As an adult, I suffered several miscarriages and two of my children died as infants. I have two living children, ages 9 and 16. It should be no surprise that I turned to food for comfort; I ate myself to a whopping 420 pounds. After my marriage ended in a bitter divorce, I decided it was time for a complete makeover. I have lost more than 200 pounds. Because of my weight loss, I have gained better health, more energy, a better outlook on life — and almost 36 pounds of baggy skin. With this much excess skin, I’m sure you can imagine that I bring a whole new meaning to the word “skinny.” Insurance will not help with skin removal. Burn centers use skin from cadavers, so I can’t donate it to a good cause. I view myself as an overcomer of many things. I just need assistance in overcoming this oversized birthday suit. Can you please advise? — LEFT HANGING IN COLORADO DEAR LEFT HANGING: I addressed your question to prominent Los Angeles plastic surgeon Joel Aronowitz, who suggests you start calling around to universities that offer plastic surgery residencies. It’s possible a resident could perform your surgery under the supervision of an experienced attending physician and you would pay a lower rate for the procedure than you would be charged by a private physician. He also told me that insurance should pay for the excision of skin in areas where it overlaps with other skin because it could be medically necessary if it causes rashes or infections that are giving you problems. If this is documented by an experienced plastic surgeon, those areas of your body might be covered by your insurance. Many people finance their plastic surgeries through companies that specialize in this. The doctor’s patient coordinator can direct you to one that works with the practice. However, I would advise you to wait until you have lost ALL of the weight you intend to before getting anything done. DEAR ABBY: About 10 years ago I became involved with a man I later found out was married. It was hard for me, but I ended the relationship and ceased all contact with him because I didn’t want to be the cause of a broken family. Since then, I no longer think of myself as a good person, Abby. I can’t forget that I was the “other woman,” and I feel horrible about it. I have tried my best to “keep my nose clean.” I returned to college to complete a degree, and I avoid the dating scene. I graduated with good grades, but with all the free time I have now, I realize how lonely I am. The majority of my friends are married or in long-term relationships. I visit with them less and less because it reminds me of my aching to have a special someone. I’m tired of hating myself and feeling lonely, but I’m afraid I’ll mess up again. Do you have any advice? — MISERABLE IN KILLEEN, TEXAS DEAR MISERABLE: Yes. Please stop feeling guilty and flogging yourself for what happened. In a sense, you were as much a victim of this cheater as his wife was. Instead, thank your lucky stars that he didn’t waste more of your time. While I understand why you’d question your judgment or have some trust issues, by avoiding all contact with men, you have gone too far. If necessary, talk this through with a religious adviser or a licensed mental health professional. If you do, it will help you more quickly get on with your life. Bridge In a grand slam, count winners first by Phillip Alder Denis Waitley, a motivational speaker and author, said, “The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them ... or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.” A bridge player knows his goal, but unless he counts winners and losers, he will often not reach it, and partner would then be sharing the failure with him. In this deal, South reaches seven spades. After West leads the diamond queen, what should declarer do? Although South had only 16 high-card points, he had so many playing tricks that he was right to jump-rebid two spades, which guaranteed at least five clubs (his first-bid suit) and was game-forcing. North then used two doses of Roman Key Card Blackwood, learning first that his partner had three key cards (two aces and the spade king, or three aces), and second that he had the spade queen and club king. South starts with only nine top tricks: four spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs. He needs to establish his club suit, which will generate extra club winners and more trump tricks with ruffs in the dummy. And usually in this situation, it is right to play on the side-suit first. Declarer wins with dummy’s diamond ace, plays a club to his ace, ruffs a club low on the board, returns to his hand with a trump, ruffs another club with the spade jack, draws trumps, and claims. by Bernice Bede Osol Presentation and approach will be important this year. Not everyone you deal with will share your passions or methods. Having confidence in your abilities is commendable. Heavy-handed or forceful tactics will not win people over. If you’re diplomatic, you will gain the support you require. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) — Deal with problems at home before they intensify. You could be in for a nasty surprise if you ignore the warning signs. Facing up to your responsibilities will help keep the peace. ARIES (March 21-April 19) — Don’t allow self-doubt to deter you from achieving progress. Diversifying your interests will increase the flow of opportunities coming your way. Being prepared will open doors to new possibilities. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) — Be receptive to suggestions regarding your employment prospects. Enthusiasm and resourcefulness will heighten your appeal. A change in your career could boost your income and your confidence. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) — There are many interesting events happening around you. Get involved in as many as possible in order to broaden your horizons and make new friends. An unexpected benefit is likely. CANCER (June 21-July 22) — You will be offered interesting investment advice. Carry out the due diligence, but don’t miss out on a great opportunity through unwonted hesitation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — You will have no problem convincing others to participate in a new venture. Your enthusiasm and energy will draw plenty of partners with wonderful, original ideas in tow. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) — Someone with a grievance may be saying things behind your back. Refuse to get drawn into a trivial disagreement. Let your actions speak for themselves, and the matter will fix itself. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) — Now is a favorable time to step into the spotlight. Demonstrate your expertise in a factual, knowledgeable and inspiring manner, and some appealing offers will come your way. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) — You can reduce your expenses if you take a look at your budget. Factor in the amount you spend on transit, coffee or lunches. Point-of-sale purchases can leave you broke. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) — Don’t make assumptions. Being demanding or pushy will aggravate the people around you. If you’re thoughtful and sensitive, you will manage to get your way in the end. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) — You can make valuable connections if you accentuate your positive qualities to the right people. Take good care of your health to avoid exhaustion or a minor illness. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) — Rekindle your connections with loved ones. Make plans that are sure to win favor. Be willing to compromise and work toward a common goal. Show patience, tolerance and good will. Dr. Roach Celiac sufferers should test for hypothyroid by Keith Roach, M.D. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point that a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? — R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few or subtle symptoms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, I would not recommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms. DEAR DR. ROACH: How often do you advise bathing a 3-month-old baby? The hospital told my granddaughter that you do not have to bathe the baby every day. It’s become a concern for a worried grandparent, because she hasn’t been bathed in a week. — Anon. ANSWER Once a week is fine. Three-month-old babies don’t need frequent washings of their whole bodies, and excessive bathing can dry out the skin. A calm grandparent is a Crystal Lounge TONIGHT DJ CUPCAKE source of much comfort to new parents.
