Learning about HOME

he Foshay Flash attended a screening of the movie,
T
HOME, with eight other PressFriends programs at
Twentieth Century Fox studios. We interviewed the
producer of the movie, HOME, Suzanne Buirgy, to find
out more about the movie.
Foshay Flash: How long did it take to make the movie, HOME?
Buirgy: It took seven years from the time the director, Tim Johnson, read the book to release.
Foshay Flash: How did Tim Johnson get the idea to
make the movie?
Buirgy: Tim read the book, The True Meaning of
Smekday [by Adam Rex], to his boys one night and then
finished reading after they went to bed. He suggested
that the studio purchase the option to the book.

oshay held its third anF
nual 5K on May 9. When
it was about to start, my
mom told me and my
brother to start slowly but
we didn’t listen, so we got
tired fast.
We were running from
Foshay to Figueroa. I remember that I saw a shoebox and thought that
someone might have
changed their shoes.
At Figueroa, the runners were given wristbands to confirm that they
made it to Figueroa. The
runners also received water.
Alondra Juarez won
first place for Elementary.
There was also a kids’
dash. Two second graders
were among the top three
runners.
The Foshay 5K was a
bomb this year. If you have
never entered the 5K, then
you should think about entering the 5K next year.

Finding Out About HOME

OME is an animated

movie about an alien race called Boov,
who take over Earth
when their own planet
is destroyed by their
enemies, the Gorgs.
The main Boov character is Oh, voiced by Jim
Parsons, who meets a
human girl, Tip, voiced
by Rihanna.
The Foshay Flash
wanted to find out
more about the story,
and asked the producer, Suzanne Buirgy.

does Oh turn green
when he is lying?
Buirgy: He feels guilty.
Foshay Flash: Why is
the cat named Pig?
Buirgy: That was the
cat's name in the book
[True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex]. He
designed him so he had
a curly tail like a pig.

the movie named Home?
Buirgy: We wanted a
title that every country
would understand.
Home is a place everyone wants. A place
where we feel safe with
people we love.
Foshay Flash: Why are
the Boov called the
Boov?
Buirgy: That was the
name of the alien species in the book
Foshay Flash: Why was
Tip’s dad not in the
movie?
Buirgy: We wanted
both Tip and mom to be
left alone so that the
moment of the reunion
was as emotional as
possible.
Foshay Flash: Why didn’t the movie show
when Oh made the
Slushies?
Buirgy: We tried to put
that in the movie, but
we had to cut the idea
because it was more
important for us to get
Tip and Oh on the road
so we could start to explore their relationship.
Foshay Flash: Why didn’t the other Boov like
Oh?
Buirgy: He was different from them and they
didn't understand him.
Foshay Flash: How long
did it take to make the
characters?
Buirgy: It took about 2
years to work through
the character design
process and modeling
the characters took anywhere between 4 to 8
weeks each, not including Tip's hair and clothing.

HOME is where the Heart is

OME is a good movH
ie for kids that like
funny and sad movies
that teach lessons
about caring about people.
The main characters
are a girl named Tip,
her cat Pig, and an alien from the Boov race
called Oh.
I like the movie because Tip and Oh develop a special bond
together, and Tip
teaches Oh about
friendship.
The problem in the
movie was that the
captain of the Boov
took something from
another alien race, the
Gorgs. The Boov escape
to Earth and decide to
take over Earth for
themselves. They put
all of the humans—
except for Tip—
somewhere far away,
and Tip and Oh go on an
adventure to search for
Tip’s mother while Oh
tries to save the Boov
race from the Gorgs.
This movie has comedy, suspense, and is
good for all ages. 

Buirgy: We go through
an intensive casting process, but Tim always felt
Jim Parsons was the actor he wanted to voice
Oh.

knew what we needed
to be happy.

out more about the story of HOME.
Foshay Flash: Why
does Oh turn different
colors when he has different emotions?
Buirgy: Each color represents a different
emotion. We wanted to
show that Oh was a
Boov who experienced a
bigger range of emotion
than other Boov who
only felt afraid, mad,
and sometimes slightly
pleased.
Foshay Flash: Why does
Kyle not want to be Oh’s
friend?
Buirgy: Because he
doesn't understand him
and the Boov do not value friendship.
Foshay Flash: Why does
everybody want to be
Oh’s friend at the end of
the movie?
Buirgy: Because Oh
saved them from the
Gorg and they start to
understand that there
may be some value in
running towards the
danger rather than running away all the time.
Foshay Flash: Why was
the invitation [to the
Gorgs] not stopped?
Buirgy: No one knows
why the other aliens still
got Oh's invitation but
the Gorg did not come
to earth because of the
invitation, he came because he was tracking
the rock.
Foshay Flash: Why didn’t the Gorgs come in
their real version?
Buirgy: Because they
wanted all the other
aliens to think they were
bigger and badder than
they were.
Coming in their real
form would make them
appear vulnerable and,
just like in nature, that
means you might look
weak to another species.
HOME hits a Home Run

n the movie HOME
Icalled
there were aliens
the Boov. The
Boov were funny and
the best part of the
movie was the interrupting cow joke.
In the movie, the
Boov took over Earth
as their home planet.
All of the humans were
taken away except for
a girl named Tip.
A Boov named Oh
found Tip and her cat
named Pig. Their mission was to find Tip’s
mom and stop a message from being send
to the Boov’s enemies,
the Gorgs.

The problem was
that they did not know
the password to stop the
message from reaching
the Gorgs, and revealing
their hiding place on
Earth.
When they found the
password, they tried to
erase Oh because the
head of the Boov, Captain Smek, said that if
there are any mistakes,
than you are out.
They escaped Paris
and went to Australia to
find Tip’s mom. They
did not find Tip’s mom
for a while because Oh
left home. Oh was still
in trouble and told the
Captain Smek that he
was a bad leader.
Captain Smek was
going to hit him but
Oh’s friend, Kyle, helps
him. Kyle then became
the captain. Oh went
back to help Tip find her
mom. They found her!
The Boov became
friends with the humans.
I recommend this
movie to my friends.
You’ll hear Rihanna as
Tip, Jim Parsons as Oh,
Jennifer Lopez as Tip’s
mom, and Steve Martin
as Captain Smek. The
movie is rated PG and
everyone will like it.

HOME is a good movie because it is sad and
funny, and I love it. It
is one of the best movies ever.
In the movie, there
was a girl named Tip
who was sad because the
Boov took all the humans,
and she didn’t know
where her mom was.
Tip also had a cat
named Pig. Tip saw an
alien named Oh and
they became friends.
Oh said that he would
help Tip find her mom.
Tip and Oh looked all
day for her mom and
stopped in Paris but she
was not there. They got
in the car and went to
go look for her and finally found her.
The evil Gorg species
came to Earth to look
for the Boov, and Oh
told Tip to stay in the
car. Oh told him to stop
but the Gorg did not.
Then Tip told him to
stop and he stopped.
Oh almost got killed
and it was sad, but
then it was happy at
the end.
HOME is rated PG
and it is a good movie
to watch for kids in the
third, fourth, and fifth
grades.

car. Oh makes different changes to the car
to make it float.
Oh sends a message for his party but
he sends it to everyone in the galaxy, and
now the enemy called
the Gorgs knows
where they are.
Oh and Tip take
her flying car on an
adventure to find
Tip’s mom. Oh hides
from the Boov because they try to
erase Oh since his
message gave away
their location. In the
end, Oh inserts the
password for the message so that it won’t
be sent.

games. When they
couldn’t find Tip’s
mom, Oh decided that
he had to leave. Tip
stayed and continued
looking for her mother in Australia. Oh
came back because he
noticed that the girl
couldn’t find her. I
recommend this movie to people who likes
adventure movies and
emotional movies.

School.

Elizabeth Gillies as Jade
West on Victorious. She
started acting in the TV
show called The Black
Donnellys, playing young
Jenny. She appeared in
an episode of the TV
show The Battery Down,
and is the voice of Daphne in the animated series, Winx Club. She
also has appeared in
other television shows,
including, Big Time
Rush, White Collar, the
Exes, and Sam and Cat.
Gillies was in a musical called “13” on
Broadway with Ariana
Grande, who played
Charlotte, and she
played the role Lucy.
She has appeared in the
movie, The Clique, and
Harold.
Gillies continues to
sing and work on her
music. 

He started singing in
2008 and was the opening act for Taylor Swift
in 2012.
Sheeran’s latest album is “x” His genre is
Pop, Folk, Hip Hop, and

Every Witch Way

ave you ever wanted

to be a witch? Well
one witch named Emma
was the chosen one.
She didn’t know she
was a witch, but when
she was unpacking her
boxes, she made a hairbrush float. Emma
thought it was a trick
someone was playing on
her, but it wasn’t.
When Emma was getting the other boxes, she
sees her crush, Daniel
who lives next door. She
also meets Andi, who
helps her with the boxes
and becomes one of her
friends. Andi helped her
unpack. Emma showed
her room to Andi and
her books where floating
in the air. They both got
scared, but when Emma
put her hand down, and
the books fell down on
the floor.
Emma put her hand
up and then the books
floated upwards again.
Andy asked Emma why
her books were floating
and Emma said she didn’t know. But then Andi
got a call from her mom
so she left, then Emma
told her to keep it a secret.
Then there was a
school dance and Emma
wanted to go. Emma
found out she was a with
so she had a guardian
who was the school
nurse. So she started
training for a battle with
the principal who is very
powerful witch, but the
night of the battle was

happy, and you can keep
them happy by feeding
them and playing with
them.
Dogs live to about the
age of 12-15 in people
years. Dogs can make
you feel better too;
which is why they sometimes are brought to
retirement homes and
hospitals. Dogs are also
used by police to detect
drugs and other illegal
items. 

The Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie
aired in 2009 and there
also was a movie in 2013
called The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex.
The show is about a
sister and two brothers
who are wizards, but
only one of them can
remain a wizard when
they get older. The sister Alex is played by
Selena Gomez. Her character is always in trouble. Her older brother is
Justin, and he was
played by David Henrie.
The younger brother,
Max, is played by Jake
T. Austin.
The last episode of
the Wizards of Waverly
Place was called “Who
Will Be the Family Wizard,” and you will have
to watch it on the internet to find out! 
An episode I like is
the one were Finn the
human he gets a sword
that is a leaf and does
not come off until another episode when it
gets cut off.
In another episode,
the ice king writes another world that is the
same as the world that
ice king is in but the
genders are changed. In
that episode the ice
king is reading the
book to Jake the dog.
One thing I learned
is that when I was
watching, is that it
might be for adults. In
one episode they are
drinking out of red
cups and it had a sorority sign.
If you are on Cartoon Network, you
should look up Adventure Time.

ressFriends was formed in 2008 by kids for kids, and today is still an all-volunteer organization run
by students. We have afterschool newspaper clubs in eight Title I elementary schools, two Boys &
Girls clubs, and two community centers. We also hold weekend workshops at the Lawndale Library and
at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. We publish newspapers for each of our programs, and since 2008, we
have published over 90 newspapers and printed over 45,000 copies of those newspapers.

Note from PressFriends

e had a great year
W
with the 4th and
5th grade reporters on
the Foshay Flash newspaper, and we hope to
see all of returning reporters again next year.
We also hope that if you
are going into the 4th
and 5th grade in the fall
that you’ll join us.
This year, we had a
lot of fun field trips. In
the fall, we went to see
a play at the Armstrong
Theatre in Torrance and
interviewed the actors
after the play.
In the spring, we
went to PressFriends
6th Annual Conference
with 250 other kids. We
went to a screening of
the movie, HOME, at
Fox Studios in Century
City. Then we went to
UCLA for lunch and a
scavenger hunt, as well
as a fun anti-bullying
presentation. All of the
reporters received trophies for their participation in PressFriends.

your 5th grade teacher,
for overseeing the program. She volunteers
