It’s all about the Value Beads
Note to Families..........................................................................................................3
At YMCA Day Camp, value beads play an important role as a sign of
character and personal achievement. As a form of recognition, beads
at camp promote positive behaviour, and are worn as a constant
reminder of what we value as a camp community. Throughout the
week, beads are awarded to campers for demonstrating the YMCA
core values of caring, honesty, inclusiveness, health, responsibility,
and respect.

Note to Families
Welcome to YMCA of Niagara Day Camp!
Our camp team is excited to offer a summer of fun, friendship and adventure in 2016!
We believe that camp is a great place for campers to learn new skills, make positive choices, make friends, become
leaders and create memories for a lifetime.
Our goal is create a new path for young people in Niagara. We are striving to move the dial and have children and
youth become healthier and happier than ever before. Together with our campers, families, volunteers, partners
and staff we want to make the summer of 2016 a monumental one.
“Overall, only 9% of 5-17 year olds get the 60 minutes of heart-pumping activity they need each day.” 1
In all of our camps, we have committed to providing opportunities that will allow campers to experience the daily
recommended amount (60 minutes) of moderate to vigorous physical activity. These are fun, non-elimination,
non-waiting activities throughout the day, allowing campers to keep moving and get their heart rate up.
When children are outside they move more, sit less and play longer — behaviours associated with
improved physical, mental, social and environmental health.1
All campers will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities as part of their day including cooperative
games, sports drills, scavenger hunts, fishing or creek discovery to name a few!
“Physical literacy is the cornerstone of both participation and excellence in physical activity and sport.
Individuals who are physically literate are more likely to be active for life.” 2
Children have the opportunity at camp to help gain the confidence necessary to develop fundamental movement
skills. Each week of the summer will be focused on a specific skill such as running, jumping, throwing, balance, etc.
Activities will build upon each other over the course of the week to allow campers to develop their skills.
We look forward to an action-packed summer full of physical activities and the beautiful outdoors. As we work
together to create a healthy future for children in Niagara we welcome you to contact us directly with your input
and feedback.
YMCA Staff Team
To ensure high quality leadership at YMCA Camps, all
staff and volunteers are carefully selected based on
their maturity, experiences and ability to role model
YMCA values. All YMCA staff hold current First Aid CPR-C
certification and staff and volunteers over 18 years old
hold a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector
Search. Our staff are trained in YMCA Healthy Child
Development frameworks and Asset Building approaches.
They also receive training in program planning and
behaviour management techniques.

Selecting the Right Camp
Before you register for YMCA Day Camps, make sure you are selecting the right camp
for your child. Here are some helpful hints to guide you to picking the right camps:
• Take the time to select camps with your child that match their interests and meet your needs.
• Our outdoor camps are the building blocks of our camp programming. We recommend
you also select a few weeks of sports, specialty or leadership camps to give your camper a
well rounded experience. At outdoor sites, activities will be offered rain or shine. Campers
should dress appropriately for the weather, and will have access to a pavilion or shelter.
• In order to ensure developmentally appropriate activities and programming, your
camper needs to be the correct age for the camps that you have selected prior to the
start date.
ST. CATHARINES
• Take note of the YMCA Aquatics Admission Criteria on page 18, to be sure that your child
can participate in all the water activities available at the camp they attend.
• Take note of where each camp you select is located, hours at that site, and the busing
option available from the Health, Fitness and Aquatics Centre. Information about busing
and fees is available on page 18.
• Will your child require Extended Care? For camp hours, extended care hours and fees,
see page 18.
• Will your child require a helping hand? For a full description on the Helping Hands
program please see page 15.
• Will you require financial assistance? Call your local YMCA branch for more information.

Sports Camps
At the YMCA we know that physical activity can contribute to children’s physical, emotional, and mental development. While participating in camp, all campers have the
opportunity to meet or exceed the daily recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity per day. Campers will gain confidence
in their ability to participate in a variety of recreational and sport activities through activities focused on developing their fundamental movement skills; and have the
opportunity to explore different traditional and non-traditional sports in a supportive and non-competitive environment.
Junior Sports (Ages 5-6)
Designed for the physically active camper, this camp is at an introductory level which
emphasizes fair play, team work and sportsmanship. A portion of every day is spent
learning the rules and basic skills in a variety of traditional and non-traditional sports.
Campers will develop fundamental movement skills, confidence and learn the importance
of staying active. If your camper is an athlete at heart then this is the camp for them.
Junior Soccer (Ages 5-6)
Campers are introduced to the fundamentals of soccer in a fun, non-competitive
environment. Various skills, drills and games will be scheduled into the week to teach
campers how to play the game. Campers will improve their skills like passing, shooting,
kicking, defending, and much more. If your child has a passion for soccer, then send them
to join the fun, get active, and kick it with us at Junior Soccer Camp.
In St. Catharines, our campers will also experience weekly workshops
facilitated by the expert coaches from Little Kickers Soccer Program.
Sports (Ages 7-10/12)
Campers will stay active while learning developmental skills in both traditional and nontraditional sporting activities. They will also try a variety of sports including baseball,
basketball, football, soccer and much more. A portion of the day will also include traditional
camp activities including swimming, special events and more. We focus on fair play,
teamwork, fitness and fundamental skills all while having fun in this camp.
Gymnastics (Junior 5-6/ School Age 7-13)
In partnership with Niagara Falls Lightning Gymnastics, campers are introduced
to the exciting world of gymnastics! Every morning, campers will head to the
Lightning Gymnastics club to receive instruction by certified coaches. Campers
will get to try the trampoline, balance beam, bars, vault and floor routines! The
remainder of the day will be spent participating in traditional camp activities.
Campers will develop flexibility, coordination and movement skills.
10 | YMCA of Niagara
Soccer (Ages 7-12)
Designed for campers with an interest in
soccer, this camp focuses on developing
basic skills needed for the game. There will
be daily instruction that focuses on kicking,
shooting, passing and trapping as well as
a variety of scrimmages, tournaments and
soccer games. This camp is designed to
enhance fundamental soccer skills and learn
the importance of team work in a fun, noncompetitive environment.
Aquatics (Ages 7-12*)
This camp is a splash! Designed to increase
skills and develop an appreciation for the water, campers will participate in two swimming
periods per day. One will focus on personalized instruction and goal setting while the other
is recreational in nature. The remainder of the day will be spent participating in traditional
camp activities such as crafts, gym and cooperative games. If your camper has a love of water
then this is the camp to dive in to!
*Campers must have successfully completed YMCA
Swimmer Level or equivalent to register for this camp.
Basketball (Ages 9-13)
This camp is for the youth who have an interest in
the sport and want to learn the basic skills of the
game. Campers will spend the morning introductory
basketball skills. Skill development includes shooting,
dribbling, passing and defense through games, drills
and scrimmages. During the afternoon campers will
participate in traditional camp activities.
Beach Volleyball (Ages 9-13)
Every morning, campers will head down to the Port
Dalhousie beach courts to learn the fundamentals
of the game. Skills include bumping, volleying and
serving while learning the rules, positions and roles
of each player in the game. The afternoons are spent
experiencing traditional camp activities. This camp
focuses on team work and gaining an appreciation
for this unique outdoor sport.
Trail Riding (Ages 9-14)
This camp is for the adventurous rider who is ready to
accelerate their riding skills to the next level. Campers
will participate in a daily 3 hour workshop led by our
professional instructors from Inception Cyclery. The
instructors will focus on basic bike handling skills, bike
maintenance and repairs, and teach campers how to safely navigate on different trails and terrains. Instructors
will guide campers on Thursday and Friday on an off-site trail ride in the morning. Campers will also participate
in traditional camp activities for the other parts of the camp day.
*Campers must bring their own mountain bike (with working brakes), cycling helmet and running shoes. It is also suggested
that campers wear athletic pants and sunglasses for safety. Campers’ bikes and helmets can be dropped off on Monday and
will be stored for the week at Burgoyne Woods. All equipment must be picked up on Friday on site.
Prior to camp starting, Campers’ mountain bikes can be brought to Inception Cyclery at
