2010 Program
Monday, June 21 A one-day festival of over 1,000 free concerts in parks and streets citywide A guide to Play Me I’m Yours, NYC’s street piano project The streets are alive with the sound of music! Make Music New York is back for a fourth year, with over 1,000 free concerts in public spaces throughout the five boroughs of New York City, all on the first day of summer. On Monday, June 21, from 10 in the morning until 10 at night, musicians of all ages and musical persuasions — from hip-hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock — will make music on streets, sidewalks, schoolyards, stoops, plazas, cemeteries, parks and gardens. As always, concerts are performed by anyone who wants to take part, and enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend. In cooperation with the City of New York, this year’s MMNY features an incredible array of special events. From the visionary percussion music of Iannis Xenakis surrounding the Central Park Lake pg.5, to a New Orleans-style jazz parade pg.13, “Take Your Musician To School Day,” 130+ bands of Punk Island pg.14, and guitar-slinging office workers of Play Hard pg.13, there is something for every listener. And many ways to make music yourself: bring your instrument and join a Mass Appeal event , sit down at a Play Me I’m Yours piano pg.7, or explore interactive music technology in the Meatpacking District pg.12. For full details, consult this guide, or visit makemusicny.org for late-breaking updates! 2 INTRO Von King: Bandshell Marcy Ave & Lafayette Ave Barretto Point Park Tiffany Street & Viele Ave 7:00 Diabolique streetwise indie rock Crotona Park Bandshell 1:00 Slowest Runner (in all the World) post-Baroque with a rock setup 3:00 Lon Kaiser solo improvised piano music 5:00 Lauren Jacs dark & melodic 6:00 Bryant Smith Gospel hip hop 7:00 Dan Patch rock trio digs deep Crotona Ave & Claremont N 5:00–9:00 Lynne Watson and Positive N-ergy versatile R&B cover band DreamYard Art Center 1085 Washington Ave 6:00 Folklore Urbano pianist Pablo Mayor leads high-energy ensemble, with danceable and subtle modern Colombian music. Sunday, June 20. Governors Island. 10–5. Free. Punk Island returns for a third year in 2010, with more than 130 of the country’s loudest bands transforming the ordinarily quiet Governors Island into a daylong punk / hardcore paradise. Bands will perform on 17 stages scattered around the island, as free ferries transport revelers from Lower Manhattan and DUMBO to Governors Island every half hour, beginning at 10 am. Because Governors Island is closed on the day of Make Music New York, Punk Island will take place the day before, on Sunday June 20th. Just like the rest of MMNY, all performances are outdoors and completely free. Punk Island begins at 10 am and ends at 5 pm sharp. Free ferries leave every 30 minutes from the Battery Maritime Building in Battery Park, Manhattan, and every 20 minutes from the Fulton Ferry Landing in DUMBO, Brooklyn. No alcoholic beverages, pets, or weapons are permitted on Governors Island. Punk Island is curated by Miguel “Slug” Torres of Fat Bastard Productions. 1 Rotten Apple Stage No Redeeming Social Value, Hub City Stompers, Last Call Brawl, Hooliganism, Oxblood, Feet First 2 Foo’s Stage Destroy Everything, Dirty South Revolutionaries, The Corporation, FreakTent, Dude Man Bro, She Likes Todd, Demo, Crash Fist Fight, Shred Scare, Wifebeater 3 Seizure Crypt Stage Seizure Crypt, Straphangers, Caught in a Trap , Olde York, Bloodbeat, Endangered Feces, Trauma Team 666, Yo!
