COMMUNITY CALENDAR Arthur Adams at the SLO Vets Hall This charming and unexpected trio features Sutton’s lush vocals with DownBeat’s “flutist of the year,” Hubert Laws, and stellar guitar by Larry Koonse. The combined talent of Sutton, Laws and Koonse represents one of the most creative forces in jazz today, as they explore the interplay between jazz and chamber music. The inherent intimacy of their blend should make for an unforgettable evening of sonic exploration. Tierney Sutton normally travels with her own stellar band, but this collaboration is one of the most touted trios in jazz today. Tickets are $100 for patron, $45 for section A and $35 for section B. Tickets are subject to $5 per ticket Lobero Facility Fee; other fees may also apply. The concert will feature an opportunity for area jazz students to win a grant for school jazz programs. Following the news comes naturally to native New Yorker Tim Jones, who studied broadcast journalism and worked as a news writer for NBC, before ditching it in favour of the stage. He moved to Los Angeles, and started to take to the stage at the Comedy Store’s amateur night. He then moved onto the TV circuit, appearing on everything from Fresh Prince of Bel Air to MTV and Comedy Central. Kabir Singh will also perform. Kabir Singh is the 2009 and 2010 winner of both of the major Bay Area Stand up Comedy Competition beating over 160 comics from all over the U.S by coming in first place in all three rounds BOTH YEARS! Kabir has since then headlined a night at every major comedy club in the Bay Area including selling out the SJ Improv 4 times including a Friday Night as well as headlining a whole full weekend at Pepperbellys Comedy club in Fairfield and selling out shows at the SF Punchline and SAC Punchline. Show time is 8 p.m. on Friday and 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $15. The show is ages 21 and over. There is a two drink minimum per person. For more information, call (805) 644-1500. Tim Jones at the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club CLU Wind Ensemble and Chamber Wind Ensembles’ PRISM Concert at Samuelson Chapel Saturday, March 17 at 8 p.m. at 801 Grand Ave., in San Luis Obispo The San Luis Obispo Blues Society welcomes Arthur Adams. Arthur’s freight train guitar and soul-steeped vocals, combined with his prolific predilection for writing great material (often in conjunction with award-winning composer Will Jennings), are all brilliantly showcased on his Blind Pig debut Back On Track, his first album in two decades. The set features two sparkling duets (“Got You Next To Me” and “The Long Haul”) pairing Adams with his principal stylistic influence, the great B.B. King, and his regal presence is quite an honor for his long time friend Arthur. The Cinders Blues Band opens the show. Tickets are $17 for Blues Society members and $20 for the general public. Sunday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. at California Lutheran University, 60 West Olsen Road, in Thousand Oaks Members of the University Wind Ensemble will present CLU’s second annual PRISM concert. The varied and eclectic program will feature performances by soloists and chamber ensembles along with the Wind Ensemble for a complete spectrum of wind and percussion music. Michael D. Chestnut St., in Ventura The mastermind of the Parliament/Funkadelic collective during the 1970s, George Clinton broke up both bands by 1981 and began recording solo albums, occasionally performing live with his former bandmates as the P.Funk All-Stars. The Mighty Diamonds at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club Friday, March 23 at 9:30 p.m. at 1221 State St., in Santa Barbara The Mighty Diamonds continue to achieve stardom on their own terms, wrapping a militant message in some of the prettiest melodies around. Even with their mushrooming international popularity, the Mighty Diamonds have not forgotten their roots which come from the unique cultural potpourri of Jamaica with its harsh ghetto realities and its irresistible reggae pulse.
