News
New books in our library: Thanks go to H. Pölk, who donated the books: Aus dem Leben jüdischer Frauen, und
Mein Glaube - Mein Schicksal by Schalom Ben-Chorin.
As of October 1 we only have the bank account at the Kreissparkasse. Donations are very appreciated, as they
support us in our work to build and maintain Liberal Judaism in North Hessen.
Change of venue: The public educational religious service with Havdalah on Nove. 24. (16:00) on the occasion
of the Day of Religions will not be held as planned at the Ev. Forum, but rather at the
Katharina-von-Bora-Haus, Hupfeldstr. 21 Kassel Wehlheiden (approximately in der Stadtmitte).
We appreciate the donations from Christian Lehmann, Audrey and Dan Piccirillo, Christopher and Annette
Willing, Debbie Tal-Rüttger and Wolfgang and Barbara Bahr.
New Kiddush goblet: Our Kiddush goblet was only silver-plated and was looking very poorly
after all these years. Debbie has donated a beautiful, Israeli kiddush goblet to replace it.
Anyone who would also lie to buy one, can order it at www.doronia.de.
The High Holidays were held in Felsberg this year. Our leaders in prayer for years, Debbie and Annette, led us
through the Ne’ila prayer with soul and knowledge, both with texts and music. Annette’s Shofar tones reached
the gates of Heaven and carried our prayers to the Eternal One.
Hanukkah will be celebrated privately this year. We will celebrate the eighth day of Hanukkah in the
congregation, which is a special holiday in some congregations. More can be found in the column “Chagim Holidays”. Please bring your Hanukkiot with all the candles (it is the last day!). Please bring dairy foods and
fried foods fort he Hanukkah meal.

VIII. The following requirements for the religious life of the individual are imperative:
The Sabbath and holidays carry the important religious thoughts and remembrances. For that reason,
one should celebrate them through home celebrations and attending religious services. Any type of
work should be avoided. The celebratory customs: lighting of the candles, the blessing from the
parents, the blessing over wine and bread, the Seder and Hanukkah celebration should remain in our
houses with their old meaning and treated with a new consecration.
To promote the daily prayer in the home.
To give the most important moments of family life a religious meaning is a holy duty: circumcision, a
welcoming ceremony bringing children into the congregation after a period of study (today: Bar and
Bat Mitzvah), the religious marriage ceremony based on the principle of the equality of man and
woman, the accompaniment of the dying and the duties for the dead, as well as the care of the
grieving.

The eighth and last day of Hanukkah
The eighth day of Hanukkah is called SOT because one reads the section of Nessi’im to the end, with the
words from Numbers 7,84: Sot hanukkat hamisbeach (The is the sanctification of the altar.) For the mystics: In
Gimetria the letters SOT mean chet = 8; the eighth day of Hanukkah. This day is celebrated with unusual happiness
(especially within Sephardic communities). In some congregations there are female meals with many dairy
products to honor Jehudit, who gave Holoferness cheese to eat and then decapitated him. This custom is
followed also by some Chassidic groups (not female meals but dairy products) during the third meal on the
Sabbath (se’uda schlischit) – Hanukkah.
