Is this still the case? We are adjusting our corporate strategy to allow for changed market conditions. Above-average growth is now no longer the sole focus of our strategy. However, at Nordex, environmental protection is not confined to its products, but starts at the production phase. In Rostock, the Company is currently building one of the most modern and environmentally friendly facilities for the production of wind power turbines and rotor blades. These production technologies not only satisfy, but actually remain well short of, the stringent B-91_524_WPU_31_GB_RZ_02-09-10.indd 14 03.09.2010 11:47:15 Uhr 14 Engineering WIND FARM MANAGEMENT Getting a grip on the grid They are required to limit effective power, provide The question as to whether the CWE should be idle power or contribute to maintaining voltage: deployed in the planned wind farm is determined modern wind farms are power stations which together with the customer during the sales or must satisfy countless different requirements de- project phase. As the individual turbines in the wind farm are not able to meet these requirements on their own, an overarching solution, known as the wind farm master, is necessary. Nordex uses the Combined Wind Farm Management and Electrical System – or CWE for short – for this purpose. The CWE manages all the turbines in the wind farm in accordance with the grid codes, simultaneously providing an interface with the higher level control systems used by the grid operator and the customer. The system is located at the grid connection point at the wind farm and communicates cyclically with all wind power systems in the wind farm. For this purpose, the CWE is linked with instrument transformers at the grid connection point, which it uses to calculate various parameters such as voltage, electricity, frequency, effective power and idle power. The CWE then makes its “decisions” concerning the management of the individual wind power systems on the basis of the target levels which have been defined, the turbine status and the readings recorded at the grid connection point. B-91_524_WPU_31_GB_RZ_02-09-10.indd 15 03.09.2010 11:47:17 Uhr Engineering 15 The Nordex CWE is a sophisticated and thoroughly tested standard solution, able to accommodate most customer and grid operator requirements. In addition, changing requirements are reviewed on a continuous basis and incorporated in enhancements to the CWE, which then undergoes intensive testing at Nordex’s laboratory using a simulation system to ensure correct functioning and compliance with the redefined specifications. In this way, Nordex ensures that the wind farm will be operated to optimum effect later on and that the customer receives a fully functional product. Real conditions are simulated as accurately as possible in the software test laboratory. For this purpose, all signals and the physical response of the individual wind power systems and the wind farm are modelled in realtime simulations. The grid topology used in the laboratory matches the situation in the field. Only after all test scenarios have been completed successfully is the CWE installed and activated when the wind farm goes on line. Nordex has already installed CWE systems at over 110 wind farms – particularly in France, Portugal, the UK and Germany – with this figure rising. Giornata Mondiale del Vento “Giornata Mondiale del Vento”, presumably the world’s longest wind fair, took place in Rome from May 22 until June 20. It is targeted more at the general public rather than at trade visitors. There are still unjustified reservations about wind power in Italy in particular. “The aim was to make people aware that wind is an important and strong source of energy and to showcase the technology which is being used to harness it,” explains Franceso Paolo Liuzzi, managing director of Nordex Italy. Nordex showcased the drive train of a 2.5 MW turbine at the fair. B-91_524_WPU_31_GB_RZ_02-09-10.indd 28 03.09.2010 11:47:41 Uhr WE ARE REPRESENTED with offices and subsidiaries worldwide.
