WELCOME
Together with the Specialty Show Committee, I would like to welcome you to the 2016 BMDCA National Specialty
in Frankenmuth. The “Michigan Berner Classic” theme, what a combination, classic cars with our beautiful Bernese
Mountain Dogs… classic!
The 2016 committee has been working to provide our guests a week of socializing, competition, learning, fun,
shopping and friendship. There is something for everyone, no matter what your interests are. In addition to
Conformation, Sweepstakes, Veterans Sweepstakes, and Futurity, we are offering four Draft Tests, Obedience,
Rally, Agility, Tracking, and Herding!
Berner U is not to be missed, there is always a great schedule of classes! Who doesn’t learn something from the
variety of classes offered?! What a way to start the week! We will also be offering more Canine Good Citizen
opportunities this year with CGC, CGCA, and CGCU.
We are trying a few new ideas. First, for those of you that will be in Frankenmuth on Sunday, we are planning on a
“stroll with your dog” in Frankenmuth. Look for details in the planning book. Also, a “Titleholders Gallery” will be
located in the Kern Pavilion! This way the entered dogs can be honored all week! We’d also like to encourage our
juniors to participate in the new Versatile Juniors recognition program.
Our host hotel, the Bavarian Inn Lodge, is very family friendly, with several pools and arcades. Jellystone Park, for
those who will be camping, is only ½ mile from all events. The hotel and the town of Frankenmuth have a very
Bavarian feel. The area is very walkable with so many shops and restaurants available. That is if you can fit it all in
to your schedule!
Heritage Park is adjacent to the hotel, a couple of hundred-yard walk. There will also be a shuttle available to get
you to the park and Bavarian Inn Restaurant downtown. Herding and Tracking will be the only events off site, each
are about one hour south of Frankenmuth. All other Conformation and Performance events will be at Heritage
Park, and all events are outside. This is May in Michigan, the weather can vary day by day, please plan on layers!

We are so looking forward to hosting the BMDCA and all of our guests! My very first National Specialty was here in
2006 with my first Berner, 6 month old Maggie. I remember the sight of berners everywhere… a man in
lederhosen along with his dog pulling a cart… and I was HOOKED!! I hope this year provides you with many
memories as well! Safe travels as you make your way to Frankenmuth and the Michigan Berner Classic.

TRAVEL INFORMATION
From the North: Take I-75 exit 149A (M-46, E Holland Rd) toward Sandusky. Turn south on M-83 (also S
Gera Rd), which turns into N Main Street, Frankenmuth. Turn left onto Covered Bridge Lane to the Bavarian
Inn Lodge and Heritage Park
From the South: Take I-75 exit 136 (Birch Run). Travel east on Birch Run Rd to Dehmel Rd and turn north,
which turns into S Main Street, Frankenmuth. Slight right at Bronners (can’t miss this famous Christmas
store!!) onto Weiss Street. This will take you to the Bavarian Lodge and Heritage Park.
Suggested Airports:
Flint (FTN) - 28 miles, approximately 32 minutes drive to Frankenmuth
Saginaw (MBS) - 30 miles, approximately 41 minutes drive to Frankenmuth
Lansing (LAN) - 80 miles, approximately 1 hour 18 minutes drive to Frankenmuth
Detroit Metro (DTW) - 100 miles, approximately 1 hour 35 minutes drive to Frankenmuth

ACCOMMODATIONS
HOST HOTEL

Our host hotel, the Bavarian Inn Lodge, is located in the quaint village of Frankenmuth. This village began as a
German community in 1845. The community continues to maintain and celebrate its Bavarian heritage with
European themed shops and restaurants. The Lodge is still owned by the Zehnder family who emigrated from
Germany in 1846. The Bavarian Inn's motif, accented by a fifty-foot-high Glockenspiel, echoes Frankenmuth's
heritage. All performance and conformation events (with the exception of Tracking and Herding) will be held
outdoors at Frankenmuth’s Heritage Park. This city park is directly adjacent to the hotel property and the
conformation rings will be about 600 feet from the hotel. Both the hotel grounds and park are on the banks of
the Cass River and there is a tremendous amount of space to walk your dogs. Downtown Frankenmuth is
easily accessible by walking or driving across the 234-foot wooden covered bridge. For more information on

Housekeeping & Guests with Dog(s):
Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Conference center area of the hotel. This includes Berner
University classes as well as the photo contest and rescue gallery areas.
Please keep in mind that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find properties suitable to host this event. We
ask your cooperation in leaving all hotel rooms and other areas clean, neat, and tidy. Additionally, we expect
everyone to always be gracious to hotel staff and management. The show committee will be in daily contact
with the housekeeping staff to monitor situations that require intervention. We expect our exhibitors to be
responsible guests. Participants who do not comply with hotel rules will be required to vacate the premises
immediately.
There shall be no saving of parking lot spaces and parking is NOT allowed on the grass at the
Bavarian Inn Lodge and Convention Center or Heritage Park.
The Lodge will provide a list of rules to guests with dog(s) at check-in. There will be a $100 damage deposit
due upon check-in from the principle occupant of each room with a dog(s). Rooms will be inspected daily by

the Lodge housekeeping department for damages. A final inspection will be completed at time of check out,
once all the guests belongings are removed from the guestroom. The DEPOSIT will be refunded, minus a $30
fee, in the event the room does not need "deep cleaning" and there are no damages to the room. If no human
in the room, dogs are to be crated at all times. Plastic is required under all crates (will be supplied by the
Lodge along with a sheet for bed). Dogs must be on a leash when walking and are not allowed in the pool
area, near any food service outlet or the Convention Center. No bathing or grooming of dogs in guest rooms.
Offenders are subject to eviction, forfeiting any refund of deposit. The use of hotel towels for pets is
prohibited and no grooming is allowed in any public areas inside the Lodge. A bathing area will be provided
outside (no towels).

HOSPITALITY & CONCESSIONS
Morning hospitality Tuesday through Saturday will be provided at the Lion Haus, conveniently located in
Heritage Park near all events. Complimentary continental breakfast items will be offered, and there may be
hot breakfast options available for purchase. The Lions Club of Frankenmuth will also be offering lunch
concessions with their menu changing daily. The Bavarian Inn Lodge also offers many lunch options.
RV PARKING & CAMPING INFORMATION
There will be a designated area of the host hotel parking lot where RVs may be parked. City laws prohibit
overnight camping in any RV within the Frankenmuth city limits. Dogs may stay in RVs
overnight, but people may not. Local police will be monitoring parking areas.
Frankenmuth Jellystone Park is only 1/2 mile from Heritage Park and the Bavarian Inn Lodge and is very pet
and human friendly! The street address is 1339 Weiss Street, Frankenmuth MI 48734. When placing a
reservation, please reference the BMDCA National Specialty to receive the special rates indicated below. A one
night deposit will be required when placing a reservation.
Reservations can be made online at www.frankenmuthjellystone.com or by telephone at (989) 652-6668.
Full hook-up sites at the group rate are $46 per night Sunday through Thursday, and $51 per night Friday and
Saturday. Water/electric only sites, at the group rate, $43 Sunday through Thursday, and $48 per night Friday
and Saturday.
SUNDAY STROLL THROUGH RIVER PLACE SHOPS
We are holding an informal stroll through the River Place Shops on Sunday, May 1st, to kick off our festivities
in Frankenmuth, Michigan. We will gather in the parking lot behind the River Place Shops at 3:00pm and will
start the stroll at 3:30pm.
You can have your dog pull a cart and practice drafting, or simply walk them on a leash. Decorated carts and
dogs are welcomed—have fun and meet fellow Bernese owners while showing off our dogs to the residents
and visitors of Frankenmuth. NO REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY, come join in the fun!
SHUTTLE SERVICE
A shuttle service pass is offered through Master Registration for $5. The shuttle service will be available
between Heritage Park and the Bavarian Inn Lodge. Requests to go to the Bavarian Inn Restaurant (on Main
Street) will be honored as time allows. The shuttle service pass gives you access to this service and, of course,
dogs are allowed on the shuttle. Hot Rod Club members will receive a FREE shuttle service pass!
Shuttle service passes will be available at registration for $10 CASH ONLY.

Please consider featuring your special Berner, product, or regional club in the 2016 National Specialty Catalog!
It’s a wonderful way to reach a large number of Bernese Mountain Dog enthusiasts in the US and abroad.
Introduce your latest Champion, show off your new puppy and/or next generation of Berners, brag about
your dog’s accomplishments in breed/performance rings, pay tribute to your veteran dog, or honor events
and/or BMD-related products and services.
The deadline for ad submissions (both camera-ready and ads requiring design assistance) is March 19th to
insure there is adequate time to get your approval and to incorporate your ad in the overall catalog design
layout.
There will be an additional $10 fee for ads that are not submitted in camera-ready format.
Ads submitted after the deadline may be refused or charged a late fee of up to 30%. Ad Sizes & Rates

Ad Specifications
 Berner-Garde numbers and names are required for specific dogs featured in ads.
 Full page ad size is 4½" wide x 7 3/16" tall (this also applies for each page of a two page spread).
 Half page ad size is 4½" wide x 3 9/16" tall.
 All ads will be printed in black and white/grayscale format and must be submitted as “Camera Ready”.
 Acceptable submission formats: pdf or jpg (minimum 200 dpi). If you submit in pdf format and the fonts
that you use in your ad in are not available to the Superintendent, the fonts will be changed to the closest
match available.
Ads must be paid in full by the March 19th deadline. Ads not paid in full by the deadline will not appear
in the catalog. There will be NO REFUNDS.

CATALOG SALES
Catalogs can be pre-ordered on the Master Registration form for $20 or purchased on-site for $22. Catalogs
mailed after the show with a copy of all placements can also be ordered on the Master Registration form for
$32.
DOG FOOD AND SUPPLIES
There are several stores within a reasonable drive to the show site that carry many brands of dog food.
Attendees may contact Lynn Nelson at BernerMom585@aol.com to ask questions related to finding dog food
needed during the specialty. Additionally, please watch the specialty website for up-to-date information as to
which stores may be delivering to the hotel.
RAFFLE
Raffles are a huge part of the fun of any specialty! We rely upon lots of wonderful donated prizes every year to
reach our goal. Theme baskets are always popular, whether filled with state or regional foods and souvenirs,
regional club clothing, grooming tools and supplies from local vendors, or dog toys and treats. Other popular
items include drafting, agility, obedience and herding equipment, crates, dog show needs (travel crates,
dollies, portable chairs), anything Swiss (collars, leads, clothing, clocks, antique bells, horns), dog beds,
grooming tables, tubs and dryers, dog portraits, books, gift certificates for national chain stores or
restaurants, and "Bernerabilia" of all sorts.
Please consider making a donation to the raffle – on your own or joining forces with friends, local club
members, or training groups. Not feeling creative? – we’ll gladly accept your cash donations. Monetary
donations can be included on the Master Registration or sent separately, made payable to BMDCA 2016.
Contributions of all sizes are greatly appreciated! If you are sending a donated item, please notify us in

HOT ROD CLUB
As we get ready for the road trip to Frankenmuth, please consider joining our Hot Rod Club!. Like at many
classic car shows, Hot Rod Club members will receive a commemorative dash plaque at registration. There will
be many other perks through the weeks as well … including a FREE shuttle service pass. To qualify for the
Hot Rod Club:
Choose any combination of the following valued at or totaling at least $150: (all items subject to verification)
 Donate at least $50 to the general specialty fund
 Place an ad in the Specialty catalog
 Sponsor a trophy or donate at least $50 to the general trophy fund

the raffle

BMDCA BUSINESS MEETINGS
Monday, May 2, 2016, 8:00am ~ The In Person Meeting of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of
America, Inc. (BMDCA) Board of Directors will be held in the Mosell Room of the Bavarian Inn Lodge and
Convention Center, Frankenmuth, Michigan, on Monday, May 2, 2016, beginning promptly at 8:00am.

Specialty to effect greater communication between the clubs, Board, and membership. The agenda will be

Friday, May 6, 2016, 8:00pm ~ The Annual Meeting of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of
America, Inc. (BMDCA) will be held in the Composer Rooms of the Bavarian Inn Lodge and Convention
Center, Frankenmuth, Michigan on Friday, May 6, 2016, beginning at 8pm or shortly thereafter. Seats will be
provided for those not attending the banquet beforehand.

LONGSHOTS
The 2016 Committee is pleased to announce that LONGSHOTS will be in Frankenmuth. Pat Long and helpers
will be hard at work Tuesday through Friday to take great portraits of your dog(s) to raise money for Berner
charities.
For the suggested donation of $50.00, you will receive approximately 25 photos of your dog(s), a CD copy of
all the photos, and a print of at least one of them. All of the money will go to Bernese Mountain Dog charities;
Longshots donates all of the services and materials. No reservations are needed; it's first come, first served,
although elderly or ill dogs jump to the front of the line.
Longshots portrait photos make a perfect gift for Mother's Day, birthdays, a thank you gift to your breeder, or
simply a gift to yourself to enjoy. Be sure to drop by! Longshots will be located in the CEC building, in close
proximity to grooming, conformation, and vendors.
VENDORS
We offer premium booth spaces to commercial vendors outside. Vendor tenting (provided) will be around the
show ring. Commercial booth spaces are 10’ x 10’. Tables may be shared if so desired. All booths require a 4day minimum stay, starting Monday, May 2 and running through Saturday, May 7, 2016. Preference will be
given to longer reservations, if space becomes limited. No refund will be made for “no shows” or for fewer
days. Set-up can begin on Sunday, May 1 at noon. The vendor tents must be vacated by 5 pm on Saturday,

Your help is needed in filling the enormous amount of ring favors, trophies, and rosettes for the 2016 National

HEALTH AUCTION
We’re in the first turn of the endurance race in prepation for the 2016 Health Auction! Please mark your
calendar for Thursday, May 5th. The Health Auction is an art show, Berner blast, and comedy show rolled into
one. We will have both a Live and Silent Auction, as well as a Raffle. Our pit crew has been gathering items, so
come buy your newest Berner bauble and make a memory at this important event.
A pizza buffet will be available in Master Registration. The buffet will be available from 6:00-7:15pm, with the
Auction beginning at 7:30pm. Cash bar opens at 6:00pm. Feed your body at the pizza buffet, your spirit with
new treasures, and your heart with the knowledge that the money benefits Berners. Help drop the checkered
flag on cancer and other genetic disorders. This event helps fund the work that will increase longevity and
health in our beloved Berners.
The BMDCA Health Auction proceeds will be accepted by the Berner-Garde Foundation, and will be fully tax
deductible as allowed by IRS regulations. All proceeds from the Health Auction will go toward funding healthrelated projects as recommended by The BMDCA Health Committee and as approved by the BMDCA Board.
The BMDCA Health Auction proceeds will be held in a restricted fund and governed by a Fiscal Sponsorship
Agreement between the BMDCA and Berner-Garde Foundation.
It will be a night of dazzling displays of Berner treasures, and we are still receiving amazing donations. Any

INTERNATIONAL GUEST RECEPTION
Welcome to all Foreign Guests! The BMDCA will host an informal get together in the Brahms Room, 2nd floor, with
our international attendees in order to socialize and introduce ourselves on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7:00am. We will
enjoy a light breakfast while we share information about drafting. We ask that you be prepared to share
information about drafting in your country. A short introduction to the US show procedures will be followed by a
“Question & Answer” session. We will also arrange for ringside mentors to be available during Wednesday’s Futurity
judging to provide explanations of show procedures for any foreign guests desiring a mentor. US BMDCA members
who wish to mingle with our guests at the reception are most welcome, but will be required to pay a small fee. See

The Fan Award will be awarded at the Awards Banquet to the oldest male and
female dog exhibited at the Specialty, including the veterans parade. The award
is offered by Friends of the Fan Award in loving memory of "Fan" Camelot's
Fantasy and Meg Auger, who sponsored the award from 2003-2015.
Triathlete Challenge
Are you and your dog a multi-tasking team?
Set your sights on the Specialty Triathlete Challenge!
The Specialty Triathlete Award is given at the Awards Banquet to EACH berner/
handler team who earns a qualifying leg or passing score in three or more different working venues. Yes, you
can do it all! The eligible events are tracking (all classes), herding (JHD or higher), rally (regular classes only),
obedience (regular classes only—novice, open, utility), agility (all classes), and draft (all classes). Only one
score or performance in each venue will count towards this award. The performance must be at the regular
titling level (Novice level or higher, JHD or higher for herding), although the dog/handler team may have
already earned the relevant title. If your dog can pull, heel, sniff, run, and jump—just pick your venues and
go for the gold! The Specialty Triathlete Awards will be something to treasure. Award offered by Ruth

PHOTO CONTEST
A picture is worth a thousand words. Tell your story about the wonderful characters in your lives - the princesses and
poets, adventurers, and clowns. Not all stories have happy endings, so we need your help to raise funds to benefit
BMDCA Berner Rescue. Agree to donate your photo, and your artwork will be used to change lives. The highestplacing donated photos in each category will be silently auctioned during the week, with the winners announced at
the Annual Meeting. Other donated photos will be displayed at the meeting and available for $20. Proceeds after
expenses will go to Berner Rescue.
Categories
Berner Puppies – Every great story has a beginning; share the cuteness, we know you’re dying to.
Veteran Berners – They’ve been with us for awhile, give them the honor they deserve.
Black & White – Some characters are best portrayed in stark relief of black and white.
Car Berners - You know they live to travel, so show us your Berner with your Cruisin’ machine.
Working Berners – Working class heroes hard at work, be it herding, agility, rally, therapy, conformation, etc.
Berners & Kids – Kids and dogs are meant to be, so show us your best and funniest examples.
Winter Berners – We all know they like the snow & cold, so show us your Berner in winter.
Digital Artwork - With a few clicks of the mouse, your photo can become a watercolor, a mosaic, or cartoon.
Your imagination is the only limiting factor, so let it run free and go wild, but we still need to see the Berner.
Judging & Prizes
The People’s Choice award will be decided by popular vote and announced at the Awards Banquet. All other awards
will be decided by a panel of judges. In addition to a rosette for Best in Show and People’s Choice. Prizes awarded
will be a digital camera for Best in Show, a Berner artwork for People’s Choice, and a 32GB SD memory card for 1st
place in each category.

Entry fees are $10 for the first photo and $6 for each additional entry (per person). There is no entry limit. All checks

showmanship, ring etiquette, and good sportsmanship, and will teach a personal handling seminar. Even if

Female RESCUE GALLERY
It is time once again to celebrate our rescued Berners. Regardless of whether your Berner
was rescued by a regional club, private group, or individual they have a vital spot in the
Rescue Gallery. Regardless of whether your Berner came from a puppy mill, broker, online site, abandonment, or other bad situation their story needs to be told by you.
In 2006, the Rescue Gallery replaced the Rescue Parade as an annual celebration at each
National Specialty. From 2006 through 2014, the Rescue Gallery was chaired by Nell Ward.
We so appreciate her founding efforts in this regard.
Owners do not need to attend to participate in the Rescue Gallery, but will be required to go
through Master Registration. If you are not attending, have someone pick up your welcome bag. Even
those dogs who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge may be honored. The Rescue Gallery will be prominently
displayed at the 2016 Frankenmuth, Michigan specialty. A story book will also be printed that contains the
same pictures and stories on display for those entered, those entered but not attending, and for individual
purchase.
The cost to enter your Rescue Berner is just $25. Each entry will receive a pin personalized with your dog’s call
name, a yellow bandana that will clearly identify each Rescue Gallery participant, and of course, the story
book. If you would prefer to receive the storybook only, the entry fee is $15. If not attending the specialty,
please add $5 to help cover the cost to ship your entry materials to you. Storybooks will be available for sale at
the specialty for $5.

Essential Education returns to Michigan! We are pleased to offer thought
provoking classes on a broad array of subjects taught by distinguished canine
professionals and experienced BMDCA members. Complete class descriptions and

 The Berner U registration fee is $40 per person. This allows you to attend
unlimited seminars and workshops for two days and to receive handouts for all classes.

Cardiac Clinic: Board certified veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Rob Sanders, will be available to perform cardiac
evaluations using auscultation (a non-invasive procedure). OFA requires dogs be at least one year of age
when examined to receive cardiac clearance. Fee: $40
Eye Clinic: Board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Harriett Davison, will examine your dog’s eyes with dilation.
Dr. Davison will be available to perform eye examinations to detect inherited eye diseases such as cataracts,
progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and retinal dysplasia. The examination is quick and painless and is required
for registration by OFA. Annual examination is recommended for all dogs that are involved in a breeding
program. Eye drops are applied 10-15 minutes prior to the exam to dilate the pupils. It is recommended that
the examination be performed after your dog has completed judging for the day. The effect of the eye drops
lasts approximately 3 hours. Fee: $40

VetGen Type 1 von Willebrand’s Disease DNA Test: Cheek swab test kit. May be completed at home and
returned directly to VetGen. Fee: $75
AKC DNA Test: Cheek swab test kit. May be completed at home, but must be mailed back to Lori Jodar,
Health Clinic/Kits Coordinator, must be received on or before May 18, 2016. This is a firm date. All kits
must be shipped to AKC as a batch in order to receive the Parent Club Specialty Discount. If your kit is not
received within the allotted time, it will be excluded without refund. PLEASE NOTE: These tests CAN NOT be

you and your Berner to provide valuable information to aid future health research. Each dog that provides a
blood at the event will receive a special gift.

Because veterans are so extra special and have a wealth of health information to share, Berner-Garde will

Responsible Dog Ownership means well-mannered dogs! The AKC Good Citizen testing program has become
recognized as the “gold standard” for the term “well-mannered” as it relates to dog behavior outside of the
home. Now the Program offers official titling as well as the certification. If your dog has already passed the
AKC CGC Test, there are now two new advanced tests that a dog can earn certification and titles beyond
“CGC”. To encourage all Bernese Mountain Dogs to be well-mannered when out in public, we are offering all
three tests at the 2016 Nationals! This test is open to any/all berners over 6 months of age. Proof of CGC is
required to test in the Community Canine (CGCA) or Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU) level. Pre-registration
is highly encouraged due to limited spaces for each test and will be on a first come first served basis. We will
allow day of entry as space allows. All pre-registered teams will be allowed to “move up” to advanced tests at
the pre-registration rate should the team pass the pre-registered test.

handlers, spectators, club members, etc.) shall be allowed to record video of their own dog(s) using cell phones, tablets, or other handheld

GROOMING
NOTE: Grooming and Crating is allowed in designated areas only.
Due to LIMITED GROOMING SPACES, sharing of grooming spaces is encouraged.
Exhibitors may reserve a 10' x 10' grooming space for $100.00, which includes one electrical plug with 20
amps of power, for the entire show period. All paid reserved spaces will be indoors in the Kern Pavilion and
are available on a first come, first served basis through master registration until capacity is reached. When
using PAID spaces, exhibitors are encouraged to bring floor mats and a UL-listed heavy duty exterior
extension cord properly rated for their equipment's amperage. Generators and electric heaters are prohibited.
All extension cords and dryers are subject to inspection, and non-compliant equipment may be removed by
show personnel.
There will be a number of unpaid, non-reserved grooming/day crating spaces available for “day-of-use”
OUTDOORS at the Jaycee Pavilion (behind Kern) on a first come, first served basis. These sites will not have
electricity available, but you may supply your own generator. Access to this area is available to drop off items,
however, there is NO parking allowed on the grass. Setup is required each day; equipment is not to be left.
All set-ups will be supervised by the Grounds Committee as representatives of the BMDCA. The Club reserves
the right to restrict the number of grooming tables and to rearrange grooming areas and set-ups as required
by circumstances for the safety and convenience of all. This includes moving crates, tables, and other
equipment. Exhibitors are expected to comply with all Club rules as laid out by the BMDCA.
ADDITIONAL GROOMING, CRATING, AND SITE INFORMATION FOR EXHIBITORS AND ATTENDEES

 The grooming area will be open daily from 6am (move-in at 2:00pm on 5/2) until 10pm, except for
Saturday. The building will be locked from 10pm until 6am and will be patrolled. DOGS ARE NOT
PERMITTED TO STAY OVERNIGHT IN THE GROOMING AREA.
 The BMDCA and the show committee will not be responsible for theft or damage of items left in the
grooming area. Participants are encouraged to use good judgment when leaving dogs, personal items, or
equipment unattended.
 There is plenty of outdoor space where pop-ups and X-pens are allowed, but property will be left at your
own risk.
 Parties wishing to set up together should submit forms under the same Group Name. No additional
crating inside the building may be reserved or saved.
 At time of move-in, exhibitors will be required to supply contact information, including hotel, room
number, and cell phone number.
 An area outside of the grooming area near the hotel will be provided with several bathing stations.
 Exhibitors and handlers will be held responsible for clean conditions in and around their crates.
 Absolutely no x-pens will be allowed in the grooming area except in reserved areas.
 Bathing/Grooming is not allowed in any hotel room.
 Participants and visitors must abide by the posted signs on the show grounds; failure to do so will result in
a warning and possible ejection from the show site and/or event.
 There is NO parking allowed on the grass ANYWHERE in Heritage Park.

The BMDCA requires each entrant to provide a valid AKC DNA Profile Number for the dog entered on the Official
Entry Form at time of entry. AKC DNA numbers are not required for Special Attractions such as parades. Failure to
meet these requirements will render the dog ineligible to enter the event. This may result in the loss of all awards
earned at the event, as well as subject the entrant to possible disciplinary action by the AKC and/or BMDCA,
including but not limited to suspension from club privileges and entry of club events. All DNA numbers will be
verified by the BMDCA within 30 days after the national Specialty.

evaluate your Berner’s instinct and capability to herd. Junior Herding Dog (JHD) class is a pre-trial level class;

Come Cruise in the Berner Classic Draft tests!
Monday, May 2; Wednesday, May 4; Thursday, May 5; and Friday, May 6, Heritage Park
There will be four BMDCA Draft Tests at the 2016 National Specialty, one each day May 2, 4, 5, and 6. Each test
will offer Novice, Brace Novice, Open, and Brace Open classes, with a limit of 24 entries in each test. The tests
are limited to Bernese Mountain Dogs only. All tests will be held on site at Heritage Park, adjacent to the
Bavarian Inn Lodge and Convention Center. Entrants will need a DNA profile number, as well as a BernerGarde ID number on their entry form. Premium lists will be available for download on the BMDCA website. To

**IMPORTANT** Our goal is to fill all four tests, while accommodating as many teams as possible. Every
effort will be made to ensure each team one chance to compete before second or additional entries will be
allowed.
Team—means either a single dog entry or a brace entry. 1st entry—team’s first entry in a specific class. 2nd
entry—team’s second entry in the same class. A team may enter a specific class only once per day.
Test Preference: Teams entering multiple days may choose which day is their 1st preference, 2nd preference,
etc., on the entry form. There are no guarantees that preferences will be met.
Multiple Team entries: Teams wishing to compete more than once—one team/multiple classes; or one
team/multiple entries in the same class competing multiple days—A team may be entered in multiple
different classes per day or in the same class on multiple days. A team that wants to show twice in the same
class in multiple tests (second or third entry) will only be considered for those additional entries after all other
teams have been considered for their “first entry” in a class. For example, a team may select Novice on
Wednesday as their first entry and Novice on Monday as their second entry. Their additional entries will only
be drawn after all other teams have been considered for their first entry.
A team that wants to show twice in the same class—a “second entry”— will only be considered for that
“second entry” after all other teams have been considered for their “first entry” in a class. For example, a team
may select Novice on Tuesday as their first entry and Novice on Monday as their second entry. Their second
entry will only be drawn after all other teams have been considered for their first entry.
Subject to the above limitations for this Specialty test: Untitled (in the class entered) teams have preference
over titled teams. Titled teams have preference over advanced titled teams. A Brace team is not considered
“titled” until both dogs are “titled”.
Move-ups will be allowed.
There will be a single equipment check for each test and a separate equipment check for the alternates each
day.

CONFORMATION EVENTS
Regular and Non-Regular Conformation, Sweepstakes, Futurity, Veteran Sweepstakes, Junior Showmanship,
and 4-6 month Puppy classes will be held outdoors. See premium list for eligibility requirements. The 2016
specialty committee is excited to offer the National Owner Handler Series (NOHS) at their event. This program
was developed by the AKC to celebrate the dedication and enthusiasm of owner-handler exhibitors. Exhibitors
must have indicated at the time of entry that they are eligible and want to compete in the NOHS. Selection for
the NOHS BOB is held immediately following the regular judging of Best of Breed in the same ring. Additional
information about the NOHS will be included in the premium list for those who are interested in participating in
this program at the 2016 specialty.

VERSATILITY SHOWCASE
This stand-alone conformation competition will showcase dogs and bitches that have received the BMDCA
Versatility Award. Classes will be offered for Versatility/Versatility Excellent, Dogs/Bitches Under 7 Years and 7
Years and Over, with Best in Versatility chosen from the eight class winners. Intact and altered dogs ARE
eligible to compete. Since this showcase is a Special Attraction, dogs or bitches judged first in these
classes will NOT be eligible for Best of Breed by virtue of having won these classes. See the premium
list for eligibility requirements. Versatility Showcase entries will be submitted through MB-F, our Show
Superintendent.
TOP TWENTY GALA
ONE, TWO, THREE O’CLOCK, FOUR O’CLOCK HOP! Join us for a Night of Rockin’ Round the Clock at the BMDCA’s
fourth annual Top Twenty Gala, which will be held the evening of Wednesday, May 4th. This event will showcase
the top conformation dogs from 2015. Entry is by invitation only and is sent to the top 20 Bernese Mountain
Dogs in breed and all-breed points, as determined by AKC statistics from January 1 through December 31, 2015.
Dogs will be prejudged by a three-judge panel the afternoon prior to the gala event. Each judge will evaluate
the dogs on a predetermined point system, enumerating the criteria of our breed standard. The emphasis for
judging is on the individual qualities of the dog and how closely he/she conforms to the breed standard. Points
will be tabulated once the prejudging is completed, and the winner will be announced at the conclusion of the
“bopping” event. In addition, attendees will also have the opportunity to vote for the People’s Choice Award.
The Top Twenty competition will culminate Wednesday evening in the Composer Rooms at the Bavarian Inn
Lodge and Convention Center. The event will be opened to the general public to view the final showcase of the
Top Twenty dogs and presentation of awards to the top winners. This event will be both entertaining and
exciting as the handlers present their dogs to music chosen by them to represent the unique personalities of
their dogs. The theme this year is a 1950’s “Sock Hop”, so bring out those saddle shoes, poodle skirts, and letter
sweaters! Food will be available for purchase.
Honor your top dog or dogs, both in past years as well as
2016, living or in your heart, by purchasing a 45 RPM record
complete with a commemorative popcorn box and vintage
candy for $20, available through the BMDCA online store at
http://www.bmdca-store.com. Each record will list the
honored dog, along with their sponsor, and will be available
for pick up at the Top Twenty ring. Top Twenty Gala
donations are also very welcome and may be made through
the master registration form.
