TCA PRESIDENT’S REPORT
This will be my last President’s Report as in accordance with the TCA Inc. Constitution I am not
eligible for re-appointment following my six years in the office.
It has been my honour and pleasure to have served as President for this period. As most of you are
aware, I have not owned or shown dogs for a number of years so hopefully I have been able to
concentrate on the broader issues of maintaining a viable and effective organisation so that all
members can enjoy their passion.
From an organisation which was leaking money and was within two years of bankruptcy when I
re-joined the Council some eight years ago, I am pleased that we are now in as good a financial
position as I can ever remember in my 30 years in Tasmania and we have sufficient resources to at
least investigate the viability of obtaining our own facilities.
I am not claiming credit for this alone as I have been supported by a strong team of Councillors
who accepted the realities of the situation some years ago and who have overseen some massive
cultural shifts to restore the fortunes of Dogs Tasmania. Members who have assisted the Association
in a volunteer capacity have also contributed to the turn around in our finances.
I would like to thank everyone for their support and I would especially like to thank all the
volunteers who dedicate countless hours to enable our sport/hobby to continue to flourish. In these
days where everyone is especially busy it is difficult to find assistance and I would encourage
anyone who is thinking about getting in and doing something to contact a Club Committee to see
how you can help. Your offer will be very promptly accepted I am sure.
I will not disappear completely as I still have a couple of years to serve as a Councillor and I can
assure whoever is elected President of my complete support.
As you are also aware, elections for Councillors took place in December, the results of which are
shown elsewhere in this Gazette and I would like to congratulate the successful candidates. I would
also like to thank Brian Enright, Sue Shrigley and Barb Duke who either did not stand for re-election
or were unsuccessful for all their efforts during their terms as Councillor. We hope we see you
returning to Council at some stage in the future.
Just a reminder that the AGM of members will be held in Hobart on the public holiday Monday in
March (11th).
I can also advise that at its January Meeting the Council decided to run a charity show for the
bushfire appeal on 20th April 2013. It will feature an all Tasmanian panel. It will be run on the same
basis as the Classics but if anyone wishes to make a donation towards the Show, please contact the
office.

FROM THE OFFICE
On behalf of Judy Debbie and myself I thank the members who sent cards and or gifts into the office
prior to Christmas; your generosity is greatly appreciated.
The results for the 2013 Election for TCA Inc Councillors are:
3 year terms - Mrs S Axton, Messrs M Evans, K Irwin, K Morgan and 1 year term D Brookes. All new
Councillors will take their seat at the Special Council Meeting 13 February 2013.
Any member wishing to enrol in the Association’s Conformation Judges Training Scheme for the first time
in 2013/2014 training year should register an expression of interest with this office prior to 28 February
2013. A training program will commence in March 2013 for all new trainee judges.
Any member wishing to make a donation towards the cost of the sashes for the TCA Inc Bushfire
Appeal Show should contact the office on 6272 9443.
CORRECTION
Regulation 42.1 (a) should read:
The committee will record the names and addresses of all witnesses and statements there from and
then send them to the TCA Inc for referral to the TCA Inc Discipline and Disputes Committee to hear
the case.
As from 01 January 2013 the Regulations published in the December 2012/January 2013 issue of the
Gazette over ride the July 2012 Regulations 40 – 44 inclusive.
A meeting for clarifications of the ANKC Rules of the conduct of Rally Obedience Trials will be held 16
February 2013 at the Kennel Area, Hobart Showground, Glenorchy, commencing after lunch at
approximately 1.00 PM. Please confirm your attendance with this office prior to 13 February 2013.
JUDGES AND STEWARDS
The new address for Mr K Irwin is 11 Mayne street, MAYDENA 7140.
Mr M Waddingham should be deleted from the Agility Judging Panel.
Mr D Brookes should be included on the Conformation Judging Panel for Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 at
Championship level, Groups 5, 6 and 7 at Open Show level and as a Ring Steward – ‘ph. 62555266.
Ms S Joseph has been upgraded to a Ring Steward.
Ms C Finlay should be included on the Herding Judging Panel as an Advanced Judge – ph. 62597154.
Ms J Ainscow should be included on the Conformation Judging Panel for Groups 4, 6 and 7 at
Championship level – ‘ph. 0419 035-706.

THE CANINE EXHIBITION
Just a couple of notes to finish up.
Our Raffle on the day had four prize winners and they were Gina Clark (Ware & Son Electric
Clippers), R. Weber (M. Booth’s Nutrimetics Gift Pack), J. Norman (Orig. Painting donated by artist
Margaret Brown) and Jan Hellessey (Nail Clippers donated by Shirley Munton). We raised an
amount of $256.35 for the Tasmanian Devil Appeal and the Dogs Tasmania Library will benefit from
a small show surplus. The show was never intended to be a fund raising event and the emphasis
was always on raising enough to pay for its presentation as a gift to exhibitors – to come out with
this small surplus is highly pleasing. It is conservatively estimated that, on top of monetary donations
and funds raised, donations in kind would have added nearly $8,000.

(page 61) please email a request to canine.exh@hotmail.com. Our facebook site will go into recess
approximately Easter time this year and thank you to Carol Eastley for coordinating this and to all
who contributed to its success.
Whilst we have celebrated the actual event of 150 years ago, the rest of this year will of course be
the 150th year of regulated Canine affairs in this country. Each State Association received one of
the souvenir medallions and one of each type was placed in the Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery. The final one to be presented will be to the Winner of the Australian Junior Handlers Final
to be held in Hobart later this year. (This coincides nicely with the end of the 150th year.)
The collective expertise of the small organising Committee was apparent not only in the presentation
of the show itself but in the way they were able to call on so many others for support along the way.
Jean MacDonald, Maureen Jones, Steve Eastley, David Sales and I have been involved in many
different aspects of Canine Affairs on State and Australian level. Council and/or Committee
executive roles, accredited Championship Judges, Ring Stewards, Show Organisation and Breed
education are but a few of the areas well covered by this Committee.
In the end, the success of the day was the response received from members of Dogs Tasmania and
supporters from interstate as they enjoyed their special day together. Thank you everyone and best
wishes for 2013.

RESEARCH GRANTS TO COMMENCE IN 2013
The Canine Research Foundation (CRF) is the research vehicle of ANKC Ltd. The CRF is an
independent Public Charitable Trust providing funds for research conducted at Australian
universities and directed at improvement of canine health. Funds are generated via the levy on
puppy registrations, fund raising functions, tax-deductible donations and bequests from the public.
The CRF was founded by the VCA in 1992 and over 90 research grants have been awarded to date.
A selection of abstracts of past projects is available on the ANKC Ltd website, which demonstrates
the quality of research being supported through CRF. You can be very proud of the contribution
being made to improvement of canine health in Australia and internationally.
In the assessment of new applications for awarding of research grants, the review process has three
stages: 1. A review panel of top scientists and veterinarians to assess scientific merit and relevance to
canine health.
2. A review by members of the ANKC Ltd Canine Health Committee for their input on relevance
and importance.
3. A review by CRF Trustees to;
(a) ensure projects fit within the Foundation’s Trust Deed
(b) award research grants to fit within available financial constraints and recommendations from
the above reviews.
In the latest round of applications for research commencing in 2013, 20 applications were received
and five were awarded grants. Brief details of the successful applications are below.
Research Grants Awarded for Research Commencing in 2013
1. Title: What is the genetic cause of haemangiosarcoma in dogs?
(Dr Caroline O’Leary, University of Queensland, $18,240 for 2013)
Haemangiosarcoma is a cancer that arises from abnormal cells that line the inside of blood vessels.
These tumours commonly occur in the spleen and heart. Clinical signs are usually not evident until
the advanced stages of disease by which time the prognosis is poor. Although dogs of any breed are
susceptible to haemangiosarcoma, this cancer occurs more commonly in certain breeds, suggesting
a genetic basis for its development.
This project aims to use 'gene chips' to analyse DNA from dogs with a low risk of developing
haemangiosarcoma and compare this against DNA from dogs in high risk breeds, with the disease.
This comparison of DNA from the two groups aims to find DNA markers that are associated with
increased or decreased risk of disease.
2. Title: Development of a novel approach to evaluate immune responses in dogs.
(Dr Caroline Mansfield, University of Melbourne, $9,570 for 2013)
Currently to study immunity in dogs, they must be either housed in research colonies, or
investigation is undertaken on naturally-incurring infection in client-owned dogs. Despite high
ethical standards within animal facilities and measures of environmental enrichment, this still
represents a significant impact on dogs. Prolonged time within research facilities can lead to
behavioural issues and the rehoming of these dogs beyond the research project is often not
possible. Disease investigations in client-owned dogs are not usually possible in early stages of
disease, or in conditions that may occur relatively infrequently.
The use of alternative species based models would not eliminate the use of animals, but it would
significantly reduce the logistical and ethical issues relating to the use of dogs. This project aims to
develop a new model to study the immune system of dogs, using immune cells from dogs that are
implanted into mice. Different types of donor tissue will be investigated to determine if this is
possible, and if so, which donor tissue results in the best immune system development in the
mouse. This model is then to be used to study the immune response to infection and vaccination
without the need to conduct experiments on dogs.

3. Title: The role of Kisspeptins in the management of ovulation in anoestrous bitches.
(Dr Christopher Scott, Charles Sturt University, $14,696 for 2013)
Kisspeptins are naturally occurring proteins found within the hypothalamus (part of the brain).
These have been shown to be pivotal to the brain control of reproduction in a range of species. In
these species, intravenous infusion of kisspeptins have been used to initiate and synchronise the
timing of the pre-ovulatory surge in luteinising hormone (LH) and hence ovulation.
This pilot study plans to investigate the potential of infusion with kisspeptin to stimulate ovulation
in bitches. If a luteinising hormone (LH) surge can be predicted at a reasonably fixed time following
kisspeptin administration, then this knowledge can be used in breeding management. Such
treatment would also remove the need for repeated hormonal assays and vaginal cytology to
determine optimal fertility, and thus, breeding times.
4. Title: Assessment of deposition patterns of 99m Technetium labeled-Fluticasone propionate
in the airways of healthy dogs using metered dose inhalers compared to nebulisation: a
randomized cross-over study.
(Dr Linda Abraham and Kathleen Chow, University of Melbourne, $13,157 for 2013)
Currently inhaled medications are in use for treatment of dogs with inflammatory airway diseases,
despite a lack of research validating their use. This study aims to assess two devices in their
effectiveness at delivering inhaled drugs into the airways and lungs of dogs. The devices are a
pressurised metered dose inhaler (a ‘puffer’), and a nebuliser. This will be achieved by labelling the
inhaled drug with a radioactive tag, and imaging the drug after it has been inhaled using advanced
imaging techniques to assess where inhaled substances are deposited in dogs (in the airways and
lungs, or the device, spacer, face mask, mouth or throat).
This work will compare the puffer and nebuliser for delivery of inhaled drugs in dogs, to assess how
effective each device is and whether one is better than the other, and determine if there is any
relationship between the way the animal breathes, the number of breaths, and the amount of
inhaled drug that is successfully delivered to the airways/lungs. The results will allow recommendations
to be developed for the use of the puffers and nebulisers in dogs.
5. Title: Naturally occurring bacteriocins; a novel therapy for the treatment of multi-drugresistant E.coli urinary tract infections in dogs.
(Dr Justine Gibson, University of Queensland, $14,775 for 2013)
Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in dogs, and E.coli is the organism mostly
frequently the cause. Many will be simple infections that are easily treated. Due to the rapid rise
and spread of the multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of E. coli, in both human and canine UTI,
alternatives to conventional antimicrobial therapies are urgently needed. Bacteriocins provide an
alternative solution. Bacteriocins are compounds produced by a variety of bacteria to inhibit the
growth of closely related bacterial strains; they have a narrow killing spectrum and can be selected
to target specific bacteria.
This is a project that was initially granted funds for 2012. Work has already identified bacteria that
inhibit the growth of multiple drug resistant bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. The current
research aims to characterise the proteins produced by these bacteria to progress the work towards
commercial application. It is hoped these bacterial products will be of use in place of antibiotics.
In addition, two projects from 2012 have continuing funding for 2013;
Characterisation of an antibody directed at Canine Telomerase Reverse Transcription.
(Dr Sam Long, University of Melbourne, $4,515 for both 2012 and 2013)
Structural and biochemical pathologies of canine epilepsy.
(Dr Marjorie Milne, University of Melbourne, $5,586 for both 2012 and 2013)

Tasmanian Animal Welfare Advisory Council
The EO advised the meeting that Mrs C Eastley had submitted a response from the Canine Health
Committee on the review of the Animal Welfare Act.

FINANCE:
A Profit and Loss Statement for the period ending 25 October 2012 indicating a Net Loss of $6063.89
compared to a Net Profit of $1315.14 for the same period in 2011 and Bank Register for the same period
with deposits totalling $36481.89 and withdrawals totalling $49590.15 were circulated to all Councillors.

legal advice be sought on what jurisdiction the TCA Inc had over members making comments about other
members, their dogs, judges etc on FaceBook and other social media sites.

Financial Reports for the period ending 25 November 2012 were circulated indicating a Net Loss of
$3316.27 compared to a Net Profit of $3975.90 for the corresponding period in 2011 and a YTD Profit

Mal & Joan Beech (Canada)
In 1978, Mal and Joan purchased their first show dog, an English Cocker bitch, who finished her
championship and immediately went to a pet home. As happens many times, they came to the
realisation that she was not without her major faults. They did go on to better breeding, finishing
many champions both in Canada and the US competing well at specialities.
In the early 80s they were involved with Lhasa Apsos for about five years, again finishing many
champions in Canada and the US. They had good friends who raised English Springers and
Pomeranians and it was there that they took on yet a third breed, Pomeranians, and after a few
co-owned Springers.
They also owned German Short-Haired Pointers here and there, mainly for exhibiting, as well as a
Pembroke Welsh Corgi, again American and Canadian champion and much-loved companion.
While they maintain a fondness for our other breeds, it is with the Pomeranians that they had their
greatest successes. Their home-bred dogs, owner-handled, have placed in the top ten dogs in
Canada. They still enjoy breeding and finishing their puppies, but no longer campaign dogs. They
are charter members of the South-western Ontario Sporting Dog Club, assisting with specialty
events each year, and have judged in Ireland, US, Venezuela and Australia and the Spring Fair dog
show in Australia 2005.

Judge's Resume
Glenda Goller (Qld)
My interest in show dogs began as a child with the exhibition of Miniature Poodles. Over the years
I held various positions in the Poodle Club of Qld and have been a Life Member for many years. I
subsequently owned/exhibited some of the first Afghans in Queensland.
I introduced the Chinese Crested to Queensland and am currently Patron of the Qld Club. Under
the NEONZ prefix I have bred/owned/exhibited Grand Champion BIS winning Pharaoh Hounds,
including the Breed record holder and Best Hound at Sydney Royal. My husband and I currently
exhibit a BIS Pharaoh Hound. I also exhibit English Toy Terriers, one of which is a Grand Ch All
Breeds BIS winner.
I have exhibited BIS winners in all these breeds including Whippets.
I am an accredited assessor for All Breeds examinations and have written exams at all levels for all
groups. Over the years I have been a trainer for a number of groups for aspiring judges and
co-organised the first Rare Breeds Seminar in the state.
My judging appointments have included India, Canada, Philippines, Thailand, New Zealand and
Brisbane Royal.

I purchased my first Irish Wolfhound in 1980 while living in Darwin. I travelled to Alice Springs for
a weekend of showing and my puppy won Puppy in Show both days and I have been incurably
addicted ever since. From that start I have bred and exhibited quite a few Champions and still can’t
imagine life without Irish Wolfhounds and Dog Shows.
I have also bred and exhibited Whippets and Skye Terriers and exhibited Afghans and currently
have two Cairn Terriers sharing my house with the Wolfhounds.
In 1993 I started Judge’s Training and after along and interesting journey became an All Breeds
Judge in 2009.
As of 1 March 2012 smoking within 20 metres of judging rings
and seating around them is prohibited.
This is a Department of Health & Human Services directive.
Puppy training conducted by the Welsh Corgi Club of Tasmania on Tuesday
evenings 6.30 - 7.30 pm at the Kennel Area, Hobart Showground, Glenorchy - cost
