PUP Alumnus Hailed One of Ten Metrobank Foundation’s
Outstanding Teachers for 2012

amazing feats this year as Mr. Galcoso
C. Alburo, a graduate of Bachelor of Arts
in Filipinology in the College of Languages
and Linguistics, was chosen as one of the
Ten Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding
Teachers for 2012.

Alburo graduated in 1995 as a
consistent Dean’s Lister. He is currently a
Master Teacher I at Concepcion Integrated
School, High School Department in
Concepcion I, Marikina City.
The awarding ceremonies for the
Ten Metrobank Foundation’s Outstanding
Teachers was held on September 5 at the
Makati Shangri-la Hotel during the 50th
celebration of Metrobank Foundation.
Alburo is the first alumnus of PUP to be
awarded by the Metrobank Foundation’s
search for Outstanding Teachers.
House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte,
Jr. served as the guest of honor,
while distinguished officials from the
government, business, academe, and
diplomatic community graced the event.
Meanwhile, PUP President Dr. Emanuel
C. De Guzman congratulated Alburo for his
achievement, “This achievement by Mr.
Alburo epitomizes our untiring pursuit of
quality education that entrenches a good
social conscience to our countrymen. It
also affirms PUP’s place as an institution
that provides best education for this
nation’s middle and lower classes. May
our alumni continue to bring honor and
prestige to our dear Alma Mater.”
Recipients of this year’s awards went
through an intense screening process with
Alburo joined the elite group of 306
teachers in the Philippines whom the
Metrobank Foundation has honored in the
last 28 years.

CoEd Students Shine in
Interschool Competition
tudents from the College of Education (CoEd),
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
made the Polytechnic University of the Philippines proud
by winning in the Buwan ng Wika Interschool Competition on
September 1 sponsored by DAMLAY (Damdamin at Malay),
Inc., a national organization which gives importance to
language, literature, culture, and environment.
PUP Alumnus Hailed (from p. 1)...
Alburo’s message of acceptance was very inspiring. He
mentioned that as a candidate for Metrobank’s search for Ten
Outstanding Teachers, he was expected to speak in English all
throughout the competition in spite of the fact that he is a candidate
in the field of Teaching Filipino language. Alburo challenged the PUP
community to excel, engage and empower themselves so they can
make a difference in being a student, faculty member, and even an
alumnus.
Alburo thanked his fellow teachers for not surrendering in giving
what is best for their students. He addressed them by saying, “We
are who we are today because of your best efforts. I am a teacher
so I know how you really feel. I experience what you experience.
Intrigues are always there to challenge us but they should not stop
us. Together, we will mold our students and guide them as they
cross the bridge towards their dreams. Should this bridge break,
let us teach them how to build a new one. Let us take advantage
of the opportunity to do what’s good because time is running. Just
continue doing what is good, or else, not doing what is good is a
sin in Biblical sense. At the end of the day, let us call the pressures
of introspection and ask ourselves if we served our purpose in life
or if we have doubled the purpose. If none, get out of the system.
Money and prestige should not be the main reasons to work. Let
us not cause problems in the society; [let us not be] the rust that
damages the steel. Let us not be the cancer that ruins a system,
instead we must be part of a solution and [likewise], builders of
the society. Again, our beloved professors, treat your students like
plants that need water. In time, they shall bear fruits and shout that
they are fruits of our hard labor.”
The winners of the competition were declared and
awarded on September 12 at the Bulwagang Kapitan Moy in
Marikina City during the Fourth Year Anniversary of DAMLAY,
Inc. The winners of the contest are: Camille Ann L. Vistan
(BSED MT 1-1N), Champion, Photo Essay; Roselma Sipsip
(BSED EN 3-2D), Champion, Talumpati; Jonalyn Alforque
(BSED FL 2-1N), first runner-up, Talumpati; and Edeza Sinaon
(BSED FL 1-1), Bb. Buwan ng Wika.
The students received certificates and medals for winning
in the said categories. The students were trained and guided
by Dr. Jennifor L. Aguilar and Prof. Emelinda C. Layos, DAMLAYPUP advisers.
Meanwhile, BSED MT 2-1N students brought home the
championship trophy in the recently concluded contest in
Sabayang Pagbigkas, during the celebration of History Week
sponsored by the Department of History of the College of
Arts. n

The country’s largest state university
did it again!
Renan John S. Cañas of the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines bested 2,507
new Electronics Engineers produced
by the most recent Electronics and
Communications Engineering Licensure
Examination.
Cañas got a 97.6% rating in the
October 2012 Electronics Engineer
Board Examination administered by the
Professional Regulations Commission (PRC).
A total of 106 examinees from PUP passed
the said examination.
Earlier, Dean D. Gamay landed in 8th
place out of the 4,772 who hurdled the
October 2012 Certified Public Accountant
Licensure Examination which produced
526 new Certified Public Accountants for
PUP. Gamay registered a rating of 92.57
percent.

ECE Board Examinations takes part of its
winning streak in 2012 together with PUP
placers in Certified Public Accountant,
Mechanical Engineering, Master Electrician,
and
Nutritionist-Dietitian
Licensure
Examinations.
Mr. Alburo ended his message by reminding the students to
understand their teachers. He hopes that in the years to come, he
will see more PUPians as Metrobank Awardees. n

PUP Films Dominate
2nd PNP Film Festival

hand, placed 6th among the 2,026 who
passed the September 2012 Mechanical
Engineering
Licensure
Examination.
Ninety-eight PUPians became Mechanical
Engineers with Holgado on top of the list
obtaining a rating of 93.15 percent.

RME Licensure Exams
Benje A. Capistrano placed 10th in
the September 2012 Registered Master
Electrician Licensure Examination. He led
26 other PUPians who passed the board
examination that coincided with the
Electrical Engineer Licensure Examination.
One hundred and eight examinees from
PUP passed the Electrical Engineering
Examination.
PUP remains the country’s third top
nutrition and dietetics school after 70 of
its 82 examinees passed the NutritionistDietitian Licensure Examination held last
July 2012. PUP got a passing average of
85.37 percent in the examination; a rate
relatively higher than this year’s national
passing average of 67.08 percent.
PUP also managed to post a 66.22%
passing percentage as against the national
passing percentage of 50.69% in the June
2012 Architecture Licensure Examination
by producing 49 new architects out of 74
examinees.
Two entries from the Polytechnic
University of the Philippines bagged
several major awards in the recentlyconcluded 2nd PNP Film Festival last
August 7, 2012 at the AFP Theater, Camp
Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Alon, a film about a retiring police
officer, was hailed big winner taking
home eight trophies including the
most coveted Best Picture (Student
Category). Kidnap also shined in the Indie/
Professional Category. The film, directed
and written by Mr. Hector Barreto Calma
won two major awards: Best Editing and
Best Supporting Actor.
PUP, at present, boasts of 70,478
strong student population, 2,059 academic
personnel, and 685 administrative staff
across 22 branches and campuses in the
National Capital Region and ten other
provinces as University President Dr.
Emanuel C. De Guzman continuously
work to transform the 108-year-old state
university into an epistemic community.
Alon was produced by the PUP Film
Center (now Creative Media ServicesCommunication Management Office),
Lakandayang Cultural Association, Teatro
Komunikado, and PUP Film Society (now
CMAS). Aside from the Best Picture
Trophy, the following awards were
garnered by the movie: Best Director,
Luisito Antonio; Best Actor, Rener
Concepcion; Best Supporting Actor,
Cesar Batistis; Best Child Performer, Mark
Angelo Murillo; Best Cinematography,
Hector Calma; Best Musical Scoring,
Denise Gail Tumibay and Ivan Cadiente;
and Best Story/Screenplay, Kriztine Viray
and Gail Tumibay.

“Art is not only for the elite and for those who have the abundance of riches
and wealth.” This was the silent and subtle pronouncement of PUP artists
who recently bagged most of the major awards in three national painting
competitions in the country. John Mark Saycon, Aldrin Alarcon and Didier
Alarcon took home grand prize winnings in Everyone’s Vision Petron 2012, 45th
Shell National Student Art Competition, and 2012 Pigrolac Painting Contest.
The Everyone’s Vision Petron 2012, an annual art competition organized
by Petron Corporation and its parent company San Miguel Corporation,
was dominated by John Mark Saycon after being declared as Grand Prize
Winner in the Watercolor Category by a jury composed of mostly National
Artists like Benedicto Cabrera, Napoleon Abueva, and Abdul Mari Imao. His
winning entry entitled ‘Salamin ng Buhay’ captured the attention of the
judges because of its simplicity and powerful, yet clear content. Saycon
also won Second Prize in the First Pigrolac Painting Competition dubbed as
Pigtacular 2012.
Brothers Aldrin Alarcon and Didier Alarcon were declared Grand Prize
Winners (Calendar Category) in the recently concluded 45th Shell National
Student Art Painting Competition. The National Students Art Competition is
now the country’s longest-running art contest for students. It started as a
search for a suitable calendar subject in 1952. Some of the members of this
year’s jury are products of the competition. The Calendar Category judges
include Danny Dalena, Raul Isidro, Angelito Antonio, Raul Lebajo, and Edgar
Doctor. Another PUP artist, Alfredo Martirez was among the Top 6 finalists
in the same category.

Everyone’s Vision Petron 2012
Saycon, and brothers Alarcon and Martirez are all members and cofounders of Guhit Visual Arts Group, an independent group of artists who
are mostly from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. The artists are
also production designers/artists at the Creative Media Services Office. n

First in RP:
PUP Mobile Portal
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, a leader
in information and communications technology education,
launched the first school mobile portal in the Philippines on
September 24, third day of the Information Communication
Management Technology Conference at the College of
Technology (CT) Audiovisual Room, PUP.
Maintained by a team of Computer Engineering
Management Technology students who call their budding
homegrown company Orange Apps, PUP Mobile Portal is an
Android platform that provides users and guests free access to
the PUP website through their Android-operated gadgets.
EduPower Publishing Corporation in cooperation with the
Department of English and Foreign Languages and Linguistics
awarded Bachelor of Arts in English students Giselle B. Aranilla,
Lhea O. Villaluna, and Jenny Rose U. Cerdeña with the Best
Presentation Award for their entry in the Newsmaker Contests
2012 held at the Manila International Book Fair on September 6.
The awarding ceremony which was held at the CLL Multimedia
Center on September 28 was attended by the CLL Dean, Dr.
Evangelina S. Seril, CLL Faculty Association President Prof.
Carlos A. Garcia, and Ms. Agnes S. Apostol, Project Director of
ICT4Education, EduPower Publishing Corporation.
Dr. Seril, with the students’ class adviser Prof. Lillian S. Labay,
gladly accepted the certificates and the cash prize of the winners.
“[This gives] a taste [to our students] of what the corporate world
is like,” Dr. Seril said.
The theme of the On-the-Spot Newsmaker Contest, “Why is
it More Fun in My School?” was able to “…express the dynamism,
youthfulness, and creativity [of the students, which] we are
looking for,” said Ms. Apostol. n
PUP College of Technology student and Orange Apps
founder Gian Scottie G. Javelona explained that the PUP Mobile
Portal is an application that allows people to browse PUP’s
www.pup.edu.ph website on their mobile phones and tablets.
19-year-old Javelona is the inventor of the PUP Mobile Portal.
Javelona also said that students, faculty members,
administrative staff, alumni and other people could now access
enrollment applications, school records, account status, social
networks and events schedule through the PUP Mobile Portal.
Javelona presently serves as Orange Apps software
developer head while fellow student Paulo Beneloga is Assistant
Software Developer. Orange Apps also have Rosendo Javelona
as Company Manager, Jerwin Paul as Multimedia Artist, and
Kevin Guarin, Dennis Jacob, Andrew Cruz, and Luther Reyes as
support staff.
The students were mentored by Prof. Anthony G. Andres
who also serves as Product Manager of the PUP Mobile
Portal.

PUP turns 108
The Polytechnic University of the
Philippines recently marked its 108th
Founding Anniversary, a feat described
as an “historic occasion” by University
President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman.
Dr. De Guzman led the PUP community
in commemorating the establishment of
what is now the country’s largest state
university which began as the Manila
Business School in October 1904.
“Every founding anniversary is a
cause for celebration, nay, exultation,” the
homegrown Dr. De Guzman said.

“But in this particular instance where
we commemorate our University’s 108th
Founding Anniversary, we demonstrate
once again our vitality as dispensers of
the accumulated intellectual legacy of
mankind, our viability as a practical and
modern organization, and our integral role
in shaping the destiny of our nation,” Dr.
De Guzman explained.
This year’s Founding Anniversary
carried the theme “PUP: Great at 108,”
an allusion to the various achievements
of the Institution that boasts of 70,478
strong student population, 2,059 academic
personnel, and 685 administrative staff
spread in 22 branches and campuses in
the National Capital Region and ten other
provinces.
“If education is indivisible from the
growth and development of human
progress, the burden rests surely on the
shoulders of an educated citizenry,” Dr. De
Guzman added.
The month-long celebration entailed
an array of academic, cultural, physical,
medical and social activities that drew the
participation of the various sectors that
comprise the largest state university in the
Philippines.n
Spectacularly Great at 108:
Family 11 Tops 2012 University-Wide Academic Contests
Seven of the Polytechnic University of
the Philippines’ Branches and Campuses
composing Family 11 bagged the coveted
Perpetual Trophy as they won in the 2012
Academic Contests held from September
18 to 27 in celebration of the University’s
108th Founding Anniversary.
Family 11 is composed of PUP San
Pedro, Sta. Rosa, Biñan, and Calauan all
from Laguna, PUP Sto. Tomas, Batangas,
PUP Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro, and
PUP Maragondon, Cavite. Second in
rank is Family 8, a team up of the College
of Economics Finance and Politics, and

while Family 7, College of Arts and College
of Languages and Linguistics got the third
place.
The Opening Ceremony was held in
cooperation with the Federation of Alumni
Associations in PUP, Inc. last September 18,
2012, 8:00 AM at the Bulwagang Balagtas,
Ninoy Aquino Learning and Library
Resources Center. Dr. Joseph Mercado, Vice
President for Branches and Campuses, and
Overall Chairman of the 108th Foundation
Anniversary of PUP graced the event.

Rafael Michael O. Paz
of Economics, Finance and Politics, and
Chairman of the University Wide Academic
Contests 2012 with Co-Chair Dr. Zenaida
R. Sarmiento, College of Science Dean
presented the faculty members in charge of
each of the contests.
The closing program and awarding
ceremonies were likewise held at the
Bulwagang Balagtas. Dr. Evangelina S. Seril,
Dean of the College of Languages and
Linguistics served as master of ceremonies
for both the opening and closing programs
of the University-Wide Academic Contests
2012. n
Martinez Serves as
PUP’s 108th Founding Anniversary
Convocation Speaker
One of PUP’S successful graduates
served as convocation speaker in the
University’s 108th Founding Anniversary
on October 1 at the PUP Gymnasium
Eastern Petroleum Corporation President
Mr. Fernando L. Martinez addressed the
jampacked University Gymnasium and
proudly announced of his PUP heritage.
Martinez racalled that he became a
student of PUP in June 1972 when he got
a scholarship for garnerning the highest
score in the entrance examination of the
University, then called Philippine College of
Commerce (PCC). He also recalled that after
three months of being a student, Martial
Law was declared.
As officer of the Student Council,
he bacame active before and during the
turbulent years of Martial Law. He, however,
attended classes at night to work during
the day to sustain his education since his
parents had retired from their jobs.
Martinez proudly declared that
he became what he is now because of
dedication, perseverance, respect and
recognition of people regardless of one’s

status in life and advocacy of social
responsibility, and transformation.
In the celebration of the 108th
Anniversary of PUP, Martinez gave his
tribute and expressed admiration to the
people who continously make the State
University great, “Subalit kung mayroon
tayong dapat kilalanin at parangalan, at sa
hardin ng pasasalamat, ay pumili tayo ng
pinakamaganda at mabangong bulaklak.
Hayaan ninyong ialay at ibigay natin sa mga
professors, instructors, kawani at liderato
ng PUP na sa paglipas ng maraming taon ay
piniling maglingkod at magsakripisyo upang
ang daloy at pagtuklas ng karunungan ay
magpatuloy sa tinaguriang mga kabataang
Pilipino,” he said.
Meanwhile, Martinez also stressed
that the challenges of today are still the
questions of how to eradicate poverty
and to dismantle the unjust structures in
the Philippine society. He added that PUP
should be the fertile ground to address these
problems when he said, “Mula sa pagiging
kanlungan ng mga kabataang salat sa
yaman pero hinog sa katalinuhan, bakit hindi
nating gawin ang PUP na punlaan ng mga
kabataang may matuwid at makabayang
paninindigan upang maisulong at maitaas
ang antas ng kaunlaran para sa mas
nakakarami nating kabataan? Punlaan na
kung saan, ang tanging malulusog at piling
binhi ay aalagaan, palalakihin hanggang
maging puno o halaman na magbubunga ng
malusog na ani at puputol sa kagutuman.”
Martinez was the Centennial Awardee
of PUP’s Centennial Celebration in 2004. He
was also bestowed the Outstanding Alumnus
of the University for Public Administration
in 1994, and by the College of Economics in
2000. He was also an active alumnus of PUP
who served as Vice President of the PUP
Alumni Association from 1995 to 1999.
After the convocation, Martinez
also graced this year’s Faculty and
Administrative
Fellowship.
Faculty
members and employees competitively
showcased their talents through song and
dance numbers during the annual contest
of cultural presentations. This year’s theme
was cultural presentations by regions.
Raffle draws and bingo socials ended
the fellowship.n

Philippines gave due honor and esteem
to its outstanding faculty members,
administrative employees and officials, and
retirees as it holds Gawad Parangal Para
sa mga Natatanging Guro at Kawani at the
PUP Theater, College of Communications
Compound, October 2.
Among
the
top
hardworking
employees conferred were Dr. Victoria C.
Naval, Vice President for Academic Affairs
for her 35 years of outstanding service to
the University; Dr. Samuel M. Salvador,
Vice President for Academic Affairs, 40
years in service; Atty. Estelita W. dela Rosa,
Vice President for Administration who will
be retiring in February 2013; former Vice
President for Research, Extension and

UNAKA-PUP Holds First
Employees’ Day
PUP Great@108 Foundation Celebration
The Unyon ng mga Kawani sa PUP (UNAKA-PUP)
held its first Employees’ Day at the PUP Gymnasium,
October 3, 2012.
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ month-long celebration of
its 108th year ended last October 6, 2012 with a parade called “A Walk for
Greatness”. This parade aimed at honoring the people behind PUP: its students,
faculty members, administrative employees and officials who continuously
apply all their knowledge, skills and talents for PUP’s blessed and colorful
year.
Amidst the unexpected weather, the
administrative employees were all vibrant and
excited as they battled for the wins in various Pinoy
games like ball relays, tug of war, patintero among
many others.
The much awaited crowning of
the 2012 Mr. and Miss PUP and the
first Mr. and Miss ADFA was held on
October 5 at the PUP Theater, College
of Communication Compound. Joanne
Principio of Region 9 Cluster (composed
of PUP San Pedro, Sta. Rosa, Biñan,
Calauan, Sto. Tomas, Sablayan and
Maragondon) was crowned Miss PUP
while Paul Bryan Surita of Region
11 Cluster (composed of College of
Engineering and College of Technology)
won Mr. PUP.
Ms. Marlyn G. Del Rosario opened the day with
a prayer and Ms. Juliana D. Aguila lead the singing
of the Philippine National Anthem. Mr. Angelito
Celario delivered his Welcome Remarks, Mr. Samuel
S. Santiago, UNAKA President, set the objectives
for the day’s activities, and Prof. Alberto C. Guillo,
Human Resource and Development Management
Office Director gave an inspirational message.
Closes with a Bang
The Closing Program was held at the PUP Gymnasium. It began with the
doxology and singing of the Philippine National Anthem which was rendered
by the College of Communication (COC) Ensemble. A congratulatory message
was delivered by Dr. Juan C. Birion, Vice President for Student Services, for
the success of the 108th Foundation Anniversary of PUP. Three outstanding
graduates of PUP were also invited to deliver inspirational messages: Mr.
Noel C. Gonzales, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Corporate Holdings
Management, Inc., Mr. Fernando Martinez, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of Eastern Petroleum Corporation, and Brother Eddie Villanueva of the
Jesus is Lord Church.
The highlight of the event was a boodle fight
that everyone enjoyed.
The Closing Remarks was delivered by Dr. Joseph Mercado, Vice President
for Branches and Campuses and Overall Chairman of the 108th Foundation
Anniversary of PUP.

PUP Conducts Strategic Programming
The Polytechnic University of the
Philippines officials, with University
President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman,
graced the 2012 University Strategic
Planning Workshop, Phase 3: Strategic
Programming from September 10 to 12,
at the Acacia Hotel Manila, Alabang,
Muntinlupa City. “It is an honor to address
an audience such as you today, particularly
in this occasion of the third and final phase
of the Strategic Planning [Workshop] of
PUP, in which we are going to chart the
destiny of the University. It is in our hands
that this destiny lies,“ said Dr. De Guzman
in his welcome address to the participants
of the event.
Dr. De Guzman shared his plans for
PUP, “I think one of the best strategies to
radically change an institution like PUP is
for the people to have a collective shift,
a shift in the way of looking at things - a
paradigm shift…We change reality by
changing the way we look at reality itself.”
“We have to interrogate the culture
that we have now so that we can get out
of certain parochialism - looking at things
from a small perspective. We are part of
a bigger world and that world is changing
faster than we are going,” Dr. De Guzman
also encouraged everyone to change and
do what is right for the University.
Dr. De Guzman did not fail to give
homage to the leaders of PUP who
came before him, “PUP is standing on
the shoulders of giants, I can say – past
presidents, officers-in-charge, and all the
other leaders who contributed to what PUP
is now. We can build on that, we can build
on the contributions of our past leaders.”
Dr. De Guzman’s Welcome Remarks was
succeeded with Vice President for Finance
Ms. Marissa J. Legaspi’s announcement of
the members of the sectors who will work
on PUP’s Strategic Plan for 2012-2016.
Executive Vice President Dr. Victoria C.
Naval came after recapitulating the outputs
from Phase 1 - Stakeholder’s Consultation
and Phase 2 - Strategic Visioning of the
workshop. Phase 2 was held on September
4, 2012 at the Accenture Function Room,
PUP Main Building. Dr. Manuel M. Muhi,
Vice President for Research, Extension,
Planning and Development on the other
hand, delivered the instructions in
conducting the workshop and defined
terms crucial to the development of Phase
3’s outputs. Human Resource Management
and Development Office Director Prof.
Alberto C. Guillo delivered a talk on
Executive Order No. 80 and Administrative
Order No. 25 which marks the end of the
morning session of the first day.
The by-sector ‘writeshop’ continued
that day with the following leading each
sector: College of Education Dean Dr.
Milagrina A. Gomez and Vice President for
Academic Affairs Dr. Samuel M. Salvador
in the Academic Sector, VPREPD Muhi in
the Research Sector, Vice President for
Student Services Dr. Juan C. Birion in the
Student Services Sector, Vice President for
Administration Atty. Estelita W. dela Rosa
in the Administrative Sector, VPF Legaspi
in the Finance Sector, Vice President
for Branches and Campuses Dr. Joseph
Mercado in the Branches and Campuses
Sector, and EVP Naval and President de
Guzman in the Local and International
Linkages Sector.
The second day of the event started
with the output presentations of the
groups and a fellowship before the day
ended. The third day was facilitated by the
Roldan’s HRD Philippines.

on serving some 70,000
students in 22 campuses
while at the same time
carving a career for us –
for each of us.”
The day commenced with Dr. Antonio
C. Roldan, Jr., Managing Director of Roldan’s
HRD Philippines’ discussion of how a
contingency plan may be the key to PUP’s
success.
A ceremonial turnover of each sector’s
outputs during the two-day writeshop was
presented to Dr. De Guzman. This activity
aimed to show each of the participants’
commitment to the plans and strategic
objectives they have drafted which will
be implemented in the University for four
years. They were also asked to sign on a
symbolic space shuttle that represents PUP.
With the support and commitment sharing
of the PUP Community, the space shuttle is
expected to soar and succeed.
Several important speeches were also
delivered: each of the vice presidents, Dr.
De Guzman, Dr. Roldan all thanked the
participants for sharing their skills in the
strategic planning of the University. Mr.
Noel C. Gonzales, PUP alumnus, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of Corporate
Holdings Management, Inc., and President
of the Acacia Hotel Manila pledged his
support to PUP, “I think it is time for PUP to
scratch everything and start from zero and
move forward; dream big because I know
— this came from Dr. Prudente (former PUP
President), “We might be a small College
today — and that was 1972 — but we can
be the biggest university in the country,” and
it became a reality. Now the challenge is to
make the biggest University in the country
the best University. That’s the challenge of
you guys today, and I am willing to assist you
in whatever capacity that I can to reach this
next goal…It is not true that only Ateneans
and La Sallians and millionaires can put up
a five star hotel. A small graduate from PUP
can do it. As a University, being the biggest
and the best University is not impossible.
All we have to do is work hard, of course
dream, work hard, work together, and then
you will see, it is not impossible.”
The three-day Strategic Planning
Workshop Phase III ended with a community
singing and distribution of the participants’
certificates of participation.

MTBMLE
PUP Employees Affirm STAR
QUALITY Service
Bachelor in Secondary Education Students of the College
of Education held a lecture forum on Mother Tongue-Based
Multilingual Education (MTBMLE) last October 11, 2012 at the
PUP Tahanan ng Alumni, Mabini Campus. Dr. Catherine M.B.
Young, Associate Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics
Philippines served as Resource Speaker.
More than a hundred Polytechnic University of the Philippines
frontline administrative employees attended the seminar dubbed
“Building the University’s Culture: Imbibing the Values of Human
Relations and Quality Service” last October 5 and 6, 2012 at the
Accenture Function Room, PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Two batches of frontline employees were handled by Mr. Ed S.
Teovisio, Founder and President of Confluent Management, author
of the book “The Eight Streams of Confluent Learning to Personal
Effectiveness,” and notably one of the many PUP successful alumni.
The seminar is aligned with University President Dr. Emanuel
C. De Guzman’s Eight-Point Agenda recognizing the significant roles
of administrative employees not only in fulfilling their day-to-day
functions but in becoming great image-builders of the University.
The seminar aims to give the employees new perspectives about
their work and its various facets in relation to the service culture of
the University; to inspire employees with a new level of understanding
and appreciation of their roles in carrying out the vision, goals and
philosophy of the University; and, to equip the employees with new
knowledge and techniques in practicing positive human relations and
building a renewed service culture for the University.
The Communications Management Office, in cooperation with the
Human Resource Management Department Office, Communication
Management students of the Open University System, and Public
Information students of the College of Communications collaboratively
work in making the program a success.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Vice President for Administration
through the HRMD, in cooperation with the Unyon ng mga
Nagkakaisang Kawani ng PUP (UNAKA-PUP) sponsored a two-week
review classes for the PUP employees who took the Civil Service Career
Examinations for Professional and Sub-Professional Levels on October
21, 2012. English, Mathematics, Science, abstract reasoning and
number sequencing, RA 6713 Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards
for Public Officials and Employees, and current events are just a few of
the subjects covered in the review classes held at the Information and
Communication Technology Center-Phase 2 Conference Room, Ninoy
Aquino Learning and Library Resources Center, PUP from October 8
to 18, 2012.
“These review classes will help employees to prepare for the
Civil Service Examinations. Although I keep reminding them that
these review classes will not be the primary factor in passing, but
through diligent studying, perseverance, psychological and physical
preparations, and prayers that our Almighty God will give us His
blessings and graces to overcome difficulties and hardships before and
during the examinations,” HRMD Director Alberto C. Guillo explained.
He also expects to achieve a hundred percent passing rate from the
PUP examinees.n

COC, CHK, and CoEd: Overall
Champions in the 2012 University
Intramurals
Exhibiting their might in nearly all sporting events, students
and faculty members comprising Cluster 4 finished with 101 and
80 points to capture the overall championship plum in the two
week-long University Intramurals held last September 14 to 28,
2012.
Dr. Young discussed concepts, characteristics, and issues
concerning the implementation of MTBMLE in the Philippines.
According to her “MTBMLE acts as a bridge in the transfer of
previous learning experiences when students’ transition to
learning the languages of wider communication. Rather than
becoming alien in the child’s culture by teaching a language foreign
to them, the use of the mother tongue as medium of instruction
would serve as a tool to develop a sense of identity to a minority
language community.”
Dr. Milagrina A. Gomez, Dean of the College of Education
awarded the token of appreciation to Dr. Young. Dr. Ma. Junithesmer
D. Rosales, Chairperson of the Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education supervised the organization of the event.n

In the six sporting events, athletes from the College of Human
Kinetics, College of Communication, and College of Education
showcased their strength and superior athletic expertise when
they finished 1st runner up in basketball, badminton, and chess
for the students and champion in Administrative Employees and
Faculty Volleyball (men and women).
Completing the Top 4 finishers in the students’ level were
Cluster 8 (College of Cooperatives and College of Economics,
Finance and Politics), 1st runner up with 70 points; Cluster 2
(College of Engineering and College of Technology), 2nd runner
up with 68 points; Cluster 13 (Bataan, Cabiao, Pulilan, and Sta.
Maria) 3rd runner up with 61 points.
Other teams that fared well in the faculty category were
Cluster 2 composed of the College of Engineering and College
of Technology, and Cluster 7 represented by College of Arts and
College of Languages and Linguistics that finished 1st and 2nd
runners up, respectively.
In the administrative teams, White Team (Hasmin Hostel)
imposed their will in almost every sporting event after finishing
strong with 65 points to cap the overall championship award.
Among other teams that showed their athletic prowess and
pushed the championship to the limit were the Red Team
(Medical and Dental Services Office) and Black Team (Human
Resource Management Department) after they compiled 55 and
47 points, respectively.n
IPOPHL VISITS PUP-ITSO
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL)
team, headed by Dr. Carmen G. Peralta, Director of Documentation,
Information and Technology Transfer Bureau and Ms. Aurelia Go,
Intellectual Property Rights Specialists III conducted an evaluation
visit of the PUP-ITSO last September 24, 2012.
The visit commenced with a courtesy call and brief conference
with University President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman and Vice
President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development Dr.
Manuel M. Muhi. PUP-ITSO Technical experts Engr. Faustino Rural
and Prof. Ofelia B. Villamor assisted the IPOPHL team in their initial
visit.
This visit is part of a series of IPOPHL’s nationwide visit to ITSO’s
of various institutions form Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.n

GMA NEWS TV, PUP LAUNCH LEARNIVERSITY
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines and GMA News TV launched the
first Learniversity at the Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy Aquino Library and Learning
Resources Center on September 28.
Learniversity is a project initiated by the GMA News TV in partnership with
PUP, through the Communication Management Office, Career Development
and Placement Office and the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.
It was a potpourri of various events: career talks, variety shows, games, and
exhibit booths. Crash courses on business, broadcasting, hotel and restaurant
management, and information technology were also conducted.
Ms. Kara Patria David, a recipient of PUP’s Gawad Apolinario Mabini Award
and known TV reporter, graced the event by sharing her thoughts and experiences
about broadcasting and media production to an overly enthusiastic audience
of about eight hundred students from the College of Communications, College
of Education, College of Computer Management and Information Technology,
College of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management, and College of
Business.
The event was made colorful and fun by the hosting of GMA comedians
Maey Bautista, Ramon Bautista, Tonipet and Betong. Betong, whose career
shined after winning the top prize in the reality game show Survivor Philippines,
proudly announced that the event was an homecoming of sort for him because
he was a graduate of the University’s Bachelor of Arts in Filipinology program.n

SciTech Conducts Solid Waste Management and
Water Analysis at Barangay 591
The SciTech Research and Development
Center in cooperation with the College of
Science conducted environmental studies
and solid waste management projects
at Barangay 519, Manila on September
6, 2012. Dr. Lorna T. Enerva with a group
of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry II-2
students distributed plastic bags and copies
of a primer on solid waste management to
assist in the proper segregation of garbage

and in informing the public on the different
methods of solid waste disposal.
This project of the SciTech aims to
inform the residents of Barangay 519 of
the effects of indiscriminate throwing of
garbage. Some of these harmful effects are
different diseases like cholera and dengue,
clogged drains that bring floods, and
toxic air pollutants that leads to asthma,
bronchitis, and lung cancer.
Meanwhile, the same group also
conducted water analysis to determine
the presence of E. coli (Escherichia coli)
and other coli form bacteria that may be
present in drinking water on the same
venue on September 17 to 18, 2012.
This project is a continuing project of the
SciTech since 2001 to safeguard the health
of the residents in Barangay 591.n

faculty members, staff and constituents
of the municipality of Ragay, Camarines
Sur crammed the gymnasium of the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines –
Ragay Campus on September 6, 2012 for
the grand forum on House Bill No. 4820
“An Act Creating The Province of Nueva
Camarines” dubbed Anatomy of the H.B.
No. 4820.
PUP Hosts Math Max 2012
Math enthusiasts from various tertiary schools recently
trooped to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for the
seventh year of Math Max, an annual math competition open to
all undergraduate college students in the country. The competition
was held on October 6, 2012 at the Bulwagang Balagtas, Ninoy
Aquino Library and Learning Resources Center, PUP Mabini Campus
in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
Prof. Myrna Cruz, contest organizer and Chairperson of the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics mentioned that 108
contestants from 23 universities and colleges cracked mathematical
problems in Algebra, Geometry, Calculus and Differential Equation.
Ephraim Jobneel M. Eisma of the University of the Philippines
emerged as the overall winner after beating second and third
placers Jose Enrico D. Leceta and Jonathan Wong both from the
Ateneo de Manila University.
Twelve contestants who topped the elimination round
advanced to the semifinal round. Two contestants from the host
university, Mark Joseph O. Batas and Darwin M. Tacubanza, made
it to the semifinals.
The top three finishers were given P15,000, P10,000, and
P5,000 in cash prizes. They also received trophies from PUP
College of Science Dean Dr. Zenaida R. Sarmiento, Math Max 2012
Chairperson Prof. Aurea Z. Rosal, and Prof. Cruz.
Prof. Servando Bernardo of the Mapua Institute of Technology
acted as chair of the Board of Judges. Two other judges from
the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila – three-time Math Max
champion Mr. Percival Byron Bueser, and Mathematics Teachers
Association President Prof. Aileen A. Diansuy comprised the Judges’
List. Prof. Lara Rolan and Engr. Oscar Polyapoy acted as quizmasters
while Prof. Rosal served as master of ceremonies.n

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines expressed their support and
participation in the 2012 International Day of Peace in festivity through the
annual Cheer Dance Competition held last September 21, 2012 at the PUP
Gymnasium.
In a message delivered by University President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman
to the PUP Community, he committed the support of all PUPians in the pursuit
of peace and advancement of human rights as the occasion also coincides
with the commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law 40 years ago.
“Tatlong bagay po ang ating ipinagdiriwang sa araw na ito: liban sa
pagkakaisa ng ating pagiging pamilya ay ipinagdiriwang natin ang araw
ng pandaigdigang kapayapaan, International Day of Peace. Ngunit kasabay
ng pagdiriwang na ito ay ang pag-alala sa Martial Law. Dapat natin itong
alalahanin dahil sa mga [taong] nakipaglaban rito ay utang natin ang
kalayaang tinatamasa sa kasalukuyan.” said Dr. De Guzman
Aiming to inform and raise the
awareness of the people regarding
the issue, the Public Administration
Department, in collaboration with the
Supreme Student Council of the University,
organized the forum. It also served as a
venue for the students and the constituents
of the municipality to raise their questions
in relation to the proposed division of
the province of Camarines Sur. Mr. Sandy
Juan Paolo M. Rubio
Maxquint F. Latonio, Executive Secretary
to the Mayor of Ragay, presented the
salient points, advantages and rationale of
the proposed division. On the other side,
Hon. Warren A. Señar, Board Member of
Camarines Sur, delivered his arguments
opposing the proposal.
Mr. Latonio pointed out in his
presentation that H.B. No. 4820 is in
compliance with the legal requirements
provided for in the Local Government
Code of 1991, particularly the criteria for
population, land area and income. He
also cited historical accounts of divisions
of provinces in the Philippines and
stressed the growth and development of
the previously divided provinces. As the
highlight of his presentation, he stated
that the division will create two first class
provinces that will benefit the constituents

of both areas. The opposing side, on the
other hand, believes that there is no
compelling reason to divide Camarines Sur
and carve out a new province. In contrast,
Hon. Señar pointed out that the creation
of the new province will be uneconomical
and the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) of
the provinces will be significantly reduced,
thus, affecting the delivery of services to
the people.
After the controlled open forum, a
random survey was conducted in order
to determine the pulse of the university
students. The survey revealed that 74 or
27% of the 279 total respondents are in
favor of the division while 205 or 73% are
against the proposed division. It was also
found out that 217 or 78%, the majority of
the respondents, are aware of the issues
related to the division.

“Sa PUP ay palagi nating pinapangalagaan ang ating mga karapatan, at

Gawin po nating lahat ito bilang isang pamilya at bilang isang komunidad,
akademiko at palaging tinitingala ang ating mga sarili bilang mapagmahal sa
bayan at sa ating Sintang Paaralan,” Dr. De Guzman ended.
Cluster 7 (College of Arts and College of Languages and Linguistics)
triumphed in this year’s Cheer Dance Competition while, the 1st runner up
was awarded to Cluster 12 (PUP Parañaque, Quezon City. San Juan, and Taguig
Campuses) and Cluster 4 (College of Communications, College of Human

PUP Holds Lecture Series on Nationalist
Economics, Launches Exhibit on Islam
The Community Relations and Extension Services Office, in cooperation with
IBON Foundation, Inc., a non-government research institution, held a lecture series on
nationalist economics dubbed PAKSA: PUP Aralin para sa Kaunlaran ng Sambayanan on
August 31, September 14, and September 28, 2012 at the Information and Communication
Technology Center Laboratory 1, Ninoy Aquino Learning and Library Resources Center,
PUP.
PAKSA aimed mainly at popularizing the state of Philippine economy and promoting
alternatives to globalization. It featured Mr. Rimando E. Felicia, head of IBON People’s
Education Resource Center, who focused on “Mga Isyu at Usapin ng Ekonomiyang
Pampulitika” during the August 31, 2012 lecture. IBON Executive Director Jose EnriqueAfrica tackled “Repormang Agraryo at Pambansang Industriyalisasyon” on September
14, 2012. Ms. Rosario Bella Guzman, IBON Executive Editor, discussed “Nasyunalismo sa
Panahon ng Globalisasyon” on September 28, 2012.
PAKSA was attended by almost a hundred students from the College of Arts and
the College of Economics, Finance and Politics. It was co-sponsored by the National
Economic Protectionism Association, Alliance of Concerned Teachers, and Institute for
Critical Studies and Inter-Disciplinary Forum.
Meanwhile, Dr. Divina T. Pasumbal, Center for Peace and Poverty Studies Director
organized a week-long exhibit on Islam in partnership with the Billah Islam Community
Organizing and Rural Development, Inc.
The exhibit, which highlighted the theme “Discover Islam: Relevance of Muslim
Struggle for Peace,” was launched three weeks before the signing of a preliminary
agreement aimed at ending the 40-year war between the Government and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front on October 15, 2012.n

College of Communication’s (COC) Young Communicators’ Guild (YCG), in cooperation
with the COC-Student Council, Communication Research Enthusiasts (CORE), JournGuild
and Broadcircle, Dr. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, Communications Management Office Director
and YCG Adviser, and Dr. Edna T. Bernabe, COC Dean successfully spearheaded the UNTV
Klasrum Tour last October 2 to 5, 2012 at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
COC Compound.
UNTV is a television channel “devoted to the enrichment of life through alternative
yet intelligent programs that aims to delight and turn the much-needed shift in Filipino’s
television lifestyle” (untvweb.com).
The highlight of the UNTV Klasrum Tour is the “Students’ Hour” awarded to aspiring
students who dream to experience live broadcasting on-air together with respected news
anchors of UNTV Radio La Verdad 1350, Mr. Jeck de Ocampo and Ms. Annie Rentoy. The
newscast focused on issues inside and outside the University.
Free seminars were also offered by UNTV to all COC students who are willing to
learn basic skills in scriptwriting, radio reporting, video editing, television directing, and
photojournalism.n

(KME) conducted its first dialogue
series on National Economic Justice at
the Bulwagang Bonifacio of the Ninoy
Aquino Learning and Library Resources
Center, Polytechnic University of the
Philippines, October 8, 2012.
The program started with an
opening prayer by Sr. Agneta L. Lauzon,
SFIC of St. Joseph’s College and Ms.
Emlyn Santos of the University of
the Philippines. The singing of the
national anthem was conducted by
the PUP Serenata and was succeeded
by Dr. Victoria C. Naval, Executive
Vice President’s welcome remarks.
An orientation of what KME is was
delivered by Mr. Jaime A. Regalario,
KME President.
The speaker for the morning’s
event was introduced by University
President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman.
Several other activities ensued
after the brimming speech delivered

Relations (ILIR) recited a poem entitled

and Dr. Ernesto Gonzales; Prof. Hilda
Felipe-San Gabriel delivered the
closing remarks; and, Mr. Muadh
Molina of Billah Islam gave the final
blessing.

Feature Story
Students, faculty members, and
staff of the College of Human Kinetics
describe him as amicable, soft spoken and
dedicated which contradicts his stern look,
muscular physique and brusko image. The
name Ronald “Lambert” Guiriba became
synonymous to Philippine swimming
competitions; his name and records are
always acknowledged in every swimming
event as champion and record holder.
It was during his father’s time as
a swimming instructor and swimming
coach at the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines when he began to discover
his passion and talent in swimming at the
University swimming pool. He was five
years old then and the PUP swimming pool
served as his second home.
He was only seven years old when he
first joined swimming competitions; he was
then studying grade school at Paco Catholic
School. Two years later, young Lambert
travelled to Hong Kong to join the “Hong
Kong Mantas Swimming Championship”.
He bagged five gold medals in the said
competition and was also listed as a game
record holder in the fifty meters butterfly
stroke which he still laudably holds up at
present.
His streak in setting game records
extended at the Palarong Pambansa
in 2000. Lambert led the powerhouse
National Capital Region Team to the overall
championship and won six gold medals in
record-breaking performances in six events
he participated in. To date, four records are
still unbroken.
Lambert is considered a wunderkind
in the Philippine swimming event since
he was young. From 1997 to 2002, he
was a member of the RP Youth Team. He
competed in the Southeast Asian (SEA)
Games and Asian Age-Group swimming
competitions. In his career as a member of
the RP Youth Team, he hauled five gold, two
silver, and three bronze medals.
The Sydney Experience
In 2000, Lambert went to the land down
under. He saw the splendid metropolis of
Sydney, Australia which was then preparing
to host the 2000 Olympic Games. Lambert
was among the first to try the Olympic
Swimming Facility when the Pacific School
Games was held in the same country. The
facility was later used in the September
2000 Olympic Games.

A PUPian’s
Pool Tale
The Pacific School Games, according to
Lambert was participated by 42 countries
and is held every four years like the Olympic
Games. Among his accomplishments in the
tournament was winning the 50 meters
men’s butterfly of age 12-13 bracket, thus
ending the domination of the Aussies in the
said event. It was also at this time when
Lambert started high school.
He finished his campaign in Sydney
with a gold medal in 50 meter butterfly, a
silver medal in the 100 meter butterfly, and
a bronze medal in the 4x50 relay medley on
his neck.
Philippine Team Member
His first tour of duty for the Men’s
National Team was in the 2003 SEA Games in
Hanoi, Vietnam. Lambert was fifteen years
old then. During his first attempt in SEA
Games, he only fell a fraction of a second
short to stand on the winners’ podium. He
had the same fate in the 2005 SEA Games
in Manila.
The Accident
Joining the Olympic Games is every
athlete’s foremost ambition. Two weeks
before Lambert’s departure to Thailand
to join the 2007 SEA Games in Nakhon
Ratchasima, 20-year old Lambert got
involved in a motorcycle accident. His
injury caused his campaign to win a medal,
and most importantly his dream to don the
country’s color in the Olympic Games to
wane.
As he missed what could have been
his third stint in the SEA Games and the
Olympics, he thought of retiring from
swimming and focus on his studies at PUP
instead.
Lambert retired in 2008 but left
an indelible mark in PUP and in the
State Colleges and Universities Athletic
Association-NCR as the most decorated
athlete in the SCUAA history slinging 27
gold medals and a silver,aside from his five
gold haul in the Philippine Association of
State Universities and Colleges National
Games in 2007 and another five gold at the
Commission on Higher Education National
Games.
From Stroking to Striding
Being a tanker for almost 20 years,
Lambert decided to try-out for the
Philippine Water Polo Team in 2008. Water
polo is known to be a more physical sport
since every player must stride their feet
continuously on water to keep on floating.
The game is officiated by a referee and calls
are based on what the referees see on top
of the water.
Lambert’s first tour of duty upon
his inclusion in the National Water Polo
Team was in the Asia Pacific Water Polo
Tournament in Singapore. The team won
the silver medal yielding to the eventual
champion and regional powerhouse
Singapore.
The team proceeded to the Middle
East in 2009 and joined a tournament in
Kuwait with 13 other nations coming from
South America, Africa, Asia, and countries
from the Caribbean. It was an outstanding
campaign even though the team fell one
place short for a medal.
Lambert and his team became busy in
2009 as they competed in the Singapore
Open Water Polo Championship and
won a bronze medal. The said event was
participated by seven countries. In the SEA
Games held in Vientiane, Laos in the same
year, the team won a silver medal bowing
to Singapore that was almost dethroned
because of Lambert and his team’s
outstanding performance.
His last duty for the Philippine Water
Polo Team was in 2011, almost two
years after earning a Bachelor in Physical
Education degree. The team went to China in
preparation for the 2011 SEA Games hosted
by Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia.
In the team’s campaign in the biennial
meet, a three-way tie in second position,
a quotient system and win-over the other
team was applied to determine the medal
place. Thailand got the silver medal and the
home team won the bronze.
Going Back to the Sintang Paaralan
When Lambert graduated in 2009, he
was hired as Head Coach of the Miriam
College Swimming Team that competed in
the Women’s National Collegiate Athletes
Association Games. The Maria Katipuneras
placed 1st runner-up under Lambert’s
training.
After two years of hardwork in Miriam
College, Lambert resigned from the Miriam
College and applied in PUP for a teaching
position. Armed with international
experiences and trainings, he eventually
landed on the position previously held by
his father, the late PUP swimming coach
and Professor Ronaldo Guiriba.
Now, Prof. Ronald “Lambert” Guiriba
continuously works hard to make his plans
for the PUP team to regain its glory in the
SCUAA a reality.
“Proud ako na sa swimming pool
ng PUP ako nag-umpisang lumangoy at
lumakas, I owe all my achievements to
PUP.” Professor Guiriba concluded.n
