Night Dinners January 8, 15, 22, 29: Fri. Night Dinner. January 20: Birthday/Anniversary Potluck, 7 PM MEETINGS January 6: PYC Board Meeting Happy New Year to all for 2010. By now most of you have recovered from the holidays and the New Year’s Day Commodore’s Cruise-Out to Driftwood. During the joint board meeting held in December, I outlined some goals and objectives for 2010. It is my intention to assign a couple of major projects to your directors. This is being done to expose these officers to the daily operation of the club and to kindle their interest in progressing through the chairs. After our January board meeting I hope to outline more of a program of projects for the upcoming year. As always it’s the Commodore’s responsibility to recognize major contributors to your club. To Debbie Wagner, many ‘Thank You’ for your attention to our Yeoman. Also your dinner for our joint meeting was outstanding. As most of you have noticed your club is bustling with rental activity. When you see Wanda Dillon and Dorothy O’Connor please let them know you appreciate their efforts. Reminder to all that the monthly board meetings are always open to members. If you have anything to contribute or would like to get a front row seat please drop by to get a feel for your club. As you can tell I’m really recruiting some new faces for upcoming board seats. All members were very supportive last year to our board and I’m asking you one and all to continue your sincere support for 2010. If you see something that needs to be done, do it, or tell a board member and we’ll get it done. That means Monday night football is over already, but we still have Super Bowl Sunday coming. If anyone would like to over see that event give me a call 925-858-9145. Carlos and I have done the halftime dinner for three years and it needs some new ideals and/or menu. Alrighty, we've got Big Dan at the helm and Miss Carol at the back of the boat, so looks like another good year at PYC. It's time open your wallets and let the butterflies out. We have the Commordore’s dinner on the January 23rd, Jim Martin’s Crab feed January 16th, the Super Bowl Party on February 7th and our Annual Hot Crab Feed on the February13th… and then on March 13th we have our St. Patrick’s Day Corned Beef Dinner. Boy, I've got to slow down! Bars open come by and say howdy, Rich Irwin Vice Commodore January 2010 cbuyvid@aol.com T his new year, we begin with the Club in very good shape. Many thanks to Dan O’Connor and the entire 2009 Board of Directors’ for all the hard work!! We would like to schedule our first ‘Work Party’ for this upcoming March. Your new Commodore has several projects in mind which really do need to be completed and for which we would solicit help from our Members. Repair the firewall in the upstairs Board Room. The Side Yard that needs cleaning (!!) and concrete poured for a pad. Broken Roof Tiles: These need repair and should you see anyone at all walking on the Clubhouse Roof, please stop them or contact a Board Member, as these broken tiles will surely lead to water damage. We would like to add one more major task and that is to finally finish the lattice skirting around the deck. It is at the moment, rather unsightly. That is it for the moment. Should you see anything that needs attention, please do contact me or another Board Member. Carol Buyvid Rear Commodore WEDNESDAY NIGHT CHEFS LYNN FOGLEMAN fogie7777@aol.com 925.200.5307 The will not be a dinner on Wednesday January 6, 2010. We are giving Rich Cervantes a break. We will kick off the New Year with Wednesday night Dinners on January 13, 2010 with guest chef Steve Simmons. Steve has graciously agreed to start the New Year with a great dinner and give Dan Hoffman a break from his duties. Please take Steve's lead and volunteer to do just one or two dinners a year to let our regular chefs have some time off. Thank you and I will look forward to seeing everyone on January 13, 2010 if not before! As I write this, it is just before the Lighted Boat Parade and the weather forecast doesn’t look too good. I’m hoping it will get a little better as we get closer, but…. As you are reading this, we should have also completed our Commodore’s Cruise out to Driftwood and I’m sure we had a good time. This month we don’t have any other cruise outs. Our first one of the years is in February when we go to Vallejo. Look for more information in the club and next month’s Yeoman. Below is the cruise out schedule for 2010 and everything is confirmed. The only one I’m not 100% sure of is Sacramento, but 5/27-31 is Memorial Day weekend when it should be. I also don’t have anything down for September, if anything changes with The Seafood Festival, I will schedule something if time allows. Feb. 19-21 Vallejo - confirmed Mar. 12-14 Caliente - confirmed Apr. 16-18 Petaluma - confirmed May 27-31 Sacramento Jazz Festival June 18-20 Stockton - confirmed July 23-25 Marina West - confirmed August 20-22 Napa - confirmed October /8-17 Down Bay – confirmed and a work in progress Again, just a note, to all you folks who don’t have a boat, be aware that you are more than welcome to join us on cruise outs by driving to where we are. I just need to know to schedule your dinner reservation. So come on out and play with us. Also, I’m always looking for crew, so if you want to come with me, just let me know, first come first serve. It will be a pleasure to once again serve PYC as your Port Captain, and thank you for continued support. I have already confirmed the following dates for the following yacht clubs to cruise in to PYC in 2010: January 30th: Caliente Isle YC February 5 - 6th: Bridge Marina YC February 19 - 21: Benicia YC March 5 - 6: Dos Rios March 19 - 20; Sacramento Bayliner April 16 - 17; Solano YC May; Open June 11 - 12: Delta Marina July: Club Rentals August 6: Coyote Point YC Sept 10 - 11: Ox Bow YC Oct: Open Nov. 12 - 13: Bridge Marina Dec. 11: Lighted Boat Parade? I look forward to meeting with some of our new members and getting involved with our cruise-in's. As you know we need to have function chairman's and help for each cruise in. Please contact me if you would like to sign up for a function and help, remember each member is required to put in at least 8 hours per year. It is fun and you get to meet new members and get involved with the cruise in people. Come share and enjoy the camaraderie! I want to thank all of you for allowing me the opportunity to serve this club and hopefully make some progress. I will be around the club and on cruise outs, so I’ll still see you all. For 2010 I will be busy though. I have been accepted to the Project Management Institute Project Management Professional course so I can work towards getting my credentials. It’s a very intense course and I’ll be doing that for first six months then go for my certification. Then I can put those letters ‘PMP’ after my name on my business cards (and hopefully a few more $ signs to my paycheck). I also want to spend more time being involved with my daughter’s equestrian competitions. I believe she has a shot at the 2016 Olympics if she keeps on track, so I want to be there to help out. And that was the beginning of a life-long association with boating. At 17, he opened a boat repair business. And eventually began yacht sales in Jack London Square in Oakland, where he operated several businesses over 18 years during the late 60’s, the 70’s and 80’s, including Embarcadero Boat Works, yacht sales, and The Spice Box. During that time, Ralph was active with the Oakland Metropolitan Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore during the 1980’s. On the side, he ran off shore races in Alameda, and started off shore races at Lake Tahoe in the 1980’s. He also opened an associate office in Marina Del Rey in southern California during the 1970’s, where he rubbed elbows with the movie industry. His business chartered boats for the film companies and movie stars, like movie Lucky Lady, and ol’ blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra. He even did TV commercials! When the economy turned bad in the early 80’s, Ralph was not one to sit around. He spent 3 years traveling around the world serving individual clients who had large yachts built and then delivered. He then returned home and opened a Carver California dealership. He sold that and in 1987 opened a yacht sales office and a marine parts store at the Antioch Marina. In 1998 a terrible fire erupted, caused by a short in the wiring on the docks, and in minutes, burned the marina and Ralph lost 13 boats and his business. But, some influential folks from Pittsburg saw an opportunity, and invited Ralph to open a yacht sales office at the Pittsburg Yacht Club marina. And when you are at the club, if you look out the window, you’ll see Tocci Yacht sales office still there, after 11 years. In 1980 Ralph met his anchor, Jackie, by pure coincidence. Jackie was invited on a boat by friends for a cocktail. When the friend’s husband went to get ice, he came back with ice cubes and Ralph. That began their relationship which eventually led to marriage in 1988. Jackie worked for years in the office of a sanitary district. So, when they got married, Ralph, always creative, thought it would be fun if they rode to their wedding in one of the garbage trucks! Well, Jackie thought that idea stunk and nixed it! Ralph and Jackie live in Moraga, and have for many years, with the deer, including the one that makes a bed in the bushes outside their bedroom window, the raccoons, wild turkeys, and nearby cows. And they love every minute of it. Except, of course, when they are in the Golf Stream RVing, heading to Palm Springs, Arizona, and Mexico. Between the two, they have 5 daughters and 4 grandchildren--and, not the least, Vin- Enjoy the Yeoman in Color — Visit us on the web at www.pittsburgyc.com (Continued on page 11) January 2010 Pittsburg Yacht Club—The Yeoman nie, their dog. Vinnie considers himself chairman of the hospitality committee for the PYC, and serves as the official PYC greeter to cruise-in boats! Ralph stops by the Club regularly. He and Jackie like to attend the Friday night dinners when they can. You hear Ralph’s auctioneering skills at the annual auction/dinner in November, and you can enjoy an occasional Wednesday night dinner cooked by the Tocci’s. When you see them, stop and chat with Ralph and Jackie Tocci, January 2010 members of the month. Page 11 YEOMAN EARLY BIRDS! Did you know? “Sturm und Drang” comes from German, where it literally means “storm and stress.” Although it’s now a generic synonym of “turmoil,” the term was originally used in English to identify a late 18th-century German literary movement whose works were filled with rousing action and high emotionalism, and often dealt with an individual rebelling against the injustices of society. The movement took its name from the 1776 play Sturm und Drang, a work by one of its proponents, dramatist and novelist Friedrich von Klinger. Although the literary movement was well known in Germany in the late 1700s, the term “Sturm und Drang” didn’t appear in English prose until the mid-1800s. "Hay did all right since leaving the force." "Until now," said Lieutenant Molly Mulroy. She took in the plush furnishings, the huge oak desk, and the expensive artwork adorning the walls. But the effect was ruined by Harry Hay's crumpled form bloodying the carpet beneath the window. The summer morning sun poured through the single, open window. It was warm, but the room felt cold with death. Molly studied the dead private eye one more time. "Looks like the killer smashed in his skull from behind." "Yeah," Dawson agreed. "And that bloody hammer beside him is what did the job "Probably. It might also be what was used to stun Patrolman Grove. Let's go out to the waiting room and see what Grove can tell us." Policeman Artie Grove gingerly pressed an ice bag to the lump on the back of his skull. "I'd stopped at the café across the road for a cup of coffee. When I came out, I heard a loud cry. It seemed to have come from this building, so I hurried over and pounded on the door. No one answered, but I noticed the door wasn't quite latched, so I gave it a push. The door to the inner office wasn't closed, and across the room...Well, you know what I saw." January 2010 pulled up." "It wasn't?" Molly glance out the window to the photographer's studio across the parking lot. "What door did you use to come in this morning?" "There's only one--on the other side of the building." "Thanks. Uh, one more thing. The weapon--" "Was it that hammer? If so, it wasn't Harry's. But I saw Jim Lacey using one like it yesterday out in front of his store." "Jim Lacey?" "Yes. He owns that photo place. He and Harry didn't get along at all." Molly and Dawson went to question Lacey. "I don't know what you think I can tell you," Lacey complained. "Then you know why we're here?" "Sure. When I saw the cop cars and ambulance I popped outside to check what was happening "I understand you were repairing something with a hammer yesterday "Yeah. An awning. So what?" "May I see the hammer, please." "Can't. Forgot to bring it inside. I was just looking for it now, but...Damn! You're not saying my hammer was used "Sure looks that way, Mr. Lacey." "Well, it wasn't me. Though Hay's getting murdered doesn't surprise me. I developed a few pictures for him when he first started up. Bad stuff. Told him to take his business elsewhere. How he "We do," Molly said. "But that's not the end of your story." could follow people around and pry into their lives like he Grove frowned and shifted his big frame in the chair. "No, I guess did...What a sleazeball!" it isn't. I did a dumb thing. Without thinking, I started toward "Anyone could have done it," Dawson said, as he and Molly rehim. A shadow fell over my shoulder, but before I could swing turned to the murder scene. "Anyone could have picked up that around...." He lifted the ice from his skull, wincing. hammer and killed Hay." He motioned toward the open window. "So you didn't get even a glimpse at the perp.," Sergeant Dawson "If the window was closed, like Ms. Falcone said, then she must've scowled driven up while the killer was still inside. This was the escape "'Fraid not. I blacked out for a couple minutes. Next thing I knew route." Hay's secretary was standing over me screaming." Molly nodded, frowning, then stared at Dawson as he bent over Molly glanced at Dawson. "I think it's time we question the secre- the bloody mark on the carpet. "Of course! Why didn't I see it before. "Harry Who does Lt. Molly Mulroy suspect? asked me to marry him. Just yesterday. And now--" She twisted the handkerchief with her nail-bitten fingers Patrolman Grove "Did Mr. Hay usually arrive at the office before you?" Molly asked Marie Falcone gently. Jim Lacey The petite woman nodded. "Harry liked to come in early--even when he wasn't busy." "Then business was slow at the moment "Yes. Nothing he was working on could have led to this." She sobbed softly. "Maybe it ties in with a past case?" Dawson suggested. "He must've made some enemies in his profession." "I suppose. Harry didn't give me all the details when he worked on a case. He only told me what he thought was safe for me know." What clues attracted her attention? Answer on page 19 "We'd like to look through his files, Ms. Falcone." "Of course. Whatever. Crypto! uses a simple substitution cipher, for example all of the A's might be replaced with Q's, all of the B's with W's, etc. To solve the cryptogram, you must figure out which ordinary letter each letter in the puzzle stands for. Molly Mulroy suspect? Patrolman Grove What clue has attracted her attention? When Dawson moved toward the bloodstained carpeting, Molly noticed his shadow and saw the truth. Grove said his assailant’s shadow fell over his shoulder as he approached Hay’s body, but that wasn’t possible. The morning sun coming in the window would throw all shadows behind a person, not in front of him. Caught in the lid, Grove confessed. “If you think Hay’s fancy office came from great detective work, think again. He was nothing but a slimy blackmailer. He’d been bleeding me for a stupid mistake I made when we were partners years ago. “I spotted that hammer laying outside and saw my chance. But as I was about to leave, I heard that secretary’s care door slam. I didn’t think I could squeeze my big frame through Hay’s office window. So I hit myself with the hammer and came up with my story. January 2010 Pittsburg Yacht Club—The Yeoman Page 19 Page 20 Pittsburg Yacht Club —The Yeoman THE YEOMAN PLACE YOUR AD IN THE YEOMAN!
