People at the European Football Championships 2004
Conversation A
Reporter: Hello. You’re on your way to the stadium?
Fan:
Sure. We’re just going to get something to drink first. Look at us – everybody is
dressed in orange shirts and orange scarves. Do you think we want to take part
in the Portuguese carnival?
Reporter: Not really; I just wondered why you’ve got drums and trumpets with you.
Conversation B
Reporter: Excuse me, Sir. Are you going to see one of the matches?
Male:
Well, actually I am. I’ve purchased tickets for the first semi-final. I’m going to take
my family to see it.
Reporter: So you’ve just come over for the match?
Male:
No, tomorrow we’re off to the beach for two weeks. Maybe later on we’ll spend a
weekend with our relatives.

Conversation C
Reporter: Madam, you don’t look like a football fan at all.
Female:
No, definitely not. I must admit I’m not particularly interested in seeing any of the
matches.
Reporter: So why have you come to Lisbon? Are you on holiday?
Female:
I wish I was! I’m here as the sales representative of a sports equipment
company from Germany.
Reporter: Oh, that sounds interesting. …
Conversation D
Reporter: Oh, here are some young supporters of the English team. Excuse me, where are
you going to?
Young
We’re on our way to the town centre. That’s where the party is.
male:
Reporter: So it’s not only about football?

An Interview with David Beckham
Interviewer: David, lots of English football fans are still very sad that you’ve left Manchester
United. Could you tell us why you joined Real Madrid?
Beckham:
Well, Victoria was getting bored with England because we weren’t getting
enough attention. I tried to convince her that we should stay, I even got a new
hair style done, but …
Interviewer: You mean…?
Beckham:
No, I’m joking. It was a unique chance to play in a real dream team. Players
like Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo – they’re just brilliant.
Interviewer: I see! You’ve just mentioned your hair style, David. Obviously looks seem to be
very important for you.
Beckham:
Absolutely - I like to look good when I play.
Interviewer: But isn’t it a model’s job to look good at work? I thought a footballer’s job would
be to play football! Look at Paul Scholes – he isn’t a beauty, but he’s a fantastic
footballer and he scores important goals for England.
Beckham:
Right, but I’m the England captain and if kids look up to me and want to be like
me, that’s fine. I’m permanently in the public eye, you know.
Interviewer: As captain of the English team: what do you think of Wayne Rooney, England’s
new football “boy wonder”?
Beckham:
Well, Wayne is the youngest player who ever got into the national team. He’s
an extremely talented goal-getter. I’m sure he’ll make his way, but at his age he
still has to learn how to cope with so much pressure.
Interviewer: Back to you, David. Quite a lot of people are a bit jealous: you get millions of
pounds, make big sponsorship deals – and you’re married to Posh Spice! You
seem to have it all.
Beckham:
Maybe, you’re right, but sometimes I wish I wasn’t so famous. Everybody
knows they planned to kidnap Victoria and the boys – that was a terrible shock!
Since then we’ve had to worry about security all the time. It’s making life more
and more difficult, you see. …

A Live Report
“Welcome everybody out there sitting by your radios. It’s the evening all the BBC listeners
and the 55,000 spectators here in the stadium have been waiting for: the kick-off for
England’s first match against France. It has been a lovely day here in Lisbon with
temperatures around 22° Celsius - ideal weather conditions for such an important game.
My studio guest tonight is Gary Lineker, the former England goal-getter, who has played in
dozens of international games. Hello Gary.” “Hi Mike.”
“My first question tonight, Gary: Will we see an aggressive England or a hesitant start with a
strong defence? How do you think Erikson prepared the team?”
“Actually, Mike, I’m convinced we will see neither nor. I think the coach will have told them to
play carefully but also to strike quickly whenever there is a chance.”
“OK. Gary, we’ll see what happens because here’s the kick-off: From the first moment on it
seems that England are already trying to attack their opponents in midfield. Neville steals the
ball from number 7; over to Beckham, an excellent long pass to Owen; Owen’s past his
opponent, he’s in the penalty area, Owen hammers the ball past the goalie and … The ball’s
in the net! Goal!!! One nil for England! What a start! What a superb move by Beckham and
Owen! …”

Hello. EURO 2004 ticket service. This is Ann Price speaking. How can I help
you?
Hello. My name’s Arthur Knowles. Can you tell me if there are any tickets left
for the semi-finals or the final?
Hmm. I’m afraid they’re all sold out, but there are still some seats left for the
quarter-finals.
Sounds great! I would need four tickets. How much would a ticket for the
quarter-finals be?
They are category 1 tickets, which means £94.40 for the ticket itself and an
additional £9.40 for all the fees.
Uh. Over a hundred pounds! Just for one ticket? That’s a fortune! Aren’t
there any cheaper seats available?
Well, Mr Knowles, I’m afraid not for the quarter-finals. … Oh, wait a minute –
there are some leftover tickets for the quarter-final in Porto – they’re tickets
in the third category.
How much are they?
These ones are £30.80 including £2.80 for the fees.
OK. That’s much better. When exactly is the match?
It’s on 27th June. The kick–off is at 19.45.
Fine. Can you recommend any hotels in Porto?
Let me see. There’s a nice three star hotel not too far from the stadium. If
you wish, I can give you the name and the phone number.
Brilliant!

A top hotel for a top team
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome back to our daily report from
EURO 2004. Today we are at Sintra, the favourite summer residence of the
Portuguese kings for centuries. Nowadays it attracts thousands of tourists
throughout the year with its historic buildings and beautiful scenery. Right behind
me there’s an 18th century palace which now serves as a five-star hotel. Mr
Miguel Ferreira is the hotel manager who’s agreed to answer some questions.
It’s a pleasure to have you here.
During the European Championships your hotel is fully booked and one of the
top teams is staying here. Can you tell us why your hotel is so popular?
Well, I think, first of all, most of our guests like the beautiful park which covers an
area of almost 5 acres.
And you offer luxurious accommodation, I suppose.
Of course. We have tried to create a pleasant atmosphere by combining modern
comfort and spectacular décor. All our rooms have air-conditioning, king-size
beds, satellite TV, wireless Internet access, a self-service bar and last but not
least a balcony with deckchairs.
Sounds marvellous! What other services does your hotel offer?
Inside the hotel we have three restaurants, a cocktail bar and a piano bar, an
Internet café and a hairdresser’s. Our guests can shop at our exclusive
boutiques; they can use our fully-equipped workout room, relax in the health club
with its sauna and swim in our heated pool. In the park surrounding the hotel
there is a golf course and a small practice ground where you can play all sorts of
ball games.
Sounds like an ideal place for keeping fit, particularly for a football team. But
what about the food? Let’s peep into the chef’s pots and ask him a few
questions. Hello Antonio.
Hello.
Antonio, I’ve always wondered what football stars eat before an important match.
Light cuisine is the magic word. Pasta with fat-reduced sauces and fresh salads
are served as a typical diet.
Delicious. But what about meat?
It’s also part of the menu, but of course there must not be too much fat on it.
Are you allowed to serve any desserts?
No problem if they aren’t too filling. Have a look. Today I’ve prepared fresh fruit
with a little bit of low fat cream. And tomorrow … (FADE)

Thank you for listening. We wish you all the best for the next part of your final exams.
