This includes all sources of artificial light such as ceiling, wall and pendant lights as well as all sources of natural light. Daylight Down lights Natural daylight enters the room through windows and architectural openings in walls and ceilings and connects the inside to the outside. For accent and general lighting, these types of lights are installed overhead to fulfill this purpose. Wall lights Pendant light Mounted directly to the wall, these types of lights contribute to the ambiance of a room with direct or indirect light. Pendant lights combine the benefits of direct and indirect lighting and offer a multitude of opportunities to combine accent and general lighting. 2 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Light in furniture Light in furniture expands the possibilities of permanently installed light sources to include opportunities for personal expression. The result: More individuality and flexibility for the residents. Due to state-of-the-art technologies such as plug and play and low voltage lighting, such systems are now easy to install and use. Display cabinet lighting Drawer lighting Light in shelving, cabinets and display cabinets not only provides a perfect overview, it also allows displayed items to be presented in an upscale and stylish manner. For comfort and safety: Drawers with integrated lighting guarantee the reach for the right cutlery item and add convenience to the day. LED strips Built-in spotlights LED strips highlight and accentuate details in furniture in a creative manner. Due to the minimal space requirement, they are particularly useful to highlight design features such as gaps and shaped items. Built-in spotlights provide directional highlighting of objects in display cabinets and on display shelves. 3 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Light technology, light effects and light impressions For a fundamental understanding of light, it is important to differentiate between lighting technology, light effects and light impressions. The dynamics amongst the three vary and together shape the overall impression of light. Theory Light technology Includes all technical measures to influence the overall light situation. It is the factual standard in the planning of light. Light effects Describes the alternating interaction of light with colours and materials and how it is perceived. Key in this relationship is the emotional effect of the light. Light impressions This is the individual interpretation and recognition of light in a setting. It is primarily focused on the individual’s perceptions of light. 4 Light effects Light technology Light impressions Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Practice Defi finition of the technologies: – The type of light ( e.g. halogen, LED/RGB, fluorescent, etc. ) – Voltage ( 230 V, 12 V) – Light temperature ( cold / warm, unit of measure: Kelvin ) – Light level ( the unit is Lux ) – Level of light in a room ( illuminance under consideration of reflective surfaces ) – Direction of light ( refraction angle ) Aspects of light effects: – – – – – – Mood light Work light ( task lighting ) Contrast ( bright / dark ) Emphasis ( effect lighting ) Colour ( reflection ) Material and structure ( light refraction ) Aspects of light impressions: – – – – – – Conveys safety Accentuation ( personalisation ) Orientation Information Communication Comfort (comfort areas ) 5 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Lighting technology glossary Light bulbs By definition, this includes all electrical equipment that generate light. In the context of light there are four types that apply: Fluorescent, halogen and energy saving bulbs, as well as LEDs. Fluorescent tube Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent tubes are filled with glowing gases and the interior of the glass tube is coated with fluorescent materials. Both types function in a similar manner and require a starter or ballast. (low-loss ballast – electronic ballast). In the smaller compact fluorescent tube a starter and the ballast are typically integrated. Energy saving bulbs Energy saving bulbs are similar in size to incandescent light bulbs but use significantly less energy to generate the same amount of light. However, they are not dimmable and do not achieve the same quality of light as halogen or traditional light bulbs. Usually, compact fluorescent tubes are described as energy saving lamps. Halogen bulbs The differentiation between halogen bulbs is in the operating voltage of a normal high voltage version and the low voltage version that requires a transformer. In addition there are halogen light bulbs and metal vapour lamps. Typical for halogen bulbs is the development of high temperatures, but there is no other bulb that achieves the outstanding light qualities of halogen bulbs. LED / RGB LED (Light Emitting Diodes) are called semiconductors. They can vary the characteristics of their light and achieve nearly the full spectrum of colour. Unlike traditional light bulbs, LEDs emit very little heat, consume little power and have a much higher life expectancy. 6 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Light fi fixtures A light fixture is the outer shell or housing that holds, operates and protects a light source. It distributes and directs light and it protects from glare. A light fixture is a creative element. It can be portable or permanently installed. Recess mounted lights Recess mounted lights are space efficient and easily integrated in places such as cabinets or suspended ceilings. They are also suitable for architectural lighting and lights in furniture. The variety of applications therefore is broad. Down lights These are lights that are installed to ceilings or on the underside of furniture items. The differentiation to recess mounted lights is that they are not integrated, but surface mounted. Surface mounted lights Surface mounted lights are standalone lights. They can be fastened and attached to a multitude of components with no requirement for integration. They can be equipped to fulfil a multitude of special functions. For example, they could be swivelling or have an integrated light switch. Track lights Track lights are lights that are ready to install modules that may include preinstalled light components. With the track surface mounted, the lights can be mounted in the desired positions and connected to a power source. 7 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Parameter for the effects of light Colour temperature (in Kelvin) Illuminance (in Lux) Light distribution The colour temperature is the measure for the colour impression of a light source, measured in Kelvin (K). The standard for sunny daylight is 5,500 K, in fog approximately 8,000 K and just before sunrise it is up to 12,000 K. Artificial light imitates various light situations: The light emitted by a fluorescent tube achieves a colour temperature up to 5,000 K, halogen light to 3,000 K and a candle to 1,500 K. IIluminance (commonly called light level) is a term that quantifies light incident on a surface. It is influenced and reduced by the distance of the source. This simplified diagram is intended to act as an aid for the planner and shows the light intensities at a distance of 50 cm, which is applicable to a light in furniture. It was measured in a black box without ambient light with a standard lux meter. Specified is the maximum value in the centre. The angle can be calculated based on the loss in light up to half-peak intensity. 12 2V/1.25W 2 12V/50W 2 Standards for illumination of interior rooms Illuminance recommendation 22º 22 2 Interior room type, the purpose of the room or the use Recommended illuminance Kitchen and dining areas, Meeting rooms, Cash desk areas, Store centre areas 300 – 500 Lux Living rooms, Bathrooms, Reception desks (Office, Hotel, Retirement homes), Store display panels, Restaurant areas 300 Lux Bedrooms, Hallways/Guidance, Rest rooms, Spa and Wellness areas 200 Lux max.1700 m 17 lx l 50cm Spotlights for small areas. 12V/1.5W 50cm max.1260 12 lx The most popular angle for spotlights is 35°. 230V/21W 62º 62 max.114 1 lx Display Windows at night 35º 35 5 180º 8 80 50 cm max.250 2 lx 50cm m 100 Lux Flood lights for soft lighting. Technically speaking, It creates a balance between the user and the light source. To achieve this function there is a multitude of switches and control elements available. Interconnected conventional or digital modules expand the possibilities, such as continuous dimming. The eye optically measures how light is absorbed or reflected from various different surfaces. Therefore the light significantly influences how each individual recognizes colours, brightness, distances, contrast and finishes. The respective light effect always depends on the interaction between the light source and the object as shown in the following examples. vvv Mood With the availability of pre-programmed light scenarios it is possible to switch back and forth between work light (right) and mood light (left). Contrast Contrast describes the difference between bright and dark areas. Identical light generates more contrast on brighter surfaces (right) and less on dark surfaces (left). 10 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Emphasis Should stronger light effects be desired, (right), the general light should be dimmed. Colour Colours are dependent on the light and influence the overall impression of a room. When selecting colours it is important to consider the overall lighting plan. The example shows the impact of identical luminosity: A dark floor (left) reflects less light than a lighter floor (centre). And a colourful floor (right) reflects the colour. Material Different materials reflect and refract light differently. The light effects are strongly influenced by these choices. 11 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Light impressions Light is an essential element of living for people. Accordingly light is important for our health and overall well-being. Daylight of course plays the largest role. But in living and work environments artificial light sources have a significant effect on atmosphere and quality of life. The flexibility of light in furniture brings important aspects such as security, accentuating, orientation, information and comfort into centre stage. Security A substantial task for light is to convey security. Dark corner areas evoke fear and danger in people. Therefore the deployment of light in furniture, such as drawers, as added value creates a sense of heightened security in daily life. Accentuation Modern light in furniture provides the user with the tools to accentuate and highlight individual rooms and furniture items to create unique and personal lighting scenes. 12 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture Orientation In their most basic function as light sources for all users, young and old, lights are indispensable orientation points in a room. By integrating lights into furniture, additional direction and purpose can be conveyed throughout the room – and thereby improving the pure architectural light. Information Light as a carrier of information is an important aspect in the planning of furniture and rooms. Therefore the illumination of information carriers is as important as the indirect communication and purposeful use of light and dark areas. Comfort Light creates comfort. By using light zones and individual lighting of specific items in a room one creates different zones of wellbeing and comfort – a very special and valuable aspect of daily living. 13 Basic Planning Guidelines Light in furniture The 360° project services from Häfele for light in furniture and furnishings Halogen Fluorescent LED System lights Power supply units Accessories Control technology Comprehensive product range A competent partner in project management The Häfele product range for light in furniture is set up to accomplish a wide variety of tasks. At the same time, the living room is an expression of your own personality and a place of presentation. To lighting design, this means: Versatile, flexible light sources perfectly matched to the circumstances. Soft and comfortable bright light also in otherwise dark corners. Atmospheric accent lighting for a cosy evening. 16 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Living A.1 Living room Light effects Several aspects determine the selective use of light in the living room: Functionality, emotionality and status. When searching for a particular book, for example, it is important that the respective areas are brightly illuminated. When reading comfortably, a warm reading light is important. The combination of light sources that are controlled centrally and within proximity allows both and simultaneously upgrades the living room attractively. Functional light Dimmable spotlights in the ceiling provide flexible room light. Spotlights effectively draw attention to special decorative objects. Comfort light Individually placed recess mounted lights simplify the orientation in the bookshelf. Emotional light CDs and DVDs at a glance - by interior illuminated drawers The soft lighting effect of the sideboard enables a visually pleasant, glare-free view of the television. Light on edges of glass shelves: A harmonious combination, possibly as the ideal background for creative design. Plinth lighting improves the perception of space by visually setting the sideboard apart from the floor. The indirect lighting of the shelf structures the room by a gently increasing light. Soft light seemingly creates the illusion of a floating ceiling panel. HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 17 Light Solutions for Living A.1 Living room Solution concepts for the living room The versatile use of the living room requires different light sources: The basic brightness can be controlled variably by continuously adjustable halogen down lights. Wall panels back-lit with fluorescent lights give the room a horizon and guarantee a glare-free background light for watching television. Focused spotlights set accents on shelves. Drawers illuminated by LEDs increase comfort. 2 1 7 2 5 6 3 4 The combination of centrally controlled basic lighting and locally-controlled illumination of specific areas allows an individual lighting design. 3 Connection example for TV sideboard: Plinth and background lighting with radio remote control (825.73.710). 18 4 7 Connection example for drawer lighting: Motion detector integrated in light. Good lighting for working and beautiful lighting while dining are the requirements for a lighting concept. Special attention must be paid here to the materials of the kitchen: Precious wood fronts and other dark, matt surfaces absorb the light while bright high-gloss fronts reflect it. Plenty of light on the working area for safe and comfortable work in the kitchen. Soft background light and mild accent lighting create a pleasant atmosphere. 20 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Living A.2 Kitchen Light effects Extensively illuminated work areas are the brightest points of the kitchen. The ambient lighting accentuates surfaces in an optimal way and upgrades corners. Illuminated interior drawers and internal cabinets offer special comfort. Low contrast lighting is recommended for such storage areas. Functional light Ideal for the illumination of work areas: Glare-free light that directly falls onto the table top without casting a shadow. Vertical surface directed light illuminates base units into the farthest corner. Comfort light Low-contrast light in cabinets simplifies searching and locating. Emotional light Illuminated drawers guarantee the best overview even at dark ambient light. Light behind glass lends transparency and lightness to wall cabinet fronts. Plinth lighting provides an elegant night guiding light. Bright work surfaces reflect light and are pleasant for working due to low contrast. Dark surfaces absorb light and increase contrast. Design tip Underlit shelves transform dishes into beautiful objects. HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 21 Light Solutions for Living A.2 Kitchen Solution concepts for the kitchen There are generally two options for the lighting design in kitchens: On the one hand, extensive and neutral appearing fluorescent lights that illuminate work areas in a functional way. On the other hand, light sources such as halogen spotlights for a warm and continuous light. LED spotlights offer a modern alternative because they work without generating heat. They are also distinguished by a long service life. Lights used in kitchens should also be easy to clean due to the special environmental conditions. 3 2 5 1 7 6 4 7 Work area and living area in one: Functional and emotional light in the kitchen must meet high demands. 1 Connection example for worktop lighting with sensor switch (820.17.730). 22 3 7 4 Connection example for indirect lighting: Controlling shelf, wall unit and plinth lighting simultaneously. This is the cosy retreat for reading, watching TV or chatting. However, clothing is also stored here, maybe even in a walk-in wardrobe, here‘s the place for dressing and changing clothes. Light plays a crucial role in feeling good in all of this. A clever combination of direct and indirect light sources clearly upgrades the bedroom. Back-lit furniture creates glare-free ambient lighting. 24 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Living A.3 Bedroom Light effects Selecting clothes in the morning in a bright and colour-neutral light without disturbing a sleeping partner is made possible by a walk-in wardrobe with a glare-free directed, warm light inside. And the wardrobe lighting spreads soft, idyllic background lighting during the evening. Tiny light sources support the orientation at night. Functional light The proper framework for lively conversations: Pleasant, continuously adjustable down lights create warm light. The reading light on the bed should be bright but glare-free and thereby only illuminate a limited area. Even someone who is not quite awake will be able to find the right shirt with the illuminated wardrobe rail. The sensor-controlled orientation light automatically provides the necessary light when getting up without disturbing the partner. The shelf lighting not only helps in the search for the proper reading material, it also disseminates unobtrusive basic light. Comfort light Spotlights with their colour-neutral cold white light let clothes appear as they are. Emotional light Design tip The question “light on or off” is no longer a topic with modern lighting technology. Lights with flexible arms can be rotated so that they only illuminate a limited area, such as a book in any reclining or seating position. LED lights also emit very little heat. The contour illumination by concealed fixtures generates an ideal base light. Despite this central importance, the entrance area is frequently quite neglected in lighting technology. A bright ceiling light in many hallways meets the desire for functional lighting of the room, while options for an attractive presentation generally remain unexploited. Intelligent lighting designs counter this with a balanced blend of comfort and accent lighting. Functional and comfort light generally contribute to the practical needs of the hallway. Emotional light transforms the hallway into an attractive ensemble. 32 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Living A.5 Hallway Light effects For a quick look in the mirror, it should be brightly illuminated. The same applies to the key shelf. Shelves in the cabinets require soft illumination. The hallway furniture is shown to an advantage in a neutral light. The back-lit hat shelf creates ambience and counters the effect of dark areas. Functional light The extensively illuminated shelf always guarantees the right access to sunglasses or keys. Spotlights above the mirror offer sufficient brightness for quickly making yourself up. Comfort light The illuminated wardrobe rail is not only practical, but also an attractive design element. Emotional light When suitably illuminated, the shelf in the sideboard can be used comfortably. Light also provides an overview and order inside the furniture. The back-lit mirror is an eye-catcher and marks the ambience of the room. Design tip Dark walls and floors swallow an extreme amount of light and thus require a significantly higher light intensity. Using bright illuminated spaces seemingly creates the illusion that the room is larger, since bright surfaces reflect light better and enhance it. The illuminated hallway furniture not only contributes to an intimate atmosphere, but it also makes narrow hallways appear wider. The reception desk and lobby are therefore the business card of a hotel. The reception area is a place of arrival, communication and information as a central starting point for guests. The lighting concept emphasizes a pleasant atmosphere. It simplifies the orientation. And it supports additional functions, such as the presentation of informational materials. Good glare-free lighting will visually set the reception desk area apart from its immediate surroundings. There is no second chance for the first impression: The design of the reception area establishes the quality, value and comfort. Halogen lights over the display shelving on the back of the reception desk can be selectively controlled. The guest can therefore be easily oriented. The cleanliness of the facility is also emphasized by the bright light. A mild, direct light, which lets the user appear clearly, but not too pale, is part of the mirror. Lighting concepts with harmonious elements increasingly assert themselves in that area. Functional and still emotional: The lighting concept should communicate hygiene, quality, value and discretion. A special kaleidoscope of colours: The wash basin changes colour using LED / RGB background lighting. 84 Freely programmable, the colour can be adjusted to match e.g. the time of day, season, etc. HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Hotels D.5 Rest room Light effects Cleanliness, orientation and a protected atmosphere wait for the user in the rest room area. Functional aspects are therefore in the foreground in lighting design. However, the lighting of the toilet facilities can also show the creativity of the host: By the complete absence of direct light, for example. Functional light Illuminated corners remove the room‘s architectural severity. Indirect fluorescent light structures the wall and softly illuminates the wash basin. Comfort light Emotional light LED strips are an excellent design element and break up large areas by emphasizing the vertical. The back-lit wall toilet scores with a surprise effect. Illuminated edges put elegant accents in sanitary rooms. Decorative objects also have an effect thanks to the combination of direct and indirect light. HÄFELE Light Solutions The integrated mirror light works when checking whether the tie has come undone. Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 An original alternative to the classic room lighting: Back-lit edges and reflexes in the partition wall. 85 Light Solutions for Hotels D.5 Rest room Solution concepts for the rest room Especially in wet areas, but also in all other areas of the building, the corresponding installation regulations and standards must be met. DIN VDE 0100 Part 701 regulates the requirements and defines four room zones with different security demands. Electrical appliances and lights must have an adequate degree of protection (IP identification). Creative lighting design, such as an illuminated glass wash basin, or back-lit toilets with LED give the hotel‘s rest room a new dimension. 2 3 5 1 6 4 Cold light colours from direct and indirect light sources generate a feeling of cleanliness. 3 Connection example: Edge lighting, WC door, centrally controlled. 86 4 5 Connection example: Underlighting on wash basins with colour change, centrally controlled. HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 87 Light Solutions for Retirement Homes E.1 Reception desk Light in the foyer and at the reception desk: Welcome The entrance area welcomes residents and visitors of a retirement home: It conveys a cosy and comfortable atmosphere at first glance. At the same time, it offers guidance and shows the way to the other areas of the building. The reception area with reception desk is also a focal point. Appropriate lighting and signs reflect these requirements. Different lighting conditions in front and behind the door should be compensated for. The challenge in lighting design in the reception area is the harmonious interaction of the atmosphere, room lighting, guidance and orientation. Regardless of the lighting concept, the reception desk must function as a work area and have sufficient illumination. 88 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Retirement Homes E.1 Reception desk Light effects The lighting supports the exchange of information at the reception desk. Balanced lighting conditions via appropriate proportions of vertical illuminance guarantee that the participants in a conversation can see each other well without being blinded. Additional lighting accents in the vertical make the reception area an attractive and representative centre of attraction. Functional light Comfort light Spotlights in a suspended ceiling ideally complement the room lighting by subtly illuminating the work area. The mailbox and keyboard are clearly presented with bright recess lighting. Down lights are not only a design element: They simplify the orientation for the seniors and provide security. Emotional light Overview into the furthest corner: Interior illuminated drawers and cabinet compartments make it possible. Uplights in the rear panel give the room a bright and friendly atmosphere. Older people are moving more safely in bright rooms. Compact wall lights create the conditions for it. Small picture lights set points and fully accentuate pictures. HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Brightly illuminated niches effectively expand the space. 89 Light Solutions for Retirement Homes E.1 Reception desk Solution concepts for the foyer and reception area A cylindrical illuminance from 400 to 500 lx at eye level (line of vision) is logical as a basic light in the entrance and reception area. This corresponds to a horizontal illuminance of 200 to 300 lx on the ground. Glare should be avoided. Another objective of the lighting concept is a clear colour scheme, such as through the use of appropriate coloured light bulbs. If directions are defined by the floor covering, it is supported by the lighting. It would be logical to also integrate appropriately coordinated signs and seating options in the lighting design. 2 4 5 3 1 Generally, the room lighting in the retirement homes should be surface directed to avoid irritating reflections. Spotlights and side lights are only suitable for accent lighting and accentuating specific elements. 5 1 2 4x 4 2x 4x Purposefully placed light in furniture brings brightness into shaded areas and prevents dark corners. 90 Connection example for indirect lighting: Reception front light and uplight, centrally controlled. The lighting concept provides suitable lighting for each use and for each desired ambience: Bright and transparent for an active experience, soft light with warm light colours for a cosy gathering in the evening. The community room is the most important place for communication and movement for many residents. The accent lighting on the side opposite from daylight creates a congenial atmosphere. Ambient lighting for lively conversations in the evening helps the dimmed room lighting and brightens dark corners. 92 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Retirement Homes E.2 Community room Light effects The focus of the lighting design is the illumination of the tables. Service areas, however, will be illuminated with soft glowing lights. Exceptions are the buffet, the counter and the cash registers in self-service restaurants. A sufficient lighting level at a harmonious brightness distribution is required, so that people who are limited in their perceptive faculties can also see well. Glare – perhaps caused through the reflection on shiny surfaces – must be avoided. Functional light Many small light sources create more atmosphere than even room lighting. Down lights provide structure to the wall and emphasize its colour through reflection. Comfort light Finding the right thing easily and quickly: Through light in the wall unit. Dishes can also be grasped safely by older people when well illuminated. The effect of the vivid flames should not be disturbed by artificial light at the fireplace. The bathroom aside, this usually consists of one room, which combines all of the functions: Hallway, living room and bedroom, kitchen and dining room. A good lighting design meets all of these requirements. As in a modern hotel, the living areas of a retirement home include the needs of the residents as well as those of the room staff. There are many dark areas, even in bright daylight. Illuminated by light in the furniture, they are still easy to use. Illuminated and back-lit surfaces support the lighting of the room and upgrade the room. 96 HÄFELE Light Solutions Project service +49 (0) 74 52 / 95-888 Light Solutions for Retirement Homes E.3 Apartments / Residences Light effects Lighting suitable for senior living considers the specific vision of the residents: On the one hand, the illuminance required increases in age, but at the same time, the glare sensitivity increases as well. Narrowly focused, directed light is therefore less suitable. Rather, in principle, higher illuminance levels and much indirect lighting are basically the most important specifications for living areas in a retirement home. In addition, the proper lighting for seniors is crucial in contributing to the well-being and greater safety in the orientation. Functional light Light in drawers does not only have comfort value in a retirement home. Shelf light and illuminated wardrobe rails facilitate the orientation in the closet. Comfort light Light behind cabinet doors visually make it easier to see and retrieve items. Emotional light Illuminated glass shelves and back-lit sideboards create an intimate atmosphere in a darkened room. Avoiding dark corners is especially important in retirement homes. Cherished pieces shine even more effectively thanks to a small spotlight. Desgin tip Current-carrying skirting is an elegant solution and enables the power supply through flexible sockets, and can also be retrofitted. The soft radiant light of dimmable recess mounted halogen down lights is recommended for lighting in the shower or for reading in the bathtub. The eyes of elderly people adapt to differences in brightness more slowly, which makes the orientation during the nightly walk to the bathroom more difficult, for example. The night lighting of the bathroom is designed so bright that it guarantees safety without straining the eyes. Light fixtures with a warm white colour and excellent colour reflection are recommended for lighting on the mirror. 6 1 3 6 4 5 2 Generally, the functional light in the bathroom is cold white and surface directed.
