John, the second son, stayed in Huntingdon, while William accompanied his three youngest sons to Stark Co, OH ***** South of Sodom, The History of South Norwich [Oxford Co, Ontario, Canada] Souh Norwich Historical Society, 1983. p. 17 Records of Early Settlement and the Settlers 1807-1820... According to Milton Camerson who wrote the early history of the township in 1878, "the first settlers who took up their abode in what is now South Norwich, came here in the year 1808, and located themselves as follows along Spitler Creek between the 6th and 8th concessions, Anthony Sells, Joe Spitler, John Phillips Jr., Archie Phillips. around Otterville were Robert Sweet, Joseph Stafford, Seeley Stiles and a man named Barton. p. 18 Of the names mentioned by Camerson, all but the Phillips were recorded as residing in the London District prior to 1808, either in the United Empire Loyalist or proprietor townships. p. 19 Early Families... Little is known of the other early settlers, The only reference to Joseph Spitler in Norwich Township is as a road overseer in 1814. Legend says that John Phillips moved to Lot 21 Concession 7, and planted the first apple orchard in 1810, and that John Jr. was the first school teacher. Anthony Sells had appeared on Southwold Township lists by 1819. p. 20 There were enough settlers to warrant a school by 1812. According to Camerson and Snell, there was a school established for the settlers of the seventh and eighth Concession built on the eastern bank of the Spitler Creek near the seventh concession line. John Phillips Jr. was the teacher. Presumably this site was chosen because it was at the centre of the population at the time. p. 135 Schools... The First Township School... As for curriculum, the Bible was the main textbook. John Phillips Jr. was the first teacher. In addition to their studies he taught the art of shooting. One of the duties of the older boys was to keep a supply of wood ready for the fire, which on dull winter days provided light as well as heat. p. 325 Springford ...according to stories written down by older inhabitants, the earliest known settlers in the community were Joseph Spitler, for whom the Spitler Creek was named, John Phillips and John C. Fox. their first homes were along the Spitler, on or near what is now Lot 17 in the 8th concession. About 1810 John Phillips moved to the north half of lot 21, concession 7 which had been part of a large tract of land granted from the Crown to the Honourable Robert Hamilton in 1800. On this farm John Phillips and his sons, John Jr., and Archie planted what is believed to have been the first apple orchard in south Norwich Township. One of those trees survived for 150 years until it blew down in a windstorm in 1960. Little or nothing is known about Spitler and Fox, except that the Springford Cemetery, believed to be the oldest cemetry in the township, was formerly called Fox's Burying ground after Mr. Fox. Spitler moved on to Southwold township by 1820. ***** 1820 Federal Census, Huntingdon Co, PA Warriors Mark Twp John Spitler Series: M33 Roll: 104 Page: 92 201110 12010 1820 Federal Census, Stark Co, OH Series: M33 Roll: 94 Page: 205 Simon Spitler ... 211201 10101 William Spitler Jr. William Spitler Sr William Trusl Sam’l Spitler Jacob Paul David Paul 210010 000001 210010 300010 100010 410010 10010 00000 30010 10010 10010 01100 not enumerated as ‘foreigner, not naturalized’ brother-in-law of John & Simon brother-in-law of John & Simon ***** The Ohio Repository, Thursday, 9 November 1820 Page 2, column 1 DISTRESSING ACCIDENT On the 6th inst. On the original wall of the United Church, underneath the siding, it still says "Springbrook Church". In 1799, William Hambly began surveying Norwich Township, which at that time was still part of Norfolk County. In 1800 it became part of Oxford County, at which time William Wilcox was awarded a Crown Grant of 1500 acres in the township. The only roads were pathways and trails through the bush. One of these was known as Wolf Track, which extended from Bald Hill to the Coal Road in Otterville. The first settlers were Josiah Gilbert, on Lot 21, in 1807; Joseph Spittler, 1/2 mile north; and a Mr. Earl. Josiah brought the first horse into the Township in 1808. Mrs. Gilbert would ride the horse to take a bag of wheat to Longpoint, have it ground into flour and return - carrying her baby. It was on Joseph Spittler's land that the Pioneer school was built in about 1812. ***** Return of the Present State of Lands Located at Port Talbot Under the Superintendence of Thomas Talbot, Esquire in the London and Western Districts of Canada [1817] Southwold Talbot Road East north side acres William Pettit Joseph Steinhoff 200 200 lot 20 21 south side Joseph Spitler David Conrad James McQueen 200 200 200 22 23 24 ***** Upper Canada Land Book K, p. 359 9 Feb 1820 Joseph Spitler, stating that he has been located on 200 acres of land by Col Talbot on Talbot Road and praying for a grant thereon. SPITLER, a descendant of one of the oldest pioneer families of Montgomery county, and a regular minister of the old German Baptist church, was born in Clay township, Montgomery county, Ohio, June 22, 1848. For a fuller account of the Spitler family than here presented the reader is referred to the biography of Dr. E. W. Spitler, printed elsewhere in this volume. Samuel Spitler, the grandfather of Noah E., was born in Lancaster county, Pa., and married Catherine Mishler, by whom he had the following children: Joseph, John, Jacob, Samuel, Henry, Daniel, David and Mary. Samuel Spitler moved to Ohio about 1815, settling in Stark county, and living there about ten years. In 1825 he came to Montgomery county, settling on 765 acres of land, most of which he cleared up from the woods. In 1853 he removed to Miami county, Ohio, passing the remainder of his life with his son-in-law, Joseph Gnodle. For many years he was a deacon in the German Baptist church, a man of influence in his neighborhood, and reached the age of seventy-two years, having been well-known for many miles around as a sturdy, hardworking, thrifty pioneer farmer. Jacob M. Spitler, his son, and father of Noah E., was born in Stark county, Ohio, January 8, 1820. He received a common-school education, became a farmer, and in due course of time married Ellen Earhart, who was born in 1831. She was a daughter of Jacob Earhart. Mr. and Mrs. Spitler settled on land in Clay township, purchasing eighty acres, which he greatly improved and made into a good farm and home. When he settled on it this tract was partly cleared, and by the untiring labor of his own hands he cleared away the surplus timber, added fertilizing material to the soil wherever necessary, and brought his farm to a profitable state of cultivation. He and his wife reared the following children: Levi, Harriet, Noah, and Mary Allen, Mrs. Spitler died in 1856, Mr. Spitler remaining on the home farm four years a widower. In 1861, he married Mrs. Mary Sharp, a widow, whose maiden name was Stutsman. Mr. Spitler then bought land in Miami county, Ohio, where he lived until 1869, when he removed to Douglas county, Kans., there settling on 120 acres of land, upon which he is still living. His well-earned reputation for integrity and honorable dealing has followed him from Ohio to the west, where he is prosperous and successful. Noah E. Spitler received an excellent education in the district school, and afterward attended the high school at Piqua. For some years he was successfully engaged in teaching school in Montgomery county, and also in Miami county. On August 9, 1870, he married Miss Anna Binkley, in Montgomery county, she having been born in Lancaster county, Pa., June 25, 1847. She is a daughter of Jacob M. and Mattie K. (Weller) Binkley. For a fuller mention of Mrs. Spitler, the reader is referred to the history of the Binkley family, elsewhere published in this volume. Mr. Spitler removed, in 1877, to Miami county, remaining there until 1893, where, with the exception of a few years, he was engaged in teaching school. He has been one of the most successful of teachers, having taught thirteen years in three districts, twenty-seven months constantly in one district. In 1876 he taught a graded school in district No. 12, Miami county. His ability as a teacher is fully recognized and his labors in this capacity have always been highly appreciated by the people of Montgomery and Miami counties. Many people of prominence, both men and women, have been pupils of Mr. Spitler, and have their names on his roll of honor. In 1893 Mr. Spitler removed to his present farm of thirty-eight acres. He and his wife are the parents of the following children: Harriet E. and Jacob F. Mr. Spitler became a member of the German Baptist church in 1875, and in 1882 began preaching the gospel to his people, and has since continued to preach. He has always led a life of great usefulness, his object being to live for the benefit of others. In the fields of education and religion his work has been that of one who loved his fellow-men.
