home and abroad.
