Individualistic
Design Element
Living rooms and work spaces are more unique than ever before. The expectation of functionality and comfort in furniture, furnishings and buildings is growing steadily. The design of interior lighting concepts plays a key role; it dictates
the mood and ambiance of a room and thereby determines the quality of the
overall space design.
Additional lights in cabinets, compartments and suspended ceilings can
enhance and supplement the light from traditional wall and ceiling light
fi xtures effectively. The planning of light in furniture and furnishings puts a
multitude of demands on architects, electricians, contractors and finishers,
and even developers and operators. And now for the first time we at Häfele
put this important element of light planning at the centre of a comprehensive
collection of ideas.

Light in a room
Differentiation and interaction between
light in a room and light in furniture
Light in a room
The light in a room is comprised of all light sources that are built into the
architecture and design of a room. This includes all sources of artificial light
such as ceiling, wall and pendant lights as well as all sources of natural light.
Daylight
Down lights
Natural daylight enters the room through windows and
architectural openings in walls and ceilings and connects
the inside to the outside.
For accent and general lighting, these types of lights are
installed overhead to fulfill this purpose.
Wall lights
Pendant light
Mounted directly to the wall, these types of lights
contribute to the ambiance of a room with direct or
indirect light.
Pendant lights combine the benefits of direct and indirect
lighting and offer a multitude of opportunities to combine
accent and general lighting.

Light in furniture
Light in furniture
Light in furniture expands the possibilities of permanently installed light sources
to include opportunities for personal expression. The result: More individuality and
flexibility for the residents. Due to state-of-the-art technologies such as plug and play
and low voltage lighting, such systems are now easy to install and use.
Display cabinet lighting
Drawer lighting
Light in shelving, cabinets and display cabinets not only
provides a perfect overview, it also allows displayed items
to be presented in an upscale and stylish manner.
For comfort and safety: Drawers with integrated lighting
guarantee the reach for the right cutlery item and add
convenience to the day.
LED strips
Built-in spotlights
LED strips highlight and accentuate details in furniture in a creative
manner. Due to the minimal space requirement, they are particularly
useful to highlight design features such as gaps and shaped items.
Built-in spotlights provide directional highlighting of objects
in display cabinets and on display shelves.

Light technology, light effects
and light impressions
For a fundamental understanding of light, it is important to
differentiate between lighting technology, light effects and
light impressions. The dynamics amongst the three vary
and together shape the overall impression of light.
Theory
Light technology
Includes all technical measures to
influence the overall light situation.
It is the factual standard in the
planning of light.
Light effects
Describes the alternating interaction
of light with colours and materials
and how it is perceived. Key in this
relationship is the emotional effect
of the light.
Light impressions
This is the individual interpretation
and recognition of light in a setting.
It is primarily focused on the individual’s perceptions of light.

Lighting technology glossary
Light bulbs
By definition, this includes all electrical equipment that generate light.
In the context of light there are four types that apply: Fluorescent, halogen
and energy saving bulbs, as well as LEDs.
Fluorescent tube
Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent tubes are filled with glowing
gases and the interior of the glass tube
is coated with fluorescent materials.
Both types function in a similar manner
and require a starter or ballast. (low-loss
ballast – electronic ballast).
In the smaller compact fluorescent tube
a starter and the ballast are typically
integrated.
Energy saving bulbs
Energy saving bulbs are similar in size
to incandescent light bulbs but use
significantly less energy to generate
the same amount of light. However, they
are not dimmable and do not achieve
the same quality of light as halogen or
traditional light bulbs. Usually, compact
fluorescent tubes are described as
energy saving lamps.
Halogen bulbs
The differentiation between halogen bulbs
is in the operating voltage of a normal high
voltage version and the low voltage version
that requires a transformer. In addition there
are halogen light bulbs and metal vapour
lamps. Typical for halogen bulbs is the development of high temperatures, but there is no
other bulb that achieves the outstanding light
qualities of halogen bulbs.
LED / RGB
LED (Light Emitting Diodes) are called
semiconductors. They can vary the
characteristics of their light and achieve
nearly the full spectrum of colour. Unlike
traditional light bulbs, LEDs emit very little
heat, consume little power and have a
much higher life expectancy.

Light in furniture
Light fi
fixtures
A light fixture is the outer shell or housing that holds, operates and protects a light source.
It distributes and directs light and it protects from glare. A light fixture is a creative element.
It can be portable or permanently installed.
Recess mounted lights
Recess mounted lights are space
efficient and easily integrated in places
such as cabinets or suspended
ceilings. They are also suitable for
architectural lighting and lights in
furniture. The variety of applications
therefore is broad.
Down lights
These are lights that are installed
to ceilings or on the underside of
furniture items. The differentiation to
recess mounted lights is that they are
not integrated, but surface mounted.
Surface mounted lights
Surface mounted lights are standalone lights. They can be fastened and
attached to a multitude of components
with no requirement for integration.
They can be equipped to fulfil a multitude of special functions. For example,
they could be swivelling or have an
integrated light switch.
Track lights
Track lights are lights that are ready
to install modules that may include preinstalled light components. With
the track surface mounted, the lights
can be mounted in the desired positions
and connected to a power source.

Parameter for the effects of light
Colour temperature (in Kelvin)
Illuminance (in Lux)
Light distribution
The colour temperature is the measure
for the colour impression of a light source,
measured in Kelvin (K). The standard for
sunny daylight is 5,500 K, in fog approximately 8,000 K and just before sunrise it
is up to 12,000 K. Artificial light imitates
various light situations: The light emitted
by a fluorescent tube achieves a colour
temperature up to 5,000 K, halogen light
to 3,000 K and a candle to 1,500 K.
IIluminance (commonly called light level)
is a term that quantifies light incident on a
surface. It is influenced and reduced by
the distance of the source.
This simplified diagram is intended to act
as an aid for the planner and shows the
light intensities at a distance of 50 cm,
which is applicable to a light in furniture.
It was measured in a black box without
ambient light with a standard lux meter.
Specified is the maximum value in the
centre. The angle can be calculated
based on the loss in light up to half-peak
intensity.

Light in furniture
Light effects
Light effect is the overall effect of reflected light perceived by each individual. The eye optically measures how
light is absorbed or reflected from various different surfaces. Therefore the light significantly influences how
each individual recognizes colours, brightness, distances, contrast and finishes. The respective light effect
always depends on the interaction between the light source and the object as shown in the following examples.
vvv
Mood With the availability of pre-programmed light scenarios it is possible to switch
back and forth between work light (right) and mood light (left).
Contrast Contrast describes the difference between bright and dark areas.
Identical light generates more contrast on brighter surfaces (right) and less on dark surfaces (left).
10
Basic Planning Guidelines
Light in furniture
Emphasis Should stronger light effects be desired, (right),
the general light should be dimmed.
Colour Colours are dependent on the light and influence the overall impression of a room. When selecting colours it is important to
consider the overall lighting plan. The example shows the impact of identical luminosity: A dark floor (left) reflects less light than a lighter
floor (centre). And a colourful floor (right) reflects the colour.
Material Different materials reflect and refract light differently.
The light effects are strongly influenced by these choices.

Light in furniture
Light impressions
Light is an essential element of living for people. Accordingly light is important for our health and
overall well-being. Daylight of course plays the largest role. But in living and work environments
artificial light sources have a significant effect on atmosphere and quality of life. The flexibility of
light in furniture brings important aspects such as security, accentuating, orientation, information
and comfort into centre stage.
Security
A substantial task for light is to convey
security. Dark corner areas evoke fear and
danger in people. Therefore the deployment
of light in furniture, such as drawers, as
added value creates a sense of heightened
security in daily life.
Accentuation
Modern light in furniture provides the
user with the tools to accentuate and
highlight individual rooms and furniture
items to create unique and personal
lighting scenes.
12
Basic Planning Guidelines
Light in furniture
Orientation
In their most basic function as light
sources for all users, young and old,
lights are indispensable orientation
points in a room. By integrating lights
into furniture, additional direction and
purpose can be conveyed throughout
the room – and thereby improving the
pure architectural light.
Information
Light as a carrier of information is an important aspect in the planning of furniture and rooms. Therefore the
illumination of information carriers is as important as the indirect communication and purposeful use of light
and dark areas.
Comfort
Light creates comfort. By using light zones
and individual lighting of specific items in
a room one creates different zones of wellbeing and comfort – a very special and
valuable aspect of daily living.

Light Solutions for Living
A.1 Living room
Light effects
Several aspects determine the
selective use of light in the living
room: Functionality, emotionality
and status. When searching for a
particular book, for example, it is important that the respective areas are
brightly illuminated. When reading
comfortably, a warm reading light is
important. The combination of light
sources that are controlled centrally
and within proximity allows both and
simultaneously upgrades the living
room attractively.
Functional light
Dimmable spotlights in the ceiling provide
flexible room light.
Spotlights effectively draw attention to
special decorative objects.
Comfort light
Individually placed recess mounted lights
simplify the orientation in the bookshelf.
Emotional light

The soft lighting effect of the sideboard
enables a visually pleasant, glare-free view
of the television.
Light on edges of glass shelves: A
harmonious combination, possibly as
the ideal background for creative design.
Plinth lighting improves the perception of
space by visually setting the sideboard
apart from the floor.
The indirect lighting of the shelf structures
the room by a gently increasing light.
Soft light seemingly creates the illusion of
a floating ceiling panel.

A.2 Kitchen
Light in the kitchen: A room for living
Be it an exclusive single kitchen or the cosy “soul of the house”: The kitchen nowadays is a
living area and meeting point for friends and family again. Good lighting for working and
beautiful lighting while dining are the requirements for a lighting concept. Special attention
must be paid here to the materials of the kitchen: Precious wood fronts and other dark, matt
surfaces absorb the light while bright high-gloss fronts reflect it.
Plenty of light on the working area for safe and comfortable work in the kitchen.

A.2 Kitchen
Light effects
Extensively illuminated work areas
are the brightest points of the
kitchen. The ambient lighting
accentuates surfaces in an optimal
way and upgrades corners. Illuminated interior drawers and internal
cabinets offer special comfort. Low
contrast lighting is recommended
for such storage areas.
Functional light
Ideal for the illumination of work areas:
Glare-free light that directly falls onto the
table top without casting a shadow.
Vertical surface directed light illuminates
base units into the farthest corner.
Comfort light
Low-contrast light in cabinets simplifies
searching and locating.
Emotional light
Illuminated drawers guarantee the best
overview even at dark ambient light.
Light behind glass lends transparency and
lightness to wall cabinet fronts.
Plinth lighting provides an elegant night
guiding light.
Bright work surfaces reflect light and are
pleasant for working due to low contrast.
Dark surfaces absorb light and increase
contrast.
Design tip
Underlit shelves transform dishes into
beautiful objects.

A.2 Kitchen
Solution concepts for the kitchen
There are generally two options for the lighting design in kitchens: On the one hand, extensive and neutral appearing fluorescent lights that illuminate work areas in a functional way.
On the other hand, light sources such as halogen spotlights for a warm and continuous light.
LED spotlights offer a modern alternative because they work without generating heat. They
are also distinguished by a long service life. Lights used in kitchens should also be easy to
clean due to the special environmental conditions.

A.3 Bedroom
Light in the bedroom: Retreating and feeling good
Private retreat, oasis of relaxation, preparation for the next day - we do not spend more time in
any other living area than in the bedroom. This is the cosy retreat for reading, watching TV or
chatting. However, clothing is also stored here, maybe even in a walk-in wardrobe, here‘s the
place for dressing and changing clothes. Light plays a crucial role in feeling good in all of this.
A clever combination of direct and indirect light sources clearly upgrades the bedroom.
Back-lit furniture creates glare-free ambient lighting.

A.3 Bedroom
Light effects
Selecting clothes in the morning
in a bright and colour-neutral
light without disturbing a sleeping
partner is made possible by a
walk-in wardrobe with a glare-free
directed, warm light inside. And
the wardrobe lighting spreads soft,
idyllic background lighting during
the evening. Tiny light sources
support the orientation at night.
Functional light
The proper framework for lively conversations: Pleasant, continuously adjustable
down lights create warm light.
The reading light on the bed should be
bright but glare-free and thereby only
illuminate a limited area.
Even someone who is not quite awake
will be able to find the right shirt with the
illuminated wardrobe rail.
The sensor-controlled orientation light automatically provides the necessary light when
getting up without disturbing the partner.
The shelf lighting not only helps in the
search for the proper reading material, it
also disseminates unobtrusive basic light.
Comfort light
Spotlights with their colour-neutral cold
white light let clothes appear as they are.
Emotional light
Design tip
The question “light on or off” is no
longer a topic with modern lighting
technology.
Lights with flexible arms can be
rotated so that they only illuminate
a limited area, such as a book in
any reclining or seating position.
LED lights also emit very little heat.
The contour illumination by concealed
fixtures generates an ideal base light.

Solution concepts for the bedroom
Individual comfort and ambient light is the first choice in the bedroom. Lights placed
in furniture set very personal accents. They can be controlled in accordance with
the situation and thereby increase the ease of use. Fluorescent tubes are the correct
light source for atmospheric backlighting. LED lights provide subtle orientation or
reading light. Halogen light takes over the direct illumination.

great; after all, this is the room where you start and end your day.

Light effects
The area around the wash basin
and mirror calls for a bright, soft
and shadow-free functional light.
Accent lighting through illuminated
edges or back-lit surfaces gives the
bathroom that certain something.
Warm light with flexibly selectable
intensity dominates the wellness
corner with shower and bathtub.
Functional light
Uniform bright light above the mirror is
useful for applying makeup and shaving.
Spotlights mounted under the wall unit
illuminate the wash basin with direct light.
Comfort light
Emotional light
For an atmospheric wellness experience:
Illuminated recesses.
Low voltage technology allows recess
mounted LED strips or back-lit acrylic strips
even in the immediate vicinity of the wash
basin.
Dimmable sidelights give the wall structure.
LED technology that is suitable for wet
areas lets the glass of the partition wall
glow from the inside.
Design tip
Indirect lighting sources conjure up
an impressive atmosphere with warm
light or LED/RGB colour changing
light as an alternative to traditional
standard room lighting - good for the
soul and spirit.
Bright edges transform a practical glass
shelf into an exclusive decorative piece.

Solution concepts for the bathroom
Safety has absolute priority in using electrical appliances in wet areas. Light in the
bathroom was therefore restricted to the technically safe ceiling for a long time. The

now directly to the water.

A.5 Hallway
Light in the hallway: A stylish welcome
Hallway and furniture welcome the visitor. Despite this central importance, the entrance area is
frequently quite neglected in lighting technology. A bright ceiling light in many hallways meets
the desire for functional lighting of the room, while options for an attractive presentation generally
remain unexploited. Intelligent lighting designs counter this with a balanced blend of comfort
and accent lighting.
Functional and comfort light generally contribute to the practical needs of the hallway.
Emotional light transforms the hallway into an attractive ensemble.

Light Solutions for Living
A.5 Hallway
Light effects
For a quick look in the mirror, it
should be brightly illuminated.
The same applies to the key shelf.
Shelves in the cabinets require
soft illumination. The hallway
furniture is shown to an advantage
in a neutral light. The back-lit
hat shelf creates ambience and
counters the effect of dark areas.
Functional light
The extensively illuminated shelf always
guarantees the right access to sunglasses
or keys.
Spotlights above the mirror offer sufficient
brightness for quickly making yourself up.
Comfort light
The illuminated wardrobe rail is not only
practical, but also an attractive design
element.
Emotional light
When suitably illuminated, the shelf in the
sideboard can be used comfortably.
Light also provides an overview and order
inside the furniture.
The back-lit mirror is an eye-catcher and
marks the ambience of the room.
Design tip
Dark walls and floors swallow an extreme
amount of light and thus require a significantly higher light intensity. Using bright
illuminated spaces seemingly creates
the illusion that the room is larger, since
bright surfaces reflect light better and
enhance it.
The illuminated hallway furniture not only
contributes to an intimate atmosphere, but it
also makes narrow hallways appear wider.

B.1 Reception area
Light in the reception area: The business card of the company
The reception area is the business card of a company. Therefore, architects as well as interior designers
endeavour to make the company‘s philosophy already visible at the entrance of the building. The lighting
concept in this context has a particularly high priority. Many planners still focus on working light only, as is
common in offices. However, additional light in furniture and furnishings offers exciting options for architects and interior designers.
The subtle, but stylish way to receive visitors in the proper light.
Light at the reception not only serves for orientation and
guidance, but also as a design tool.

B.2 Corridor / Guidance
Light in the corridor: Attractive area for visitors and employees
Corridors deserve the same design attention as all the other rooms. Because they offer - right
after the reception area - a further attractive option to effectively stage the company. Orientation
light also contains decorative potential. Relaxed accents can be placed on the walls. Properly
planned, the play of light and material transforms every corridor into an attractive area for visitors
and employees.
Pointing visitors in the right direction with a targeted lighting design.
A directly aimed lighting design points the way for the visitor.

Light effects
Uniform light strips created by
interacting up and down lights
provide this long corridor with a
rhythmic pattern - a response
to ordinary room light. On the
opposite wall, the back-lit doorplates and elegantly staged picture
gallery absorb these accents for
better orientation.
Functional light
Additional light strips in suspended ceilings
can increase the effect of the room light.
The doorplates are back-lit for better
legibility.
Comfort light
Recess mounted LEDs at the stairs guide
the visitor and increase surefootedness.
LED technology also enables unusual
applications such as an illuminated
handrail.
Recess mounted spotlights in the suspended ceiling accentuate the long wall area
and provide it with an attractive structure.
Emotional light
Picture lights transform the corridor into a
gallery.

B.3 Meeting and showroom
Light in the meeting and showroom: Two in one
If the meeting room is a showroom at the same time, the light in the furnishings and furniture plays a
major role: While the room light creates workplace conditions, light in the furniture accentuates the
displayed objects and creates the desired ambience - cold or warm, extensive or on the spot. Light
in the room and light in furniture complement each other and therefore result in a convincing overall
impression.
Work-friendly light for lively discussions and high-quality displays.
Light alters the room‘s mood when used in a specific manner, even late in the evening.

Light effects
Spotlighting places individual objects into focus. Surface directed
light creates horizons. A variety of
different ambience moods become
possible in the room, which can also
be changed flexibly depending on
the task and the control technology.
Functional light
Dimmable halogen lights in the ceiling
create the perfect background for displays
with soft light.
Adjustable halogen or LED recess mounted
spotlights are suitable for the point-focused
illumination of the displayed objects.
Filigree conductor rails with tiny LED
spotlights are an ideal lighting system for
elegant display cabinets.
Illuminated recesses create highlights and
guide the gaze of the visitor.
Glare-free light emphasizes the horizontal
of the merchandising display cabinet.
Underlit display areas can be implemented
very effectively and with LED lights that
emit no heat.
Simple LED strips transform the ceiling into
an artificial sky without great effort.
Depending on the desired ambience, cold
and warm lighting can alternate.
Emotional light
The background lighting of the suspended
ceiling can also make the room appear as a
whole even with dimmed lighting.

generates variable room moods that provide the desired ambience even at a late hour.
Impressive and still conducive for work: The lighting design on the executive floor.

The illumination is reserved for the room lighting by day and during work. In the evening,
however, the additional light in furniture and furnishings can fully exhibit its effectiveness and
call forth a completely different, harmonious room impression. Any desired atmosphere can
be created with an intelligent light control system. Various light sources are used for this: LED

cabinet lighting and for more spatial perception, dimmable halogen spotlights.

Light in the salesroom: The perfect accentuation
A successful lighting concept primarily provides a store with one thing: It inspires making
a purchase. Light encourages by accentuating merchandise and customers in a stylish
way and aimed at target groups. The general light level in small speciality stores is therefore more dimmed than in large salesrooms. The high quality product range of a jeweller
sets unique requirements of the lighting technology for a special set of circumstances.
Light in merchandising display counters and furniture supports the lighting concept and provides the perfect accentuation of the products.
Dimmable halogen lights place highlights

Light effects
Accent lighting in the salesroom
systematically directs the customer‘s eye to the product range.
Racks, merchandising display
cabinets, shelves and displays
therefore enjoy top priority in
lighting design. The impression
of the room can be specifically
influenced by the light colour:
Warm white light creates a cosy
atmosphere. Neutral white light
accentuates a more objective
atmosphere.
Functional light
As a supplement to room light, small halogen
spotlights help to highlight important information.
LED microspots are extremely suitable for
focused and narrow-beam lighting.
Dimmable halogen lights are the fifirst choice
for a store due to their warm and brilliant light.
Emotional light
Flexible conductor light rail systems on
LED basis are suitable for many lighting
applications.
Centre display counter can be accentuated
with LED strips in addition to ceiling lighting.
Heavy display furniture appears to float

Solution concepts for the salesroom
Focused and warm light best supports the accentuation of high quality unique items.
Dimmable halogen lights combine both, and are therefore frequently used in jewellery stores.
Modern LED lights meanwhile are superior to halogen technology in reference to service life
and heat emission. The use of fibre-optics lighting that emits no heat is recommended for
particularly sensitive displays.

C.2 Cash desk area
Light in the cash desk area: Conspicuous and discreet
The cash desk is the focal point of a store: Here, each purchase comes to its successful
conclusion. It is therefore essential that each customer can find it quickly and easily.
At the same time, the lighting concept in the cash desk area must convey discretion and
security. And last but not least, the staff at the cash register must check money, merchandise
and forms. DIN EN 12464-1 therefore stipulates an illuminance level of at least 500 lux.
The cash desk area as workplace, display area and information point.
Especially in general atmospheric light, it is necessary to design the workplace area as
functionally and comfortable as possible with additional lighting.

Light effects
A perfectly illuminated cash desk
area confirms the customer‘s
buying decision. It is clearly
marked and conveys security
and discretion. At the same time,
the lighting concept supports
the staff with the best functional
light that also illuminates the cash
register screen and keypad brightly
and glare-free.
Functional light
LED spotlights illuminate selected areas,
without disturbing the overall impression.
Light in drawers and compartments enables
an optimal overview and quick access.
A free-standing consulting area requires
good lighting for displayed merchandise.
Comfort light
Sidelights highlight the structure of the wall,
and set lighting accents.
Lateral light in merchandising display
counters must be glare-free.
The light elegantly points out the practical
bag shelf.
Emotional light
The solid cabinet of the cash desk appears

Solution concepts for the cash desk area
Back-lit wall panels give the area volume and create unobtrusive basic lighting
through reflection. Recess mounted spotlights with a narrow radiation angle are
integrated into the suspended ceiling. They fulfil two tasks: On the one hand
they illuminate the display behind the cash desk. On the other hand, they serve
as a work light.

C.3 Display window area
Light in the display window area: Attractive advertisement
The lighting concept of a display window develops its potential especially when daylight fades.
Fashion houses thereby emphasize the shape and colour of their displays in bright light. A jeweller
on the other hand, focuses on detail. Closely focused spotlights set highlights. The material of a
valuable leather case is shown to its advantage in the cool lighting.
Good display windows with integrated display cabinet lights also sell during night time strolls through town.
Attention through variety: Glass surfaces aesthetically
change colour with LED/RGB lights with reversing colour
sequence.
60
A flexible alternative to down lights: Merchandising display
cabinets can be relocated easily with integrated conductor rails.

C.3 Display window area
Light effects
Be noticed, stand out from competitors by day and by night: Light in
the display window acts in a very
special manner. The light accentuation highlights the value of the
merchandise, sets priorities and
tells stories by creating attractive
contexts between the displayed
items. Precious stones sparkle and
arouse desires when set in the right
light.
Functional light
Sidelights accentuate the emerging texture
and material of the wall.
Halogen light lets jewels shimmer even
more brilliant.
Illuminated appropriately, a unique
presentation is even more effective.
Invisible LED lights recess mounted in
shelves make all details visible.
Conductor rails allow a flexible alignment of
the light sources in the glass display cabinet.
Small LED lights are sufficient to highlight
the company name at night in style.
Emotional light
Displays illuminated from below appear
more dramatic. The challenge here is the
use of glare-free LED lights.

C.3 Display window area
Solution concepts for the display window area
In direct competition with daylight, the lighting concept can ensure a potentially uniform and shadow-free
illumination of the display window at best. However, the possibilities for accentuating are limited. Quite
different at night or even in shopping arcades: Accents can be set here with direct halogen or strong LED
lights. Back-lit acrylic glass and LED / RGB colour changing lights create surprising effects. Automatic
switching between the day and night mode can be accomplished by a twilight sensor or a timer.

Light in the boutique: Perfect kaleidoscope of colours
The selection of the right lighting can contribute to retail sales. Lighting can establish a store‘s image
and lead customers inside, focus their attention, make the products attractive and visible, with the end
result encourage a sale. Other than at a jeweller‘s, colours and surfaces in a fashion boutique should
appear as natural as possible. The merchandise is therefore illuminated directly with cool and true
colour light. Accent lighting limited to walls and recesses creates emotion.
Light in furniture sets the tone at the right place.
The inversion of contrasts with a dark background highlights the
materials of the displayed products, a bright background highlights their contour.
64
Natural backgrounds, such as wood, make the product appear
more authentic. The LED points in the glass edge provide
additional effects.

Solution concepts for the boutique
The most natural colour presentation possible is essential in a fashion boutique.
Room lighting, which illuminates similar to daylight, is therefore a priority in
the lighting design. However, light-dark variability is of secondary importance.
Where the room light casts shadows, such as in recesses and merchandise
display cabinets, light sources designed for furniture are used as supplement.

D.1 Reception desk
Light at the hotel reception desk: Communication and orientation
The first impression is important. The reception desk and lobby are therefore the business card of a
hotel. The reception area is a place of arrival, communication and information as a central starting point
for guests. The lighting concept emphasizes a pleasant atmosphere. It simplifies the orientation. And it
supports additional functions, such as the presentation of informational materials. Good glare-free lighting
will visually set the reception desk area apart from its immediate surroundings.
There is no second chance for the first impression: The design of the reception area establishes the quality, value and comfort.
Halogen lights over the display shelving on the back of the reception desk can be selectively controlled.
The result is interesting lighting effects for creating any desired ambience.

Solution concepts for the reception desk
Significance and perception of the reception desk are essentially determined by
the intense use of light in furniture. Recess mounted fluorescent lights are used
at the display shelving for brochures. The reception desk is effectively presented
by the LED gap lighting. The recess mounted LED lights and plinth lights operate
without any additional heat generation. The direct ceiling lighting with fluorescent

D.2 Guest room
The hotel room: A temporary home
Every guest is different – the hotelier must face this challenge as much as the planner. To ensure that all
guests are equally comfortable in their temporary home, the room should be able to optimally adjust to the
different needs. Since restrictions are placed on the fl exibility of the furnishings, the lighting concept plays
a central role: Relaxing in dimmed lighting in the chair or provide the final touches to a lecture at the brightly
illuminated desk – a suitable lighting control system allows both.
The guest has the choice which lighting situation fits his mood.
Emotional light enhances the “feel-good factor” of the room.

Light effects
Functional light is required in the
entrance area or in the wardrobe.
Concentrated reading requires
direct light with even illumination.
Gentle background lighting of the
wall is ideal for working on the laptop. Continuously adjustable light
accompanies the cosy television
evening. On the other hand, direct
reading lights increase comfort in
bed. Night lights help the eye to
slowly acclimatise to the brightness
and subtly facilitate the orientation.
Functional light
Individually controlled and continuously
adjustable halogen lights for the bed.
Recess mounted spots in the suspended
ceiling set special accents in narrow
entrance areas.
Wide-angle halogen spotlights illuminate
the work area evenly.
The towels are presented clearly arranged
by practical shelf lighting with a true colour
reflection.
Ambience light enhances corners and
creates the ideal background lighting for
working on the laptop.
Pleasant atmosphere for lively discussions
in bed.
Practical elegance: Illuminated shelves.
Comfort light
Not only practical but also attractive: The
illuminated wardrobe rail.
Emotional light

Solution concepts for the hotel room
Energy-saving lights and fluorescent lights create a cool basic light and therefore
guarantee optimal basic lighting. Dimmable halogen lights are used at the desk
and bedside. Warm white LED spotlights are a modern alternative here. Indirect
light sources such as back-lit surfaces or spotlights aimed at the ceiling create a
pleasant ambience.

D.3 Bar / Lounge
Light in bar and lounge: Relaxation in style
Whether it‘s a classic hotel bar or modern lounge – each target group has its preferences.
The lighting concept responds. In a classic bar that means: Stylish relaxation without
technical wizardry. The light accentuation lets the guest enjoy his drink in reduced,
glare-free lighting. Similarly functional and aesthetically lit, the work area behind the bar
integrates itself into the concept.
Individual lighting for every mood: For example, in the early evening...
... or for the night cap at the bar.

Light effects
The guests are the focus of the
lighting concept and are thus the
emotional factors of the light effects.
At the same time, optimum optical
conditions must be available for the
staff: The light level, glare limitation
and colour reflection must therefore
also be considered in the lighting
design.
Functional light
Orientation light in the floor increases safety
in dark basic lighting.
Small adjustable LED spotlights illuminate
selective work areas behind the edge of the
bar.
Comfort light
Emotional light
Illuminated glass shelves aesthetically upgrade the bar and emphasize the horizontal
ambiance of the wall.
Back-lit acrylic glass distributes discrete
basic lighting in the bar area.
Recesses effectively generate spatial
depth at minimum illuminance.
Display cabinets selectively accentuated
with LED lights offer variety to the eye.
Direct ceiling spotlight and contour
providing underlighting effectively
complement each other.
Colour changing LED / RGB light offers
many options to alter the mood.

D.4 Wellness area
Light in the wellness area: Enjoy with all senses
A high-quality wellness area differentiates an excellent hotel from a good one. The hotel
stay becomes an experience for the guest here. The design of the lighting contributes
significantly to economic use of light with a special effect. Direct light sources illuminate
tiled surfaces with brilliance. Calm, gentle light creates a relaxing atmosphere. Direct
light is completely absent. Economical light from multiple light sources characterizes this
lighting concept.
An intelligent light concept can be flexibly adjusted to any mood - and space and time can be forgotten.
Dimmable light sources as sidelights change the aura in

Light effects
Feel good, find peace, do
something for yourself – the
lighting design supports the
room concept that is oriented
toward relaxation in the wellness
area. Specific use of light
sources guarantee that the
guest is well oriented and can
adjust the light conditions to his
needs.
Functional light
Discreet reading light on the lounger:
Optimum lighting without disturbing the
neighbour.
Spatial depth effect and new horizons are
created by back-lit ceiling panels.
The wash basin quickly found: The glarefree and dimmed lighting shows the guest
the way.
Unconventional use of light sources:
Reflection creates a warm atmosphere.
Orientation light helps in preventing
accidents in dark rooms.
Comfort light
Illuminated shelves are not only practical
but also visually a delight.
Emotional light
Design tip
If the impression of individual
points of light should be avoided,
when using LED illuminated glass
shelves, satin-finished edges are
recommended: They merge the
individual light sources into a single
optically uniform luminous strip.
Cosy or even mysterious? In any case, this
down light works glare-free.

Solution concepts for the wellness area
A relaxing evening atmosphere is the goal of this lighting solution: Coloured lights
and programmed colour settings with LED / RGB colour changing lights determine
the ambience. “Luminous walls” convey the illusion of large natural light areas in
the relax room, so-called “artificial windows”. The practical reading lights on the
recliner visually inconspicuously adapt.

D.5 Rest room
Light in the rest room: More than functional
The lighting in generally accessible rest rooms of a hotel should above all be functional.
The guest can therefore be easily oriented. The cleanliness of the facility is also emphasized
by the bright light. A mild, direct light, which lets the user appear clearly, but not too pale,
is part of the mirror. Lighting concepts with harmonious elements increasingly assert themselves in that area.
Functional and still emotional: The lighting concept should communicate hygiene, quality, value and discretion.
A special kaleidoscope of colours: The wash basin changes
colour using LED / RGB background lighting.
84
Freely programmable, the colour can be adjusted to match e.g. the
time of day, season, etc.

D.5 Rest room
Light effects
Cleanliness, orientation and a
protected atmosphere wait for
the user in the rest room area.
Functional aspects are therefore in
the foreground in lighting design.
However, the lighting of the toilet
facilities can also show the creativity
of the host: By the complete
absence of direct light, for example.
Functional light
Illuminated corners remove the room‘s
architectural severity.
Indirect fluorescent light structures the wall
and softly illuminates the wash basin.
Comfort light
Emotional light
LED strips are an excellent design element
and break up large areas by emphasizing
the vertical.
The back-lit wall toilet scores with a surprise effect.
Illuminated edges put elegant accents in
sanitary rooms.
Decorative objects also have an effect
thanks to the combination of direct and
indirect light.

D.5 Rest room
Solution concepts for the rest room
Especially in wet areas, but also in all other areas of the building, the corresponding
installation regulations and standards must be met. DIN VDE 0100 Part 701 regulates
the requirements and defines four room zones with different security demands. Electrical
appliances and lights must have an adequate degree of protection (IP identification).
Creative lighting design, such as an illuminated glass wash basin, or back-lit toilets
with LED give the hotel‘s rest room a new dimension.

E.1 Reception desk
Light in the foyer and at the reception desk: Welcome
The entrance area welcomes residents and visitors of a retirement home: It conveys a cosy and
comfortable atmosphere at first glance. At the same time, it offers guidance and shows the way
to the other areas of the building. The reception area with reception desk is also a focal point.
Appropriate lighting and signs reflect these requirements. Different lighting conditions in front
and behind the door should be compensated for.
The challenge in lighting design in the reception area is the harmonious
interaction of the atmosphere, room lighting, guidance and orientation.
Regardless of the lighting concept, the reception desk must function as a work area and have sufficient illumination.

Light effects
The lighting supports the exchange of
information at the reception desk.
Balanced lighting conditions via
appropriate proportions of vertical
illuminance guarantee that the participants in a conversation can see each
other well without being blinded.
Additional lighting accents in the
vertical make the reception area an
attractive and representative centre
of attraction.
Functional light
Comfort light
Spotlights in a suspended ceiling ideally
complement the room lighting by subtly
illuminating the work area.
The mailbox and keyboard are clearly
presented with bright recess lighting.
Down lights are not only a design element:
They simplify the orientation for the seniors
and provide security.
Emotional light
Overview into the furthest corner: Interior
illuminated drawers and cabinet compartments make it possible.
Uplights in the rear panel give the room a
bright and friendly atmosphere.
Older people are moving more safely in
bright rooms. Compact wall lights create
the conditions for it.
Small picture lights set points and fully
accentuate pictures.

Solution concepts for the foyer and reception area
A cylindrical illuminance from 400 to 500 lx at eye level (line of vision) is logical as a basic light in
the entrance and reception area. This corresponds to a horizontal illuminance of 200 to 300 lx on
the ground. Glare should be avoided. Another objective of the lighting concept is a clear colour
scheme, such as through the use of appropriate coloured light bulbs. If directions are defined by
the floor covering, it is supported by the lighting. It would be logical to also integrate appropriately
coordinated signs and seating options in the lighting design.

Generally, the room lighting in the retirement homes should be surface directed to avoid irritating reflections.
Spotlights and side lights are only suitable for accent lighting and accentuating specific elements.

E.2 Community room
Light in the community room: Active experience at any time
Gymnastics in the morning, a chat over a coffee in the afternoon and a little concert in the evening:
The community room is used for various purposes and must be multifunctional. The lighting concept
provides suitable lighting for each use and for each desired ambience: Bright and transparent for an
active experience, soft light with warm light colours for a cosy gathering in the evening. The community
room is the most important place for communication and movement for many residents.
The accent lighting on the side opposite from daylight creates a congenial atmosphere.
Ambient lighting for lively conversations in the evening helps the dimmed room lighting and brightens dark corners.

Light effects
The focus of the lighting design is
the illumination of the tables. Service
areas, however, will be illuminated
with soft glowing lights. Exceptions
are the buffet, the counter and the
cash registers in self-service restaurants. A sufficient lighting level at a
harmonious brightness distribution
is required, so that people who are
limited in their perceptive faculties
can also see well. Glare – perhaps
caused through the reflection on
shiny surfaces – must be avoided.
Functional light
Many small light sources create more
atmosphere than even room lighting.
Down lights provide structure to the wall and
emphasize its colour through reflection.
Comfort light
Finding the right thing easily and quickly:
Through light in the wall unit.
Dishes can also be grasped safely by older
people when well illuminated.
The effect of the vivid flames should not be
disturbed by artificial light at the fireplace.
Emotional light
Light in the drawer creates more space,
because the rear half can be comfortably
used.

E.2 Community room
Solution concepts for the community room
When planning the lighting design, the visual capacity and comfort needs of the elderly must be considered.
The interior cabinet lighting used has integrated sensor switches that safely and easily switch the light on and off
when opening the drawer or the cabinet. LED lights are the ideal lighting for furniture due to their long service
life at a low heat generation. Neutral coloured to cold white light is recommended here. Warm LED or halogen is
suitable for the decorative area. Fluorescent tubes are used when the pure functionality of an even illumination is
desired.

E.3 Apartments / Residences
Light in living areas and apartment: Living like in hotels
Anyone that decides to move into a retirement home, consciously selects a comfortable life in a reduced
living space. The bathroom aside, this usually consists of one room, which combines all of the functions:
Hallway, living room and bedroom, kitchen and dining room. A good lighting design meets all of these
requirements. As in a modern hotel, the living areas of a retirement home include the needs of the residents
as well as those of the room staff.
There are many dark areas, even in bright daylight. Illuminated by light in the furniture, they are still easy to use.
Illuminated and back-lit surfaces support the lighting of the room and upgrade the room.

Light effects
Lighting suitable for senior living
considers the specific vision of the residents: On the one hand, the illuminance
required increases in age, but at the
same time, the glare sensitivity increases
as well. Narrowly focused, directed
light is therefore less suitable. Rather, in
principle, higher illuminance levels and
much indirect lighting are basically the
most important specifications for living
areas in a retirement home. In addition,
the proper lighting for seniors is crucial
in contributing to the well-being and
greater safety in the orientation.
Functional light
Light in drawers does not only have comfort
value in a retirement home.
Shelf light and illuminated wardrobe rails
facilitate the orientation in the closet.
Comfort light
Light behind cabinet doors visually make it
easier to see and retrieve items.
Emotional light
Illuminated glass shelves and back-lit sideboards create an intimate atmosphere in a
darkened room.
Avoiding dark corners is especially important in retirement homes.
Cherished pieces shine even more
effectively thanks to a small spotlight.
Desgin tip
Current-carrying skirting is an elegant
solution and enables the power supply
through flexible sockets, and can also
be retrofitted.
Light in furniture turns a glass display
cabinet into a treasure box.

Solution concepts for the living area and apartment
The interplay of light in the room and light in furniture provides every user group with individual design
options. Indirect lighting and direct lighting are available for the realization of different scenarios. LED
lighting provides bright, natural light. It does not fatigue the eyes and generates little heat. TV and mood
lighting have to be controlled easily and without any great technical knowledge even by older people.
A simple dimmer or — even more comfortable — a remote control are suitable here.

Light in the bedroom: Discreet orientation aid
If the need for care increases, the bedroom fulfils additional functions. Well-being in
familiar surroundings in spite of reduced freedom of movement is the requirement.
The dimmed night light is a perfect orientation aid in the darkness especially for older
and dependent people. It also offers a pleasant background for watching television.
Seniors should have a choice to determine which light is most pleasant. This increases comfort and well-being.

Light effects
A cosy atmosphere and an excellent
working light – retirement homes
need both at the same place and
often at the same time. In order to
effectively help and heal, doctors
and nurses must be able to see
well. Dimmable room lighting or
flexibly adjustable reading lights
meet the demands of the staff as
well as the emotional needs of the
resident. An average illuminance
on the longitudinal axis of the laying
surface of 300 lux at a height of
85 cm is recommended here.
Functional light
Comfort light
Surface directed recess mounted light in the
head section of the bed brings a pleasantly
warm light during the time before falling
asleep.
The LED reading light can be pivoted and
individually controlled.
The illuminated clothes rail eases the
selection of the wardrobe even with
impaired vision.
Recess mounted lights under the bed point
the way without bothering others in the room.
A concentrated reading light and a wellilluminated view into the drawer are not
ruled out with light in furniture.
Indirect lighting under the nightstand
provides a comfortable orientation.
Emotional light
Dimmable uplights provide soft basic
brightness in the bedroom.

A simple operation of the lighting guarantees that residents can also use their lighting
concept dynamically and flexibly. Large push button switches with a unique marking

E.5 Bathroom
Light in the bathroom: Looking good every day
Feeling good and looking good is not a question of age. But if the eyes become somewhat weaker, they can be
supported by an appropriate lighting design: Relinquishing bright light sources prevents unwanted reflections
on shiny surfaces. Good general lighting provides orientation in the room as well as security. For example, wet
and slippery surfaces become visible and therefore accidents can be prevented. The mirror light produces
optimally bright light for brushing teeth, shaving or applying makeup.
A good mix of cold and warm light sources meets all the demands for function and comfort.

E.5 Bathroom
Light effects
Glare-free lighting (200 to 300 lux
on the floor) also secure the
necessary orientation during
the nightly walk to the bathroom.
A clear identification of potentially
slippery areas increases safety
especially for older and visually
impaired people. Therefore glarefree lighting (300 to 400 lux on the
floor) and colour neutral lights are
recommended for these areas.
Functional light
Dimmable halogen spotlights are suitable
for wet areas and provide safety.
The direct mirror lighting brings much
neutral light to the morning rituals in the
bathroom.
Comfort light
Additional protection against accidents:
The illumination of the glass edges in the
shower.
Emotional light
Back-lit walls are an attractive and visually
pleasing alternative for blinding direct light.
Indirect light from the suspended ceiling
provides basic lighting and gives the room
contour.
Ease of use and harmonious atmosphere in
one: An LED strip in the wash basin.
The edge lighting in the wall cabinet sets an
additional visual accent.

Light Solutions for Retirement Homes
E.5 Bathroom
Solution concepts in the bathroom
Indirect light sources embedded in wall niches or shelves emphasize the architectural space, furnishings or
accessories. The soft radiant light of dimmable recess mounted halogen down lights is recommended for lighting
in the shower or for reading in the bathtub. The eyes of elderly people adapt to differences in brightness more
slowly, which makes the orientation during the nightly walk to the bathroom more difficult, for example. The night
lighting of the bathroom is designed so bright that it guarantees safety without straining the eyes. Light fixtures
with a warm white colour and excellent colour reflection are recommended for lighting on the mirror.

Generally, the functional light in the bathroom is cold white and surface directed.
Dimmable halogen lights, however, illuminate the room full of atmosphere.
