On April 13, the Outreach Task Force completed its work with a presentation to the
Administrative Board that was approved unanimously. Out of the dream process
engaged in by the entire congregation last year, the task force developed the dream to
“Encourage and implement interfaith activities for all ages with other denominations and
faiths (i.e., Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, etc.). Listed below is the proposal.
The Proposal
From a procedural perspective, we recommend that the Outreach Task Force continue
under a new name as the Interfaith Task Force to accomplish and implement the
following recommendations by December 2013:

2. Spark Community Awareness and Involvement
UMCL Awareness through Education—Course on Major Religious Traditions
1. Create four blocks of course education dealing with the major religious
traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism. Each block would consist
of two to three sessions and contain information concerning:
a. History
b. Cultural Significance
c. Spiritual Foundations
d. Similarity/contrast with other traditions with emphasis on protestant
Christianity
e. Present Influence
2. Course could be offered on a Wednesday and Sunday evening based on
interest.
3. During each block we will sponsor a dinner session to reflect cultural traditions
and to engage a guest speaker.

4. Timeframe – First block will be offered in June and based on interest continued
throughout the summer or moved to September or October.
5. Woody Bedell will present or host the block series at UMCL.
6. Resources – primary need would be space and use of kitchen. Do not
anticipate the need for any financial resources.
7. Additional educational initiatives would be the responsibility of the group or a
similar group identified by the Spiritual Growth Task Force to create and
implement courses for UMCL.

Community Awareness and Involvement—Interfaith Community Committee
1. The Task Force will identify religious leaders from different faiths to form
an interfaith community committee to generate awareness and
understanding throughout Lake County of the importance of the different
faiths in this age of globalization. We anticipate that we will contact
Advocate Condell to discuss potential opportunity for joint involvement
2. UMCL would be represented on the committee but not in charge
3. The Interfaith Community Committee sparked by UMCL Interfaith Task
Force will develop the programs that will be presented to the community.
4. Resources may include the need for space at UMCL.
5. The Task Force’s mission will be completed after the initiation of the first
Interfaith Community meeting. We anticipate this to be no later than the
end of December of 2013.
We celebrate the congregation’s desire to be a force for good in the larger
community. Our congregation can be a leader in a positive interfaith dialogue with
other great faith traditions. Jesus’ commandment that we “love one another”
most certainly would encourage this process.

Giving Abundantly, Generosity Overflowing
We invite YOU to join the cause!
At this year’s Annual Conference from June 5-8, the Bishop has
asked each church to bring a special offering to benefit
Harvest 2020, an effort to start new churches and ministries
in the Northern Illinois Conference. Our church will be
receiving a special offering on Pentecost Sunday, May 19,
for this purpose. We invite you to prayerfully consider
what you might give and bring your offering on that day.

Welcome Valerie Baker — We are delighted to announce the addition of Valerie Baker to the staff as our
Communications Secretary. Valerie brings a wealth of experience as an administrative assistant, secretary,
graphic arts worker and web site designer. As we move into the 21st century as a church, we are delighted to
have an experienced worker with her wonderful skill-set to help us advance the ministry and mission of the
United Methodist Church of Libertyville. Valerie shares: I was born & raised in small town in Pennsylvania and
moved to Illinois in 1987. I have two children, Kenny & Nicholas. Kenny is living at home working on his
second degree. I have been married to my husband, Byron, for 7 wonderful years. I enjoy making candles and
soaps in my "spare" time. I look forward to the weekend for family time and my new journey here at UMCL.
Welcome aboard, Valerie. God’s blessings on all your ministry here!
Thank You Lindsey! With the completion of our search for a Communications Secretary, we offer a warm and
heartfelt thank you to Lindsey Junk. Lindsey is first and foremost our Assistant Youth Pastor whom the kids
here adore. She has also been filling in quite capably as the assistant secretary since last November. She has
kept us all in good humor and her love for our church is evident to all. She will begin an internship soon while
continuing her work as Youth Pastor and then in August it is off to medical school in Indiana.
Thanks, Lindsey, for helping out in so many wondrous ways!

Spring Handbell Concert — Beth McFarland and the Heritage Bell Choir would like to invite you and your
friends to come and hear the Random Ringers Handbell Ensemble on Sunday, May 5th at 4:00 PM for their
Spring concert here at UMCL.
Special Coffee Hour — Come to say “Good-Bye” to Ruth Brockman during a special coffee hour on Sunday,
May 19th, 9:30-10:30 AM, in Fellowship Hall, hosted by Ruth’s Bridge Club. Ruth has been a member of the
UMCL since April, 1967, and will be moving to Huntsville, Alabama later this month to be near her son.
Please plan to attend this special farewell event to share your good wishes with Ruth!

Prime Time will meet on Monday, May 13th at Noon
for lunch at the Townee Square Restaurant
in downtown Libertyville.
The cost for lunch will still be $5 and we will order
from the regular menu. You can park at the church
and walk to Townee Square if it's a nice day.
Or you could get a group together and carpool from
the church parking lot to the restaurant.

Please save “proof of purchases” (UPC codes) from Campbell’s products as well as
from Pepperidge Farms, Swanson and Franco American brands. Lids are required from
Campbell’s Ready to Serve soups, Prego Sauces and V8 bottled varieties. Marcy
Newberry has benefited greatly from the efforts of
everyone who faithfully contributes to this project.

HUGE THANKS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS FOR PADS!!
It is almost impossible to thank everyone who supports our PADS ministry. Besides
many people from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Libertyville Covenant Church, Islamic
Foundation North, and the Mennonite Church, there are so many people from our
church. This list is not complete but the following people have gone above and beyond

PADS SEASON HAS ENDED—
NOW WHAT CAN YOU DO?
April 27th was the last night for
providing shelter to the homeless in
Fellowship Hall for this season.
From May 1 until Sept 30,
the homeless are truly homeless.
You may know that Condell washes
sheets and pillow cases for PADS each
week, but we need to wash the blankets!
Volunteers are needed to take 2-3
blankets home and wash them,
returning them to church in late summer.
Blankets will be out in Fellowship Hall
for anyone to take home to wash.

PADS SUMMER LUNCHES
Our season for providing shelter
for the homeless is over,
but we can still provide lunches
during the summer.
We are signed up to provide
40 lunches on the second Tuesday
of each month (May—September).
These can be provided by a group,
a couple of families, a class, etc.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT IN HELPING HANDS WAREHOUSE
The Helping Hands Warehouse contains several wheel chairs, a hospital bed, a bath
seat, and several walkers. We would be happy to lend them or give them to anyone

1) Mother/Child Survival, an UMCOR project working to reduce infant and maternal
mortality. Helping improve prenatal care is part of the vital work of our global
humanitarian relief agency.
2) Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (GETS) began in 1853 as a result of a
bequest from Eliza Garrett to establish a biblical institute for Methodist preachers.
Over 400 students are enrolled each year and several of our own Christian leaders
have attended. As they celebrate 160 years of theological education, they look to
the future where all will know the love of Christ.
