to welcome you to The Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music. This is one of many great music festivals across this
province that brings people together in a celebration of art and community.

GUIDE TO THE 2016 MILL RACE FESTIVAL EVENTS
In addition to the concerts that are prominent throughout the
weekend of the festival, these other activities are also happening:
WORKSHOPS:
OPEN STAGE
Workshops in Ontario folk festivals are a
combination of education, performance
and entertainment. Various performers
from different backgrounds will be put
together on stage under a specific theme.
These may involve a number of fiddlers
from different groups, or a selection of
singers could be asked to share songs
about specific themes. These create an
experience of informal and spontaneous
music making by festival artists.
This will follow after the Children’s
performances on the Water Street South
Stage and is in the same venue. Singers
and musicians who would like to have
a chance to perform should speak with
the volunteers at that Stage and sign up.

SINGAROUNDS &
PUB SESSIONS:
Singarounds or Song Sessions, are informal gatherings where musicians/singers
gather in a circle, unplugged, sharing
songs together in an informal social setting. A pub session is similar, but mainly
instrumental music is played; jigs, hornpipes, etc. These are a mainstay at British
and Irish folk festivals.
Hosts are appointed to run these events,
but anyone who plays the appropriate
style of music can join in. The intent is to
provide a place for traditional folk song
and music enthusiasts who are not necessarily hired performers to participate in
making music at the festival.
These will be held in the Kiwi. The Mill
Race Folk Society hosts these events
regularly at various venues in Cambridge
throughout the year as well. Check our
website for details.

The Bilge Rats
The Bilge Rats are a
group of singers who
specialize in singing
shanties, the sailors’ a
capella work songs from
the great days of the tall
sailing ships. The Bilge
Rats’ repertoire also
includes songs from a
variety of other traditions, from doo-wop to
ballads, reflecting the
well established tradition
of sailors constantly picking up new ‘shore’ songs to delight and distract their shipmates in their leisure hours. There is a rumour that the Bilge Rats are an offshoot of
the Toronto Morris Men, who dance traditional English Morris dances in Toronto and
other parts near and far.

Bob MacLean is a

The Boxcar Boys
The Boxcar Boys weave
together a captivating bevy of
folk traditions, Dixieland jazz
and Klezmer performed with
a good ole time New Orleans
spirit. This Toronto based six

Cihat Ozturk
Born in Istanbul, Turkey,
Cihat Ozturk started his
musical career at a young age
performing in a host of school
choirs. Eventually his appreciation for traditional Turkish
folk songs soon directed him
to the long necked lute, the
Baglama. After graduating,
he began rigorous training to
enhance his vocal and instrumental style and execution.
Cihat won the Turkish Folk
Music competition for TRT
(Turkish Radio Television)
which gave him the opportunity to receive professional vocal training from the Conservatory of Music. He now
lives in Toronto.

Cupola/Ward comprises

harmony, incorporating

three highly talented
musicians and singers weave intricate harmonies and beautiful melodies. They have
two albums out as the trio and are involved in numerous other projects on the English
Folk Scene. Lucy Ward is a singer-songwriter from Derby, UK. She plays guitar, ukulele and concertina but considers her voice to be her first instrument.

Discovery
Jeff Gillett is an
experienced folk
guitarist and singer.
As well as performing
solo, he often works
as an accompanist for
nationally renowned
folk singer Ron
Taylor. Elaine has
been a enthusiast of
traditional folk song
for many years and
performs regularly in
local folk clubs. They are both from Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. Together their
voices combine to create beautiful harmonies and sensitive interpretations of
traditional and modern folk songs, enhanced by Jeff’s supremely tasteful, restrained
yet inventive accompaniments. Their repertoire includes traditional music, new interpretations of familiar songs and William Blake’s poems sung to Jeff’s original tunes.

Frog & Henry
Frog & Henry play
mostly early American
popular music: early
jazz, blues, rags, jug
band music, stringband; and some early
Calypso, Cuban, and
Mexican music .While
most active recently in
Canada as a two-man
one-man-band, Frog
& Henry was formed
in New Orleans as
an eight-piece street
performing band from
members of the Loose
Marbles, The Drunken
Catfish Ramblers, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Haret, and the Happy Pals.
Common iterations of the group now feature two members playing a foot-controlled
tuba, a pedal-operated upright bass, and a device for playing cornet and guitar
simultaneously behind vocals, clarinet, and trombone. The group can appear with as
few as two members and as many as eight or ten, depending on the availability and
location of its members and the requirements of the venue.

Born in Istanbul,
Turkey, Juneyt is a selftaught musician playing
flamenco guitar for 16
years, played alongside
well-known musicians
throughout his career.
He has performed on
many albums & festivals

Juneyt has been nominated for the Toronto
Independent Music Awards (2015), & four-time nominee for Waterloo Region Arts
Awards (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014). Composed music for two television documentaries,
won 4 Diamond Readers Choice Awards (2014-2015) He has had the honor to open
for world renowned musicians like Alex Cuba and John McDermott.

Lederman/Bell
Anne and Ian have
been playing great
Canadian music - old
and new, for longer
than they care to
admit. In the late
70s, along with Kate
Murphy, they formed
the group Muddy
York, in order to bring
the traditional songs
and dance music
of Canada to audiences that often didn’t even know that music existed. Anne is
also known especially for her work with Metis and Aboriginal fiddle traditions in
Manitoba. Ian sings and plays guitar, concertina, button accordion, 5-string banjo
and Scottish smallpipes. Anne and Ian have done thematic shows on several tried and
true Canadian experiences: The Great Lakes, The Underground Railroad, Come to
Canada (Songs of Immigration and Survival), Not a Mark in This World (Songs of
Social Comment), The Metis, and others.

Singer/dancer Tamar Ilana and Ventanas fuse passion and intimate dialogue,
embracing the varied instrumental and melodic traditions of North Africa, the Balkans,
Turkey and Spain to create fresh interpretations and original songs. Oud, baglama,
darbuka, and percussive flamenco footwork intertwine with surprising harmony, joy
and yearning. This unusual musical mix garnered the group two Canadian Folk Music
Award nominations in 2015 for their album Arrelumbre.

Green Barn Morris
This is a combined side, featuring members of both Cold
Barn Morris from Hamilton, Ontario, and Green Fiddle
Morris of Toronto to bring you dances traditional to
several different English villages. If you are interested
in learning, please feel free to contact us! We teach
beginners each fall. Musicians are also very welcome!

Forest City Morris
Forest City Morris & Sword from London Ontario
danced out for the first time in 1978, drawing inspiration
from the dances of the village of Kirtlington in Oxfordshire, U.K. Thirty-two years later, this women’s side of
Cotswold Morris dancers maintains the ancient tradition
while having fun! Over the years, the side has performed
at numerous festivals and dance events throughout
Canada, the U.S., and even Bermuda and England. The
Mill Race Festival is delighted to have Forest City Morris

Orange Peel Morris
Orange Peel Morris Dancers is the Border Morris dancing
troupe from the Orangeville area northwest of Toronto.
These dancers do Border Morris, an old English folk dance
performance style from the English/Welsh borders of
Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Shropshire.This group
also typifies the essence of Morris dancing: “A chance to
perform in the street, to show off, to be loud or silly or
raucous, to violate normal standards of behavior and not
only get away with it, but be applauded for it.”

The Toronto Morris Men
Morris dancing has been performed in England since
before the 1400’s, but the Toronto Morris Men (TfMM)
have only been performing their exuberant style of morris
dancing since 1985. The TfMM have danced throughout
Canada, the United States, and have performed in England
and Iceland. They are the only Canadian dance group to
ever perform in the Carnaval de Santiago de Cuba. This
year TfMM again returns to dance in welcoming streets of
Galt and, as their alter egos The Bilge Rats, will be quaffing
refreshments and astounding listeners with their collection
