Frank vs. God Brothers in Exile USA | 2014 | 90 minutes | mature language USA | 2014 | 78 minutes Q&A to follow screening This is the story of two Cuban brothers, Livan and Orlando Hernandez, who started their lives drenched in the baseball culture of Cuba. Orlando, a national hero, played for the Industriales of Havana. Livan, a hot prospect in Cuba, left first for America, where he signed with the Florida Marlins. He became one of the youngest World Series MVPs in history in 1997. In Cuba, Orlando, wanting nothing more than his family and to play baseball, was banned from baseball for life. In 1997, an increasingly frustrated Orlando left Cuba in a small boat. Less than a year later, “El Duque” was helping pitch the New York Yankees to a world championship, completing a most unlikely journey for a pair of brothers who rode their arms to freedom and triumph. After a series of misfortunes ending with his house being destroyed by a tornado which his insurance company deems an “act of God,” former hotshot lawyer David Frank is determined that someone must pay. Realizing there is no one person to blame, he seizes on his insurance company’s reason for denying his claim. He decides to serve God... with a lawsuit. Q&A to follow screening This is the authorized doc that chronicles the remarkable life of a rare phoenix, Joe Roth, who came to Cal in 1975 as a melanoma survivor and swiftly led the Golden Bears to a co-championship of the Pac-8. A Heisman Trophy favorite in 1976, Joe’s story took an unexpected turn when his cancer returned that season. Not only did he continue to play, but somehow kept his deteriorating condition private. His personal battle became the greatest secret in the history of college sports and the courage, dignity and grace with which he lived his life, became transcendent. Kalama, Ching, Mitchell, Patterson, Baxter, Trout, Boehne and Decoite have transformed the sport from a fledgling hobby to a worldwide phenomenon. Anna Beautiful Gaze Italy | 2013 | 16 minutes Director: Vito Palmieri Marco Pantani, the most flamboyant and popular cyclist of his era, won both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia—a titanic feat of physical and mental endurance that no rider has repeated since. The story of the greatest climber of his generation; man versus mountain, athlete versus the system, Marco Pantani versus himself. Schulman Auditorium Time: 11:00 am PRECEDED BY: The Middle Distance is the true story of Canadian world class runner Charles Philibert-Thiboutot. After the death of his best friend, Charles must choose between running in the Olympic trials in Calgary or attending his friend’s funeral. The Middle Distance Director : David Findlay Canada | 2014 | 18 minutes What happens when you combine Goodfellas with college basketball? You get Playing for the Mob, the story of how mobster Henry Hill—played by Ray Liotta in the 1990 Martin Scorsese classic—orchestrated the fixing of Boston College basketball games in 1978 and 1979. The details of that point-shaving scandal are revealed for the first time on film through the testimony of the players, the federal investigators and the actual fixers, including Hill, who died shortly after he was interviewed. Playing for the Mob may be set in the seemingly golden world of college basketball… but like Goodfellas, this is a tale of greed, betrayal and reckoning. Ultimately, both films share the same message: With that much money at stake, you can’t trust anybody. In one of the most infamous moments in National Hockey League history, on December 1, 1977, John Wensink, after just fighting Alex Pirus of the Minnesota North Stars, skated over to the Minnesota bench and motioned with his hands, challenging the entire team. This short film captures the infamous moment and career of John Wensink, giving us a glimpse of the real man behind the title of “enforcer.” Director: Molly Schiot It was 1975 and skateboarding was hugely popular when Jim O’Mahoney, head of the U.S. Skateboard Assn., got a call from the producer of ABC’s television show, The Guinness Book of World Records. The producer wanted to shoot a skateboarding event for the show. As a child, O’Mahoney begged his parents to drive fast over the steepest section of Hill Street, an almost 30-degree incline in Signal Hill. O’Mahoney told the TV producer he could create a downhill skateboarding race on the steep Signal Hill incline bordered by oil fields. For the next four years, Signal Hill was the site of some of skateboarding’s hairiest races and most vicious wipeouts. The Signal Hill Speed Run, the world’s first downhill skateboard race, also prompted several developments in the sport, including street luge racing, fully enclosed skate-cars and the introduction of women to the sport. The contestants in Signal Hill’s downhill races remember them as wild, death-defying parties on wheels.
