Projekt: Unser Restaurant
Schritt 1: Was für ein Restaurant wollen wir?
Are you interest in a café-style restaurant with outdoor seating or a fast-food restaurant
for business people? a carry-out place at the beach? an after-ski coffee shop? Will your
restaurant be small or large? casual or elegant? What type of customers are you looking
to attract? (Familien? Schüler oder Studenten? Touristen? Senioren?). Wann ist das
Restaurant geöffnet? Täglich oder habt ihr einen Ruhetag? Von wann bis wann?
Schritt 2: Wie heiΒt unser Restaurant?
Brainstorm a list of adjectives in German that would describe your restaurant and attract
the type of customers you seek. Work with your partner to invent a clever German name
for your restaurant. Check out www.dict.leo.org. Keep it simple. You could make a
single compound noun and be quite clever.
Schritt 3: Wo ist unser Restaurant? You must find a specific (real!) site within the
German-speaking countries for your restaurant and include a map showing its location.
Wie kommen die Leute in euer Restaurant? Is there a stop for public transit nearby? Mark
the Haltestelle or bus/tram/metro stop on your map.
Gibt es Parkplätze?
Schritt 4: Die Spezialität des Hauses
Many restaurants have a few specialty items on their menus that are customer favorites.
Locations near a forest, for example, may feature mushroom dishes and game, such as
venison and wild boar. Decide with your partner on a “specialty of the house,” taking into
account your restaurant’s location and traditional specialties for that region.
Hausaufgabe (due by Dienstag, der 22. Oktober)
- Draw a map of your restaurant’s location, labeling landmarks, geographical
features, streets, and (if applicable) nearest subway, bus or tram stop—all in
German of course! Mark the exact location of your restaurant.
- Write a brief description in your own German of your restaurant’s location,
including important geographical markers. Explain why you chose the location.
Remember that online translation is strictly prohibited.
- In case your customers ask, know a couple of the basic ingredients of your house
specialty, in German and English.
Language help
Work with authentic (German-language) sources to develop a menu that looks and
sounds German. You may not use any English-language sites for this project. But do use
dict.leo.org to check any essential words you cannot figure out from context.

Schritt 5: Die Speisekarte
Schritt 1: Was wollen wir servieren?
Consulting your Speisen vocab lists and the web, come up with 2-4 dishes for each
category on the menu. Keep in mind the type of restaurant and location you have chosen.
Die Kategorien sind:
Vorspeisen und Beilagen, Hauptgerichte/Hauptspeisen (Spezialität des Hauses
und zwei andere), Getränke, Nachspeisen
Schritt 2: Preise festlegen. To appeal to tourists or business people from the U.S., provide
prices in both U.S. dollars and the local currency—euro or Schweizer Franken.
- Consider how much you want to charge for your food and beverages, and assign
prices in dollars to your menu items.
- Using an international currency converter on the web (e.g., www.xe.com), look
up the current rate of exchange for the euro / Schweizer Franken.
- List your menu prices in the local currency as well as in dollars.
- Example: If a dollar is worth $.79 euro, than a $2.00 cup of coffee would cost
1.58 Euro in Austria or Germany. Round up to the nearest tens of cents to set the
local price. Example above: € 1.60 for your $2.00 cup of coffee. List both prices
in your menu: €1,60/$2.00.
Schritt 3: Speisekarte schreiben!
- Make a menu using papers, pencils and markers, or design it on the computer. If using a
computer design, select a program/format that you can access at home and at school. This
may mean sticking the most basic program in google chrome.
