THE ADULT SWIM ISSUE The Official Summer Guide Cover Takisha Henderson Photographer Paul A. Greene Makeup/Hair Samantha Boyce Stylist Brandi Lewis Assistant Stylist Carey Blake Tiesia Whitfield Wardrobe Syeko Design House +love notes I know some super talented courageous people. I’m so proud of them. Baltimore Rocks! If you don’t know this to be true you have surrounded yourself with uhm… lackluster people. I’m cool if you are cool. But if you complain that your city, your world isn’t progressive and is negative you need to: [STEP 1] DREAM. Add some magic to your days. Activate your imagination. Eliminate a small-thinking existence that's centered around the mundane or uneccessary drama. [strategy] Create a "like" list. Create a "I'm good at this" list. Create a "I wish I could" list. When you recognize your real desires it will trigger your purpose. Start searching for opportunities and activities that will let you test these likes, talents & wishes. [STEP 2] NETWORK. Expand your horizons. It's the company you keep. It’s not too late. I’m not talking about entering the celebrity life either. The pursuit of stardom is not the key to happiness. Join a social club or seek an association that will help your career/ dream. Find a hobby, explore a new place, support a cause, volunteer, mingle with people who are active and doing something. [insight] You’ll discover that extraordinary can exist within ordinary (perceived) people. Just because you haven’t heard about them doesn’t mean exciting and life changing adventures are not popping off. There are different scenes with different people. Test the waters. You’ll be surprised. [STEP 3] APPRECIATE Once you discover great people be inspired by them. Don’t be envious of their success. Be inspired to work on yourself and see their example as GOD’s love in action. [meaning] Invest time in discovering your purpose NOT mimicking another person’s purpose. Invest love into yourself– heal the hurts, remove the baggage, remove the hurdles blocking your movement/progress. Love yourself. Treat yourself like you are indeed your favorite person; the precious child in you not the spoiled brat. Invest in learning and building. When your heart, mind & soul is positive your FAITH can be unwavering and your work will be blessed and fruitful. The conditions of your life can improve tremendously. Never settle. Be your own magic genie emerging through the smoke of life's golden lamp, cite your wishes with confidence, and make them come true. Voila. Magic. The Flywire 7 Naked without Protection? By S. Washington +finance PROTECT YOUR FINANCES In the article “Know Your Worth” we addressed seeing where you stand by calculating net worth and creating a budget. After you figure out where you stand, now you can work on some basic goals to help build a financial safety net. Here are a few tips so you won’t be caught without protection in the event of an emergency.. Manage your debt. You are spending more than you’re making if you calculated a negative net worth and the main culprit is DEBT. It is important to use credit wisely. Everyone believes that credit is bad but it isn’t if you use it properly. REDUCE CREDIT CARD DEBT Here are a few tips to reduce credit card debt. • Pay your high interest debt first that don’t have any tax deductions because this is sucking up most of your money. • Pay down debt rather than spreading it around. • Apply for a low interest loan to use for paying off existing credit cards and consolidating multiple accounts. It is important to shop around for the best rates before submitting an application. • Pay your bills on time to eliminate any additional fees. This will also help with building a good payment history on your credit report. • Check your credit report annually from all three agencies, Experian, Transunion and Equifax. Review your report closely and dispute any fraudulent charges.Visit www.annualcreditreport.com to request a copy of your credit report. Credit reports are free but you have to pay for the score. CREATE EMERGENCY FUND Create an emergency fund. What would you do if you lost your source of income? It is important to save towards an account that has three to six months’ worth of living expenses. This will help out in the event that you become ill, lose your job or any other unforeseen emergency. You don’t want to gamble this money in the stock market. It is important to save this money in a conservative account such as savings or money market deposit because these types of accounts are appropriate if you need the money quick. You may want to consider having at least $1,000 in your bank account for immediate emergencies. GET INSURANCE NOW Protect what you have with appropriate insurance. It is important to protect your income by having adequate insurance such as life, medical, car, disability and renters/homeowners. This will manage risk for you and your loved ones. Insurance is not as expensive as you think and a quote won’t cost a penny. Many companies provide financial security for families through insurance. Some offer high risk insurance to people who would normally be uninsurable as well as those with preexisting medical conditions. Also explore life insurance that offer many different benefits such as cash growth, memberships for fraternal groups and additional child care benefits. Additional products include key persons insurance, specialty insurance, and property and casualty that are tailored towards your needs. There are many options to consider. PLAN FOR RETIREMENT NOW Invest for Retirement by saving in your company’s retirement plan or an IRA. Pension plans are slowly dying and the idea of relying on social security is a part of history. I know retirement may seem like a long time away for most of you but the earlier you start the more you can potentially have. There are many companies that offer IRA’s such as your local bank, T. Rowe Price, Vanguard, Fidelity or any full-service investment firm. Retirement plans and IRA’s are smart ways to grow your money and cut taxes at the same time. If your company offers a retirement plan, then you should take advantage of the opportunity to reduce your taxable income. If your company offers a company match then it would crazy not to take advantage of getting free money for doing something that is for your benefit. If your company doesn’t offer a retirement plan then you can set money aside in an IRA. The contribution limit for 2012 is $5,000 if you are age 49 and under. If you are 50 or older, you can contribute an additional $1,000 to the account. If you are considering opening an IRA, then a ROTH IRA is a great option if you are eligible. FACTS ABOUT ROTH IRA Generally, you can contribute to a Roth IRA if you have taxable compensation and your modified AGI(Adjusted Gross Income) is less than: • $179,000 for married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er), • $122,000 for single, head of household, or married filing separately and you did not live with your spouse at any time during the year, and • $10,000 for married filing separately and you lived with your spouse at any time during the year. • A lot of companies are starting to offer ROTH contributions in 401k plans. A ROTH 401k and a ROTH IRA is not the same thing! • You are responsible for opening up the ROTH IRA on your own and the ROTH 401k is offered by your employer. • There are not any income limitations for contributing to a ROTH 401k. • If your company offers a ROTH contribution option in the 401k plan then you may want to consider investing in that over a ROTH IRA because most companies will still match ROTH 401k contributions. Please check with your 401k plan provider for more information. • Contributions in a ROTH IRA will not have any impact on your ability to contribute to a ROTH 401k. • ROTH IRA contributions may be eligible for a tax credit. Please consult your tax advisor for additional information. These are a few simple steps to help with creating meaningful wealth. These actions will help to make sure you are protected in the event of an emergency. The Flywire finance team will continue to provide information to increase your financial independence. Make sure you pick up a copy of the next issue. Why? Because we want your financial picture to be as fly as you! +trendsetter DESIGNER OF THE YEAR FASHION AWARDS The inaugural ceremony of the 2012 Fashion Awards of Maryland honored Evgenia Luzhina-Salazar as the Fashion Designer of the Year. Tamaris” and Lil’ Mo The Flywire 17 Taking Care of Show Business FROM MOTOWN TO HOMETOWN By Nikia Wainwright Vaughn Photo: Paul A. Greene In the Hip Hop/R&B music and entertainment industry, one would usually define a BOSS with the likes of P-Diddy, Russell Simmons and TI. Even in 2013, it is still hard to picture a woman in charge in this male dominated business. However, with the new genre of reality television such as Love and Hip Hop,Tiny and Toya and R&B Divas, viewers got a chance to get a peep behind the scenes. We see women like Yandy Smith, Toya Wright, Tiny Harris and Faith Evans are also bosses. And in Baltimore, we celebrate the legacy of our very own Tracye Stafford, who has dominated the hip hop concert and event production scene for years. Tracye Stafford, a Columbia, Maryland native and Hampton Institute graduate (now known as Hampton University,) has always loved music. Tracye’s musical roots began singing gospel in the group “The King David Singers” at First Methodist Church where her mother officiates. While attending college, Tracye was an intern at Motown Records one of the greatest record labels of all time. She worked for Motown in Los Angeles, California. “It was exciting to be in the same building with the best musical artists in the world such as Janet Jackson, Stevie wonder and the Debarge. Imagine working in the same building with a music mogul like Berry Gordy?” said Tracye. Tracye successfully completed her internship and was hired by Motown after graduation. Eventually, MCA Records would buy Motown and Tracye pursued other opportunities. Tracye had the opportunity to work at WDAS Radio in Philadelphia as well as CBS Sports. Tracye was living her dream in the entertainment industry and had no intentions of ever returning to Baltimore. However, someone needed her by their side and she had to come home. Tracye’s father had become ill, and she came home to be with him before he passed away. Tracye’s Baltimore business ventures began with producing celebrity parties. Her first big successful party was a cast party for the highly acclaimed HBO series, The Wire hosted by Hassan Johnson aka “Wee-Bey”. The party created a buzz for Tracye and artists started to call her. Tracye loved producing celebrity parties, but her love for music and especially Hip-Hop and R&B music is what she had a passion for. In 2004, Tracye decided it was her time to indulge her passions and booked her first concert at Sonar headlining the girl duo Floetry. The show was a hit and Tracey’s name became all the buzz for concert promotion too. That same year marked the greatest moment in her career. Rapper Lil Wayne’s album “Tha Carter” had just dropped. Lil Wayne aka Weezy had the streets on fire and yes, Tracye booked him. Tracye not only brought the hottest artist of the year to Charm City but formed a very valuable relationship with Cash Money Records. Originally, Tracye worked through booking agencies to get artists. However, after forming great relationships with artists and management, she eliminated booking agencies. She created a brand associated with professionalism, class and business savviness. Tracye’s dream was taking off and was booking shows that brought out thousands of fans to the Baltimore Arena. Her artists included Gucci Mane, Gotti, Lil Wayne and Baby. She was proud to be able to book artists that “Batimore fans loved!” Eventually, Tracye was able to save up enough money to establish her own venue to book artists such as Jeezy, Rick Ross, TI and Nicki Minaj. Tracye became co-owner of The Velvet Rope. She worked with the nation’s top promoters. The club’s celebrity roster included the most popular Urban stars including Nene Leakes, Drake, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Lil Kim, Trey Songz and more. Tracye had built such a solid reputation, that The Velvet Rope became the hottest spot in Baltimore for R&B and Hip Hop artists to perform. The Velvet Rope would eventually change its name to Dubai, but the venue and platform stayed the same. The building was sold and Dubai closed its doors on New Year’s Day 2013. Tracye, the only female concert promoter in Baltimore, is here to stay. Right now, there are a lot of things in the work. While she is mum on what’s in store, Tracye is confident that it will be another successful venture. When asked to define success, Tracye says that having family, love, God, Jesus or whatever higher being you believe is what is important. “To have love, the Lord and blessed with a career without feeling like you are working. That is what music has done for me,” shared Tracye. Tracye resides in Maryland and is the proud mother of her 21 year old son Corry. So to be clear when in search of the definition of a boss, Tracye Stafford is a true Boss. Photo by Paul A. Tried to hide it away but you took the time to help me unpack From the choices I've made I'm surprised that you stayed. I had to take the time to thank you for that." www.marcellrussell.com The above lyrics from "Baggage" performed by Marcell Russell speaks volumes about the condition of a man's heart and spirit. Neo Soul singer and songwriter, Russell is "The Voice" of Baltimore. His voluminous voice, reminiscent of old school crooners, takes the listener on a soulful journey with every song. No empty lyrics over here. His upcoming album "Serenade and the Sermon" will be released this summer. New single "Abuse My Mind" from the upcoming album flips the script of normal love songs and features a taboo subject of domestic abuse. Men who are abused in relationships. Let the controversy begin. Music lovers can expect good music... really good music- truth telling, too close for comfort, love, sexy and healing music. For a sneak peek into the new sounds of Marcell Russell, see the "Baggage" video featuring prominent Baltimoreans, promoter DeJuan DHov and comedian Larry Lancaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtPdntx2l-U The Flywire 20 of se x new york city museum +destination MUSEUM OF SEX 233 Fifth Avenue (@ 27th Street) New York, NY 10016 212.689.6337 MUSEUM HOURS Sunday – Thursday: 10am–8pm Friday & Saturday: 10am–9pm Closed Thanksgiving & Christmas Adults (18+): $17.50 Students & Seniors: $15.25 by Patricia Taft N ext time you’re in the Big Apple, stop in for a visit to the Museum of Sex. On the corner of 5th Ave. and 27th Street, what appears to be just a bookstore from the exterior, once inside, reveals a back stair that leads to a 3-level display that explores the history of human sexual intercourse and how it has been depicted in TV, film, and even cartoons over the years, with one entire floor devoted to that of animals. Did you know that the blow hole of a porpoise could double as a vagina? And you couldn’t have guessed that Bambi was into threesomes. A visit may reveal to you that the sexual appetites of all sexual beings are not too different. Let’s just say it was eye opening to watch a turtle get his rocks off on a rock. No, this is not for the demure. It is all out there close up and personal, every position on display and in motion, from homo, hetero and solo sex all the way down to sex between dragonflies. And, if watching sex scenes and pornography of all types, as well as viewing and reading about the tools and tricks that will lead to the ultimate in pleasure doesn’t get you hot, visit the OralFix bar in the basement that serves up all sorts of aphrodisiacs in a space that is conducive to “getting to know one another better.” The Museum of Sex gets the thumbs up just for pure edusexual value. Go and enjoy. But please, as instructed as you enter, “do not touch, lick, stroke or mount the exhibits”. The Man The Brand The Legend the quicksiLVa story Y By Brandi Proctor Photo: Paul A. Greene ou know him as a Party Boy, a Ciroc Boy, your drive time DJ and the one who makes you throw your right hand up on the dance floor screaming “Ayyyyyyeeee! That’s my shhh…” He spins in clubs seven nights a week, yes, seven. He deejays on the Russ Parr Morning Show on weekdays and on WKYS 93.9 during the evening drive time. He travels to other states several times a month and you can catch him on BET’s 106 and Park weekly. With a schedule like that it’s no wonder he lives by three simple words…hard work, dedication and consistency. But there’s more to “Quick, Quick Silva” than meets the eye. Let’s go back a few years… January 1990. THE BEGINNING ends before a night spinning at Hammerjacks turned into something major. A radio executive heard his set, saw the crowd’s reaction and said, “This guy belongs on the radio full-time.” At 20 years old, he had his own show on X105.7. LOOK MOMMA I MADE IT QuickSilva was living the dream. He had money to blow and he did. He did what any man his age would’ve done. Paid rent, bought clothes, shoes and his favorite cars. Fortunately, he knew he had to be smart with his money. After all, it was his first job with a salary and benefits. So, he bought a house. He went to closing on a Tuesday. Three days later, X1057 went off the air. His world came crashing down,,, again. Imagine the biggest house party of the year, more than 100 kids packed in the basement. Lights off, music thumping… Unlike most 20-somethings…Quick didn’t have anyone to behind the DJ table stood a 10 year Roberto Silva aka Rico fall back on. At ten he lost his mother to cancer. His father newly known as DJ QuickSilva. The party is off the hook, the tap is in full effect… Kid n’ Play on the dance floor… cabbage patching all around the room when “BOOM.” The speakers blow. A bad fuse is the culprit, and the young DJ isn’t prepared to replace it. The crowd, that was just rocking with him began to boo… “Booooo Boooo. Get a new DJ.” The birthday girl was is in tears, yelling at the crowd to leave her cousin alone. A young DJ QuickSilva wanted to cry himself but had to be tough. The party was ruined, the crowd was hostile. The experience would’ve been enough to break anyone’s spirit, especially that of a ten year old. But not that DJ. He had a point to prove, a reputation to defend and a love for the craft that nothing, not even failure could break. got him his first set of turntables after her death. He had DJ Quicksilva was determined that feeling he had that night, thrown himself into music at such a young age to help cope. he’d never feel again. From that, a legend was made. By 14, At 13, Rico was at the wrong place at the wrong time and a student at City College, he was in Club Indigo every Satur- wound up getting shot in the back. Doctors, told him, he’d day. When radio station V-103 needed a fill-in for DJ Boobie never walk again. He successfully beat the odds. Yet, at 18 in 1998, DJ QuickSilva was their man. He also did weekends years old, his father and backbone also passed away. He at 92Q for two years and worked at a record store to make and his brothers were forced to be men.Quick had to make Quick had to make it. Failure was not an option. The Flywire 38 it. Failure was not an option. He had learned at a young age, how quickly things could turn around. He says, “When life happens, it happens the same day. Here today, gone tomorrow.” Here he was, 21 years old with a mortgage, several cars and only three months of severance pay to make ends meet. He uses the term “flat broke.” He had $200 in savings and $100 in his checking account. He bought a new car every year from 16 to 21. QuickSilva stepped outside that day and said, “I’ve got all these cars out front and no money in the bank.” He promised himself he’d never be in this situation again money wise. So far, 12 years later, he hasn’t broken that promise. “I’m financially stable now... I’ve done smart things with my money. I’m still okay and my family’s okay.” A call from Lil Mo helped shape his future. She said I’m doing a tour, what are you trying to do? Quick said, with no job, no kids and no girl…the answer was clear. Yes. The tour got him national exposure and helped make the legend we know today. Quick was picked up by Pepsi. That was just the beginning of endorsements and recognition. He was hired by WPGC 95.5, where he spent five years. Being born and bred in Baltimore, the transition to neighboring D.C. wasn’t nearly as easy as it seemed. Although the cities are just 40 miles apart, there might as well be worlds between them. The style, people and overall culture are different. WELCOME TO CHOCOLATE CITY “I can’t come and act like I’m from D.C.” said Quick. “I can’t say “Joe” and wear HOBO. That’s a clown, you can spot a clown a mile away.” His first party was at Zanzibar. He admits he was struggling with the crowd, “The first thing I said was, ‘Everybody that’s NOT from D.C., make some noise!’ The crowd erupted! Now I got some confidence. My boss told me not to say that again. I told him I know what I’m doing now.” Don’t come to D.C. trying to be D.C. It’s like Manhattan in New York city, in downtown D.C. ninety percent of the people are not from D.C. They went to school there, got a job there but they’re not Washingtonians. I said, “let me win over tourists...cause I’m a tourist.” The method was ingenious and stuck. He even coined a new phrase. “I would never disrespect D.C. I’d shout out Howard, I’d shout out Baltimore cause they always support me. I started noticing a lot of people saying, ‘Quick represents for the whole DMV.’ It used to mean D.C., Southern MD, and Northern VA. I opened that up to be all of Virginia and all of Maryland including Baltimore. I started representing for the masses. Some of the hate started wearing off. I never claimed I’m from D.C. I show love but I’m from BMore. At The Flywire 40 the same time, I live in and love D.C. If you show love long enough people can’t deny it.” That ability to bring people together landed him a job on WKYS 93.9, where he’s spent the last six years. It has also helped him win numerous awards locally, nationally and even worldwide. “Locally over the last ten years I think I’ve won every award I was nominated for. DMV’s most popular, most in demand.. Fab Empire, Flywire, etc. On the national level, my most memorable was the 2006 East Coast DJ of the year. This was at the Power Summit where all the Big DJ’s were guys I grew up listening to like Funk Flex, DJ Clue. I wasn’t from New York, nobody thinks of BMore as having a huge DJ. I didn’t think I had a chance of winning,”said Quick. HUSTLE, HUSTLE, HUSTLE HARD QuickSilva realized that he had enough support to make a name for himself in the competition. His friends and supporters took to email and MySpace with a campaign. You could only get one vote per computer, so a hustler at heart, Quick figured out how to get the numbers to work for him. For the next three months, he worked his plan. “Office buildings have hundreds of computers. My Aunt works at State Highway Administration. I went to her job first, I brought them lunch. I said, I need yall to vote and tell your friends and family. I did that for three months, anywhere I knew had a lot of computers I would just go. We used to send out message that said ‘click here to see naked pictures of Beyonce. Then it’d say, HA! We got you, but now that you’re here, vote for DJ QuickSilva.’ I remember being there when they announced the categories… when they said East Coast DJ of the year….that five seconds he paused seemed like a year. I’m like just spit it out so I can know I lost already, then he said it, DJ QuickSilva! Everybody from DC and Baltimore started clapping, I said what the hell just happened? I won!” That was just the beginning, since then there have been awards upon awards, but he reached the ultimate goal when was chosen to get the Global Spin Award--the “Grammy” of DJing in 2012. Unlike the East Coast DJ award, the Global Spin Award was not chosen by fans, rather by peers. Some of the biggest names in the music industry, record representatives and label execs made up the academy. They decide who will walk away with the coveted title. There are DJ’s nominated worldwide, not just urban, not even just American. He was up for Breakthrough DJ of the Year, it’s someone who’s been around, but this year has really taken off. “Puff introduced the whole Global Spin Awards… so that’s major. 2012 Global Spin nominees are, they said my name. Sway from MTV announced the winner, he stands up ‘The winner is…talk about well deserved, this guy’s been putting in work, DJ Quick Silva.’ When I say my heart fell in my foot, I couldn’t move. My manager’s like, ‘get up, get up! You gotta go up there!’ I’m sweating! I’m giving fives to legends on my way up. I look out in the crowd and I re- member hearing my friend screaming out ‘Hometown we did it’ I felt like this is unbelievable, somebody from the hood in BMore just won a GLOBAL spin award. We don’t make it out of the hood, unless you play basketball or a sport. Not DJing, it’s unheard of. I thanked God for keeping me around, I thanked my wife and my son. I say this award meant the most because when you’re congratulated by the people who party with you and your friends and family it’s big. But when you’re congratulated by peers and people you grew up listening to and look up to, wow. These people saying QuickSilva this is your year. That’s big. I can’t even explain that. My manager said you know what you’re not a local DJ anymore. That’s crazy to me, because to me I’m no different than other DJs that started in Baltimore. You have legends in this room. Grand Master Flash, Kid Capri, legends of Hip Hop. They think this highly of ME?” Somebody from the hood in BMore just won After accepting the award, being able to breathe and compose himself, the first call Quick made was to his number one supporter and cheerleader, his wife, Mrs. Ashley Silva. “Baby, you’re not going to believe this, I won! She started screaming!!! ‘I’m so proud of you’” QuickSilva is now a household name. He’s on a syndicated radio show in the morning, and on the evening ride in one of the biggest cities in America, daily. “I travel four or five times a month. My manager and I still trip. We can’t believe that people in Charlotte know who I am. People in Miami, people in New York know who I am. That’s a dream! Now, the dream is real. I really DJ in New York once a week. These are things a kid from East Baltimore dreamed of. Travel the world to get paid to do something you’d do for free anyway because you love it! It’s humbling. It’s a blessing. I think of all I had to go through to get to where I am, somehow, I made it.” So what was it? How did QuickSilva make it? THE INSPIRATION “I lost my parents at a young age, Mom at ten and Dad at 18. Before, I had to impress my parents. I couldn’t give up because I couldn’t let them down. I couldn’t let myself down. Once I got married, everything is for my family. It makes you work harder when you have a family. Now that I have a wife and a son and daughter, everything positive I do affects them. They get to do things that growing up I couldn’t, because my parents didn’t have the money.” BEHIND EVERY GREAT MAN With a schedule like QuickSilva’s it leaves him running like crazy. He’s on the radio every day and in the club every night. He has loads of fans and supporters, it’s enough to boost any man’s ego. But at home, is where he gets brought back down to size. “My wife is so supportive. The kids and the house are well taken care of. She helps and motivates me all while running her company, IAmSuperGorge.com. I don’t know how she does it all. I don’t care how big I get, she always looks at me as the same guy she met more than 10 years ago. She keeps me grounded because she doesn’t ‘QuickSilva’ me. To be on tv one minute and then come home to, ‘Baby take the trash out and change the diaper genie when u get back in’ is humbling. We don’t have maids or anything like that. My grandmom and my brothers, they keep me in that space where I can be Rico sometimes… The guy before QuickSilva. HARDWORK. DEDICATION.CONSISTENCY While many people struggle to get through a 40 hour work week, look forward to lunch breaks and happy hours. QuickSilva doesn’t know what any of those things are. He’s what his manager calls a machine. He will be on the radio at 8am, hop on a train to NY to DJ 106 and Park, come back to be on WKYS, DJ a party in DC until 3am and be right back up at 7am to take his son to school. He works days like that, straight, no sleep, no complaints. Just his motto. “Even with the level of success I have, I’m not lazy. I like work. That’s what I like to do. My wife does get a little irritated sometimes but it’s gotten me to the place I’m at. I can wake up today and plan a vacation Wednesday and leave Friday. Nobody can say Quick just got lucky and got on or got hot... I work!” He will work himself to the point where his body will tell him it’s time to rest. He won’t sleep for 20 hours for three days straight. At CIAA, he did 9 parties in three days. The reason was simple.“If I didn’t do it, somebody else would have.” After that he was able to come home and take two days off. “Having success means nothing if you’re not healthy. I stayed off and stayed with my family for two days straight. It means a lot to me when I can do nothing, stay home and watch reruns of Good Times and The Wire. Those are the times that I live for.” NO SUBSTITUTE FOR HARD WORK In the era of social media, people don’t believe it unless they see it. The life of a DJ looks fabulous. He’s always at the hottest events, taking pictures with celebrities and pouring Ciroc! But for every two minutes of glamour, there are eight hours of hard work. “A lot of people see the glam side of me. They see me on BET once a week and hear me on Russ Parr and wonder, why is he so tired? They don’t see the hours of planning, marketing and branding that’s helped me separate myself. They don’t see I was in three planning meetings. I do conference calls with four national sponsors every day. I don’t just show up in the club, I have to make sure my set is prepped, the music beds have to match, etc. The work ethic is so important. A lot of people want fame and money, but they’re not willing to put in the time. Success takes time. Take Beyonce for example, she’s iconic. She’s been doing this everyday for 25 years, but she still practices every day. Becoming Beyonce was the fun part, staying Beyonce is difficult.” AN OUNCE OF PREPARATION “Always be prepared. I can still hear the boos of those kids 23 years later. I’m glad I didn’t give up then. It was an ego buster. I went home and my Dad told me it was a lesson. If I had another fuse I would’ve been able to fix it. He told me to make sure I always have extra fuses, an extra set of needles and headphones. Today the equipment has changed, but I’m always prepared. I always have a backup. I still remember that feeling that day in my cousin’s basement, that’s why I work so hard.” WORDS OF WISDOM Lots of aspiring DJ’s see QuickSilva’s success and strive to be like him. More than his success is the struggle involved in his story. His motto hard work, dedication and consistency is a way of life for him. In order to achieve his level of success, you must put in his level of work. “They want success so fast. It takes time, most frustrated people quit. Most people who started out when I did, quit. The easy thing to do is quit. I’d tell the young DJs take your time, relax, when it happens it happens. When the faucet is dripping, once it comes out it, it flows. You can’t just turn it on and the bathtub be full all at once, sometimes you have to start over and regroup.” THE NEXT CHAPTER After 23 years in the field and worldwide notoriety it seems that DJ QuickSilva is sitting on top of the world. He’s made his city, his family and his parents proud. So what’s next for the man who it seems has accomplished it all? “What’s next, I can’t answer cause I’m having so much fun where I am. I told my manager by forty maybe I can retire. I’ll DJ when I want to, not because I have mortgages to pay. Now with the kids getting older, I want to have more time. I commend my wife. I say I couldn’t deal with me! How she puts up with a husband who’s on the road and in the club every night I don’t know. Now I want to get to the point where I can be at everything. I never want to miss a basketball game or ballet recital. Family is the one thing that appreciates you when you’re Rico. This is my family, they are my life. DJing is my job, my family is my life. My son still says I’m his hero. When he says that it hits the heart in ways you couldn’t imagine. I see him and see myself. He calls himself DJ Budd Buddy. He started five years before I started at age 5. I have a son that mimics anything I get into, so I have to make sure it’s the right thing.” Ray Lewis told Quick that when you change your thought process you change how you react to everything. After losing both parents, overcoming being shot, having the rug pulled from under him by losing a job and nearly losing his house taught him life lessons early on. “When I’m gone I want my legacy to be first, that I was a great husband and dad and that means the most. People can say QuickSilva was a hustler. Not in a bad way of drugs or hustling people, but that he knew what he wanted and went out and got it. Not one person can say they put me on. I want people to be like he put in the work. He had drive and passion, he worked. That’s what I want people to say this guy put in the work to get everything that he has.” When talking to him at 33 years old, QuickSilva comes off as a young man, wise beyond his years. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders and came through with flying colors. He’s successful, hardworking, focused and humble. All he can do is win, QuickSilva put his city on his back and has the whole DMV behind him. Hardwork, dedication, consistency. I’m not going to say it’s paid off…it’s paying off.
