A score above zero means listeners are less likely than usual to switch while a negative score indicates more station switching than normal. While M Scores are most commonly compared to callout, MIKE STERN Generali explains there is a distinct difference between the EDITOR two forms of research—M Scores are based on behavior Mike.Stern@Billboard while callout is based on opinion. “Most forms of research ask consumers what they think of a product or how likely they are to buy it,” Generali says. “Very few are behavioral counting what people are actually purchasing.” PPM data does just that: measure people’s actual behavior and create a correlation between the song that’s playing and what people do about it. WHAT’S IT ALL MEAN? Just like any tool, M Score is only effective if you know how to use it. Rushing to judge a new song based upon its M Score too quickly can be a mistake, In an attempt to keep programmers from jumping to conclusions there are certain thresholds a song must achieve before it will receive an M Score. A song has to be in rotation for at least four weeks and has to receive at least six spins per week. Even then, Generali preaches caution. “It takes time to get used to a song,” he says. “Programmers have to be careful.” He once again stresses that picking a song is art, not science. “Adding a song is really a contract between the PD and the promo person. If you sign that contract, give the song a chance.” Instead of jumping the gun, Generali suggests watching for patterns. If a song’s PHILIPPE GENERALI score is erratic, up one week and down the next without any particular pattern, the song is unreliable, much like an inconsistent baseball player where every trip to the plate is an adventure. Photo by Sara Azoulay for iHeartRadio NOTABLE TRENDS After watching a few years of M Score data roll out Generali has noticed some notable trends, starting with the fact that listeners really are song-driven. “It’s not so much about the artist,” Generali says. “When a new song from Lady Gaga or Adele comes out you’d think people are going to be huge fans right away, but it takes a little bit of time for listeners to get used to it.” He says rhythmic artists tend to get stronger M Scores earlier than other genres, sometimes even after just a few weeks. Generali isn’t entirely sure why this happens, but he thinks it could be that fans of rhythmic acts have more interest in learning the lyrics to a song than consumers of other genres where CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE NOW 12 ISSUES FOR JUST $12 BILLBOARD TOP 40 UPDATE there might be more emphasis on the beat or instruments. In closing, Generali leaves us with a positive report for a recent single release. Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain” is “off to a great start.” Despite only 27,000 aggregated spins at the time of the interview, Generali says, “It’s getting a beautiful reaction very early. More consumers have an Internet-capable mobile device than a desktop or laptop computer, reports a new study conducted by Google. According to an AdAge article, the difference in the United States has grown to 10% (76% to 68%). The popularity of football affects radio listening as well as TV viewing patterns. According to Dial Global 22.9 million people tuned in to the radio broadcasts of last weekend’s conference championship games. The numbers come from a study executed by Edison Research. Google is trying to become the new EAS system. The company has launched a new emergency alerts page where consumers can find information about catastrophes anywhere in the world. CNet reports that users can look for information through Google maps or by going to the emergency alerts page directly. PAGE 3 OF 9 The CHRonicler THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ADELE Among the things we’ve learned from Adele’s onewoman coup d’état of American pop: Top 40’s audience isn’t necessarily fixated on singles, we still love a game (and tempo) changer, and it’s all right to cry between all that partying. Adele’s 21—which tops the Billboard 200 for a 17th week, nearing the first anniversary of its release—is quite likely the first album in the digital age that top 40 listeners have felt the need to own. The format’s RICH APPEL success with dance-pop has come at a price (make that Rich.Appel@Billboard a lower price) as it has helped turn back time to when listeners got music one song at a time. Adele’s now-three Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s (with a fourth certainly possible) have made the audience want more Adele, including her debut album, 19—no small accomplishment. Equity Communications’ WAYV Atlantic City, N.J., was one of the first top 40s to add “Rolling in the Deep” more than a year ago. Equity PD Rob Garcia explains: “Why [did] listeners respond to this song so passionately? [Because] you don’t only hear Adele’s music: You feel it. With the sameness in a lot of music these days, Adele was just what we needed.” Michael Bryan, PD at WXXL (XL106.7) Orlando, Fla., another early believer in “Rolling,” concurs. “We target ADELE women, and Adele speaks to them at their core. It’s a different sound than we’re used to, but that’s what makes top 40 great.” It’s been a while, but we’ve been down this road before. If you remember the ’90s, that was when Alanis Morissette also spoke to women (and like Adele, to an ex-lover) with her mega-breakout hit, “You Oughta Know,” the first of five from her Jagged Little Pill album that teased the top of the chart for more than a year. Around that same time came the debut release from Jewel, whose “Foolish Games” may have been the sonic prequel to “Someone Like You.” You can go further back, to the days of Archie Bell’s “Tighten Up” and Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey,” to show that dancing and crying (respectively, in the example above) have long coexisted on top 40. It just took Adele to ROB GARCIA return the latter to its rightful place. “Saturday Night Live” picked up on that in this sketch that aired as “Someone Like You” was hitting its stride a few months ago. Is there a Kleenex tie-in looming? Discuss. Perhaps most important, Adele’s success reminds us of top 40’s raison d’être. Garcia reminds us that you can play Adele next to Pitbull, “because [while] both are different musically, [they are] equally loved. Playing popular music regardless of genre was and will always be the beauty and uniqueness of top 40. Our powers right now are Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain,” Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away” and Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling.” Mix shows are about flow and flavor, and Spin does just that. We have the tracks you are dying to hear with the OMG cuts that bring you back to yesterday. In one word, the format is unpredictable. 3 Describe what the format l So often in radio we complain about a lack of innovation and how everything has become so cookie-cutter, which is why you have to give credit to Rob Austin and the team at Jamtraxx for stepping up and trying something new called Spin-FM. The all mix-show format recently debuted on the Davidson Media Group’s brokered classic hits WOLT (103.3), Greenville, S.C. The format airs from 6 p.m–6 a.m. every day, as well as in other blocks of time, depending on the day. 1 How did the idea for this l new format come about? It came up at one of our weekly programming meetings between [JamTraxx Media president/CEO] Joe Del- fin and I during a discussion about how we can re-energize CHR radio without reinventing the wheel. Spin is about taking that creativity of mix shows to the next level. sounds like. We may not be that much different musically from WFBC, but where we are different is in our presentation, which includes airing fewer commercials. The format is presented in a mix-show fashion, which means the songs are blended without the need for jingles. Jocks will eventually be utilized, especially to make it live and local. In terms of CHR, it’s about evolution. It now becomes another mainstream format that can act as an alternative to a much more urban rhythmic CHR, the dreaded iPod or other digital devices/content delivery methods. 4 What sort of non-musical l elements round out the format? Flow is a non-musical element to me, because with a mix show it’s impera- tive that it just has to f low. You don’t program the song because you absolutely have to. You program it because you need it to tell the whole story. There are ways to massage and make things work without having to fire a jingle or anti-sweeper to connect one song to the other on the station. 5 How is the arrangement l with WOLT structured? Very simply. It’s a partnership between two entities: JamTraxx Media and Davidson Media Group. It’s an effort by us to try something new in a top 60 market on a frequency that has a lot of history. We are very appreciative that [WOLI-AM/FM and WOLT-FM operations manager] Craig Debolt believed in our vision, as did the management team of WOLT-FM. 6 Can this be a 24-hour a day, l full-time format? Absolutely. That’s the idea. Everyone is trying to develop something around CHR and reinvent the wheel. I say, “Take a step back and look at what you already have and capitalize on that.” All it takes is straight-up logic and love for methodology. We’ve already crashed the stream server, which is a good sign, and the phones have been off the hook. Adele Doubles Up Atop Billboard 200, Hot 100 It seems that every week there’s a new Adele-related accolade to tout. This week is no different, as her album 21 logs its 17th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 95,000 sold (down 9%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. 21 has now been No. 1 longer than any album since the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” wrapped a 20week run at No. 1 on the May 29, 1993, survey. On the Billboard Hot 100, meanwhile, “Set Fire to the Rain” takes over at the summit, dethroning Rihanna’s “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris, after 10 weeks. The ascent makes history: 21 becomes the first album by a single artist to top the Billboard 200 concurrently with three Hot 100 No. 1s. Previously, lead 21 single “Rolling in the Deep” began a seven-week Hot 100 reign the week of May 21, 2011, when 21 was in its sixth week in charge of the Billboard 200. Follow-up “Someone Like You” crowned the Hot 100 the week of Sept. 17, 2011. In the song’s fifth and final week at No. 1 (Nov. 5), 21 returned to the Billboard 200 apex for a 13th frame. With 21 at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for another four weeks as of this week, “Fire” (Adele’s third career Hot 100 topper) makes the set the first by a single artist to have led the Billboard 200 concurrently with three Hot 100 No. 1s. In the 53 years that the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 have co-existed, the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack is the only other album to have managed the trifold concurrent feat. The set headed up the Billboard 200 while the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive” and “Night Fever” and Yvonne Elliman’s “If I Can’t Have You” all reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in 1978. (The spirit of ’78 is apparently alive and well on the Hot 100. The “Glee” cast’s remake of Olivia NewtonJohn and John Travolta’s “Summer Nights” enters the chart at No. 88. The original, from the big-screen adaptation of the musical “Grease,” rose to No. 5 in September 1978). LEGENDARY: Etta James makes a powerful impact on Billboard charts following her death on Jan. 20. On the Billboard 200, she nets her highest-charting album ever as The Best of Etta James—20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection rises 162-46 with 8,000 sold (up 149%). James’ catalog of albums sold 30,000 copies in the chart’s tracking week, a 378% increase. James’ famed single “At Last” was her best-selling song of the week, shifting 63,000 and enabling its re-entry at No. 29 on the Hot Digital Songs chart (up 1,361%). For the week, James’ catalog of songs sold 118,000 downloads— more than half courtesy of “At Last” — up 1,091%. James’ voice continues to be heard on two current hits by way of a sample. Her 1962 Hot 100 hit “Something’s Got a Hold on Me,” which peaked at No. 37, is woven into both Flo Rida’s “Good Feeling” (No. 3) and Avicii’s “Levels” (No. 68). •••• ETTA JAMES Fans remember the unforgettable Etta James.
