QB LINO`S A platform for children to express their views about school, parents, teachers, each other and the world!!! Not to be missed -Every month!!! Two weeks ago, classes 6.1 and 6.2 went to the „Leipziger Buchmesse“. We had to be at the Cole Sports Center by 7:15. We went there by bus. The trip there took about 2 to 3 hours. It would have been a bit boring if we hadn’t has been allowed to bring our I-Pods. We arrived there at 9:30. When we arrived we saw many people in costumes. We were allowed to go around the Buchmesse in groups of three or four. The Leipziger Buchmesse was basically 5 large halls with a lot of stands where you could buy books. Sometimes you got stuff for free! Both classes always met and listened to an author presenting a book. We listened to 2 presentations. One book was called „Sturm im Elfenland“and the other was called „Tribute von Panem: Tödliche Spiele“, the book that is also called the Hunger Games in English. Between the presentations we always had about an hour to go around in our groups. At about 16:00 we had to go and at 18:00 we arrived home. We all thought it was a really great day. Thanks to the organisers! The End By Attila The Völkerball Championship by Jonathan 6.2 Yesterday was the big School Championship! The classes 4-6 were playing against each other. The first games were: 6.1 against 6.2, they played very long till the 6.2 eventually won!! 5.2 against 5.1 the match was clearly better for 5.2 because they hit everyone in the field!!!! 4.2 against 4.1 after a long match the 4.2 won. Every team played two more games. Then there was a short break. After the break the teams played some more. In 1st place was the 5.2! Congratulations!! nd 2 were 6.2 but were able to keep the cup because Herr. Von Helden made a mistake and awarded victory to the wrong team!!! The fairness trophy went to 4.1 The School Musical “Cinderella” You may have heard of the Friday AG Musical Theatre. I’m in it and I think it’s really fun!!! We’re performing the Musical Cinderella, but it’s not the story of Cinderella that you know. It’s the story of Cinderella by Roald Dahl, which is much funnier! The Prince gets very violent with the Ugly Sisters and Cinderella marries the … no, I won’t tell you more, you’ll have to read the story or, better still, watch our Musical! I’m an Ugly Sister and I’m really pleased because I like being the mean one! Emily Grace thinks this about Musical Theatre: I like Musical Theatre, but I wish we would start earlier with the acting. Otherwise, it’s fun. Lara thinks this about Musical Theatre: Gut. We really hope you’ll watch our Musical!!! It will be amazing!!! Do you hate school? Well School is not as bad as you think. Child Labour -that is all I have to say! Child Labour is one of the greatest causes of misery all over the world. Many children have to work for their bread. Children at the age of 4 get sold and taken away to do child labour. But if you have read this far then you might have asked yourself “what is child labour?” Well child labour is work that children are forced to do in many poor countries like the Philippines, Africa, India and many other countries. Most children involved in child labour die because of this. They die in war at a very early age. They also die from the terrible chemicals they use while working in factories. They die because lots of multinational companies want to maximize their profits and the children will keep dying if we continue not to care! Please do what you can to help them have a better life by sending a small token of money this address to fight the exploitation of children. http://www.unicef.de/ By Hannah Johnston and Sina Wambach Interview with our super French Teacher Mme Oudjedi! Our 10 questions: Q: How was your first day at the Quentin-Blake-Europe-School Berlin? A: I was happy to be here, although probably a little worried too. It is exciting to begin in a new place, with a new staff and new pupils in a foreign country. I like to start new things. Q: Your German is très bien. Is German a hard language to learn for French people? A: It certainly is! It’s difficult, but it’s worth the effort, because you get to know different people, you learn about a different culture and you understand the world a little better when speaking other languages. And its fun too, I think. Q: What are the main differences between Germany and France? A: Food is important in French culture, so people take longer to eat. In schools, we have one hour and a half for lunch time, and we eat a starter, a main dish, then cheese and desert every day. Another point is that people cross the street any time, even if the “Ampelman” is red. I admit that it can be quite dangerous and would not advise you to do so! Q: Why did you want to come here to Germany and to our school? A: I like to stay in other countries for quite a while. I find it interesting. I also wanted to improve my German but I didn’t know I would have so many opportunities to speak English too! Indeed, I didn’t apply for a particular school, but only for Berlin. It was mere chance that I was sent to a bilingual school. I think I was very lucky! Q: Have you ever lived in Germany before? A: I spent one year in the south of Germany in Freiburg in Breigau a long time ago. That’s why I wanted to go more up north this time. Q: How long have you been here and how long are you planning to stay? (a long time we hope!) A: I arrived in August 2011 and will leave at the end of this school year. This was decided this month. I had wanted to stay one more year, but my employees in France wanted me back, so I have to go back to Paris. Q: That’s a real shame. What is your favourite German food? A: I like Kartoffelsalad (with yogurt sauce please), but more than anything else, I love Käsekuchen! Q: Which school do you like the most where you have been a teacher? A: Quentin Blake School is one of my favourites of course! Q: What is your favourite place in Berlin? A: I like the cafes in Berlin. I also like to visit historical places such as Check Point Charlie and the Allied Museum. Q: How do you like the pictures from Quentin Blake? A: Yes, I do. His pictures are great. I love art myself and would encourage everyone to do some form of art! Thank you very much for this interview Madame Oudjedi! By: Samiha and Natalia Easter sweets and treats One of my favourites is: The Edible Easter Basket Cupcake. Just buy a pack of plain muffins, of your choice, a pack of jellybeans and other sweets, two cups of white icing and sweetened coconut, coloured with green food colouring. Put the white icing on and then quickly before the icing dries bend a pipe cleaner or liquorice into an arch and put the end in each side of the cupcake. Shake the shredded coconut in a stainless steel bowl. Sprinkle on food colouring bit by bit, mixing vigorously to distribute the colour. Then sprinkle a pinch in the middle of the cupcake and lay three jellybeans in the nest of coconut. Tie a little ribbon around the pipe cleaner and give it as a gift or keep it for yourself. A perfect Easter treat. And if you think that’s all, it’s not. Visit Family Fun for loads of amazing recipes, crafts and so much more. The best thing is they have recipes for each season!!! Let’s get BAKING!!!!!!!!!! By Lucy New Jersey is in the USA and is an hour away from New York!!! Here is a picture of what New Jersey Hi guys, I am moving to the USA!!! How exciting is that! As my dad works for the company Bayer Health Care he has to move with the company wherever they go. We have already had to move to Germany (we lived in England) because of my dad’s work, and this time to the USA for two whole school years. It’s going to be in the “New Jersey” area!!! looks like: I am feeling very nervous and scared at the same time because I am going to lose all my friends for a while and I am never ever going to have a class that is this nice, friendly and funny again. I would also like to say thank-you to my teachers: Mrs Tausendfreund and Frau Klein. They were there whenever I needed them and taught me stuff I did not know!!! I am going to miss this school more than ever. (This is probably one of my last articles.) MC Hammer and Heidi Klotz: Hammer Time! If you look very closely you will be able to see that these two are actually not the same person!!! Separated at Birth? Underneath we have Heidi Klotz who works as a Teacher at our school. Above we have the rapper MC Hammer. They may have been separated at birth, but incredibly display amazing telepathic powers despite living on different continents (any twin will tell you about these powers) to syncronize their dress sense. Amazing! Specialities from Nationalities We got an e-mail on the Suggestion Box email address, suggesting to write an article on specialities of the many nationalities in our school. We think it’s a super duper idea, so we’ll start right now!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, so first, we’ll start with a speciality from Japan. Maili, who is sitting next to me right now, is from Japan. This week, as promised, there’s a speciality from France. We asked Mme Oudjedi, and her favourite specialities are Mousse au Chocolat and Salade Nicoise Here is the recipe for Salade Nicoise: Nicoise Salad Recipe Ingredients : Vinaigrette 1/2 cup lemon juice 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium shallot, minced 1 Tbsp minced fresh thyme leaves 2 Tbsp minced fresh basil leaves 2 teaspoons minced fresh oregano leaves 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper Salad 2 grilled or otherwise cooked tuna steaks* (8 oz each) or 2-3 cans of tuna 6 hard boiled eggs, peeled and either halved or quartered 10 small new red potatoes (each about 2 inches in diameter, about 1 1/4 pounds total), each potato scrubbed and quartered Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 medium heads Boston lettuce or butter lettuce, leaves washed, dried, and torn into bite-sized pieces 3 small ripe tomatoes, cored and cut into eighths 1 small red onion, sliced very thin 8 ounces green beans, stem ends trimmed and each bean halved crosswise 1/4 cup niçoise olives 2 Tbsp capers, rinsed and/or several anchovies (optional) Method *Marinate tuna steaks in a little olive oil for an hour. Heat a large skillet on medium high heat, or place on a hot grill. Cook the steaks 2 to 3 minutes on each side until cooked through. 1 Whisk lemon juice, oil, shallot, thyme, basil, oregano, and mustard in medium bowl; season to taste with salt and pepper and set aside. 2 Bring potatoes and 4 quarts cold water to boil in a large pot. Add 1 tablespoon salt and cook until potatoes are tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer potatoes to a medium bowl with a slotted spoon (do not discard boiling water). Toss warm potatoes with 1/4 cup vinaigrette; set aside. 3 While potatoes are cooking, toss lettuce with 1/4 cup vinaigrette in large bowl until coated. Arrange bed of lettuce on a serving platter (I used two serving platters, shown in the photos). Cut tuna into 1/2-inch thick slices, coat with vinaigrette. Mound tuna in centre of lettuce. Toss tomatoes, red onion, 3 tablespoons vinaigrette, and salt and pepper to taste in bowl; arrange tomato-onion mixture on the lettuce bed. Arrange reserved potatoes in a mound at edge of lettuce bed. 4 Return water to boil; add 1 tablespoon salt This is what your Salad Nicoise could and green beans. Cook until tender but crisp, look like. 3 to 5 minutes. Drain beans, transfer to reserved ice water, and let stand until just cool, about 30 seconds; dry beans well. Toss beans, 3 tablespoons vinaigrette, and salt and pepper to taste; arrange in a mound at edge of lettuce bed. 5 Arrange hard boiled eggs, olives, and chocolate (yumm!!!) anchovies (if using) in mounds on the lettuce bed. Drizzle eggs with remaining 2 tablespoons dressing, sprinkle entire salad with capers (if using), and serve immediately. Here’s the recipe for Mousse au Chocolat: Mousse au Chocolat Six to eight servings Adapted from Mastering the Art of French Cooking (Knopf) by Julia Child. 170 g bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, chopped 170 g unsalted butter, cut into small pieces 60 ml dark-brewed coffee (leave out, if you’re a child ) 4 large eggs, separated 170 g, plus 1 tablespoon sugar 30 ml dark rum (apple juice is also OK) 15 ml water pinch of salt 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1. Heat a saucepan one-third full with hot water, and in a bowl set on top, melt together the chocolate, butter and coffee, stirring over the barely simmering water, until smooth. Remove from heat. 2. Fill a large bowl with ice water and set aside. 3. In a bowl large enough to nest securely on the saucepan of simmering water, whisk the yolks of the eggs with the 2/3 cup of sugar, rum, and water for about 3 minutes until the mixture is thick, like runny mayonnaise. (You can also use a handheld electric mixer.) 3. Remove from heat and place the bowl of whipped egg yolks within the bowl of ice water and beat until cool and thick. Then fold the chocolate mixture into the egg yolks. 4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with the salt until frothy. Continue to beat until they start to hold their shape. Whip in the tablespoon of sugar and continue to beat until thick and shiny, but not completely stiff, then the vanilla. 5. Fold one-third of the beaten egg whites into the chocolate mixture, then fold in the remainder of the whites just until incorporated, but don’t overdo it or the mousse will lose volume. 6. Transfer the mousse to a serving bowl or divide into serving dishes, and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, until firm. Serving: I like to serve the chocolate mousse as it is, maybe with just a small dollop of whipped cream; it neither needs, nor wants, much adornment. Storage: The mousse au chocolat can be refrigerated for up to 4 days. I hope you have lots of fun making French food! Next week is recipes from Italy!!! 6.2 Hi! This time the Specialities are from Italy. Most of you will know Pizza and Pasta, but there are other interesting Specialities from this beautiful country too!!! For an Italien meal you could make Lasagna. Ingredients: • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 1 clove garlic This is Italy The Italian flag has 3 colours: green, white and red his is what your Lasagna could look like • 11/2 tsp each salt and pepper (or to taste) • 1 can (28 oz/796 ml) whole tomatoes • 2 cans (28 oz/796 ml) crushed tomatoes • whole dried red chilli pepper • 1 tsp oregano • 5 leaves fresh basil • grated cheese • 450 ml ricotta cheese (Italian style) • 1 brick mozzarella cheese 500 grams • 3 eggs Directions: Step 1 - The Sauce 1• In a large saucepan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook until lightly browned 2• Add salt and pepper; cook 5 minutes or until meat is cooked through, stirring constantly. 3• Stir in tomatoes, bay leaf, chilli pepper, bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and cook 1 hour, stirring occasionally. 4• Meanwhile, in a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook lasagne pasta 6 minutes, al dente. The reason the pasta is half cooked is because in the oven the lasagne will resume cooking and complete the process. 5• Drain lasagne pasta and set aside. Step 2 -The preparation 5• In a large baking pan add some sauce to the bottom of the pan. 6• Add the lasagne one piece at the time and compile them side by side. What do we need to make us HAPPY? By Hannah Johnston 6.1 Happiness has nothing to do with wealth. You might think you would be much happier if you had loads of money but that is not true! There have been studies of people that have won the lottery and their happiness has actually decreased! Many have sunk into depression because of all the troubles money has brought them. So wealth is definitely not everything! Happiness is all about how you think. Obviously you will be a lot happier if you think “luckily no one died” instead of “oh no, those things are ruined”. People have done tests and thinking positively really improves your happiness. Okay, nobody can think positively all the time, but trying to see the bright side of life will really improve your happiness. To stop not being unhappy, try to do this: Check what thoughts are in your head. Then see which of those thoughts are positive and negative. Then replace those negative thoughts with positive thoughts. That will really keep you happier than ever. There are even classes to go to where all you do is laugh. People pay loads of money for these classes, why don’t you try it at home with all of your sisters and brothers!? Here is a link to a laughter class in London: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWi6QVsW- By: Hannah Johnston and Sina Wambach SCIENCE FARE: You may or may not have heard about the upcoming Science fair. If you have been to some of the other science fairs at the Quentin Blake school, then you know that in the past, it was often only about getting sweets and the rest of it was fairly boring. This year it is going to be different and extra special because classes 6.1 and 6.2 are taking over!!! There will be boiling acids and sand that is never wet even in water! There will also be a sweet ban because of how it distracts the listeners. I can promise you, it will be awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A-T Hold it in front of a mirror A conversation We are playing Monopoly Planting is fun !!! For the second year in a row, Mrs. Klotz has bought plants for our school. In the new few days in March we will be planting lots of bulbs and flowers. Five classes have signed up for planting and we will have lots of fun!!! Here are some pictures of classes 6.2 and 1.3 planting today on the 21st of March: !!RESPECT!!! By Lilly 5.2: DO YOU CHILDREN SOMETIMES GET THE FEELING THAT TEACHERS DON’T RESPECT US LIKE WE RESPECT THEM? Well, I hope that this situation will change a little when the teachers read this article. Most of the time we don’t dare to say what’s really on our mind when the teachers are there. It seems like our mind stops working if a teacher is nearby. All I ask you is to throw your opinion about this situation in the school-newspaper suggestion box. We from the school newspaper don’t want to say that the teachers are awful, in fact most of them are great; we are just trying to tell the teachers that pupils earn the same respect as grown-ups do. Later on, we will tell you what the majority think about this. That’s democracy for you.
