Ergebnisse der Zeitschriften-Umfrage

Transcription

Die ersten Ergebnisse der Zeitschriftenumfrage unter den Mitarbeiter/innen der Eawag, Empa, WSL und
PSI liegen nun vor. Im Namen der Direktionen der vier Forschungsanstalten waren von September 2010
bis März 2011 die Mitarbeiter/innen in einer Online-Umfrage dazu aufgerufen, die fünf wichtigsten
Zeitschriften für ihre Arbeit zu nennen. In Kombination mit weiteren Kriterien (Nutzungsanalyse, Preis,
Bezug zu Forschungsfeldern, etc.) sollen die Ergebnisse der Umfrage zur Optimierung des
Zeitschriftenangebots dienen.
Es beteiligten sich 602 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der vier Forschungsanstalten an der Umfrage
(Tabelle 1).

Es wurden insgesamt 881 Zeitschriften als eine der fünf wichtigsten Zeitschriften angegeben. Dabei
wurden wenige Zeitschriften sehr häufig genannt, während mehr als die Hälfte aller genannten
Zeitschriften lediglich ein einziges Mal genannt wurden (Abbildung 1).

Eine Liste aller genannten Zeitschriften finden Sie im Anhang 1. Tabelle 2 zeigt eine Liste der zwanzig am
häufigsten genannten Zeitschriften. Die Rangfolgen der Zeitschriften an Eawag (Tabelle 3), Empa (Tabelle
4), WSL (Tabelle 5) und PSI (
Tabelle 6) sind – entsprechend der Unterschiede in der Forschungsausrichtung – verschieden.

Generell war die Überlappung der genannten Zeitschriftentitel zwischen den vier Forschungsanstalten
gering (Abbildung 2). Nur insgesamt acht Zeitschriften wurden an allen Forschungsanstalten als eine der
fünf wichtigsten Zeitschriften genannt (Tabelle 7). Die grössten Übereinstimmungen gab es dabei
einerseits zwischen Empa und PSI (68 Zeitschriften) und andererseits zwischen Eawag und WSL (33
Zeitschriften).

Ein lückenloses Monitoring für die Nutzung von Online-Ressourcen ist noch zu entwickeln. Daher kann
hier nur exemplarisch ein Vergleich mit der Nutzung der sehr häufig genutzten Zeitschriften des Verlags
Elsevier dargestellt werden. Generell existiert eine positive Korrelation zwischen der Anzahl der Zugriffe
auf elektronische Volltexte der Zeitschriften und der Anzahl der Nennungen in der Umfrage (Tabelle 8).
Allerdings sind unter den Top100 Zeitschriften (von insgesamt 2532 Zeitschriften des Elsevier-Verlags) 11
Zeitschriften ohne Nennung in der Umfrage und 10 Zeitschriften mit nur einer Nennung.

Trägt man die kumulierte Anzahl der genannten Zeitschriftentitel als Funktion der
Umfrageteilnehmer/innen auf, zeigt die resultierende Kurve keine Sättigung (Abbildung 3). Demnach
können die Angaben aus dieser Umfrage kein umfassendes Bild für den tatsächlichen Bedarf an
Zeitschriften aller Mitarbeiter/innen der Forschungsanstalten geben. Jeder weitere Befragte würde die
Liste aller genannten Zeitschriften um etwa eine Zeitschrift erweitern.
Im Vergleich der vier Forschungsanstalten zeigt sich, dass die Mitarbeiter/innen der Empa ein besonders
diverses Spektrum an Zeitschriften für ihre Arbeit benötigen (Abbildung 4).

Zwanzig Prozent der Befragten nutzten die Möglichkeit die Liste der Zeitschriften zu kommentieren (siehe
auch Anhang 2: Kommentare der Teilnehmer/innen). Mehr als die Hälfte dieser Kommentare bezogen
sich darauf, dass eine Auswahl von 5 Zeitschriften unzureichend ist und wesentlich mehr Zeitschriften
notwendig sind.
Eine Auswahl der Kommentare:
5 Zeitschriften sind viel zu wenig, um ein sinnvolles Arbeiten zu ermöglichen! Ich benötige ca. 30
Zeitschriften regelmässig, um auf dem neuesten Stand zu bleiben!
For my work I need access to a broad range of journals; hence, were I to have access to only 5
journals I would be severely hampered.
I cannot cover the spectrum of our research with only 5 journals.
In an environment where multidisciplinarity is required, a restriction to 5 journals only seems
too narrow minded. By taking part in large projects (especially EU) one has to shift the centre of
the investigation and so will it be with the indespensable journals.; It is a paradoxon to urge
people to go for new topics and to learn a life long and reorient themselves every now and then,
but on the other side restrict the information flow.; I am wondering which MANAGING brain
this originates from, for certain not from a scientist!!!; Instead of reducing the number of
Journals reduce the bureaucracy and those who just organise and reorganise and manage and
remanage.
There are many more important journals!!!
The number of five journals is not enough to cover all indispensable journals.
Of course, there are many more important journals than just 5 and its not easy to select the 5
most important ones. The importance of the journals is not constant and can change rather
quickly depending on the one hand on the journal itself which may change its focus and on the
other hand on the exact topic one is working on at the moment.;
In der Regel wird die Suche nach Forschungsergebnissen auf einem bestimmten Gebiet nicht
nach Journal, sondern nach Thematik durchgeführt. Wenigstens gilt das für mich persönlich.
Demzufolge ist es wichtig, dass einem auch eine grosse Anzahl an Journals zur Verfügung steht.
I think the relevant journals for me include more than just 5. This number is too small for
interdisciplinary research.

5 journals is not that many and I use many many more...
I am working in a interdisciplinary area, and often need publications also from other journals.
Both access to earlier publications and to the newest issues of the journals are necessary.

Zur Zeit prüfen wir für alle in der Umfrage genannten Zeitschriften, ob ein Zugriff auf die elektronischen
Volltexte an Eawag, Empa, PSI und WSL möglich ist. Da wir gleichzeitig auch den Nachweis der
Zeitschriften im NEBIS-Katalog und dem SFX-LinkResolver prüfen, ist dieser Prozess zeitintensiv und
noch nicht abgeschlossen. Bereits geprüft haben wir die Lizensierung der 100 am häufigsten genannten
Zeitschriften. Unter diesen 100 Zeitschriften haben wir 2 Zeitschriften identifiziert, für die zur Zeit kein
Abonnement besteht:

Applied Optics:
11 Nennungen (Empa: 4; PSI: 6; WSL: 1), Rang 44

Optics Letters:
7 Nennungen (Empa: 3; PSI: 4), Rang 95
Eine Lizensierung dieser beiden Zeitschriften werden wir mit hoher Priorität prüfen (voraussichtliche
Kosten: 6000-8000 US$/Jahr).
Für die übrigen Zeitschriften (mit weniger Nennungen) in der Umfrage erwarten wir ein höhere
Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass der Zugang aktuell nicht lizensiert ist. Für jede bisher nicht-lizensierte Zeitschrift
wird geprüft, ob eine Lizensierung für Lib4RI möglich ist. Allgemein werden die Ergebnisse der Umfrage
mit einer hohen Gewichtung in die Evaluation der Zeitschriften-Abonnemente einfliessen.

bottleneck in my work.


Verwendung von diversen wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften zur Bestimmung von
Krankheitserregern (Pilze, Bakterien) und deren Auswirkungen auf die Wirtspflanzen als
Grundlage. Neueste epidemologische Erkenntnisse zum Vorkommen der Erreger und
konkrete Probleme/Erfahrungen bei der Krankheitsbekämpfung entnehme ich vorwiegend
aus diversen Fachzeitschriften, welche den Bereich Krankheiten/ Holzwirtschaft/
Forstwirtschaft/Landwirtschaft abdecken.;


5 Zeitschriften sind viel zu wenig, um ein sinnvolles Arbeiten zu ermöglichen! Ich benötige ca.
30 Zeitschriften regelmässig, um auf dem neuesten Stand zu bleiben!

A limitation to 5 journals is very arbitrary. With the enforced policy in many institutes to
publish also in journals in different fields of science, the list of journals to be followed has
become longer and longer during the past years. However, access to the number of journals
has not been extended accordingly. Thus, many PhD students have a better access to
journals trough their university links than residing scientists have at their disposal. Therefore,
access should not be 'optimized' but extended!

Access to the most important journals in the field of Economic Geography does so far not
exist which makes my work sometimes quite bothersome. Direct access to the publications
of IWA, and especially Water SCi & TEchn would be appreciated very much, too.

Wichtig sind auch die lokalen Zeitschriften, welche in den grossen Literaturdatenbanken
nicht zu finden sind: ; Zeitschrift fuer das Schweizerische Forstwesen; Bündner Wald; Wald
und Holz; La Foret; etc.

Actually, list is to short as I use about 10 to 15 journals more ore less regularly for my own
publications, depending on the exact topic.

Actually, the most important articles from the most influent researchers in my field appear in
(at least) 10 different journals.

Actually, we need to have access to all AGU journals, all GSA journals, most Springer journals,
some Elsevier journals, it is a bit difficult to just ask for individual titles when I regularly read
the table of contents of about 20 journals.

At PSI, contrary to for example ETHZ, a number of relevant journals is missing. The possibility
to get many of these via NEBIS as photo copies is important for our work but not sufficient,
since the text can not be searched (!) and since colour graphs and images are of poor quality
or not readable at all which is especially a problem in my area of research: x-ray imaging
(without good reproduction of images kind of problematic ...). ; The poll of the "five most
relevant journals" points in the wrong direction: we need broader access to more journals
rather than being restricted to a few mainstream journals


Die zu nennende Anzahl von 5 ist absolut nicht zielführend. Ein kurzer Blick in mein eigenes
Forschungsgebiet zeigt, dass man meist aus mehreren Communities Artikel liest, bei mir zum
Beispiel Chemical Engineering, Energy Technology und Catalysis, die jeweils eigene Journals,
und zwar jeweils mehrere gute, haben. Ich komme daher schon auf 15 absolut
überlebensnotwendige Journals. Daraus fünf zu nennen, wäre schlicht sachfremd!; Daher
hier die weiteren: Journal of Catalysis, Journal of Power Sources, Int. J. Hydrogen En., AIChE J,
Biomass Bioenerg, Chem EngTechnol, Chem Eng Proc, Chem Eng J, Energ Fuel Fuel Process
Technol.; ;

For me it is important to have both high and low-ranking journals because much of the work
done in developing countries is not published in the top journals. Also some of the genuinely
interdisciplinary journals are not highly ranked. next year, IWA will release the Journal of
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development, and I am looking forward to that.

For my work I need access to a broad range of journals; hence, were I to have access to only
5 journals I would be severely hampered.


Hi. I find it absolutely impossible to name just 5 "most indispensable" journals.
Unfortunately, it never happens that one particular topic of interest is covered in just one
journal - you rather need to check several at once. However, I tried to outline the 5 topics
which are most indispensable for me. Above I listed one journal for each topic, however, the
selection above cannot be held for representative, as it is just one out of several for each
topic listed. Below I give a more detailed list of the best (in my view) journals that cover the 5

I am not sure if this type of question is really useful. I regularly consult papers in about 50
journals. But usually I am happy if I can organise a copy of a paper through the ETH library.
Shelf access at my institute is important for the literature appeared before about 1980 only.

I am working in a interdisciplinary area, and often need publications also from other journals.
Both access to earlier publications and to the newest issues of the journals are necessary.

I cannot cover the spectrum of our research with only 5 journals.

I counted the number of papers (that I have downloaded since I started my PhD at Empa).

I fear, 5 journals are not enough to name all important journals for my work... maybe 10
would be appropriate. But I tried to do a ranking :-)

I need a broad range of journals in my everyday work. I know that we pay a lot to have access
to all these journals (~1mio per year, is it right?) but I can't imagine to work without it.;
Maybe the future solution will be to have everything on a "Open access source"...;

I don't mention more general journals such as Physical Review Letter, Europhysics Letters,
Science, or Nature. Good access to these is indispensable.

I think that "most indispensable" is a logically wrong expression. Either something is
indispensable or not. It means that I can't do my work without the listed journals and I don't
think that there is a difference between I can't do it and I absolutely can't do it, in both cases
the work is not done...; ; Here some other journals which are indispensable. The list is by no
means complete.; Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research A; Japanese Journal
of Applied Physics; REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS; applied optics; applied physics
(letters); ...

I think the relevant journals for me include more than just 5. This number is too small for
interdisciplinary research.

I use very many more journals. I work in a very interdisciplinary field: decision analysis with a
focus on water supply and wastewater management issues. I thus need journals from the
field of sustainable water management (e.g., engineering journals from water supply,
wastewater management, and infrastructure management, and journals focusing e.g., on
micropollutants), from operations research, business, and economics (including e.g.,
Ecological Economics, which I did not include in the list above), from environmental
psychology and behavioral psychology (e.g., Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Judgment
and Decision Making), and from risk research (e.g., Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, Risk,
Decision, & Policy, Risk Analysis, ...)

I would need access to Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B, Journal of Vacuum
Science and Technology archives, Japanese Journal of Applied Physics and Magnetics, IEEE
Transactions. How come these journals are accessible for students from EPFL but not for
researchers from EMPA?!


Ich finde es eigentlich unmöglich, mich hier auf 5 Journals zu beschränken. Die massgeblichen
Journals für mich sind alle Journals der 3 ISI Subject Groups Geography, Planning and
Development, Environmental Studies, plus die Journals der Liste anerkannter Zeitschriften in
der deutschsprachigen Geographie. Je nach Projekt oder Forschungsthema rücken immer
wieder andere Zeitschriften aus diesen Listen in meinen Fokus.

It is hard to say "these are the 5 most important journals", I would add to the 5-journal list
that I gave you the following ones:; ; Physica B: Condensed Matter; Solid State

In an environment where multidisciplinarity is required, a restriction to 5 journals only seems
too narrow minded. By taking part in large projects (especially EU) one has to shift the centre
of the investigation and so will it be with the indespensable journals.; It is a paradoxon to
urge people to go for new topics and to learn a life long and reorient themselves every now
and then, but on the other side restrict the information flow.; I am wondering which
MANAGING brain this originates from, for certain not from a scientist!!!; Instead of reducing
the number of Journals reduce the bureaucracy and those who just organise and reorganise
and manage and remanage.

In der Regel wird die Suche nach Forschungsergebnissen auf einem bestimmten Gebiet nicht
nach Journal, sondern nach Thematik durchgeführt. Wenigstens gilt das für mich persönlich.
Demzufolge ist es wichtig, dass einem auch eine grosse Anzahl an Journals zur Verfügung
steht.

I find electronic subscriptions to ScienceDirect and SpringerLink very useful.

It is not easy to mention only 5 journals. I have at least 20 journals that I draw my

und Schweizer Fachzeitschriften.

It is really hard to choose five, rather 10 would be fine to me.

It was difficult to restrict myself to 5 journals, work of interest for me and which I regularly
access is spread over much more journals

Limiting the number of journal titles to 5 makes it rather difficult to choose. The choice given
here is not necessarily representative of actual online access needs, it also depends on
current project activities etc.

Listed are the most important journals in the field of plasma depositions. Other journals for
materials science are of high importance for my work, as well.

Journals with important articles in the field of urban water management

Much more than these 5 necessary!!!!

Multidisciplinary work (e.g. instrument development and then the application) needs more
than 5 journals!

None of these amounts to more than 10% of the journals which I use/used for my work.

Normally, over 20 journals were checked. Above journals are chosen for the relatively high
impact.

Of course I need more than these five Journals (Electrochimica Acta, Corrosion Engineering,
Science and Technology, Pressure Vessel and Piping, etc.)!

Of course this selection does not reflect all "most read journals" from myself and my
colleagues. Especially the toxicology related journals I need are not in this list as "Toxicol.
Sci.", "Toxicol. Lett.", "Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol." or such important journals like "Nature
Nanotechnology" or "Angew. Chem.". This should be added to your attention when making
decisions about the library

New Journal of Physics is an open-access journal.; Journals like Science and Nature are also of
high interest. Nature has released ~50 new Nature sub-journals. For example: Nature
Physics, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Materials,... some of them I find interesting.

Of course, there are many more important journals than just 5 and its not easy to select the 5
most important ones. The importance of the journals is not constant and can change rather
quickly depending on the one hand on the journal itself which may change its focus and on
the other hand on the exact topic one is working on at the moment.;


range of article

Since I am working not only in one specific fields or interdisciplinary, 5 journals are not
enough to cover my fields of interest...

Since my work is based on data search this is only a shortlist - our work depends on the
availability of all journals in which ecotoxicity data are published.

Some of the worldwide most important publications in the field of applied research on
internal combustion engines are not listed in SCI (e.g. MTZ/ATZ, SAE, IFAC, FISITA). SAE
papers are most important, Empa does not have online access (ETH Zürich does).

The field I am working on is diversified on several journals. The online access of Elsevier is in
particular very helpful. The online access to Taylor & Francis journals would help to get
better access to further important journals in the field of planning studies.

The named journals are the one I am reading the most often, however for my work I am
using at least 20 more different journals from different field. So naming only 5 journals is not
sufficient at all

Some basic journals in statistics and mathematics not mentioned (Biometrics, ...). Also not
mentioned are national journals (SZF, ...).

There are many journals, with low impact factor, that are fundamental to find details on
theoretical models and on relevant problems that are not "top level problems" but that allow
to understand "top level" problems. To cite some: Surface Science , Physical Review B (and
other journals in the same family), Journal of Computational Physics (and other journals in
the same family), Applied Physics Letters

Auch wichtig wäre ein zentraler Kostenträger, um OpenAccess Gebühren bei nicht
OpenAccess Journalen (z. B. International Journal of Environment and Pollution) zu bezahlen

I suggest reducing subscriptions for print versions and using the money to establish a fund to
cover page charges for open access journals or to buy out open access options in other
journals.

Two points:; ; One cannot obtain an unbiased to list of important journals with this kind of
questionnaire. In reality people do not remember where they obtain information which is
crucial to their research, so the list obtained with this method degenerates into a popularity
contest.; ; Instead of making decisions on which publishing company should be kept on the
swiss taxpayers payroll for their very marginal and questionable contributions to science, PSI
(and other institutes) should focus on making scientific information and results more widely
and easily available. Mandating an open access publishing policy for publicly funded research
(a la NIH) the best way to solve the problem this questionnaire is trying to address in the long
term, by making traditional publishing redundant. It would also add to the legitimacy of
science funding in the public eye.


I assume that Nature and Science are anyway considered.

I thought that we are now in a library cluster with ETHZ and the corresponding rights to use
the library service. I agree on focusing resources; my impression is that issues with publishing
houses should be handled at the topmost level (ETH board). Else the financial and political
impulse is just too faint. Publishers must survive, and we must have the best possible (not
maximum!) access to scientific sources.


general. cell for example does not make sense as print version at empa st. gallen.

Journal of the electrochemical society is quite crusial for the laboraty of electrochemistry, yet
it is not available over the PSI bibliothec.

The last one (Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics) is an Open Access Journal. Yet it is very
important (at no cost for the library).

Ich bin sehr erstaunt, dass diese Umfrage nur auf Englisch durchgeführt wird. Dies ist keine
Ladessprache! Dies lässt bei mir den Verdacht aufkommen, dass nicht englische Zeitschriften
in Zukunft vernachlässigt werden. Verheerend für unser Land!

Warum haben wir nicht den gleichen Zugang wie ETH und EPFL?

Moin. Ich wuerde es sehr begruessen, wenn sich da etwas aendern wird: Unser Team heisst
zwar "Schneephysik", wir haben aber fast keinen Zugriff auf Physik-Zeitungen.

One of these journals is not available through the current WSL subscriptions (Nature
Geoscience), and one of them is only partially available (Boundary Layer Meteorology). If a
library consolidation occurs, will that allow us to gain access to other institutions'
subscriptions to these journals?

Most articles of Journal of nuclear materials are blocked to be download on the internet.
Sometimes, it is very pity that I can not read many interesting articles..

all are society journals. we should support society journals, especially those that are not
bundled to big publishing houses.

"Water Science and Technology" is available at ETH, but not Eawag, which is kind of
annoying.

Except EDFAS, I don't read journals on a regular base (no time). More important are
conference proceedings, especially those of ISTFA, IPFA and ESREF.; Further literature is read
on specific demand depending from casewise internet research.


There are many other journals relevant for my research, impossible to add here. For example
journals of the Optical Society of America are also very relevant for my research and we have
no access to the pdf documents from PSI. We can request a copy to ETHZ, but this has usually
very poor quality. Especially for my field of research "X-ray imaging", access to relevant
journals with high quality (i.e. access to the pdf files) is very important.

The access to Nature from WSL is excellent. We desperately need the same for Science!;
Several of our colleagues are involved in the Editorial Board and/or are Editors of JVS, AVS
and CE. Unfortunately, all others have no online access!

There are way more than these 5 journals that are equally important to my work.


Unser Tätigkeitsgebiet ist sehr interdiszplinär, sodass es unmöglich ist DIE 5 wichtigsten
Journals zu identifizieren. Allein für die Toxikologie wären es über 5, dazu kämen noch
materialwissenschaftliche Journals und zu guter letzt medizinische fokusierte Zeitschriften.

