The English modern rock band's third album "Humbug" (Domino) outsold the rest of the top five combined to debut at the top. Its predecessors, "Favorite Worst Nightmare" in 2007 and "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" in 2006, also debuted at the summit. French DJ-artist David Guetta followed last week's No. 1 on the singles chart, "Sexy Chick" featuring Akon, with a No. 2 debut for the album "One Love" (Positiva/Virgin/EMI). Last week's album bestseller, Calvin Harris' "Ready For The Weekend" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment), dropped to No. 3 as its title track single held at No. 4. The new album chart also showed renewed sales for James Morrison's "Songs For You, Truths For Me" (Polydor/Universal, up 14-9 for its first top ten appearance since April) and Lily Allen's "It's Not Me, It's You" (Regal/Parlophone/EMI), up 16-11, its highest ranking since June. Neil Diamond had a new entry at No. 14 with the new live set "Hot August Night/NYC" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment), while British modern rock band Athlete's fourth album "Black Swan," their first since moving from Parlophone/EMI to Fiction/Universal in the U.K., entered at No. 18. Wartime entertainer Dame Vera Lynn, now 92, saw Decca/Universal's new compilation "We'll Meet Again - The Very Best of Vera Lynn," chart at No. 20, her highest-ever standing in the British album chart. Dizzee Rascal's "Holiday" (Dirtee Stank) became his third U.K. No. 1 single in little more than a year and second in three months. "Dance Wiv Me," the rapper's collaboration with Harris, hit the top in July 2008 and "Bonkers," with Armand Van Helden, led the field at the end of May. The only other top ten newcomer was "The Golden Rule" (14th Floor/Warner Music) by Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro. There were top 20 climbs for Sean Kingston's "Fire Burning" (Beluga Heights/Epic/Sony Music Entertainment), 13-12, and Lily Allen's "22," up 2314. For the first time since his death, Michael Jackson surrendered the top spot on European Top 100 Albums, replaced by Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies)" (Interscope/Universal). Pitbull's "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" (Ultra/B1) is in a sixth week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles. —Paul Sexton, London A BENEFIT FOR THE NEW YORK POLICE & FIRE WIDOWS’ & CHILDREN’S BENEFIT FUND BILLBOARD.BIZ BULLETIN BUSINESS MATTERS A daily column of opinion, news and analysis by senior business analyst Glenn Peoples COPYRIGHT DEBATE, NIELSEN, WMG, THE PIRATE BAY AND MORE • News of it has gone almost unnoticed in the U.S., so you may not know the Canadian government is consulting on copyright in advance of new copyright legislation . Discussion has been robust, thoughtful (usually) and quite interesting to watch from south of the border. Now, I n d u s t r y M i n i s t e r T o n y Clement has hinted a new copyright bill could come in Spring 2010 rather than before the end of 2009. (Michael Geist) • Nielsen describes America's generation gap and explained some differences that marketers should note. Example: Younger persons spend somewhat lower amounts of time online from home in an average day, but are the strongest adopters of other forms of technology-such as the mobile telephone. In 2008, the average teenager sent or received over 35,000 text messages a year-about one message every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That's 163 times more than the average person aged 65+." (Nielsen) • CD pirates have been taking it on the chin due to harsher anti-piracy laws in Australia. One music and movie store owners was sentenced to jail for 15 months for selling pirated CDs. A supplier of pirated CDs plead guilty to 32 counts last week and faces sentencing on September 7. (Daily Telegraph) • Warner Music Ireland's 2008 profits grew 70% to 713,615 euros on revenue of 10.26 euros million, according to accounts filed with the government. (Irish Times) • A common strategy in online marketing •••• PAGE 2 OF 6 Twitter, Face is to direct all impressions (T book, MySpace , etc.) to the artist's .com. It's key to capturing direct-to-consumer sales and is the best route to cultivating a deep relationship with fans. One problem is that musicians spend a great deal of time managing content - uploading MP3s and pictures, entering tour dates, updating news and bio information. Derek Sivers , founder of CD Baby, outlines a type of service an ISP could offer musicians: The artist's .com is the one and only place information is entered. The ISP then disseminates that information throughout the Internet. "That way, any new music websites could launch with instant access to thousands of musicians, with the most up-to-date info, and not need to host any of the audio, images, or text on their site. Everything be pulled real-time from your site using the API." (Music Think Tank) • The latest news on the Pirate Bay is only tangentially related to its possible acquisition by Global Gaming Factory. The Swedish government has confiscated some assets of GGF's CEO to help satisfy a claim for back taxes owed. This development may not have any impact on GGF's quest to acquire the Pirate Bay - investors already have plenty of reasons for cold feet - but the timing couldn't be better for skeptics of GGF and its planned business model. The guard, Michael Kennedy, was trying to move an unruly fan from near the stage. 1995 - Jazz trumpeter and vocalist Louis Armstrong is honored on a U.S. postage stamp. The sale is kicked off with a jazz festival in New Orleans featuring Wynton Marsalis, Al Hirt, Doc Cheatham and other jazz stars. 1985 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: “St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion),” John Parr. The week this song from the film “St. Elmo's Fire'' hits No. 1 marks the first time that songs from motion pictures hold the top three positions on the Billboard Hot 100. Huey Lewis' “The Power of Love'' from the film “Back to the Future” is No. 2 and Tina Turner's “We Don't Need Another Hero'' from “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” is in the third slot. BILLBOARD.BIZ BULLETIN PAGE 3 OF 6 [IN BRIEF] 7-ELEVEN, WHOLE FOODS COME TOGETHER FOR FAB 4 The Beatles will get a little help from new corporate friends on Sept. 9 when EMI Music embarks on the global launch of its digitally remastered Beatles catalog on CD to coincide with the release of videogame The Beatles: Rock Band. It will be hard to miss the push this fall as Restoration Hardware, Starbucks, Whole Foods, Ralph's, Pathmark, 7-Eleven and Blockbuster all promote the CD collection. The label sees the move as a chance to use an artist with major muscle to open up new channels for the sales of CDs since record stores are becoming about as extinct as the 8-track tape. The Beatles-a notable holdout on iTunes-have the broad appeal that opens retail doors. "It will allow us to reach the everyday places people shop," said Bill Gagnon, svp, catalogue marketing for EMI Music North America. "We're bringing the music to where they are." With one Beatle boot in the retail door, EMI sees a possible inroads for a roster that includes Coldplay, the Beastie Boys and the White Stripes along with classic artists such as Dean Martin and Nat King Cole. Gagnon is currently approaching food, drug, mass and other alt-retailers with the Now That's What I Call Music! brand. "But it still needs to be a pretty significant project to get these outlets' attention," he explained. Terry Dry, president of Los Angeles-based new media marketing agency Fanscape, said such retail outlets are a great channel for the label. "The Internet's the ultimate distribution mechanism, but [labels] haven't quite figured out how to monetize that well or how to still sell their shiny plas- tic discs. When you look at a place like a 7-Eleven or a supermarket where you can get that impulse buyer who's spending $100 on groceries, they might buy the Beatles remastered instead of US Weekly. EMI also has the Beach Boys and Sinatra and some pretty cool catalog stuff that makes sense to that shopper. My mother hasn't totally figured out her iPod yet." Anticipated as one of the largest music marketing and merchandising events ever, 9/9/09 will unleash an Apple Corps avalanche: the 14 remastered Beatles CDs (both stereo and mono versions), the Rock Band game and gear, and a slew of fan fare brokered by licensing agency Live Nation Merchandise, ranging from Beatles guitar straps (Planet Waves) to vintage-style tees. Apple Corps oversees the Beatles' business assets. On the retail side, the promotional plans include: • Restoration Hardware will showcase the full range of remastered discs along with the limited edition $89.99 Box of Vision tabletop CD display unit and book, The Beatles: Rock Band, USAopoly's Beatles-themed Trivial Pursuit game, and other Beatles booty in a Fab Four-furnished living room. The Beatles will meet the cover of Restoration Hardware's holiday catalog, too, said Steve Glasenk, vp-licensing, Live Nation Merchandise. • Starbucks will offer four of the remastered EMI Beatles titles throughout September-Abbey Road, Help, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Rubber Soul-which will be the sole music offerings at the coffee chain during the month. • Target and Best Buy will build Beatles boutiques within stores to showcase the music, the licensed lifestyle product and the MTV Games- produced/Electronic Arts-distributed game. Retail exclusives abound: Bloomingdale's will sell a high-end edition of Rock Band featuring replicas of John's and George's guitars and Paul's bass in their very own travel cases. Best Buy will run a midnight sales promotion and sell a crate that contains a T-shirt and a CD. Retail strategies aside, Paul et al. might wanna set their bets on The Beatles: Rock Band driving multigenerational music sales. "It's going to do really well through the holidays," Dry predicted of the Harmonix Music Systems-designed game. He adds, "Little kids will wanna hear Beatles music in their cars. I think it's going to surprise people how big it is. They already think it's going to be big, and it's going to be even bigger." —Becky Ebenkamp, Brandweek BRIAN JONES' DEATH TO BE REEXAMINED BY BRITISH POLICE British police say they will review the 1969 death of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones. Sussex police said Monday in a statement that they have received documents from an investigative journalist that relate to Jones' death. They say the papers "will be examined by the force, but it's too early to comment at this time as to what the outcome might be." Jones died in July 1969 at age 27. His body was found in the pool at his 11-acre (4.5-hectare) Sussex estate. A coroner said Jones drowned while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. But there has long been speculation about the death. The Mail on Sunday said Scott Jones - who is not related to the musician - handed over 600 documents to Sussex police. —Associated Press Get your message front and center with the Billboard Country Update* The Country Music Industry’s Must-Have Source for Weekly News and Chart Info! Slipknot, Deftones, Cypress Hill, Geto Boys, Goodie Mob, Pennywise, Redman & Method Man, Kottonmouth Kings and Bad Brains, among others, will perform across three stages at Cypress Hill's revamped event meant to raise awareness about the cannabis counter-culture. Sublime's original lead singer, Bradley Nowell, died of a drug overdose in 1996 just as the band was achieving its biggest mainstream success. Surviving members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson went on to form the Long Beach Dub All Stars, but earlier this year played a gig with Northern California-based singer Rome that Gaugh later called a Sublime reunion. Hosted by comedic duo Cheech and Chong, the Guerilla Union-produced event will also feature appearances by Immortal Technique, Hieroglyphics, K'Naan, Living Legends, B Real, Mix Master Mike, Devin the Dude, DJ Muggs, Dirty Heads, Swollen Members, Big B, Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Reza, Lenny V, Barry Weaver and ShortDawg Tha Native, with more to be announced. The ticket pre-sale for Smokeout begins Sept. 4, and the general public on sale starts Sept. 12. Further information will be available at guerillaunion.com/smokeout. The Smokeout festival was launched by Cy- press Hill in 1998. In addition to music, this year's event will feature cannabis-themed events, including a 420 movie night, a "munchie garden," workshops, guest speakers and the Smokeout Cannabis Cup and Medical Marijuana Expo. —Mitchell Peters, L.A. JAY-Z CHARITY CONCERT PLANNED FOR SEPT. 11 Rapper Jay-Z has formally unveiled plans for a charity concert called "Answer The Call" to take place at Madison Square Garden (MSG) on Sept. 11. All tickets will be priced at $50, with 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales and concert merchandise going to New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund. "This all came about September 10, 2001. I was in Los Angeles shooting a video. The album was to come out the next day. On that day, I got a phone call and a friend of mine said, 'turn the TV on.' I turned the TV on and I saw the World Trade Center on fire," Jay-Z said yesterday before a room full of media at MSG. "I turned the TV on September 12 and I saw footage of these heroic actions, people running to buildings and saving each other and I saw the strength of New York," Jay-Z continued. "It made me proud. So, as I was embarking on putting out 'Blueprint 3,' it was only right that we revisit that day. This is my chance to do something to help out." Jay-Z's eleventh studio album, "Blueprint 3," will be released the same day as the concert. The show will be televised live on Fuse TV, one of the sponsors of the event. In attendance at the formal announcement was Governor David Patterson, Manhattan Bor- ough president Scott Stringer; Stephen Dannhauser, president and CEO of the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund; NYC Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta; MSG Entertainment president Jay Marciano; Mike Bair, president of MSG Media; Jay-Z's wife, singer Beyonce; and Warner Music Group's executive VP Kevin Liles. —Mariel Concepcion, N.Y. COLUMBIA TO RELEASE 'GLEE' SOUNDTRACKS Twentieth TV is teaming with Columbia Records to release a series of soundtracks from Fox's upcoming musical drama "Glee." The partners will release "Glee: The Music, Volume 1" on Nov. 3. It contains 17 tracks performed during the show's first season. The move follows the success of the cast's cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," which hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart following its use in the show's pilot, which was previewed last season after "American Idol." Selections on the first soundtrack include renditions of Queen's "Somebody to Love," Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and Kanye West's "Gold Digger." "Glee" premieres Sept. 9 and has enjoyed some of the strongest critical buzz among the new fall shows. It also had a screening in July at ComicCon in San Diego. Fox has struggled to launch dramas in the fall, however, and the musical-drama format is a seldom-tested format. But initiatives that further spread the show's soundtrack can only help generate more fans. —James Hibberd, The Hollywood Reporter BILLBOARD.BIZ BULLETIN PAGE 5 OF 6 [IN BRIEF] ADAM LAMBERT, ALLISON IRAHETA CLOSE TO FINISHING DEBUT ALBUMS There's no rest for the signed on the American Idols Live! tour -- just ask runner-up Adam Lambert and fourth-place finisher Allison Iraheta, who are using any down time on the road to continue working on their debut albums, which are both due in November. Lambert tells Billboard.com that his set is "about midway" to being finished. "We recorded a bunch of stuff before the tour started, and I wrote a handful of stuff," he reports. "We have three or four weeks after the tour ends that I have to record like crazy, but we have a lot of material to do that with." Lambert says the album "has elements of rock, of course, but it has a lot of pop sensibilities to it. It's really current, really fresh and yet still melodically and vocally it's nodding to the '70s and '80s classics. I know I got most of my credibility on 'Idol' doing those songs from those eras, and it wouldn't make sense for me to do an album that runs away from it." Among Lambert's collaborators so far have been RedOne, Linda Perry, Max Martin and Greg Wells. The album is so far unnamed -- "I want to see what ends up on the album before I come up with a title," he says -- and will likely be comprised of all-original songs, though he says that "there might be a cover on there. It's a maybe." Similarly, he has not yet recorded any duets but says "the jury's still out. It really could happen." Iraheta, meanwhile, has been writing songs with Kevin Rudolf and David Hodges for her album, which she says will "definitely have that rock sound to it. It'll be fun, and there's gonna be some deep stuff, too -- like, lyrics about what can possibly be happening to other people in the world right now that I've gone through myself, but also melodically, just some good, slow rock ballads." Iraheta says she's feeling "less pressure" than either Lambert or Season 8 "Idol" champion Kris Allen. "They're not in my face as much as they are in theirs," she notes. Lambert, meanwhile, acknowledges the weight of expectations. "I do feel a little bit of pressure," he says. "There's a lot of hype. I've been fortunate enough to have a lot of attention, which is a great thing for somebody in my position, with an album coming out. I think people are going to like what they hear. I hope they do, at least." —Gary Graff CRANBERRIES BOOK FIRST TOUR IN SEVEN YEARS Irish rock band The Cranberries will reunite after a near seven-year break for a tour in North America and Europe with some new songs and old hits like "Zombie" and "Linger." In January singer Dolores O'Riordan performed together with some former band members in Dublin for the first time since the band from the western city of Limerick broke up in 2003. They met again at O'Riordan's new home in Canada at the christening of her son Taylor. "Never officially broken up, the band instead has been on hiatus, and being in the same room and playing music together for the first time made them realize how much they had missed each other," said the band's web site. The Cranberries, one of the most successful Irish bands of recent times, was formed in the early 1990s. It will begin its tour in North America toward the end of the year and continue in Europe in early 2010, the web site said. The Irish Times newspaper said the tour would start in Toronto in mid-November. "We lost contact with each other," O'Riordan told the paper, adding that she was "tickled silly" by the thought of recording a new album again with the band. "We were always friends, but I wouldn't be hanging around with them offstage. They're real lad's lads. What was I going to talk to them about? Breastfeeding?" —Andras Gergely, Reuters GROSS, CAVELL MOVE TO SONY CLASSICAL Sony Classical named Valérie Gross and Mark Cavell to new positions within the international department and relocated their international repertoire center to Berlin. Gross was named VP of A&R and previously held the same position at Decca Music Group in London. Cavell is now VP of finance for Sony Classical International. He most recently was VP of finance and business affairs at Decca in London. Both will work in the new Berlin office and report to Bogdan Roscic, president of Sony Classical. “Valérie and Mark are two of the most experienced and respected executives in the classical industry,” says Roscic. Both positions are effective Sept. 1, 2009. —Evan C. Jones, N.Y. G G G G G GOD IN ME G G G G G G 50. Songs NOT MEANT TO BE G G G G G G 13 ITCH 14 G Legend for HOT 100 AIRPLAY located below chart.
