SPONSORED BY Little Rock Dermatology Clinic Beginning in 1986, Open Arms Shelter began providing emergency safe housing for Arkansas’ children who have been abused and/or neglected. These children range in age from birth up to 18 years of age. Open Arms is one of the few emergency shelters in the state that will accept children under the age of eight, teenage mothers with their children and large sibling groups. Through the years, thousands of children have come from all areas of the state, but the majority of the children are from central Arkansas. In addition to a room, the children receive three home-cooked meals a day, snacks and around the clock supervision by our highly experienced staff. The children attend public school, receive individualized behavior instruction and management plus receive instruction on basic life skills. Recognizing the need to mentor teens for a longer period of time and teach them independent living skills and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed in adult life, a new wing was added in 2011. Today, Open Arms Shelter has the ability to serve 24 children at a time whether by emergency or long-term care, depending on the needs of children under the care DHS. Children come to our facility from every imaginable type of crisis. It is not unusual for a child to hide food because they have grown accustomed to not knowing when or where their next meal will come. Many times a child will arrive in tears because of their tragic situation and then leave in tears because Open Arms Shelter was truly the only caring environment they have ever experienced. The stay with Open Arms may provide the basis for hope that will stay with them and positively influence them for a lifetime. Open Arms Shelter serves not only as a steppingstone for children in Arkansas awaiting placement in foster homes, treatment facilities or with relatives, but also long-term care and as a critical source of education, rehabilitation, love, attention and discipline. Although the new addition affords Open Arms Shelter the privilege of serving more children, the cost of building the new wing has placed the Shelter in debt. Thank you for supporting Open Arms Shelter by attending this important fundraiser. If you would like to do more for the children of Open Arms Shelter, please contact Nancy Hamlin, Executive Director (501) 676-6166 or e-mail oashamlin@sbcglobal.net. While serving children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, our needs are never ending. If you believe in the mission of Open Arms Shelter, please consider donating monthly with needed items such as food or paper products or contribute financially to this private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Open Arms Shelter is licensed by the State of Arkansas. Your tax-deductible donation will help insure that children in need have hope for a better tomorrow. Tom and his wife, Leigh Ann, live in Little Rock with their daughter, Sophia. Jose Sarduy Jose takes audiences on the rollercoaster ride that’s been his life. Born in Cuba and deported because of his father’s political prisoner status, he came to the U.S. at a young age. Growing up with a hard working, and always quirky, Cuban family brought loads of funny moments everyday. From his mom’s ability to kill a chicken with her bare hands, to his dad’s ability to hit on any woman, anytime, there was never a dull moment. What they did best was teach him to work hard for his dreams, and not forget how to laugh at life and himself. He made them proud when he was accepted to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. He became an officer in the Air Force, is an accomplished aviator, and is a veteran having served in Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. His comedy career started out in New York and Philadelphia. He performs all over the country now and is rapidly becoming an audience favorite for his ability to make deportation, and life threatening moments hysterical. He was selected for the 2007 Latino Laugh Festival in Los Angeles, and the Lucky 21 Contest at The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. In 2008 he won the Funniest Person In South Texas Comedy Competition and was a semi-finalist in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. In 2009, he was a finalist in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. In 2011 he was the winner of the Rocky Mountain Laugh Off in Salt Lake City, UT. He’s been seen on CNN, CBS, Fox, and Lifetime’s “Coming Home” with his touring group, The GIs of Comedy. Most nights you can find him on stage somewhere, but one week a month, its all dog tags and volleyball, down in Texas, helping teaching the next generation of top guns. 9 Celebrity Scary-oke Performers (listed alphabetically) Governor Mike Beebe - Special Performance Since taking office in 2007, Governor Mike Beebe has made improving education, expanding Arkansas’s economy and cutting taxes top priorities. Arkansas has avoided the massive cuts in services and tax increases suffered by other states while achieving more than a half-billion dollars in tax relief during Governor Beebe’s first term. A champion of education and economic development, Governor Beebe has overseen Arkansas’s rise in national education rankings and the announcement of more than 26,000 new jobs. He has helped conclude the lengthy court dispute over Arkansas’s public-school system, secured the largest single capital investment in Arkansas public schools, and made record investments in higher education. He has expanded adult-education programs, and worked to match colleges and universities with local businesses to produce a better-trained workforce. Born in Amagon, Arkansas (Jackson County), in 1946, the Governor earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arkansas State University in 1968, and completed law school at the University of Arkansas in 1972, while serving his country in the U.S. Army Reserve.
