At a minimum, workers provide access for pipe inspection, general overhauls and maintenance. A Flourishing Operation As an industry leader in development of the oil sands and energy production, Suncor’s goal is to continue to significantly increase its oil production and sales. Why Safway? Canada holds one of the world's largest oil reserves, and with Suncor's immense daily output, site maintenance is critical to ongoing operations. Safway Services teamed up with a consortium of companies, including Transfield Asset Management Services and Worley Parsons Colt Engineering, to provide scaffold management for Suncor's oil sands operation in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Suncor is relying on Safway's scaffold expertise to assist with: ■ Access for routine plant maintenance ■ Scaffold yard management ■ Access for pipe inspection ■ Total access management solutions ■ Access to assist with general overhauls ■ Support for emergency tasks sa Vice President of Operations for Transfield Asset Management David Videroni (far right) believes superior planning is the major factor in achieving success with scaffold partner Safway. Output from Canada's oil sands is as high as one million barrels per day. Production is expected to triple by 2015, and Suncor Energy is a key contributor to Canada's oil sands output. With more than 440 experienced scaffolders devoted to the Suncor project, Safway is providing scaffolding service and support for the entire site at all times, as well as management of the scaffold yard. Scaffold support is all-inclusive with superior project planning and execution, asset management services, and scaffold erection and dismantling services. When required, scaffold workers are also responsible for winterization, which necessitates protecting scaffold with tarps, as well as hoarding pipes and fittings to prevent freezing. fw ay .c om 3 With a reputation as a leader in scaffold services, Safway can provide highlytrained scaffold specialists capable of performing the necessary tasks, even in Canada's sub-zero winters. Canada's oil sands operations are flourishing, and experts believe their oil reserves are the world's second largest after Saudi Arabia. The Suncor project agreement was signed in March 2007. In that same month, the consortium began to ramp up its presence on Suncor's sites. Service delivery for the base plant began in late August, and delivery to the Firebag SAG-D project commenced in early October 2007. As part of an ongoing commitment to safety, trainees receive: ■ Scaffold training ■ Construction safety training ■ Market-specific training related to the gas and oil industry All efforts have focused on execution with an ongoing commitment to safety and reliable operations. Onsite, safety is extremely important when it comes to constant maintenance, especially in Fort McMurray where winter temperatures average -20° Celsius. sa Achieving Success With Suncor In conjunction with a consortium of companies, Safway is on site 24 hours a day to help Suncor meet the world's ongoing demand for energy. Safety in Numbers As with our involvement in any project, safety is a crucial factor in Safway's success. Scaffolders receive project-specific training before starting work onsite. Suncor's Fort McMurray site is equipped to dig oil sands at more than 40 meters below the surface to produce crude oil. Bitumen, a type of petroleum, is extracted from the oil sands and refined. With safety measures in place, the Fort McMurray site reported zero lost-time incidents in 2007. “To achieve more with less ... is what our cooperation with our scaffolding partner, Safway, is based on. ... In an industrial project depending on qualified labor, this is a challenge demanding excellent planning and prudent management.” David Videroni Vice President Operations Transfield Asset Management Services fw ay .c om The Right Scaffolding for the Industry Safway is proud to provide scaffold rental, erection & dismantle services, training, engineering, inventory and project management for industrial projects throughout North America.
