EXECUTIVE MESSAGE:
Dear Second Harvest Community,
What a year it has been! In July we completed improvements to our Watsonville facility
that will enable us to work more efficiently toward ending hunger and malnutrition in
Santa Cruz County.
Our community came together to make the new facility a reality.
Your generous support provided the means to modernize our facility to include highly
efficient food sorting and agency distribution areas, solar powered cooler and freezer
storage, pallet racks, loading docks, and much more. The cooler alone is allowing us to
accept an additional 40,000 pounds a week of farm-fresh produce.
With the increased dexterity the new warehouse affords us, we are better able to sort, store
and distribute the large volume of healthy food that flows through our warehouse. On any
given day, we have between 800,000 and 900,000 pounds in inventory that is distributed
through 200 local agencies and programs serving 55,000 Santa Cruz County residents
each month.
Proper nutrition in childhood is critical.
We are convinced that providing healthy food is key to addressing the current epidemic
of obesity and chronic diseases, which are particularly alarming when it comes to children.
Nutritious food—with a focus on fresh fruits and vegetables—will help them to be successful
in school and in life.

imagined. Our clients want to give back and take a proactive role in making their lives

education with committed volunteerism.

AGENCY PROFILES:
Santa Cruz Agape Manna :

Santa Cruz Revival Associate Pastor Karen Barton (pictured here) is a volunteer in Agape Manna’s many
ministries. Along with Pastor Ron Scadina, they serve Santa Cruz county residents in need, with emphasis
on serving the homeless. Santa Cruz Agape Manna is a Second Harvest member agency that distributes
food through weekly snack programs, a mobile food pantry, and collaborative meals with other local
service and faith organizations. They typically serve several hundred individuals each week.
Inner Light Pantry :
The food pantry at Soquel’s Inner Light Ministries provides fresh produce and bread to at least 160
families each week. Dave Francis directs a team of 10 or more volunteers who are both members
and non-members of the church.
“Our prosperity comes not from ourselves as individuals, but from our family and friends. Without our
community, we can’t function. We are thankful for everything the people in line have given to us, and
our service is here to pay them back.”
Circle Church Soup Kitchen :
The Circle Church Soup Kitchen serves free hot meals to 50-75 community members in need each
week. The Kitchen is completely staffed by volunteers, who prepare all their own meals. They strive to
create a warm and homey atmosphere with an emphasis on fresh, healthful foods. They also distribute
fresh produce and non-perishable items for clients to use later. “Over my time volunteering here, I have
seen lives transformed,” said Mary Mulford. “I have personally witnessed people and families who have
gone from desperation, addiction, homelessness, and personal trauma to become working members of
our community, some of whom now volunteer here at our kitchen.”
2011 Hunger Fighters of the Year :
Jolly Bilstad and Midge Morrison have cooked meals for
the homeless for over 20 years at the United Presbyterian
Church. “This is our justice,” says Jolly.
