Winter fun on the Kaunergrat. Snowy woods, glittering meadows, frozen
streams and animal tracks in the snow – the Kaunergrat nature reserve has
compiled a winter programme offering one fantastic experience after the other! Once again, the nature reserve will be inviting local residents and visitors
to enjoy the fascination of this year’s winter inside its grounds from the end of
December to mid-March. The entire Kaunergrat region beckons in all its winter
splendour: with snowy woods, glittering meadows, frozen streams and animal
tracks in the snow! It’s a superb opportunity to get out into the great outdoors
together with mountain hiking guides, biologists, hunters and local farmers in
search of winter magic! Choose from going on a snowshoe hike through the
winter landscape (this year with new routes), watching wild animals at feeding
time, gasping at the beauty of Christmas cribs, taking a cable car up to starry
skies or hurtling downhill on a horned
sledge… Kaunergrat nature reserve offers you all this and more in winter! Excursions during the season take place on a
weekly basis. The programme is available
from the nature reserve office or Pitztal
tourist board. Alternatively, please visit
www.kaunergrat.at for more information.

views from the Gachen Blick as well as insights into the marvellous features of
the Kaunergrat nature reserve. The nature reserve house is intended to symbolise the nine affiliated local authorities since it lies at the intersection between the Kaunertal, Pitztal and Inntal. The amazing assets of the region
around the nature reserve are all portrayed in this building. This is where the
idea behind the Kaunergrat nature reserve becomes tangible in the complete
sense of the word for visitors and local residents. The Kaunergrat nature reserve house is a modern wooden structure containing an information area, a
nature reserve exhibition, a restaurant as well as the offices of the nature park
authority. A particular highlight
is definitely the magnificent
view of the Piller Sattel. The
Gachen Blick has fascinated and
attracted people for thousands
of years. The Kaunergrat nature
reserve house at the Piller Sattel
acts as an information centre
and service facility for visitors
interested in nature and culture. This place will move you!
This is the place to get information on outstanding beauty spots,
hiking trails and culinary specialities, etc.
This is the place to marvel at an extraordinary exhibition about the
diversity of the Kaunergrat nature reserve!
This is the place to enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding
mountain chains!
We look forward to seeing you over here!
Exhibition: open daily from 10 am to 6 pm
Restaurant: open from 9 am to 9 pm

THE STONE PINE EXHIBITION
The stone pine village
amidst Kaunergrat Nature Park. Nestled in between captivating and majestic mountains, Jerzens
is a quaint mountain village
in the heart of the picturesque Pitztal Valley. The
Stone Pine woodlands that
surround Jerzens have
been a symbol of alpine
magnificence for centuries. The tree acts as the first barrier to protect forests
and valley against avalanches of snow and scree, is used to make furniture and
carved objects and has beneficial effects on human health and wellbeing.
Generations of people in the village of Jerzens have been living in peaceful
coexistence and friendship with the Stone Pine - and do so today.
The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner Knobby and gnarled,
a tough tree resists destructive natural forces that rage in high mountains.
Branches break under heavy snow, the tree’s crown may be hit by lightning, trunks are often split in half, exposing wood to biting cold. But the
tree remains steadfast and withstands these extreme conditions. It bravely
battles the elements life-long. It’s the Stone Pine.
The Exhibition The Stone Pine - A Gifted Alpine Border-Liner exhibition takes you on a fascinating journey of discovery through the intricate
life of the Stone Pine. The growth and development of this tree is one of
the most spectacular events in nature. The exhibition reveals that Stone
Pines and humans have a lot in common and allows visitors to observe
some of the most important life stages of the tree, from seed to tree, from
tiny tot to golden age, and several phases in between. Moreover, you will
learn about the wide-ranging uses of Stone Pine wood and its amazing
health-promoting properties. At the cinema you can see the Stone Pine in
breathtaking 3D.
MILL IN THE HAMLET OF ARZL-RIED
This Sleeping Beauty of an 18th century grain mill was awakened from its
age-long slumber by a dedicated group of mill enthusiasts. It is widely regarded as a technical monument to the centuries-old tradition of milling
grain in the Alpine regions and can be visited on request (Helene Schrott:
+43(0)5412-65049).
MILL IN JERZENS AND MILK PIPELINE
21
(only open for visits during the summer months) The mill was built by local
farmers in 1862 and renovated in 1985 by the local authority in association
with the ‘Tanzalpe’ farming association – the mill’s walkway even dates back
to the year 1862. It can be visited each day of the week during the summer
months and bread is baked there once a week.
The mill also features a milk collection centre - laid in 1957, the 3 km milk pipeline runs from the Jerzner Alm (Tanzalm) and is still used today.
