As I review the days’ journeys from place to place last summer, the campings In village after village o f which everybody has read, the hills sod valleys, plains and brooks whose Dimes had long been familiar hot which, as I nsed to read about them, I had hardly hoped ever to see, the memory o f It all la almost as pleasant as was the trip Itself. But I know that I shall b.t unable to give to those who may chance to read after me the picture th it was spread before my eyes. H ow ever, I will beglu at the beginning and take you aloug with us, and try to let you see the people and places and roadi> ; the bouses and vineyards and orchards; the camels and doukeys, just as tre saw theca as * e went. I know also that I cannot make you as.hungry, thirsty and tired as w e g ot sometimes, riding from before sunrise until late iu the afternoon; but I presume tbe account would not gain iu interest, were it included in it. Four of us younger instructors aodproforsora In tbe college at Beirut, had decided early in the year to spend the first six weeks os the long vacation in travel iu Palestine. W e were Moore, instrnctor in English in tbe collegiate department; Adams, Professor in the Medical School, known in oa r private circle as the Uaktem ( D r ) ; Beecher, Principal o f tbe Preparatory S ch ool; and myself, his associate in the arduous duties o f that office. W e bad been long enough in the country to know that a tour in Palestine is not merely a matter o f a grip and a railroad ticket. The only train service is between Jaffa and Jerusalem, and here there is. as Dr. Selah Merrill, U. 8. Con sul at the latter place, puts it, “ Almost one train a d ay." N or can one go by carriage; tbe only carriage roads except In and around cities and large towns, being that from Beirut to Damascus with a few branches to smaller places uear Beirut, and another from Jerusa lem to Hebron. The one method left is to g o by horse; and that is o f .course the prevailing one. liotels are few and poor, and tbe khans or Inns are so ill-kept and inconvenient that tbe nsual and most satisfactory arrangement is for the traveler to g et a complete camping outfit and be like Selkirk Iu the poem—“ M on arch o f all be surveys," provided he doesn’ t look too far. Accordingly, before tbe end o f the term, tents, bed and bedding, cooking apparatus and all Uie necessary paraphernalia fo r such an excur.'cn were gotten together. Muleteers were engaged to convey the bag gage, horses hired fo r those who bad none, all to be ready on Saturday, July 15th. Saddles and bridles were put in tbe best possible con dition, saddle bags were brought to light from the corners in which they bad lain daring the busy school year. Nose-bags and hobbles, tethering pegs and chains appeared along with them, either from tbe winter Btore-r«om or from tbe bazaar— the latter in my case The camp beds were o f canvas on folding Iron frames- upon these were spread mattresses which with the covers were roiled into a com pact bundle and placed iuto a stout case for carriage. Dr. Adams assumed charge o f the medicine chest. These general prepara tions and almost innumerable ones by iu dividual metnburs o f tbe party had all been made witbiu a day or tw o arter the close o f the college, which occurred on July 12th. The raios begin in tbe plain here in October. Beirut is net a healthy place immediately before the rains after tbe long dry season, and consequently tbe college year lb a month tardy at each end. Some who read may breathe a sigh o f relief that they arc not called to labGr under the Syrian sun, or even confined in a recitation room in the month of July in that land i but let me state that in the matter o f beat in degrees, we cannot compare with tbe N ew Jersey coast T o substantiate this I give from my diary the dally figures shown by the thermometer hung in my open window, during tbe first week in July, 1893. They are as fol low s: Saturday, 1st 79®; 2d, 83°;.8d. 83°; 4th. 79®; 5th, 78®; 6th, 78®; 7th, 79®. ’ It may not be amiss to say here that we have none o f tbe ho t swelteriug weather that comes by spells with us at home, where eases o f sonstroke are reported by tbe dozen. Io Beirut, weather it perhaps never so warm as occas ionally during thr summer iu New Jersey, but It is relentless and unchanging. Tbe nights are but a degree or tw o cooler than tbe days, and as the summer comes on, each week shows an advance, generally speaking,on tbe precede ing one. It is the long coutinnance of warm weather that is wearying, when tbe nights afford little recreation. But to resame. We had arranged to start on Saturday (15th) and spend the follow ing day ia Sidon. But oar plans were m no way different from thoue o f many “ mice and m en." Saturday came bat no muleteers until too late to get away, for Sidon Is nine hoars’ journey from Beirut for mules, over a bad road at that. Distances io 8yrla are all calculated in time, for roads vary so moch that the actual space between places Is anything but a safe guide as to the time necessary to traverse it. W e eudorwJ the delay in the lonesome halls and dormitories as patiently as we coaid. E-trly on Monday, 17th, the moles were packed. There were tear stoat animals; and tbe head muleteer. Fails, (in Arabic K n igh t) and his two men had a lively lim e in getting tbe loads on. Heavy feed in preparation fo r tbe journey had made the animals fractions. One black beast iu particular rejoiced in the name of Shytani (she devil) She was very large and strong, and the operation o f adjusting her pack-saddle was as interesting as a little circus. Besides tbe males there were two horses, one for Ibrahim, the cook, end another te r tbe servant who eased for o a r bosses, and also three donkeys fo r Iks muleteers. These wKh tbe animals which we rode made tbe caravan foot up to the unlucky number o f thirteen, By 8 o'clock they filed o ff out of the big gate. Old Slrkan the gale keeper sent his blessing after them. T h e hells o n the moles tinkled mervtty; the sheas and bine bends on their bridles looked neat and gag. Few zxsaietesrs omit the blue bead, for It keeps o ff the “ eri? eye.” Tbe e v il eye is supposed to ha a bins oae and the bine bead has a to rt o f nallifylng effect upon its death-dealing gaxe. For sue by draggim. ambled oft bravely, just about high enough to keep the feet o f their riders from touching the earth. As Is customary, one o f them led tbs line as they started down the street, remtadimt one o f the conumdrnm, “ Why is a caravan like the Turkish Em pire? ” Poor as tbe joke is, it Ia soms consolation to one who knows the truth about the government, to perpetrate it, T he wall which usually arrives on Saturday had been delayed, and waa not yet In on Mon day morning. But tbe steamer bad come, and we coucludod to w ait fo r our letters, as we could not get news from home again until we reached Jersuniem. By ten o ’clock we were off, wiudiog along the beach towards the south, and at noon when w e stopped at a khau for lunch Beirut, and tbe rocky headlands upon which U is situated, could no longer be seen. Tbe tram had passed tbe khan some lim e be fore. We had been riding fo r two hours over a broad stretch of loose sand, exteudiug from Beirut some miles to the south. Wind and waves have driven It up Into large dunes and swseps,-until now It is eucroacblug upon the city Itself in many places. The portlou near the c ity Is the Rotlsn R ow o f tbe place. Every afternoon riders may be seen cxerclting them selves and tbeir horses. Ouv spot was used as a training ground during last winter and spring by the Bedouin Encampment that was exbibUed later at Chicago. Just inside this vast 4rlp of sand is one o f the fin&t olive groves In Syria, c ov e rlo g several tfaousaud acres o f tbe plain between Lcbauon and the sea. in tbe vicinity o f Beirut. The day from Beirut to Sidon is proverbially o n a o f tbe dullest. H a lf (be way tbe road lies on the sea beach, and the remainder is nothing but a stony path around tbe foot-hills o f the Lebanon, which here reaches tbe roast. A third o f tbe way down is Khun Kbnldah, which is said to be the spot between Beirut and Sidon, where Antony and Cleopatra m et and revelled. T w o hours further ou is a queer little poiut-like structure o f stone, staudiug at the edge o f a mulberry orchard near the sea. I f you aak a native what it means, he will tell you that it marks tbe Bpot where Neby (prophet) Tun us was cast by the whale upon dry laud. Long before we reached Sidon, the citadel o f the old castle there became visible overlooking the town from the south side. Six and a half centuries have left it a mass of ruins. Drawing nearer w e could make out the boundaries o f the rich plain which has supported the city since the time o f Genesis The Lebanon here retreats some disUuce from the sea, and gardens aud ollvs groves fill the Intervening plain. Just before we reached tbe town we passed tbe mules plodding along through the sand. Faris had traveled the country over many times and knew the beet camping ground aud we soon setiled iu an open spot Bligblly removed from the city, near the ruiued castle above mentioned. G iving tbe horses over io Miihem we hastened to the seashore for a bath, exploring tbe river on the way down aud returning through tbe city. The castle is a vast labyrinth o f rooms and courts and passages. I t was dark as we returned. W e climbed from ibe surf directly up tbe side o f a h ill composed o f decomposed vhells o f the m u rex—from which the Tyrean purple was anciently made—aud wound our way through the dingy streets, alm ost too narrow for loaded animals to pass. Th ey are coyered in many places and are either lighted by lamps or candles, or else are dark altogether. How any city can be content, with such streets, dirty and narrow, III paved and rough; or with tbe small and iucouveulent shops, almost as dirty as the streets; or with tbe bouses, little, square stone arrangements, built after a stylo of architecture dubbed by Adams the “ dry goods b ox ," is more than any traveler from the Occident can comprehend. Thus they remain from year to year aud from generation to generation. It 1b one exam ple o f the blind obedience to custom which characterizes this people. Modern Sidon is not tbe Sidon of the Old Testament o r even o f the time of C h rist; bnt in it there is much that baa been a common heritage from lim e immemorial. Harky C. Haysns.
