TANITA TIKARAM ANNOUNCES FIRST ALBUM IN
EIGHT YEARS
Tanita Tikaram, A Voice That Defined A Generation,
Is Returning With Her First Album In Eight Years
~2CD To Be Released In North America September 4~
New York, NY (July 24, 2012)—Tanita
Tikaram, multi-million selling British singer
songwriter, who shot to fame with her awardwinning album Ancient Heart in 1988,
featuring hit songs “Twist In My Sobriety” and
“Good Tradition”, returns with her seventh studio
album Can’t Go Back, to be released in North
America on September 4 via earMUSIC
(Edel)/Eagle Rock Entertainment [MSRP $15.98
for 2CD, $13.99 Digital Audio].
Tikaram was inspired by her new found love of
Americana, by the union of country and soul by
Motown and Chess, and by singers such as Sister
Rosetta Tharpe, Dusty Springfield, Don Williams,
Paul Simon and the long-lost Marie Knight. It proved to be a musical
homecoming for the German-born, UK-raised daughter of Fijian/Malaysian
parents. The final result is a warm, uplifting convergence of Tanita's fabulously
sensual voice with a live soul groove.
The album features some of America's most exciting modern soul musicians, and
was lovingly crafted by producer Paul Bryan (Aimee Mann, Grant Lee Phillips,
Nina Nastasia) at Sound Factory in Los Angeles.
The musicians included Bryan himself as well as keyboardist Keefus Ciancia
(B.B. King, T.Bone Burnett, Elton John, Everlast), Ray LaMontagne's drummer
Jay Bellerose and long-term friend and guitarist Mark Creswell. Folk singersongwriter Grant Lee Phillips contributes guest vocals.
The first single, “Dust On My Shoes”, was made digitally available on May 11 via
iTunes, followed by the “Dust On My Shoes” video release on June 21:

"I've always wanted to write a song like 'Dust On My Shoes,' which will be the
first single and is a simple freedom song,” says Tanita. “The word 'freedom'
becomes more and more important to me - in every choice , every political &
moral decision. The attempt to live in a free way I find very moving. Hopefully, on
the album you hear it in the playing, too!! Can’t Go Back is the song that best
sums up the spirit of the album ...the desire to live in the moment & the
temptation to revise the past. I can’t wait to get out there and start playing the
new songs to everyone!"
Signed to a major label as a teenager after being spotted at an acoustic night in
West London, Tanita Tikaram's debut album Ancient Heart, released in 1988,
sold over five million copies and established her as a major worldwide artist.
Tikaram was defined by her unique voice and her direct and haunting selfpenned songs such as “Twist In My Sobriety” and “Good Tradition” -- folk pop
songs written as an escape from her studies. After Ancient Heart, she built a
formidable, widely respected body of work that is reminiscent of Laura Marling,
Adele, and Gillian Welch among others.
