National Nursing Home Week
I
n celebration of National
Nursing Home Week, each
department at LindenGrove
planned a group activity for the
Residents to participate in. The
Environmental Services department
planned a “float” program offering
different types of soda and ice cream
drinks. Some of the choices offered
included the traditional root beer float,
the Purple Cow, grape soda & vanilla
ice cream, the Brown Cow, Coca Cola,
vanilla ice cream & a shot of chocolate
syrup, and the Boston Cooler, ginger ale and vanilla ice cream.
The Residents enjoyed trying the different types of floats and
voted on their favorite. The Nursing Department did a variety of
crafts to include decorative boxes, serving trays, candy dishes,
and melted crayon art. Administration, Admissions, and Social
Serves had a petting zoo with rabbits and dogs. The Activities
Department did a collaborative painting activity. Each Resident
had the opportunity to paint on the same piece of art to come up
with the final masterpiece. The week ended with build your own
sundaes with the Food Services Department. It was a fun week as
staff and Residents participated in the various activities together.
Celebrating National
Hot Dog Month
J
uly was National Hot Dog month and
we decided to make a party of it. We
invited the Brewers Racing Sausages to
LindenGrove–New Berlin. Most of the Elders have
seen them race at the ball game. They look a lot
larger sitting next to one verses watching them
race on the baseball field. As the Elders took their
pictures with the racing sausages, our dietary staff
had mini hotdogs for tasting. The kitchen had
created a variety of different toppings to choose
from. Here is a sample of some of the choices:
chili & cheese, everything bagel with poppy seeds
and chopped
green onions,
guacamole,
BLT dog, and
spice it up with
a spicy blue
cheese dog. The
choices seemed
endless. They
sure did enjoy
creating their own
personal hotdog
for National Hot
Dog Month.
Caribbean Adventure
T
his year the LindenGrove–New Berlin Activity Department and the Elders decided to kick
off summer with a Caribbean adventure. While we listened to steal drums played the Elders
tapped their feet to the beat of the island music. The morning was spent cutting up star fruit,
mango, papaya, kiwi and pineapple which were made into fruit kabobs. Next we cut plantains into thin
slices and fried them to make chips for the guacamole. This Caribbean adventure was unforgettable.
Lorraine B. cheered her pina colada while enjoying her plate of Caribbean food.

Antique Car Show at
Menomonee Falls
O
n Wednesday, July 24th, a perfect night for a car show,
Residents, their families, and staff took a step back in
time. Members of the Model A Club and Kettle Moraine
Model T & Vintage Car Club were invited to bring their cars and
show them off at LindenGrove’s Annual Antique Car Show. There
was a good showing of the old Fords, with a few cars from the 60’s.
Guests sang along to the Remember When Duo and enjoyed root
beer floats! Pictured right: Margaret H. & below: Frank H.
LindenGrove Menomonee Falls hosted the
16th Annual Senior Picnic at Rotary Park
S
unday, June 30th was calm, warm and sunny.
LindenGrove volunteers started arriving at
the park at 9 a.m. to set up. Some seniors from
the community had already arrived and were staking
out their favorite picnic table spot. By noon, when the
picnic officially started, the park was full and seniors
were standing in the food line. Many seniors came in
groups to socialize together and play cards before the
food and entertainment started. After a hearty meal of
burgers, brats, potato
salads, baked beans,
fruit salad and desserts,
it was time to dance.
Serving tables were
moved from under the
shelter and a dance floor
was established in front
of the band. The Jeff
Winard Band has been
performing at the senior
picnic for the last 12
years. They are a crowd favorite that play a wide variety
of music.
Midway through the picnic, the music stopped and
LindenGrove volunteers gave away 125 door prizes to
lucky seniors. Over 60 local businesses donated money
and gifts that were given away at the picnic. Whether a
prize was won or not, it was once again a fun day for all
who attended.

Family Ice Cream Social
A Big Hit!
O
n Tuesday June 18th, LindenGrove–
Menomonee Falls Residents and their
family members, along with staff,
attended an ice cream social held on the beautiful
rear patio and dining room. Much to their surprise,
when they arrived, the sundae was in the process
of being built in two 5 ft. rain gutters! It took several
people to scoop over six gallons of ice cream into the
gutters. Toppings including nuts, colored jimmies,
toffee bits, cookie crumbs, butterscotch, chocolate &
caramel syrup and of course whipped topping and
cherries to complete the edible creation!
As the guests indulged in the sweet treat, they
tapped their feet and sang along to music of the 50’s
and 60’s. Everyone enjoyed the casual evening with
friends and good music, but especially the ice cream!

Men’s Club
Baseball Game
T
he Ridge Men’s Club loves to go out to Miller
Park at least once during the year! This year
they had lots of fun with the assistance of our
Men’s Club volunteers who accompanied the group
on June 5th. Even though the Brewers did end up losing
the game, the men had a wonderful time. They enjoyed
classic ball park food – peanuts, soda, brats,
hot dogs, and even some beers! On the drive
home, it is always fun to reminisce about
how the city of Milwaukee has changed
and how the ball park is different than
what most Residents remember. The men
reminisced about the good times they had
with their families as we sang ‘Take me out
to the Ball Game’ on the way home

Strawberry Fest at the Ridge!
T
he month of June
is the perfect time
to celebrate one of
our favorite fruits here at the
Ridge. As you can see by the
pictures, our Residents really
like strawberries. Strawberry
ice cream, shakes, tortes, pies,
jams and strawberry with
rhubarb are just some of the
items the Residents really enjoy
from our kitchen at the Ridge.
Annually, we have a strawberry
festival where a few Residents
get together and make a
strawberry dessert - strawberry
pies with a graham cracker
crust and whipped topping.
The Residents also had fun
decorating the activity room
with strawberry balloons. They
were fun to make. They used
markers to draw the seeds on
the balloons and green tissue
paper to make the leaves of the
berry. The room looked fun
and magical as the balloons
danced around the room in the
air! As always, we also like to
discuss not only recipes, but the
nutritional value of the berries,
how they are picked and where
they are shipped from. A little
education to keep the mind
inquisitive. Fun was had by all!

Creative Story Telling at LindenGrove–Mukwonago
R
esidents at LindenGrove–Mukwonago have been taking part in a creative storytelling program called
TimeSlips facilitated by Activity Therapist Rodd Szmania. TimeSlips is a creative storytelling method
that opens storytelling to everyone by replacing the pressure to remember with encouragement to
imagine. It was originally designed as a way for people with dementia and their care partners to share in creative
expression together. Since its inception in 1998, TimeSlips has become a way for people to grow and connect
across the challenges of cognitive disability. TimeSlips goals are to inspire people with dementia to share the gifts
of their imaginations, to see beyond the loss and to recognize the strengths of people with dementia, and improve
the quality of life. To achieve these goals, TimeSlips offers trainings and certifies the facilitator in the TimeSlips
method. TimeSlips works to build the field of creative expression in dementia care by fostering research and
partnerships between artists and professional organizations, and consults with those looking to embed creative
engagement in their elder care program. Residents who have been participating in this program have really
enjoyed it. Below is an example from one of our TimeSlips program:
This is on the beach of course!
It must be summertime.
He was swimming and he heard the church bells.
When you hear the church bells you’re supposed to say the Angels.
He feels happy because he likes the beach.
He is alone at the beach and he’s jumping up for joy.
Before he got to the beach they had a picnic.
After he’s jumping for joy he’s going back for a swim.
He sees his shadow in the water coming into shore.
The waves coming into shore make a nice sound.
It’s a bright warm day and he smells fish and water.
Then he goes home.

Administration Intern
M
y name is Emily Schoblaska. I am a Health Care
Administration major at the University of Wisconsin-Eau
Claire. The Health Care Administration program includes
a 50-week internship in order to gain leadership experience in a longterm care facility. The internship is an integral part of the program
and allows me to apply my skills, and knowledge from the classroom
in a real life setting. I started my internship in June at LindenGrove–
Mukwonago. During these 50 weeks I will be rotating through all the
departments and completing leadership projects. I’ve enjoyed getting
to know the Residents, and all the staff has been very welcoming and
friendly. I’m from Green Bay and in my free time I enjoy camping,
spending time with my family, and traveling. I look forward to learning
more about the roles and responsibilities of working in a long-term care
facility and completing my internship experience at LindenGrove.

Take Me Out to the Ball Game
E
lders of LindenGrove enjoyed attending a baseball
game at Miller Park on Wednesday, May 22nd. It
was a perfect day for a baseball game. It was Senior
Day at the ball park. Purchase an ice cold beer, get a hotdog
for $1. Such a deal! Judy K. voted for the bratwurst to win
the sausage race and ended up
taking the win. She posed for a
picture with the brat on her way
out. The Elders enjoyed watching
the Milwaukee Brewers take on the
Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers
took a loss that day and a loss for
that series but we still cheered on
our Wisconsin team in hopes for
a great season. We always enjoy
ourselves when family members can
come along to the games. Pictured
are Audrey M. & Delores G. with their
daughters.
Holy Apostles 4th Graders Perform for Residents
E
very year the 4th grade class of Holy Apostles comes to perform for the Elders of LindenGrove-New
Berlin. About 40 boys and girls are learning to play a variety of instruments from the drums to the
trumpet. They all played Mary Had a Little Lamb on the Recorder and together they defiantly filled the
room with excitement. Each student took a turn playing a popular song that all the Residents knew, from the solo
Go Tell it on the Mountain played on the xylophone, to the clarinet and saxophone duet playing Yankee Doodle.
The Elders love singing and tapping their feet along with the children playing their musical instruments.

Let Our Gardens Grow
ictured on left are Audrey R. and Eudell B. starting our vegetable garden in one of our raised vegetable
beds. This year in our back garden we got two new raised beds, 9 ft. long by 3 ft. wide. We are planting
tomatoes, green, red & yellow peppers, sage, and cilantro. We are going to experiment this year with
watermelons, strawberries, and cucumbers. Also we planted a lot of flowers in our planters. Pictured right is
Doreen C. planting some geraniums. The Elders haven’t had to do much watering because Mother Nature has
been making sure to let it rain just enough. We continue to watch them grow in the summer months and hope to
make some fresh salsa or herb salads for a refreshing summer snack. Let’s hope we get to the fruits and vegetables
before the rabbits do.
In the Kitchen
A
s soon as our Elders, Audrey and Betty
sliced into the fresh crisp stalks of our
home-grown rhubarb, the air was filled with
its sweet/tart aroma. Soon after the rhubarb started
to bake the Elders and staff started to ask “How long
before it’s done?” This simple recipe takes but a few
minutes and makes the sampler think of ‘the one mom
use to make.’ Give it a try! Mom Ford’s Rhubarb Dessert
5 cups rhubarb (chopped)
½ cup sugar
1small box strawberry Jello (dry)
1 box white or yellow cake mix (dry)
1 stick melted butter or margarine
1 cup water
Layer in order given in a 9x13 ungreased
pan. Do not mix. Bake in 350 degree
oven for 40 minutes or until lightly
browned. Serve with ice cream or
whipped cream.

Tennis Anyone?
R
esident Council brought it to
our attention that the Residents
wanted to play table tennis. For
some of them it has been years since they
played. A little time was needed to warm up
but it wasn’t long before they were hitting
the ball back and forth to one another. You
could tell they were definitely enjoying
themselves by all the laughing and smiling
that was taking place. (L to R) Betty M., Sarah

Outstanding Houseplant
E
arly this spring the UW Extension SouthEast
Wisconsin Master Gardeners helped repot the
houseplants. Residents Raymond and Eugenia
his wife, chose the plants they wanted kept outside the
door of their room. Raymond has been watering the
plants and staking the Angel Wing Begonia. I don’t know
his secret but the plants have at least tripled in size with
his dedicated care. Raymond is also a bird watcher and keeps feeders
and houses (homemade by Raymond) in a tree outside
of the couple’s windows. Keep up the good work Ray!
C
ongratulations to Residents Raymond &
Eugenia for celebrating 70 years of marriage in
the month of July.

Linden Heights Resident Shares Her Talent &
Leads Sing-Alongs
I
n June, we were delighted to have our very own
Mary W, who is a Resident at Linden Heights,
play piano for a roomful of Residents. While
Mary plays the piano, Residents sing along to many
favorite songs such as: Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Hail,
Hail The Gang’s All Here, On Wisconsin, Goodnight Irene,
What A Friend We Have In Jesus, You Are My Sunshine,
God Bless America and everyone’s favorite, Show Me
The Way To Go Home. Residents are amazed by the way
Mary can play the piano all by memory. We are grateful
recipients of Mary’s mother’s encouragement for Mary
to practice the piano while she washed the dishes.
LindenGrove Foundation Honors Veterans &
Their Families with a Memorial Day Fish Fry Outing
O
n Friday, May 24th, Linden Heights veterans were honored for their service to our country at
a fish fry at The 5 O’Clock Club in Pewaukee. Also attending the fish fry, were Residents of
Linden Heights who attended in honor of their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice to
this great country.
Pictured are Esther & Winnie holding drinks &
Bob & Bud outside 5 O’clock club
Our Memorial Day message
was to take a moment to
honor the men and women
who served and to give thanks
to the families who gave so
much to this country. A toast
was given to all our veterans
at the fish fry and a toast to
the LindenGrove Foundation
for providing Linden Heights
Residents the fish fry. A
special thank you to all the
members who contribute to the
Foundation. This was a day to
always remember.

Celebrating Summer
with a Watermelon Social
W
hat a great afternoon for a watermelon
social. The room was decorated with
checkered tablecloths, watermelon
plates and cups and watermelon art work. To start out
the watermelon social, Residents were encouraged
to unscramble watermelon related words and color
watermelon pictures. Watermelon poetry (who knew
there was such a thing?) was read and trivia presented.
We also played ‘Guess How Many Watermelon Seeds
are in the Container’ game. To everyone’s amazement,
there was 1,600 seeds in the container. After all the
watermelon games were complete, Residents were able
to bite into and enjoy a slice of watermelon. What a
delightful afternoon of fun. Thank you to the dietary
staff for providing us the watermelon and Nikki in
Marketing for making this day a watermelon splash!

Eden in Waukesha
L
indenGrove renewed their Eden Registry
status on July 25, 2013. Their campus has
three different homes: an assisted living
home for 60 Elders, a home for 24 Elders living with
dementia and a home for 135 Elders that need skilled
services. A new addition was added on to the front of
the home. We now have a large, new area for family to
visit along with a new garden area.
When a Resident is new to LindenGrove, they
receive a welcome basket and are introduced to others
who live and work here. Staff will ask new Residents
questions to get to know more about them. The
information is compiled in a short document called
‘Five Things to Know About Me’ and is displayed in
the Resident’s room.
Early in the morning, you will notice it is very
quiet. Because of the Resident Choice Meal Plan,
Elders are encouraged to sleep in and come to
breakfast when they are ready. When they awake,
there is a continental breakfast available followed
by brunch. In the afternoon there is a snack, supper
and another evening snack. The Elders say they do
not worry about going hungry because all they have
to do is wait a minute and someone is offering them
something to eat.
Residents have the opportunity be become as little
or as much involved in social activities. For example,
BINGO is an important pastime in the community and
if someone loves to sing, they can join the choir.
Ring Toss & Root Beer E
ach month, the Residents at Linden
Heights enjoy the game of ring toss. We
normally form two teams, so each team
can cheer on their teammates. This month at ring
toss, we had 3 special guests helping us. The 3 special
guests were Hailey, Jacob, and Mathew who were
visiting their Great-Grandma Lela for the day. The
Residents were happy to spend the afternoon with the
children because they have so much energy to offer
our Residents. After ring toss, we all enjoyed a glass of
root beer and we welcomed the children back again for
another round of ring toss.
The back patio includes a pergola, children’s play
area, furniture, and more garden areas. It overlooks
the high school and practice field. Everyone enjoys
spending time out there when the weather is good.
Local talent is invited to perform on the patio. As
one care partner put it, “Just look around and see the
smiles on people’s faces and hear the laughter in the
air. It is a home full of joy where people care for one
another – a family.”

L
inden Heights had their
backyard fence painted by
River Glen Youth and Elmbrook
Church’s youth this summer. Elmbrook’s
youth also hosted a carnival for our
Residents. Residents won tickets for
prizes at various booths. Following this
we headed down to the dining room to
build our own sundaes with strawberries,
caramel, chocolate, whipped cream, nuts,
and the works stuffed into a delicious
waffle bowl.
Linden Heights has also been
enjoying Italian wines this summer to
celebrate Festa Italiana, complete with
a variety of sparking juices for our nonalcoholic drinkers. A Bloody Mary Social
was also held in May, complete with
all the fixings, including cheese, olives,
pickles, celery, Old Wisconsin sausage,
black olives and Gardetto’s snacks.
We also went to the Green Meadow’s
Petting Farm this season and held kittens,
chicks, ducklings, and ferrets. We pet a
sheep, baby bunny, chinchilla, and more!
We saw a two week old goat that was
separated from its mother for the first
time! One of the chickens laid a blue egg
that Green Meadow’s gave to us and then
they sent everyone home with novelty
gifts.
We also watched ‘The Running of the
Goats’. This event occurs when the doors
from the petting bin are opened and the
goats run down the farm to be the first
one to eat dinner in the field. It was a
great time!
