AAL: European memberstates adressing the problem of the ageing society
The demographic development and the ageing of the European population will lead to a growing
number of older people living alone and in need of sometimes intensive care, to a decreasing and
ageing workforce in general and an increase of budgets for health care and social care. The number
of persons with physical and mental disabilities and especially chronic conditions will grow rapidly.
The problems of care and assistance to these persons are becoming more and more important both
from the social and economic point of view. They will bring dramatic challenges for healthcare and
care systems, state pension schemes and employers alike. All these trends and challenges are now
amplified by the effects of the economic and financial crisis, especially on the public budgets.
The challenges of demographic change cannot be approached with traditional policies and concepts.
Already around the year 2020 a first mayor impact of the demographic trend will be impost on
most societies in Europe. The needs for immediate actions are even bigger because many regions in
Europe, urban and rural as well, will feel that impact earlier and stronger. Especially with regard to
the decreasing workforce for care and cure, new technologies and new innovative systems solutions
are necessary, especially in the field of innovative ICT-enabled assisted living or „ambient assisted
living” (AAL) solutions. Europe has a high scientific, technological and industrial potential in these
technologies and systems. These aspects are discussed and presented at the AAL FORUM Vienna 09.
AAL: Die europäischen Mitgliedstaaten stellen sich dem Problem der
Überalterung
Die demographische Entwicklung und die Überalterung der europäischen Bevölkerung bringt
mit sich, dass immer mehr ältere Menschen allein leben werden obwohl sie – zum Teil – intensiv
pflegebedürftig sind. Dem gegenüber sinkt der Anteil der arbeitenden Bevölkerung im Allgemeinen,
während die Budgets für Gesundheit und das Sozialwesen ständig steigen. Ebenso nimmt die Zahl
der Menschen mit physischen und mentalen Behinderungen, besonders auch mit chronischen
Erkrankungen ständig zu. Das Themenfeld um Pflege und Hilfestellung für diese Menschen
wird sowohl vom sozialen als auch vom wirtschaftlichen Standpunkt aus immer wichtiger. Es
kommen dramatische Herausforderungen für das Gesundheits- und Sozialwesen, für das staatliche
Pensionswesen und für jeden einzelnen Bürger auf uns zu. Und die gegenwärtige Wirtschaftskrise
verschärft die Herausforderungen noch einmal, besonders auch für die Staatshaushalte.
Den Herausforderungen, die der demographische Wandel mit sich bringt, können wir nicht mit
traditionellen politischen Prozessen und Konzepten gegenübertreten. Schon 2020 wird der
demographische Wandel für die meisten europäischen Länder Realität sein. Ein sofortiges Handeln ist
besonders auch deshalb notwendig, weil schon jetzt viele Regionen Europas, und zwar urbane und
ländliche Gegenden, die Folgen des demographischen Wandels spüren. Insbesondere der Umstand,
dass das Pflegepersonal immer knapper wird, macht es notwendig, neue Technologien und innovative
Lösungen zu entwickeln – mit Schwerpunkt auf IKT-basierten Unterstützungssystemen, mit anderen
Worten AMBIENT ASSISTED LIVING (AAL) Lösungen. Wissenschaft, Technologie und Industrie stehen in
Europa auf sehr hohem Niveau, dementsprechend vielfältig sind auch die schon die existierenden AAL
Lösungen. Sie werden auf dem AAL FORUM Vienna 09 präsentiert.

The AAL FORUM 09 is the opportunity to share in the formation of a thrilling future and to discuss the
topics in various perspectives with all stakeholders of AAL. The AAL FORUM Vienna 2009 is the first of
a series of events of this type. Through three Tracks AAL Forum 09 will focus on the Joint Programme
itself and the rich variety of national and regional initiatives in the field, as well as the innovative and
socioeconomic aspects of AAL. The AAL FORUM’s workshops, exhibition, poster sessions and social
events will offer a broad variety of opportunities to get an overview, to exchange views and discuss
controversial perspectives and ideas.
The exhibition accompanying the AAL FORUM 09 provides institutions, companies and projects with
the opportunity to present their services and products in the field of active and independent ageing.
A hands-on area invites visitors to try out interactive games for the elderly. Ambient Assisted Living
means life in a supportive environment. The central theme of the exhibition is the technical design of
the home through ICT to promote independence of the older persons as well as communication with
the social environment.
Das AAL FORUM 09 bietet die Gelegenheit sich an der Entwicklung einer aufregende Zukunft zu
beteiligen und deren Themen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven mit allen Beteiligten der AAL
Bewegung zu diskutieren. Das AAL FORUM Vienna 2009 ist die erste große Veranstaltung zu diesem
Themenkreis. In ihren drei Vortragsgruppen wird das AAL FORUM 09 Schlaglichter auf das Joint
Programme selbst, sowie auf die große Vielfalt der nationalen und regionalen Initiativen auf diesem
Gebiet werfen. Daneben werden auch die innovativen und sozioökonomischen Aspekte von AAL
betrachtet. Die Workshops, die Ausstellung, die Postersessions und die Festveranstaltungen bieten
viele Gelegenheiten, sich einen Überblick über aktuelle Trends zu verschaffen, Ideen auszutauschen
und kontroverse Standpunkte und Ideen zu diskutieren.
Die begleitende Ausstellung des AAL FORUM 09 ermöglicht Organisationen, Firmen und Projekten
die Präsentation ihrer Service-Angebote und Produkte für ein aktives und unabhängiges Altern. Die
Besucher können die vorgestellten interaktiven Spiele selbst ausprobieren. Unter Ambient Assisted
Living versteht man das Leben in einer unterstützenden Umgebung. Daher ist das zentrale Thema
der Ausstellung technisches Design mit Hilfe der IKT für den Privathaushalt um ältere Menschen
unabhängiger zu machen und gleichzeitig ihre sozialen Kontakte zu erleichtern.

Door opener by ABOTIC
For many people the opening and closing of doors presents a considerable obstacle in daily life. The
self-learning door opener by ABOTIC is a fast and simple solution to this problem. The door opener
can be mounted on any door using a special gluing technique. As it is battery powered there is neither
building nor electronic work necessary. Moreover, this device can also be used in wet rooms and thus
it helps to guard the privacy of patients in public nursing homes.

Das Öffnen uns Schliessen von Türen stellt für viele Menschen ein beträchtliches Hindernis im Alltag
dar, das durch den selbstlernenden Türöffner von ABOTIC schnell und einfach beseitigt werden kann.
Der Türöffner kann sekundenschnell mittels spezieller Klebetechnik an jede Tür angebracht werden.
Da er mittels Akku betrieben wird, sind weder bauliche Veränderungen noch Elektroinstallationen
erforderlich. Zudem kann das Gerät auch in Nassräumen verwendet werden und somit in öffentlichen
Pflegeeinrichtungen die Intimsphäre von Patienten gewährleisten.

Alps Bio Cluster
ADEBAG is involved in a European project, the Alps Bio Cluster, in particular in setting up an
„Autonomy and health“ network. The purpose of this network is to improve innovation through
cooperation. Finding complementary partners for SMEs is a success key to have better access to the
market with a more integrated offer, especially in this new field where the network of diversified skills
(NICT, medical devices and services) and actors is an absolute necessity to tap federal resources of a
critical size.

ADEBAG beteiligt sich an einem europäischen Projekt, das darauf abzielt ein „Autonomie- und
Gesundheitsnetzwerk“ zu schaffen. Dieses Netzwerk soll durch Zusammenarbeit Innovationen
erleichtern. Der Schlüssel zum Erfolg ist dabei das Zusammenbringen von Klein- und Mittelbetrieben,
die einander ergänzen. Dadurch ihre abgerundete Produktpalette wird ihren Zugang zum Markt
verbessert, und das besonders auf einem Gebiet, in dem das Zusammenspiel von Fertigkeiten (NICT,
medizinische Geräte und Dienstleistungen) und Akteuren eine unbedingte Voraussetzung für das
Erlangen von staatlichen Ressourcen ist.

Innovative ICT Solutions for Older Persons – A New Understanding
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology will present its running national and international funded
AAL related projects with the focus on topics such as early detection of Alzheimer‘s disease, people
tracking for fall- and heart attack detection, prevention of mental fitness, reminding assistants,
detection of dangerous situations, Health- and Telemonitoring applications, behaviour pattern
recognition, new methods to involve customers, etc.
In addition young AIT-scientists from various disciplines will present their own research results at the
„Young researchers & PhD workshop” simultaneously to the forum.
Innovative IKT Lösung für Ältere Personen
Das AIT Austrian Institute of Technology präsentiert seine aktuellsten national und international
geförderten AAL-Projekte. Diese legen den Focus auf Themen wie Früherkennung von Alzheimer,
Personentracking zur Sturz- und Herzinfarktdetektion, Methoden zur Erhaltung der Geistigen
Fitness, Erinnerungsassistenten, Erkennung von Gefahrensituationen, Health- und Telemonitoring
Applikationen, Erkennung von Verhaltensmustern, sowie neue Methoden zur Einbeziehung von
Beteiligten und Angehörigen.
Zustätzlich werden junge AIT-WissenschaftlerInnen aus unterschiedlichen Forschungsgebieten ihre
eigenen Forschungsergebnisse im Rahmen des parallel stattfindendenen “Young researchers & PhD
workshop” präsentieren.

capacities of high level programming through Choregraphe software.

CURE Exhibition
The Austrian independent research organisation CURE presents findings and results from Ambient
Assisted Living projects. Particularly, the project HERMES is presented. HERMES pursues an integrated
approach to support the memory, offering both support in emergency situations as well as general
memory training. The system supports the episodic memory (conversations) by recording visual and
audio contents with regard to when, where, who, what and why something happened and additional
context information. The user can access the recorded conversation contents as support before, during
or after the conversations. Furthermore, the system makes it possible to plan future events of daily life
and to be reminded of them.
CURE Ausstellung
Das österreichisches unabhängige Forschungsinstitut CURE präsentiert Ergebnisse aus verschiedene
Ambient Assisted Living Projekte. Insbesondere wird das Projekt HERMES präsentiert. HERMES
verfolgt einen integrierten Ansatz der Gedächtnisunterstützung, indem sowohl Unterstützung
in „Notsituationen“ als auch generelles Gedächtnistraining geboten wird. Das HERMES System
unterstützt das episodische Gedächtnis (Unterhaltungen) durch das Festhalten von Bild- und
Toninhalten sowie zusätzliche kontextbezogene Informationen. Als Unterstützung vor, während
oder nach Gesprächen hat der Benutzer Zugriff auf aufgezeichnete Gesprächsinhalte. Weiters bietet
das System die Möglichkeit zukünftige Ereignisse und Termine zu speichern und bei Bedarf zu
wiederholen oder im Notfall zu erinnern.

Improvement of Drug- and Self measurement Compliance
A growing section of these elderly people is only semi-mobile and is suffering from Diabetes Type
2 and other potentiating risk factors like hypertension, low HDL cholesterol, high triglycerides and
obesity.
It is a big challenge to offer a continuous medical support service to these patients in order to avoid
severe follow-up complications and to improve their quality of life.
Therefore a so -called OtCM (Objective therapy Compliance) system has been developed. The
innovation is the ability to measure drug takings out of any commercially available blister which is
furnished with printed electric circuits and an RFID- NFC PCB.
Coincidently Outcomes data (e.g. blood glucose or blood pressure) will be also measured at the
patient’s home. The correlated Compliance and Outcomes data will then be transferred to the treating

physicians who are able to immediately react if something gets out of hand. Only the existing mobile
phone network is needed.
Verbesserung der Medikamenteneinnahme und Selbstmessung
Ein wachsender Anteil dieser älteren Menschen ist nur noch teilmobil und hat neben Diabetes Typ 2
oft weitere sich potenzierende Risikofaktoren wie Hypertonie, reduziertes HDL Cholesterin, erhöhte
Triglyceride und Übergewicht.
Eine große Herausforderung ist es daher, diesen Senioren eine kontinuierliche medizinische
Betreuung zu bieten, um die Lebensqualität zu verbessern, die dritte Lebensphase zu verlängern und
schwerwiegende Folgeerkrankungen zu vermeiden.
Eine wichtige Voraussetzung dafür ist die regelmäßige Einnahme der verschriebenen Medikamente.
Um diese zu unterstützen wurde ein innovatives, auf RFID - NFC Technologie basiertes so genanntes
OTCM System (Objective therapy Compliance) entwickelt. Die Innovation besteht darin, dass erstmals
Medikamenten Entnahmen aus jeder handelsüblichen Blisterpackung gemessen werden können.
Beim Patienten zu Hause werden parallel auch die Befunddaten der o.g. Risikofaktoren (z.B. Blutzucker,
Cholesterin etc.) bestimmt. Die korrelierten Einnahme- und Befunddaten werden dann in Echtzeit an
den behandelnden Arzt gesendet, der sofort reagieren kann, wenn sich die Werte verschlechtern.

Healthy Interoperability
Übertragungen von außerhalb medizinischer Einrichtungen ermittelten Sensor- und Gerätedaten
zu zentralen Informationssystemen und -speichern beruhen heute in der Regel auf Punkt
zu Punkt Verbindungen mit proprietären Protokollen. Im Rahmen des Aufbaus einheitlicher
Kommunikationsstrukturen sind Fragen der Interoperabilität, der automatisierten Einbindung von
Geräten in Kommunikationsnetze, des Datenschutzes und der Datensicherheit zu klären. Diese sind
Inhalt der Aufbauphase des Projektes. Die Ergebnisse sollen eine durchgängig auf internationalen
Standards basierende Datenübertragung vom Gerät bis zu Datenspeichern (z.B. ELGA oder
persönliches Gesundheitsarchiv) oder Informationssystemen (z.B. einer Versorgungseinrichtung)

Rehablititation Gaming System - Physiological Monitoring
& the Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI)
The Rehabilitation Gaming System is a Virtual Reality based training device that provides new
prospects for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from motor disabilities after strokes or brain
injuries. The Virtual Reality is a technology that allows a user to interact with the computerenvironment. This interaction may also happen via biosignals, like ECG, EEG, ECoG ... The focus of the
presentation is the combination of the Virtual Reality and physiological measures including the BCI.

Das Rehabilitation Gaming System ist ein Virtual Reality-gestütztes Trainingsgerät, das
Patienten/innen, die nach Schlaganfällen oder Hirnverletzungen mobilitätseingeschränkt sind,
neue Aussichten auf Rehabilitation bietet. Virtuelle Realität ist eine Technologie dem Nutzer / der
Nutzerin ermöglicht, mit der Computer-Umgebung zu interagieren. Diese Interaktion kann auch über

The iHomeLab is the Swiss think tank and research laboratory for intelligent living and building
automation. Energy efficiency, comfort and safety are the key aspects. Special attention is given to the
issue of AAL. Our core competencies are applications of automation networks that are user friendly,
appropriate for the masses and efficient in terms of cost-benefit ratio. The iHomeLab is a network
platform with national and international impact, where the latest results of our joint venture research

The project aim is to notice fall incidents and other emergency situations in the homes of elderly
people and, if necessary, to call help automatically via a telephone line. At the same time the user shall
get help through assistance in his/her daily life, e.g. the stove is checked when the apartment is left. In
the course of a field trial in the „Living Lab Schwechat” this application is tested in co-operation with
the local home for the elderly with regard to feasibility and suitability for daily use.

Ziel des Projekts ist es, Stürze und andere Notfälle in den Wohnungen älterer Menschen zu registrieren
und, falls notwendig, automatisch über die Telefonverbindung Hilfe zu verständigen. Gleichzeitig soll
der / die Nutzer/in auch im Alltag Unterstützung erhalten, z.B. wird überprüft, ob bei Verlassen der
Wohnung der Herd ausgeschaltet ist. In einer Feldstudie, dem „Living Lab Schwechat“, werden diese
Anwendungen in Kooperation mit einem lokalen Seniorenheim getestet und auf ihre Machbarkeit
und Nutzen für den Alltag überprüft.

designed to be very flexible and allows customization for any application where speech recognition is
needed. simon is in development for physically disabled people to give them the possibility to control
with their voice a multimedia center, to chat, to write e-mails, to surf the internet, to do internetbanking, to make phone calls, to control a calculator and much more – and this with only a few words
and independent of language problems.

AAL Projects
Telekom Austria is engaged in different AAL projects for the purpose of developing technical solutions
that support elderly people in being able to stay longer in their home environment. The AID project
aims to develop a communication terminal for elderly people using a touch screen interface to
facilitate access to communication services. The objective of the HERA project is to provide specialised
services for people suffering from mild Alzheimer or cardio logical diseases such as patient specific
home care and cognitive reinforcement services.
AAL Projekte
Die Telekom Austria ist an unterschiedlichen AAL Projekten beteiligt, die den Zweck verfolgen, älteren
Menschen ein längeres Leben in ihrer gewohnten Umgebung zu ermöglichen. Im AID Projekt wird ein
Kommunikations terminal für ältere Menschen entwickelt, das über einen Touchscreen den Zugang
zur Kommunikation erleichtern soll. Das HERA Projekt bietet Personen, die von Alzheimer oder
anderen Krankheiten betroffenen sind besondere Dienstleistungen, wie spezielle Heimpflege und
Gedächtnisstützen.

The Rehabilitation Gaming System is a virtual reality tool for the rehabilitation of motor deficits
after a brain lesion due to stroke, providing an individualized therapy for each patient. RGS
integrates advanced well tested innovative technologies (gesture tracking, virtual reality,...), custom

IS-ACTIVE project
The objective of IS-ACTIVE is to devise a person-centric healthcare solution for patients with chronic
conditions – especially elderly people – based on the recent advances in wireless inertial sensing
systems. The project emphasizes the role of the home as care environment, by providing real-time
support to patients in order to monitor, self-manage and improve their physical condition according
to their specific situation.
IS-ACTIVE aims at producing tangible results in the form of fully-functional prototypes with a relatively
short estimated time to market (1-2 years). The project addresses all the development phases of such a
prototype wireless sensing platform for patients with chronic conditions, from hardware platforms and
software packages to algorithms and user interfacing. IS-ACTIVE results are to be validated through
field trials in three different countries involving patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD).
IS-ACTIVE Projekt
Das Ziel von IS-ACTIVE ist es, individuelle Gesundheitsversorgung für chronisch Kranke – besonders
ältere Menschen – anzubieten – basierend auf neuesten Fortschritten für drahtlose Sensor Systeme.
Das Projekt setzt die häusliche Umgebung als Pflegeumfeld voraus, und unterstützt Patienten und
Patientinnen in Echtzeit bei der Überwachung, Selbstdosierung und Verbesserung ihrer Kondition,
abgestimmt auf ihre spezifische Situation.
IS-ACTIVE möchte greifbare Resultate mit voll funktionsfähigen Prototypen schon in relativ kurzer Zeit
greifbare Resultate auf dem Markt erzielen (1-2 Jahre). Das Projekt befasst sich mit der Entwicklung
eines Prototypen einer drahtlosen Sensorplattform für Patienten und Patientinnen mit chronischen
Krankheiten, angefangen bei der Hardware bis hin zu Softwarepakten, den Algorithmen und
Benutzerschnittstellen. Die Resultate von IS-ACTIVE werden in Feldversuchen mit Menschen, die an
chronisch obstruktiver Lungenkrankheit (COPD) leiden, in drei verschiedenen Ländern evaluiert

AALIANCE covering the whole AAL value chain. AALIANCE will define research and development
priorities, timeframes and action plans in the field of Ambient Assisted Living in order to ensure an
adequate focus of research funding for AAL, to foster effective public-private partnerships and to help
in further development of the European research policy for AAL.
