I’ve worked with Gale as board chairman for the past three years and served as a board member under her leadership for many years prior to that. Gale Ellsworth Trailways President and CEO All of the organizational milestones accomplished during my tenure with Trailways are the result of the combined commitment, dedication and the work of many, including the Trailways board, staff and other team members. My service to Trailways has offered me the most rewarding experiences of my career. I am incredibly thankful to have had this great opportunity to work for such an outstanding organization, its team of volunteer leaders, dedicated staff and, of course, a committed team of Trailways motorcoach companies. Trailways is a remarkable entity that possesses a great heritage and it is a powerful travel-related brand. I am truly honored to have been part of its extraordinary history. When I began this journey with Trailways in 1997, we had a small office in downtown Washington, D.C. It was just me… no other staff members! I hired a couple of project-related staffers, such as Diane Walden in sales, to help secure affiliated partners, vendors and suppliers (we had none and now have approximately 100) and Tracey (Buswell) Simmons to write Trailways’ grand history (65th). I was honored to receive the close guidance and support of four awesome board chairmen: Gene Berardi (Adirondack, NY & Pine Hill Trailways), Bill Steele (Carolina Trailways), Ron Moore (Burlington Trailways) and Tony Fiorini (Silver State Trailways). 4 The “Industry Roll-Up” in 1996-97 had the entire industry extremely nervous—especially smaller bus companies who were worried Coach USA would roll into their territory/town and roll them right out of business as they didn’t feel they could be as competitive. So, there was a rush by many of these smaller bus companies to get protection through Trailways and its well-known and respected brand. This way, smaller companies would receive instant brand recognition, globally. The tragic events of 9/11 stunned and shocked everyone. All of a sudden riding the bus was the only way you could get across America. For weeks the bus industry led the way in helping calm the country as far as getting safely home. I even had stockbrokers calling me asking what our Stock Exchange call letters were because clients were calling them asking to invest in Trailways, the bus company! Throughout my tenure I have been surrounded and supported by some great volunteer leaders who served Trailways as members of the board of directors and advisors. I, along with Trailways, were privileged to be the recipient of their time, talent, financial contributions, dedication and commitment to this grand organization year after year! In particular, I was honored to receive the (Clockwise from top left) Ronald (Ron) Moore, Burlington Traiways (IA) 2009-2011; Eugene (Gene) Berardi, Jr, Adirondack, New York & Pine Hill Trailways (NY) 1997-2000; Anthony (Tony) Fiorini, Silver State Trailways (CA/NV) 2012-2014 and William (Bill) Steele, Carolina Trailways (NC) 2000-2008. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2 0 1 5 ISSUE Board Salutes Gale Ellsworth T railways board and team members credit retiring Trailways President & CEO Gale Ellsworth with leadership that helped revitalized the well-known brand. How thoughtful and caring the vendors/suppliers were in the very beginning and throughout my tenure. They advised me on which shows to attend and which bus companies to recruit. They have always made me feel “welcomed and included” whenever I would stop by their booths or saw them at trade events. They are always candid—and it is very helpful to have that kind of honesty! Founded in 1936, Trailways is today comprised of 70-plus, independently owned or operated motorcoach companies located throughout North America and Europe. But when Ellsworth assumed leadership in 1997, Trailways had only 14 bus companies within its network. “Our team will be losing an extraordinary leader. She has been Trailways’ No. 1 champion expounding the power of the brand. Gale has steered our organization through astonishing changes with her reformist, entrepreneurial style of leadership. Shamefully, I probably have more shades of red lipstick than anyone else in the industry. Plus, I cannot go into a clothing store without being drawn to anything red first and foremost. Yes, there is more red clothing than any other color hanging in my closet! Lastly, I am so proud of how much work has been accomplish by such a mighty, yet very small group of talented staffers—nearly all of them have been supporting Trailways since I first began my tenure over 17 years ago. Again, thank you all for allowing me to serve Trailways; I wish you safe travels and many Happy Trails! Z Gale Ellsworth Trailways President and CEO (1997-2015) Gale’s trademark theme events are a highlight of the Trailways annual conferences. 5 “Our team will be losing an extraordinary leader. She has been Trailways’ number one champion expounding the power of the brand. Gale has steered our organization through astonishing changes with her reformist, entrepreneurial style of leadership. Because of her visionary efforts, Trailways is positioned to continue its advancement toward a bright and progressive future.” —Trailways Board Chairman, Tony Fiorini (2012-2014) Silver State Trailways y (CA/NV) ( ) A look back over the years with Trailways Stockholders Stockholders, friends and staff. 6 Board Salutes Gale Ellsworth continued advancement toward a bright and progressive future,” Trailways Board Chairman Tony Fiorini said. At the core of her legacy is not only a larger network of affiliated bus carriers, Fiorini said, but a litany of service and program benefits that equate to stronger brand value—all of which helped to rekindle the Trailways legendary team spirit. She has also built a highly popular, well-attended annual stockholders conference that includes a diverse group of trade representatives, affiliated partners and industry supporters. A succession team is in place to ensure smooth transition in early 2015 as the search for Trailways’ next staff executive is already in motion; interested parties may contact “Trailways Search Committee” for application information through email only (joan@trailways.com). Additionally, the Search Committee has retained an executive recruiter to assist in the process. With retirement from her Trailways leadership position, Ellsworth is capping a 30-year career leading professional societies, foundations and trade organizations, all of which have been headquartered in the national capital region. She began in 1985 as vice president of marketing for the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, an association serving philanthropic fundraisers. There she advanced through marketing, membership, public affairs and operation positions to president. In 1994, she became the executive director of an association serving women in the communications field as well as director of the association’s educational foundation. She signed-on as Trailways’ president and “chief brand champion” in 1997. (Below) This year’s meeting will take place in Indian Wells, California (Palm Springs), March 8-10, 2015. Transforming Trailways: T Updated Strategic Business Plan he Trailways Strategic Planning Committee, composed of company owners from throughout the network, is in the final stages of developing an updated, three-year Trailways Strategic Plan (2015-2018). Co-chairs are Curtis Riggs of VIA Trailways of AZ/CA and Tom Bazow, Excursions Trailways, IN/OH. The committee will next meet on February 2-4, 2015, at the Trailways headquarters in Fairfax, VA, to further the initiative and have invited interested Stockholders to participate; so, it’s not too late to give feedback. (Please call Trailways at 703-691-3052 for details, for the survey or to provide general comments.) Looking ahead, the committee plans to present the interim draft to the Board at the March board meeting, and then give a presentation at the 2015 Annual Stockholders Meeting & Conference in California, March 8-10, 2015 (Miramonte Resort, Indian Wells, CA). (See page 42 for details.) 8 Goal: 2015–2018 Trailways Strategic Plan To create a stronger Trailways organization that can better serve, support and benefit its unified network of superior, safe, reliable and profitable passenger ground transportation companies. Riggs said, “We will address new or realigned programs to enhance and expand the well-being and growth of your company through its affiliation with Trailways.” He said Trailways will address other measures or directives that may be used to develop and formulate long-term initiatives to help realign, strengthen and transform Trailways. “These far-reaching endeavors have one single purpose: to create a stronger organization that can continued on page 10 F E AT U R E 2 0 1 5 ISSUE better serve, support and benefit a unified network of superior, safe, reliable and profitable passenger ground transportation companies affiliated with Trailways.” Background on the planning process: What is a BRAND? A brand is… X Something that customers ask for by name X The name used by customers when talking about the product with other people X When people think of the name rather than the product 75 percent of respondents identified customer service and the caliber of their employees as their greatest strengths. A thorough evaluation of Q The second survey (June ity of its own, beyond the product itself Trailways began in the fall of 2013 2014) was titled “Trailways: X Something that people would pay a premium with an in-depth Trailways Brand Its Future.” It asked for under that—and no other name Study. The study included trends and Trailways Stockholders to assess Trailways as an entity analyses of issues, including challenges and its future, etc. The survey or obstacles that might deter the was an excellent opportunity to receive feedback well-being and growth of our organization. Then the committee held its first meeting in Dallas (March 2014) with the support of Echo Trailways as the local host. Afterwards, in the summer of 2014, Stockholders were asked to complete two surveys. Q The first was a Trailways Stockholder Self Evaluation. It captured individual data about how a company feels about its strengths as perceived by its customers and employees regarding its competitive position in the marketplace. The evaluation showed from Stockholders about Trailways: its mission, its brand value, strengths, weaknesses, future opportunities, likes and dislikes, and more. Comments about the mission clustered around internal and external purposes for Trailways. Internally, the Stockholders desire help increasing their business income, such as through more charter referrals. Externally, the primary desire is to continue providing the safe, reliable, courteous service to passengers that has earned for Trailways its well-respected brand name. She is already making great contributions to the team and will be at the March conference in California. Many of you know Marin. She comes to Terri Marin, Senior Trailways from Consolidated Safety Vice President of Services (CSS)—most recently its Marketing & subsidiary, the Transportation Safety Communications Exchange (TSX). There she marketed participation in TSX’s safety certification program to motor carriers throughout the USA. “Trailways is a highly respected transportation brand that the traveling public has looked to since its beginnings in 1936. My own first bus trip as a child was on a Trailways coach, driven by my uncle. Trailways is part of my heritage and I am excited to be part of its future.” —TERRI MARIN She oversees the day-to-day marketing activities, including the development, implementation and management of all strategic and operational activities such as group sales, advertising, stockholder services and network expansion with an emphasis on activities aimed at brand awareness worldwide. Z Trailways is a Winning Team… By Terri Marin, Trailways Senior VP-Sales & Marketing T hank you for all the emails welcoming me to the Team. It was a pleasure to meet many of our Stockholders and many of our Affiliated Partners during the California Bus Association annual meeting (October 2014) in CA. Over the next few months I hope to have the opportunity to meet the rest of this great team. In November (2014), I held my first network-wide sales and marketing meeting (via conference call) with Stockholders and sales/charter contacts. The purpose of these calls is specifically to discuss a variety of Trailways corporate enhancements pertaining to the charter group sales process for managing the Request for Quotes via phone and/or website submissions. In addition, on the November 2014 call, we discussed: X Stockholders response time on charter quotes to home office; X Sales technique enhancements on calls and emails (goal to secure a higher % of booked trips from our Charter business); X Market research — the Trailways brand; X Current stockholders assistance for network expansion in open territories; X Trailways bus wraps; X Community outreach; X Future plans for 2015 (Trailways Website-Improvements). With the powerful Trailways brand name, why is it that a greater number of quote request are not booked? After spending time listening to callers, our sales team determined there was potential for enhancing the Customer/Trailways 12 dialogue. Going forward we will provide additional information the caller may not have realized they should be thinking about before they select the right motor carrier to transport their tour group, school, athletic team church group and so on. These request calls are an excellent opportunity for us to educate consumers and to differentiate Trailways from the other motorcoach companies. I am all about leading with safety first! What do Trailways Stockholders have that the other 4,000 legally registered motorcoach companies don’t? Bragging rights! All Trailways companies are Department of Defense (DOD) approved and undergo safety audits every two years. This designation guarantees that every Trailways company participates in the North American transportation industry’s most stringent annual on-site safety inspection and audit, which is implemented by the US DOD. We also mention other qualities about our Trailways carriers: • Nearly 80 years of experience; • The entire Trailways network of vehicles is supported by real-time GPS; • Our Companies are highly service oriented; • All our carriers must maintain extremely high operational standards to affiliate and remain affiliated within the brand. Our goal is to make it obvious that a Trailways company is their BEST choice! For the full minutes on this meeting and many updates since then, please see the Trailways stockholder news portal www.teamtrailways.com (Sales & Marketing tab) or contact terri@trailways.com. In other news, I represented Trailways at several industry events in 2014. For example, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conference in Buffalo, NY (September 2014). Approximately 600 government officials, enforcement and industry members attended in an effort to affect meaningful changes in transportation safety. The general session included regulatory updates from the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), the Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) and the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The general session also featured a federal roundtable discussion featuring Bill Bronrott, Deputy Administrator, FMCSA; Darren E. He has also served on the board in the past. He represents Trailways’ Southeast Region. Thrasher has been at the helm for several national and international Trailways transportation projects, including the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Democratic National Convention. “One of the opportunities we need to develop is the interchange of drivers and equipment within the guidelines of federal law,” he said. “There’s also potential for more organized competition with low-cost carriers that do not have Trailways’ decades of safe and secure operations behind them.” — Alan Thrasher Thrasher and his sister Alyce acquired ownership of the bus company in 2007. (June 25, 2014). Thank you to for helping with this intensive effort to communicate our issues in Congress. As you may know, the motorcoach tour and travel industry contributes nearly $112.7 billion in total economic activity, and has one of the strongest safety records among all modes of transportation. We are proud to share this message on Capitol Hill as part of our event. The Trailways owners joined other national bus owners for 284 prescheduled appointments with members of the House of Representatives from their districts and their state senators. Why participate? It’s important to meet with the congressional staffers on the Hill in Washington because Scott Riccio they are not the same staff at the state or local offices. As you build relationships with the Washington staff, you can contact them directly when issues arise. UMA Capitol Hill dates are earlier than usual next year: March 18-19, 2015. I hope to see you there and please note that most appointments can be set up jointly with other Trailways and/or UMA members. All appointments are pre-arranged for you and talking points are provided and reviewed at a briefing in advance. To recap, our key message points were: preservation of charter bus protections; return to zero federal fuel tax for over-the-road buses; and increased opportunities for contracting with local transit agencies. We also discussed many regulatory reforms, such as: due process for imminent hazard and out-of-service orders; prohibition on third-party inspection requirements; local entity requirements for registrations of charter bus operators and en-route inspections. Of course, UMA and Trailways and other bus associations provide updates monthly on issues that need your response and support. We appreciate all of you who took the time to advocate for our industry. Victor Parra, president and CEO of the United Motorcoach Association, said at the morning meeting, “The messages you share will have a positive impact on important policies and legislation that affect the ability of your business to thrive and grow. Z 21 BOSS LADY 2 0 1 5 ISSUE Lori Moore, Burlington Trailways Corporate Secretary L ori met her husband Ron Moore (President of Burlington Trailways) on a bus trip and they’ve been riding together in life and business for 44 years. Lori began her company leadership role in 1981 when the Moores sold their New Jersey motorcoach company and moved Lori Moore their family to Iowa to get out of the big city and back to Lori’s Midwestern family roots. They called their new company Burlington Trailways, a founding name of National Trailways Bus System that five companies formed in 1936 to support and promote independent motor coach owners and operators. What career did you envision as a youth? I grew up in Indiana, became a teacher and taught school until I married. Then I stayed home to rear our three children (two boys and a girl) until we moved from New Jersey to Iowa. Trailways became a part of my life early on because I rode Trailways to and from home while I was in college. How did you come into the bus business? When we moved to Iowa, Ron asked me if I would like to work part time in the company. I wanted to help him because we were basically starting over. Of course, I found out that his idea of part time is a 12-hour day! I started by doing pretty much everything, especially the billing and accounting—and all the reports for various agencies. What prepared you for your leadership role and who were your mentors? When we first came to Iowa, there was another Trailways company in the state and a woman there who helped me a lot with my reports. I had no business background at all, so I learned as I went along — particularly from my mistakes. Then we had a family friend who became our accountant, and he helped me out. I just did what had to be done. It probably took me about a year before I became comfortable with what I had to do. Describe your typical day and the most satisfying and challenging aspects of your job. We start about 5:30 a.m. I visit the bus depot to 22 handle finances and prepare daily reports. We have a daily morning staff meeting at 8:15 that usually lasts about 45 minutes. After that, I go to the post office and the tour office and pick up stuff from there, take them their mail and anything for the main office. I try to get out of here by 5 — a 12-hour day is pretty common. ILLUSTRATION: JULIETTE BORDA Boss Lady: Describe the company’s culture and commitment to customers that you want in your employees. We have a family culture. We help one another out, and though we may not always agree about things, we try to work out things together. This carries over to our feeling about being on Team Trailways. If someone is on a long charter trip and something goes wrong, you can get help from a team member. Working together helps us all in business. For our company, we look for people who value family life. Also, we want people who have integrity. Prayer is a big part of how we operate and and we even pray about who has integrity before we hire them! We don’t want anyone who will cut corners in business or anywhere. Which other Trailways companies do you partner with most often? We work with Huskey Trailways and Don Ferrone at Prairie Trailways in Chicago on charters. If we have a charter group on the east coast, we work with Adirondack Trailways. We work with whatever company is in the area we are going to and we ask their permission to pick up in their territory. What do you do for fun and relaxation? Where is your favorite travel destination? Our two boys work in the company, so we see each other all the time. About once a year in the summer, we take time off just to have fun together with the whole family —including our seven grandchildren. We take a bus to someplace like Niagara Falls, New York City or the Jersey shore. Border issues and industry regulation also continue to affect companies that operate under the maple leaf. “We used to have a stronger Canadian dollar,” Hundt said, “but now it’s about ten cents lower that the American dollar. This means the cost of coaches is rising for our operators. The upside is that the value of equipment is higher now.” The lower dollar value makes Canada a more affordable destination for travelers from the US and elsewhere, he said, and Canadian-owned used motorcoach equipment is once again more affordable for buyers from outside the country. especially when agents ask that passengers disembark with luggage, answer questions and have passports scanned. “ Hundt said the motorcoach industry regulation, especially for line runs, continues to be the domain of individual provinces. This means there is often better trade between Canadian provinces and the US than there is among provinces. “We can’t trade between our provinces in some cases, so this means here in Ontario we can’t buy the beautiful wines of British Columbia but we can enjoy the array that comes Another thing affecting operators is a new free trade agreement with the European Union. Hundt said this development makes European equipment more reasonable in price for Canadians because it can come into the country duty-free. “The new agreement opens new opportunities to grow trade and business for Canadians, and I look for the US to follow,” Hundt added. Border crossings for Canadian operators into the US remains arduous, he continued. “It still takes way too long to process coaches,” he said. “We’ve piloted a manifest program that lists passenger names and passport numbers for charter groups we send to border crossing agents for expediting. There has been some improvement, but coach checks for line run buses can still take an hour or two at the border, 28 METRO Magazine named Larry and Lorna Hundt, owners of the Kitchener, Ontario, Canada-based Great Canadian Trailways as the winner of its 2013 Motorcoach Operator of the Year Award. I N T E R N AT I O N A L N E W S 2 0 1 5 ISSUE “We used to have a stronger Canadian dollar,” says Hundt, “but now it’s about ten cents lower that the American dollar. This means the cost of coaches is rising for our operators. The upside is that the value of equipment is higher now.” —Larry Hundt to us from New York and other places in the US,” he said. “De-regulation would enable freer competition both inside and outside a province. As it is, we have operators in Quebec and elsewhere that are struggling financially because of their mandate to serve smaller, rural communities that drag down profits. Charter work has largely been de-regulated, but line runs are still highly protected. Protectionism should not exist among the provinces,” he said. Hundt added he had hopes there would be an opportunity for Team Trailways to bring equipment to next summer’s Pan Am games in Toronto, but needs have been scaled down due to budget constraints and the use of school buses. Z Europe News from Germany: Report from Helmut Seitz, President of Seitz-Reisen Trailways of Germany T railways’ German partner reports the federal government’s 2013 lift of a longstanding ban on long-distance motorcoach travel continues to change the national transportation scene in Deutschland. In a country where trains were once the preferred form of transport, bus networks are expanding rapidly. Most tickets are sold online, and the German public is taking to buses in large numbers. German media also likes the new modus, and bus travel is getting favorable and frequent coverage. More buses on the streets and highways mean more competitors for business, Seitz said. “You see a lot more buses, and many of them are in continued on next page 29 I N T E R N AT I O N A L N E W S 2 0 1 5 ISSUE shocking colors,” said Seitz. “Most are new and fully equipped with Wi-Fi and kitchens. People love them because they are a cheaper mode of travel than trains, even though they are usually slower. An average —Helmut Seitz price bus ticket is about 30 percent less than the price of a train ticket. Also, besides being more expensive now, our trains are old now and below standard. The Hamburg to Berlin route is most popular, with more than 20 lines going each day with double-decker coaches that are fully booked.” “You see a lot more buses and many of them are in shocking colors. Most are new and fully equipped with Wi-Fi and kitchens. People love them because they are cheaper travel than trains… The long-distance market explosion is bringing competitive prices that are too low for good profitability, Seitz said. “Prices are too low per passenger, and this gives us a challenge with earning profits,” he said. “Some companies, 30 including one English bus company, have quit the business recently. And we find it challenging on other fronts. It’s difficult to get drivers, and because the long-distance coaches are cheap, groups are taking those instead of booking charters, even if they are more than 30 people. Before, they chartered a bus for more than 15 people because trains were so expensive.” Z Netherlands News: Report from Martyn Besselsen, President, ElboBus Trailways, the Netherlands: This year’s beginning of the World War I centenary, and the 70th anniversary of D-Day has brought significant business growth to Trailways’ Netherlands partner. “Fortunately this remembrance time will continue until the 70th anniversary for the liberation of Europe in 2015, and we already have a number of groups booked. Because ElboBus business moves with world events good and bad, there was also a negative impact in 2014 by developments like the destruction of Malaysia flight MH117. Besselsen said there were many cancellations for Chinese youth charters around that event. “Many bus companies offer exactly the same service that we do,” he continued, “so one has to think outside of the box to stand out. For Dutch school groups, we recently introduced a personal tour assistant named “Ella.” Ella is just a nickname for all our agents who answer the phone with ‘Hello, this is Ella, how can I help you?’ Ella is providing free service for booking hotels, cruises, city guides, etc. What’s funny is that we already offered this free service, but it was taken for granted. Now with Ella, we have noticed an increase in the number of requests and bookings for short and long school tours to popular European destinations.” ElboBus is also involved in operating a summer youth camp with 1,000 beds and an activity park. It’s a package deal that comes with bus charters and has been very successful for the company. Besselsen said he has decided to purchase a nearby amusement park that had closed that he will turn into a Family Entertainment Center. “This kind of thing is unknown in Europe,” he said. “We have calculated that this will work in our area, and we’re sure we’ll get substantial benefit from it for our bus charter services. The line run plans to provide interconnectivity with Greyhound at both ends of the routes in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada. “Silver State Trailways looks to extend transportation options to these communities increasing resident mobility, economic opportunity and quality of life,” said company President, Tony Fiorini. Z Capital Trailways Works with AMTRAK® A n expanded partnership was launched in August 2014 between AMTRAK, the US national intercity passenger railroad system, and two bus carriers, Greyhound Lines and Capital Trailways (AL). The service can take passengers via bus to and from the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to Amtrak trains in Jackson, MS, Tuscaloosa, AL and New Orleans, LA. The move puts several cities back on the AMTRAK map post-Hurricane Katrina. Several of these Gulf Coast communities, including Biloxi and Mobile, were served by AMTRAK until 2005, when the service was suspended east of New Orleans due to the storm. Thomas Fletcher, president, Capital and Colonial Trailways, said, “We have already noticed an increase in ridership with the AMTRAK connection, and it was just put in place last summer (2014). Wayne Phillips, CEO, 32 Capital and Colonial Trailways, added, “This is a valuable service connection for the residents in our Western Alabama service area.” AMTRAK said it is analyzing its national network to identify more opportunities to form partnerships with other bus carriers to expand connectivity, increase ridership and provide additional intercity travel options for more communities. The new 2015 J4500 offers a ride like no other. ©2014 MCI The difference begins with a new ZF independent front suspension that drives like a dream and rides smooth as silk, with a turning radius that’s nearly seven feet tighter than before. Just as impressive is the new Bendix braking system that delivers car-like control, along with an optional collision mitigation feature that keeps drivers and passengers firmly in the safety zone. The one component we wouldn’t dream of changing? Our reliability. It’s why North American coach owners choose MCI coaches above all others, and depend on us for excellence in service and parts.
