Do you remember the campaign last year to have a silver dollar coin made to commemorate Lions
Clubs 100th Anniversary in 2017? On October 5, 2014 President Barack Obama signed into law the
Lions Club International Century of Service Commemorative Coin Act, P.L. 112-181.
Congressman Peter Roskam (IL) stated “Today is a day when we can celebrate accomplishment in
the private sector and in the volunteer sector, and to celebrate a rich history and a century of
accomplishment—accomplishment that is borne of service to one another. I am honored to serve as
the representative for the Lions Club International headquarters. They’re an organization that not
only … has an impact here in the United States but has an impact around the world. And I would
argue that if you have an impact on vision for children, if you have an impact on vision for others,
you’re not just having an impact on the family but your having a generational impact. And so here we
are today, celebrating the Lions Club International as they’re on the cusp of a new century. I am
pleased to be a part of this bipartisan effort.”
Dane LaJoye– LCI Public Relations & Communications Division Manager, noted “Many, many
took the time to contact their congressional representatives and senators.”
There will be “no more than” 400,000 silver coins of both Proof and Uncirculated finish made. The
coin will weigh 26.73 grams, have a diameter of 1.5 inches and be composed of 90 percent silver with
10 percent copper. The coins will be legal tender but their silver content will far exceed their face
value.
The Secretary of the Treasury will decide the final design of the coin after consultation with Lions
Clubs International Special Centennial Planning Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts along
with a review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
As with all coins, this one will have “a designation of value, inscriptions of the words ‘Liberty’, ‘In
God We Trust’, ‘United States of America’, and ‘E Pluribus Unum’. The year will be 2017 and a
design for the Lions Clubs International centennial emblem will be featured. This coin could hold the
LCI emblem and the motto “We Serve” with the two lions facing away from the letter L indicating the
“face of both past & future– showing both pride of heritage and confidence in the future.”
The cost to the coin will include a $10 surcharge earmarked for distribution to the secretary of LCIF.
The current plan for the money from the surcharge will fund existing Lions programs. “There are no
new initiatives planned at this time,” stated Dane LaJoye, “that could change in the future.”

Greetings Lions of 5M3! This article follows a busy week of Lions activities and as
a new District Governor, I'm just now catching my breath! I started the
weekend with the Hadley Lions for the Murray County Fair Parade, followed up
with the fabulous charter night for the new Pipestone Lions Club, held my first
Cabinet Meeting in Redwood Falls and then ate a great burger and sweet corn meal
with the Westbrook Lions Club! I am excited to be visiting all corners of our
great 5M3 District!
Summer is nearly done and the fall is right around the corner! Many of our clubs are
starting up after a long summer break and I have heard that many groups have big
plans for the coming months. I am excited to hear about many of these projects and
look forward to seeing what will no doubt be fantastic results!

MD5M! I'm confident our clubs can step up to the challenge!
And as long as we are talking about challenges, I have one for the 43 clubs in our
district. Lions Club International Foundation is one of the premier philanthropic
organizations in the world. Last year, LCIF gave more than $50 million to people all
around the world. When a disaster strikes or the need arises, LCIF is there to lend a
helping hand. The power of LCIF lies in the fact that the strength of the foundation
begins with the local clubs -- it is the small and local groups that combine to give
LCIF the muscle it flexes all over the world.
I want 100 percent of the clubs in 5M3 to donate at least $25 to LCIF this year -and if I get 100 percent of the clubs in 5M3 to donate, I will personally donate $500
to LCIF. I think this is a very doable challenge -- many of our clubs already donate
generously to LCIF. I think its time for all of us to get involved! I also encourage
each club to donate to the Lions Vision Foundation, the Lions Hearing Foundation
and the Lions Diabetes Foundation. The amount of work these groups do for
the folks in Southwestern Minnesota is staggering -- and we as Lions need to
support that work!

One of the “perks” of being 1st VDG is that I was able to visit the Leader Dogs
for the Blind campus and I can tell you it is an awesome place with awesome people.
It really is a “house of miracles”, with the clients who come there leaving with their
independence and self confidence restored! Lion Deloy King, 5M3 Leader Dog
chairman, can come to your club and give a presentation on Leader Dogs and give
you more details, but I would like to touch some highlights of the program. The
whole program started because of 3 Lions who didnʼt accept how expensive and also some of the policies
that existed with organizations that had dogs available for the blind at that time.
Leader Dog now estimates that each dog would cost $39,000 if all costs were added in, but the only cost
to the clients is the expense of getting there and getting back home!
The first thing that impressed me was that for every paid worker there are approximately 20 unpaid
volunteers. These volunteers are there helping every day of the year to care for and nurture the dogs. Some
of them also raise & train the puppies until formal training can begin at 18 to 24 months of age. The dog
food for just the campus totals 80,000 pounds per year! The information on the breeding dogs reminds me
of the records that would be kept on race horses! Every effort is made to get the perfect Leader Dog but
still only about 40 - 50% of the dogs who start training finish. The dog has to really want to do the job
rather than being just able to do it.
There is, in addition to the Leader Dogs program, an Orientation and Mobility Course that teaches the
clients the basics of how to get somewhere and just as important how to get back. They need to preplan in
their mind the trip and the steps to get there and then follow it exactly both ways! Every 4 to 6 weeks a
group of 15 to 25 clients begin a 26 week course so they can function in most any situation. Lions
contribute at least $2 million a year to help keep this program going.
Leader Dog is also having a capital building fund drive and they still need close to a million dollars from
the Lions to finish it off. Lions are not the only ones who support the project as they also have individuals
and corporations that give generously. We were the first ones to tour the new/ old facilities and you could
really see how they needed the new areas. If you have a little money left over in your funds, the building
fund would be a really good place to put it. Finally, if you know of anyone who is going blind, Leader
Dogs would be the place to tell them about so they can get the information they need to make the difficult
decisions that lie ahead for them. All in all, it shows what we can do as Lions if we all work together!!

$8.47 for Liability Insurance and $6.50 for
Bonding.
At one time registration fee for new members is
$25.00.
Be sure to send your dues in promptly as your
club relies on this money to pay the costs above
on an annual basis! If your club was not
requiring your members to pay at least $55.55
per year, your club is then relying on monies
collected from fundraisers to pay your dues,
taking away from what the money is intended for.
Also fundraising monies cannot be used for dues
unless the fundraiser specifically tells the patrons
that the money goes towards your administrative

Lions Clubs Team Up to
Take a Swing at Diabetes
The Sherburn Lions Club invited the Jackson
Lions Club to join them this year in an 18-hole Golf
Tournament with all proceeds going to the Minnesota
Lions Diabetes Foundation.
Event organizers Mark Wohlhuter from the Sherburn
Lions Club and Tim Olson from the Jackson Lions
Club, welcomed over 75 golfers to Fox Lake Golf
Club for the 18-hole, four-person best shot event on
Friday, June 12. Along with an afternoon of golf, the
event included raffle prizes, auction items and a steak
dinner. At the end of the day, $4,000 had been raised
to benefit the MN Lions Diabetes Foundation.
The tournament, which was open to the public, was
considered a great success and plans are already
underway for the second annual tournament to be held
next June.
At the Murray County Fair when the Hadley Lions, Hadley
Lioness, Lake Wilson Lions and the Fulda Lions
cooperate to man the Fair's Beer Garden for four days, Aug.
12-15, as a multiple Club fundraiser. The members were
working in the photo are Lions Darren and Lisa Saner of the
Hadley Lions.
This last spring I
brought up the idea of
having a fair booth to
my Milroy Lions
club. The club agreed
that a booth was a
good idea, however
the club felt that other
clubs in Redwood
County should help
sponsor the booth so that one club did not have to bear all of
the financial and labor burden. So I went to various clubs
within Redwood County to promote the booth. I managed to
get half the clubs within the county to support the booth
financially. Lion Cheri did all the behind scenes work,
gathering the items we needed for the booth, ie: magnets,
pamphlets, brochures, banner, table and tablecloth, skirt, and
creating a wonderful membership inquiry brochure to give
out to prospective members. An 8X8 booth was secured.
Although attendance numbers at the Redwood County Fair
were down this year, the fair still had around 20,000 in
attendance and the booth was still a success. We managed to
get four interested candidates. We gave out magnets that had
a picture of a lion with the Lions emblem and the 5M3
website. Also available were pamphlets and brochures telling
people all about Lions. 22 people volunteered to sit at the
booth for the duration of the 4 day fair.
Now we have a booth kit for any event within the 5M3
district. If any club in the district is interested in having a

Shelter
The Lions Club of New Ulm donated
$1000.00 to NUMAS Haus (New Ulm
Ministerial Association), an emergency
shelter and support service for up to 3
single, homeless mothers and their children
who attend New Ulm schools. This project
will provide up to 90 days of counseling,
financial training and preparation for
finding and maintaining employment. The
cost of renovation and first year expenses
of NUMAS Haus is estimated to be
$125,000. Tax deductible donations can be

Lions' International Youth Exchange:
CAMP SPICER
33 youth from 20 countries were in Minnesota
this summer through the Lions Youth Exchange
program. They lived with host families for about
a month and attended Camp Spicer the week of
July 18. Thanks to all of the families in MD5M
who took youth into their homes this
summer. Special thanks to the 5M2 clubs who
hosted events during camp week and to VDG
Steve and PID Debra Wasserman for their
presentation on challenges related to sight. We
also want to thank the Lions supported programs
that were visited during the week: Can-DoCanines, Camp Friendship Ventures and the
Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.
Lions International Youth Exchange Camp

5M3 Chartered it’s first club in 9 years. Pipestone is not only the newest Lions Club in our District but
it also brings in a club of youngest members in any club in the district except the SMSU College
Campus Lions. Keynote speaker Past International Director Lion Brian Sheehan stated that “The Lions
logo is the 7th most recognized logo in the world”.

1. As scheduled, representatives from the Eye Bank
Association of America (EBAA) visited the
Minnesota Lions Eye Bank recently for our
accreditation inspection. Here are a few of the
inspectors' comments:
This is a very impressive eye bank and quality
assurance program.
You have a very helpful staff.
We see a lot of people taking pride in what they do.
The inspectors gave the eye bank a 100% rating.
They did not request or recommend any changes to
our operations, policies, or procedures. It is our
first perfect inspection in 15 years!
2. MLVF has decided to support financially a new
Clinical Surgery Center at the U of M. The initial
location is in the Minnesota Lions Eye Surgical
Center until a permanent location is identified. New
faculty in the areas of Glaucoma, NeuroOphthalmology and Oculoplastics are in place.
Search for faculty is ongoing for Cornea and Retina.
3. At the MLVF July meeting we heard from a
recipient of Argus II. The U of M has provided 4
patients with the Argus II since last October when the
program was first started. The progress is astounding.
The Computer is smaller and attached to the side bow
of the glasses. The chip is behind the eye not in it,
which enables bypassing the eye. The signal from the
camera, the computer and the chip is transmitted
directly to the brain. The person closed his eyes and
could still see. WOW!!!
4. FYI, ca. 1,975 pairs of eyeglasses were taken to
Brooklyn Center and then taken to the MLVF
collection center in Sauk Rapids on July 18, 2015.
About half of these came from New Ulm. Lion
Vickie and I encourage all of us to collect as many as
possible because used eyeglasses mean so much to the
recipients. A great source is your local funeral home.
They often do not know what to do with the used
eyeglasses. Both of us are willing to take the used
eyeglasses to our meetings from where they go on to
those who need them.

the International Diabetes
Federation’s World Diabetes
Day! The MN Lions Diabetes
Foundation, Inc. is partnering
with four other statewide partners
including: the American Diabetes Association,
Novo Nordisk, Stratis Health and Walmart to
sponsor a Diabetes Awareness Day in eight cities
across Minnesota to participate in this important
worldwide event! Our goal is to create awareness
for pre-diabetes, provide diabetes education,
blood glucose screenings and to promote
available area resources for consumers. Lions
Club members in the Zone associated with the
host city locations of Bemidji, Brooklyn Center,
Dilworth, Duluth, Mankato, Marshall, Rochester
and St. Cloud are being asked to help promote
Lionism as greeters and volunteers for this Year
One MLDF event. Walmart stores will host our
event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. where consumers will
receive a passport to visit five kiosks with fun
interactive demonstrations and educational
activities to earn a great nylon back pack gift filled
with a water bottle, pedometer, jump rope and
stress ball! Each club in MN is being asked to
send a representative to the nearest event
location and get ideas for next year when Zones in
each MN Lions’ District will be encouraged to
sponsor a Diabetes Awareness Day. Our Year
Three goal is to have every club in MN host a
Diabetes Awareness Day in your community to
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Lions with this
great community service project! Please mark
your calendars and plan to join in the FUN! 1 in 4
of us is at risk for being diagnosed with diabetes.

The Slayton Prairie Days Parade held on Sat., Aug.

Lions guests of honor. Driver is
