She says producers should strive to be natural and avoid sound“So many spots sound like they are trying to convince you,” ing contrived. “The age of announcing is gone. The realistic kind BILLBOARD TOP 40 UPDATE of read is what’s in; the human approach, not the announcer.” Sounding natural can mean anything from not editing out every breath so conversation has a normal cadence to laughing in the middle of a spot. “If you are lucky enough to have someone who can really tell a story in 30 or 60 seconds when they laugh, giggle, pause or hiccup, it’s real.” It also means staying away from catchphrases, not repeating copy over and over, and not overdosing on sound effects MIKE STERN and production elements. Instead, Marshall suggests focusing EDITOR on when to turn down the volume on sound effects and even mike.stern@billboard.com using silence to accentuate important copy points. Another caveat: Avoid phone numbers. “Most people are not going to write down a number. They are going to listen for the site and go online. It’s just my opinion, but I’ve never agreed with putting phone numbers in spots since the Web became so prevalent.” Along with being natural, to create a truly great campaign, Marshall says spots have to be unique to grab the listener’s attention. “Normal or mundane won’t catch anybody’s ear anymore. They are numb to it.” To find inspiration Marshall looks at the websites of businesses that are similar to the one she’s building a spot for to get a feel for the industry. Then she sets out to create an emotional hook—something that tugs at the heart strings and makes the listener feel or want something. For example, instead of a Valentine’s Day spot for a f lorist that says, “You should buy a dozen roses,” it’s more moving to hear a women say, “I’d be happy if my husband brought me even one rose this year.” PAGE 2 OF 9 Interscope recording artist Zedd (right) recently stopped by Clear Channel dance/top 40 WKTU (103.5 KTU) New York to discuss his new single “Spectrum” with host Hollywood Hamilton. For example, at some point in time, nearly everyone has worried about being the victim of a crime. Cynaumon tapped into that when he was creating a spot for Lifelock, a service that protects people from identity theft. In the spot he told the story of a woman who not only had her identity stolen but unexpectedly wound up face to face with the thieves. “Everyone has had some anxiety about a crime or been in a place that made you nervous,” he says. “Once we tackled that, the advertising took off.” Of course not every product presents such an obvious shared experience to work with. So to conquer a challenge like helping his client BuildDirect. com sell flooring, Cynaumon set out to understand everything about the target audience by discussing it in depth with his client. He says just knowing that the average site visitor is a 39-year-old female isn’t enough. Dig deeper: What does she drive? How many kids does she have? How does she dress? What does she do during the day? That type of detailed information is what can help reveal a shared experience. While the BuildDirect.com spot also returned to the emotion of anxiety (touching on the lack of customer service at big-box hardware stores and outdated flooring at liquidators), not every spot has to rely on paranoia—you can push a lot of other emotional buttons. For ShoeMint.com, a club where women can buy designer shoes at reduced prices, Cynaumon tapped into the emotions women experience when they find a perfect pair of shoes. The copy reflected the feeling women get when their right foot glides into the most elegant shoe they’ve ever tried on and how hard it is not to smile at that moment, an experience the type of customers who join ShoeMint can relate to. He notes that the copy specifically mentioned the woman’s right foot because the majority of people try on the right shoe first. While that may seem minor, attention “The age of announcing is gone. The realistic kind of read is what’s in; the human approach, not the announcer.” —ROBIN MARSHALL Of course one of the most powerful emotions to use is humor, “Often that’s what listeners will remember and associate with the advertiser. Look at most Super Bowl commercials—they are very humorous.” THEN TRY APPLYING ADCOLOGY Cynaumon, who holds a Ph.D in psychology, takes Marshall’s belief that ads need an emotional hook a step farther by focusing on what he calls shared experiences, feelings that nearly everyone in the audience can relate to. This is part of a practice he calls “adcology,” which, according to his website, is defined as “the total integration of advertising and psychology for the express purpose of decreasing consumer resistance while creating immediate action.” BILLBOARD TOP 40 UPDATE to such details can make a spot much more realistic. It’s also important to focus on the other senses. For ShoeMint that meant recreating the sounds of an upscale shoe store with classical music and muted female laughter; a very different soundscape than re-creating the feel of a mall store. “You could almost smell great leather when you heard it.” In the end though, he says the key to success is relating to the listener. “Don’t envision your audience as 18 million people. You’ll never hit anyone that way. Instead, focus on a person that is the absolute target. Envision one person and talk to her.” OUTSIDE INFLUENCES: THE VALUE OF CROSS-PROMOTING Each week in Outside Inf luences we’ll share a piece of advice you might not have seen because it’s from someone outside of the world of radio and records. In a recent interview with Entrepreneur, Allison O’Neill, owner of children’s retail shop Bundle, talked about how to promote without money. One tactic she suggested is teaming with complementary businesses to share space in each other’s email blasts. She says partnering with other businesses has definitely helped build awareness of Bundle. For radio stations that lack marketing budgets, O’Neill’s suggestion could be a no-cost road to increasing audience. Consider partnering with nonprofit organizations or advertisers to spread the word about your station. Billboard. biz reports that the band is creating special playlists to help launch the service and will play a special kickoff concert. Even though it’s called the 2050 tour Wiz Khalifa is actually playing more concert dates in 2012, according to a Billboard.com article. Tickets for the dates, which begin in mid-October, are being sold through Khalifa’s website. A little more than 60% of Americans feel that they will be the ones to decide when they leave their current job, a number that’s down 12% in recent months. According to a Rasmussen study, 20% of respondents feel it will be their boss’ decision that will lead to them exiting their position. Across a three-month period ending in July, an average of nearly 40% of all mobile subscribers accessed a social media platform from their device. That number is up from just over 30% in the same period last year, according to a Marketing Charts article. The 2012 Country Music Award nominations include a few familiar names for top 40 fans: Taylor Swift received three nominations, Kelly Clarkson is up for female vocalist of the year, and Snoop Lion (previously known as Snoop Dogg) made the list for “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” his collaboration with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson. See the entire list of nominees at Billboard.biz. When Ryan Seacrest visited his hometown of Atlanta last week, he made a surprise appearance at an Enrique Iglesias/Jennifer Lopez show to announce the launch of Power 96.1. The new Clear Channel mainstream top 40 outlet will, of course, carry his syndicated show. PAGE 3 OF 9 The CHRonicler THE FUN (WITHOUT THE .) MIGHT BE COMING BACK To paraphrase William Shakespeare, now is the summer of our discontent. Never has so much airtime been given to so many songs about people so miserable. Or so it seems. If the summer of 2012 proved anything, it was that top 40’s success isn’t dependent on party rocking. Rihanna spent her summer vacation looking for the other half she never found. Gotye, Maroon 5 and Katy RICH APPEL Perry wallowed in post-breakup agony or catharsis. rich.appel@billboard.com Ellie Goulding broke big with a song about her fear of the dark. At least we had Flo Rida to “Whistle” past the graveyard. Like your CHRonicler, KHTT (K-Hits) Tulsa, Okla., PD Jet Black wonders why. Taking note also of the hits this summer from fun., Kelly Clarkson, Alex Clare and Jason Mraz, Black says: “This summer was different. Maybe [it’s] that many PDs are less guarded with music decisions than they used to be, because of the sheer number of ways our audience can access this stuff.” This is not to say that prior to 2012 and those other ways of accessing music, every warmweather song in power rotation was as bright as the summer sun. For some reason, summers in years ending in “2”—like this one—produce big hits that go against the grain. Ten summers GOTYE ago it was Nelly’s “Dilemma” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated.” In the summer of 1992, dance queen Madonna topped the chart with a ballad; summer ’82 gave us a breakup duet that must be on Gotye’s iPod: the Human League’s “Don’t You Want Me.” Going further back, the song that ruled the summer of 1972 featured its singer contemplating suicide (Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again [Naturally]”). The good news is relief may be on the way in the form of a couple of video sensations from—no surprise lately—outside the United States. It’s also not a shock that YouTube leads this charge after what “Call Me Maybe” did to resuscitate music video as a springboard for top 40 success. One of these is “Gangnam Style” by Korean rapper Psy, who’s the main reason I’ll be watching tonight’s Video Music Awards (otherwise known as MTV’s one night a year to pretend it’s still the old MTV). If 103 million views of “Gangnam” or Scooter Braun having signed Psy won’t convince you, maybe the toughest judges there are at Teens React will. One of those kids said “Gangnam” “could be the new Dougie.” “Bom Bom,” the recent U.K. No. 1 single by Sam and the Womp, may also have import potential. Like “Gangnam,” it’s fun and unusual, and the PSY video is “out there.” If Train’s current hit can feature a mariachi band, then there’s room for this eight-piece combo that plays what can best be described as Balkan electro-ska. Either or both could brighten top 40 in the coming months if PDs heed Black’s advice: “Don’t be afraid of it if your audience is already consuming it.” •••• BILLBOARD TOP 40 UPDATE PAGE 4 OF 9 with Wendy Goodman (@WendyDG) format is dominating. by MIKE STERN l Sometimes we can get too hyper-focused on our format and forget to look at what’s happening outside the world of top 40 radio. But every once in a while it’s probably smart to peek over the fence and see what’s going on in the world of adult top 40. So when RCA Records promoted Wendy Goodman to VP of promotion for West Coast operations and adult music, it seemed like the right time to check in with her and get a fresh perspective on what’s going on in her world. Goodman has a long history in the business. She started with Maverick Records and C2/Columbia before joining RCA 12 years ago. She took over as VP of promotion for adult formats in 2006 and just recently added oversight for the West Coast. l 1 What are the biggest challenges the label is facing today? The most fun for me so far this year has been P!nk’s “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” because I have been a real fan since the beginning of her career, so now it is a true honor to work her records. P!nk is obviously an incredible talent, but she is also unbelievably refreshing because of her openness and honesty. She also has one of the most magnetic personalities I have ever been around. I can’t wait for everyone to hear her upcoming album, The Truth About Love, coming out Sept. 18. 4 What’s the best way for l impactful way to communicate. I don’t necessarily know which are most valuable, but I have cards spanning most of the careers of players like Steve Garvey, George Brett, Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson, Carl Yastrzemski, Fernando Valenzuela, Rod Carew and Ozzie Smith. l 6 Name one RCA artist that you predict is going to be big for adult top 40 this fall. Despite its downturn, “Never” passes 1 million sold since its release (1.2 million). On Hot 100 Airplay, “Never” bounds 13-10 (71 million, up 6%) in its fourth week. The ascent to the Hot 100 Airplay top 10 marks Swift’s fastest, besting her five-week climb with “Mine,” the lead single from her last studio album, Speak Now, in 2010. “Never,” Swift’s fifth Hot 100 Airplay top 10, previews her fourth studio set, Red, due Oct. 22. With the Hot 100 points gap between “Whistle” and “Never” slim, streaming helps decide the winner. While “Whistle” ranks at No. 2 on On-Demand Songs, “Never” has not yet been made available to subscription streaming services that also contribute to the Hot 100’s data sources. Thus, it does not yet rank on the OnDemand Songs streaming chart. by GARY TRUST, KEITH CAULFIELD Flo Rida’s ‘Whistle’ Returns To No. 1 On Hot 100 Flo Rida’s “Whistle” returns to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week at No. 1, pushing Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” down to No. 2 after two weeks in charge. After first leading the Hot 100 three weeks ago, “Whistle” returns to the top perch, fueled by a 5-3 rise on Hot 100 Airplay (89 million, up 10%, according to Nielsen BDS). It slips 3-4 on Hot Dig- ital Songs (161,000, down 10%, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and holds at No. 2 on On-Demand Songs (751,000 on-demand streams, down 3%, according to BDS). “Whistle” wins a close race with Swift’s “Never,” as the former song decreases by just 1% in overall Hot 100 points and the latter slides by 11%. Once again, sales for “Never” drop, while the song’s radio airplay continues to surge. BIG MAC: For the first time since 1997, and only the third time ever, a Christian music album is No. 1 on the Billboard 200, as TobyMac scores his first leader with Eye on It, which bows with 69,000 copies, according to SoundScan. A Christian set had last led the Billboard 200 on Nov. 1, 1997, when LeAnn Rimes’ You Light Up My Life—Inspirational Songs spent its third and final week on top. Prior to Rimes’ reign, the only other Christian effort to crown the Billboard 200 was Bob Carlisle’s Butterf ly Kisses (Shades of Grace), which tallied a pair of weeks at No. 1 earlier in 1997, fueled by its hit title track. Although making his first trip to No. 1, TobyMac isn’t a stranger to the upper reaches of the Billboard 200, as Eye on It is his third top 10. As part of the trio dcTalk, he also charted five albums, including the No. 4-peaking Supernatural in 1998. Secular audiences might remember dcTalk best for its song “Between You and Me,” which reached No. 15 on Mainstream Top 40 in 1996. INDIE ALANIS: Alanis Morissette scores her sixth Billboard 200 top 10, as Havoc and Bright Lights enters at No. 5 (33,000). The set is the singer/songwriter’s first since leaving Maverick/Warner Bros. (where she had spent her entire U.S. career), as it was released through Collective Sounds via RED Distribution. First single “Guardian” reached No. 27 on Adult Top 40 and has sold 74,000 downloads, according to SoundScan. •••• TobyMac attacks. MAINSTREAM TOP 40 PANEL — 140 STATIONS Albany, N.Y.
