Winemaker’s Page
Welcome to Tami’s Corner
Q: Dennis has already indicated that the 2011 vintage is difficult. What have
you done different this year vs. in the years past to maintain your high wine
quality standards?
Tami: I’ve had to pull from a few different bags of winemakers tricks to counterbalance what Mother Nature threw at us. In addition, as we get closer to
bottling the ‘11’s, I will likely maximize my options for blending the wines
that weathered a few extra rainstorms with those that did not.
Q: Do you feel that being a young, attractive woman that you receive the
same respect in the industry that the old, fat, bald guys do?
Tami: There are more young, attractive women winemakers than most people
realize…although just 10% of California’s 3,200+ wineries have women winemakers. How many of us are “young and attractive” is yet TBD.
Q: Your barrel room is extremely small for the amount of wines you produce.
What is your biggest challenge with the given amount of space you have to
work with?
Tami: Access to every barrel is rather challenging since I’m the only one who
can fit between the barrels! Thankfully we have an electric pallet jack to move
the barrel stacks around when I’m the only one in the cellar. One of these days
I will measure my width and calculate the optimal barrel stacking pattern so
as to minimize the bumps and bruises I get when topping and collecting barrel
samples.
Q: If you could make one improvement to the winery, what would it be?
Tami: Definitely more tanks and some secret elves to come at night to top off
what the wine gods have taken.
Q: Of all the wines you make, which three are your favorites to bring home
and drink with your family and friends?
Tami: Felta Primitivo, Christine’s Pinot Noir and Tempranillo.
Q: Your husband, Jeff, is General Manager for one of the largest wineries in
Sonoma County. Does he give you support, help or insight? Do you guys “talk
wine” at home?
Tami: Support: yes. Help: no. Insight: generally not applicable. I’ve got 180
barrels in the cellar; he has 12,000. I’ve got 3,820 gallons of total stainless steel
tank capacity; he has 8 million! His winery crushes our entire harvest in 2
truckloads, which takes them about 40 minutes. As for talking wine at home,
generally “hell no!”
Q: What are your favorite shoes to wear in the winery?
Tami: My steel-toed rubber Blundstone’s, acquired during my time spent as
cellar rat at Leasingham Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia. Although,
here at DLM I think I’d be better off with some rock-climbing shoes for all the
barrel climbing I have to do.
Q: Do you lose weight during harvest?
Tami: Wouldn’t that be fabulous!
Q: What do you consider to be the “hidden jewels” and your top three favorites of the library wines?
Tami: This is a loaded question by Dennis since 2006 was my first harvest at
DLM. So, how about the Tres Amour (’04 and ’06), Tina’s Pinot Noir (’04 and
’05), and the Red Grav cabernets (’03, ’04 and ’05).
