of Carter County.
In addition to
Jack Cannon
his parents, he
was preceded in
death by his brother, Rev. K. Charles
Cannon.
A World War II Marine Corps veteran,
Mr. Cannon made landings with the 4th
Marine Division on Saipan, Tinian,
Kwajalein and Iwo Jima.
He is survived by his wife of sixtyseven years, Doris Macauley Cannon;
sister, Elsie Jean Crowe and husband,
Bob; son, Dale and wife, Joni, Johnson
City; son, Blair, Knoxville; son, Wade
and wife, Jan, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Tara Thomas and husband, John,
Kyle Cannon and wife, Melinda, Brandon
Cannon and wife, Meg, and Brittany
Cannon; great-grandchildren, Elijah and
Elizabeth Thomas, Molly, Jack and Luke
Cannon.
The Requiem Mass for Mr. Cannon
will be on Thursday, September 26,
2012, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of St.
John’s Episcopal Church with Father
Harry Shaefer officiating.
Interment will follow in Happy Valley
Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Kyle
Cannon, Brandon Cannon, John
Thomas, Elijah Thomas, Steve Gross,
Gary Burleson and John Whitson.
There will be a visitation with the
family on Thursday prior to the service
from 12:30-2:00 P.M. at the church.

Rev. Theodore Fleenor, 99, Johnson
City, was promoted to Glory on Tuesday,
Sept. 24, 2013.
He was a son of the late Alonza and
Myrtle Watts Fleenor. He was born on
Sept. 4,1914, in Big Stone Gap, VA. He
lived most of his life in Johnson City,
TN.
He was a Free Will Baptist Minister
for more than 45 years. He was the
pastor of First Free Will Baptist Church
in Pennington Gap, VA, and East
Fairview Free Will Baptist Church in
Elizabethton, TN. Rev. Fleenor spoke at
more than 45 churches. He retired from

Anne M. Maloney, age 82 of Johnson
City, TN, entered into eternal life on
Wed. Sept.18,
2013.
She was a resident of NHC
nursing home.
Born

Carbondale, Pa.,
she was the
daughter of Peter
Boris and Johanna
Cembruch Boris.
Anne was also Anne Maloney
preceded in death
by her ex-husband, Rev. Joseph Maloney Jr., in
1994.
She was a member of St. Mary’s
Church in Johnson City and worked as a
private duty nurse most of her life. Anne
was greatly loved and will be deeply
missed by family and friends and by
those that appreciated her work with
the elderly.
Surviving are sons, Joseph (wife,
Faye), Murray (and family); two daughters, Sharon (husband, Robert), and
Robyn (and family); along with many
grandchildren and great grand children.
Also surviving are two brothers, Alex
and Micky; and a sister, Helen.
A memorial service will be held at St.
Mary’s at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, Judy
Richardson Miller, of the home; a son,
Bobby Joe Miller, of Johnson City; a
special grandson, Justin Wayne Miller,
of Elizabethton; four brothers, Carl Miller
and wife, Kathy, of Elizabethton, Jimmy
Miller, Bluff City, Guy Miller and wife,
Tina, of Kingsport, and Ronnie Miller, of
Johnson City; three sisters, Evelyn Riley,
Bristol, Martha Glover, Bluff City, and
Carolyn Kilgore and husband, Steve, of
Kingsport; a sister-in-law, Joann Brown
and husband, Mike, of Johnson City; a
brother-in-law, Howard Richardson and

■ Carl Lee Powers
DANTE, Va. — Carl Lee Powers, age
84, passed away on Saturday,
September 21, at Bristol Regional
Medical Center following a lingering illness.
He was a native of Dickenson County,
Virginia, having been born on November
15, 1928, and growing up in the Hatchet
Creek Community outside of Nora. He
lived his entire life in the family home in
which he was born.
He was a graduate of Ervinton High
School. He attended Xavier University in
Cincinnati then transferred to King
College in Bristol, where he received his
undergraduate degree. He later received
his master’s degree in education from
the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville.
He was a teacher in the Dickenson
County School System, having taught
seventh-grade students for 35 years at
Ervinton Elementary School prior to his
retirement in 1999. During that period
he also served as principal of the
school for a period of time during the
1970s. He was a member of the Middle
Branch Freewill Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of the United States
Army, serving in the Korean conflict as a
part of Headquarters Company, 21st
Infantry Regiment, 24th Division from
1949 to 1952. He was a recipient of
the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star
Medal, Korean Service Medal with five
bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal,
Korean Presidential Unit Citation and
Distinguished Unit Emblem.
It was during his service in Korea that
Carl had the unique experience of
befriending a young Korean boy, Billy
Kim, whom he later arranged to come
to the United States, where he made his
home with Carl while receiving his
American education. He attended Bob
Jones High School, University and
Seminary in South Carolina. Billy Kim
then returned to Korea as a minister
and today is a well-known religious
figure in Korea as well as serving as
minister to one of the largest Baptist
churches in Korea.
Carl loved the mountains where he
lived and delighted in exploring them.
He was also an avid writer of poetry and
music, and was a devoted student of
history, which he instilled in hundreds
of Dickenson County youth who passed
through his classroom. He also believed
strongly in religious principles which he
included in every facet of his teaching.
Survivors include one brother, Claude
W. Powers (Jean), Palm Coast, Florida;
two nieces, Sharon Peters (Henry Jr.),
Dryden, Virginia, and Shiela Thomas
(Scott), Austin, Texas; two nephews,
Charles Powers (Joyce), Piney Flats,
Tennessee, and Rick Powers, Bluff City,
Tennessee; and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. on Wednesday, September 25, in
the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel in
Bristol with Dr. Billy Kim, Dr. Joe Kim
and Dr. Bobby Griffin officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6
to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September
24.
Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in
the Amburgy Cemetery located on Bear
Ridge Road near Nora, Virginia.

friends.

Eugene Brown and Charles A. Brown.
Anna Kate was a Baptist. She retired
from Kennametal after 29+ years,
where she worked as an inspector and
in the shipping department.
She was a devoted mother and
grandmother.

Ramsey Sr., of Jonesborough; daughter,
Karen Smail and husband, Jim, of Gray;
grandson, Dana Ramsey Jr., of

BILOXI, Miss. — Isabel G. Slonaker,
age 83, a resident of Mississippi and
Washington County, Tennessee, passed
away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013,
in Gulfport, Mississippi.
There will be a brief graveside service
for friends and family held at Maple
Lawn Cemetery in Jonesborough at
2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 29,
2013.
Mrs. Slonaker was preceded in death
by her parents, Hazel and Lemuel Tyne
Greenwell; her husband, Charles E.
Slonaker Jr.; and eight siblings, Irene,
Bess, Carl, Max, Harold, Dick LT, Dennis,
David and Pauline.
Survivors include her two sons and
their wives, Charles (Jenifer) and Ron
(Jacqueline); 2 siblings, Samuel
(Geraldine) Greenwell and Ruth
Greenwell; Six grandchildren, Emma,
Elizabeth, Gabriella, Kathryn, John and
Jarret; and numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
Isabel was a graduate of Lamar High
School and she retired from Plus Mark,
Inc., Greeneville, TN, at the age of 70.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, sewing, grilling and Kentucky Fried
Chicken; and she enjoyed watching college and professional football and basketball.
The family would like to thank the

for treating mother so kindly and God
for providing us with her as a mother
and friend. We thank Jesus Christ for
saving her soul.

BRISTOL, Va. — India V. Smallwood,
age 93, of Bristol, VA, went to be with
the Lord Sunday, September 22, 2013,
at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was born January 2, 1920, a
daughter of the late Wiley and Myrtle
Jones Hodgson. Mrs. Smallwood was a
member of North Bristol Baptist Church
since November 1934, where she
taught Vacation Bible School, Children’s
Sunday School Classes and participated in ladies circles.
In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband,
George Smallwood; and ten siblings.

Norman Smallwood and wife, Rita, Jim

After retiring, Jim moved his family to
Butler, TN, to be close to his wife’s
family and made his living as a long
haul truck driver. Jim was also a
Freemason and a Shriner.

NAIROBI, Kenya — “Just seeing
dead bodies,” Kenya prepared for
the gruesome task of recovering
dozens more victims than initially
feared after its president declared
an end Tuesday to the four-day
siege of a Nairobi mall by al-Qaidalinked terrorists. Officials said the
death count could jump by another
60 or more.
“We have ashamed and defeated
our attackers,” President Uhuru
Kenyatta said in a televised address
to the nation that was delayed for
hours as gunbattles persisted at
the upscale Westgate mall.
Despite Kenyatta’s declaration,
troops remained deployed at the
vast complex, and security officials told The Associated Press
attackers with weapons or booby
traps might still be inside. A plan
to remove bodies was aborted
because of continued skirmishes
inside the mall, where three floors
had collapsed.
Describing the victims as “innocent, harmless civilians” of “various nationalities, races, ethnic,
cultural, religious and other walks
of life,” a solemn-looking Kenyatta
reported the known death toll: at
least 61 civilians, along with six
security forces and five al-Shabab
militants.
About 175 people were injured,
including 62 who remain hospitalized, he said, acknowledging that
“several”
bodies
remained
trapped in the rubble, including
those of terrorists.
However, another government
official said a far higher toll was
feared and morgue workers were
preparing to receive up to 60
more bodies. A Western embassy
official said the number of additional dead could go as high as
100.
