Bull Run Middle School hosted its annual blood drive in association with the American Red Cross on Wednesday, February 4th. A heartfelt thank you to our donors who took the chance to make a big difference in the lives of people right here in Northern Virginia. This year we surpassed our goal and set a new record with 24 units donated! All SIGNET students were given the option to participate in the annual Stock Market Game. It begins the first week of February and runs through the first week of May. This year Bull Run SIGNET 8th graders have been invited to participate in the Capitol Hill Challenge for the first time. This concurrent competition is limited to a few schools in each Congressional District. Good luck teams! February is Black history month! Every February, America and Virginia observe Black History Month, celebrating and honoring the many achievements and contributions made by African Americans to the economic, cultural, and political development of America. Our school featured the band Souled Out on Friday, Feb. 13th. They presented a fantastic Black History overview to music for each grade level. The concert/lecture combines one of the Mid Atlantic’s most popular bands, playing popular music from each generation from the 1950s to today against the historical and cultural backdrop of America from the 1950s to the present. Colorful and powerful visuals are intertwined with historical facts, accompanied by performance of the music. In addition, throughout the month, our staff portrayed several historical perspectives in honor of Black History Month during our morning announcements. Our teachers presented lessons in the classroom that provided additional information for students that highlighted the historical events in a way that is relevant for today and the future. This year’s Robotics Club has 20 members from 6th-8th grade. They have been working together since early October to compete in the VEX Skyrise tournaments with new club sponsor, Danielle Robinson. Some of the students have had exposure to robotics in elementary school or summer camps, but for most, this year is the first time they have been involved with VEX . The club meets twice a week (Tu/Thur) and have had several fun build days on Saturdays. Each of the four teams has a unique design of their own engineering. It’s impressive to see how they approach the game and overcome problems along the way and how far they have progressed. Two of our teams did well in a competition on December 7th though snow delays have forced the rescheduling of some of the competitions. The Bull Run Middle School Robotic Eagles team 1489D participated in the Virginia Commonwealth competition on February 27 in Richmond. The team qualified for State competition by being selected for the Design Award during regional competition. Team members are Prisha Nandakumar, Weesam Semaan, Lindsay Brandt and Ishan Lamba. Book Talk & Live Video Chat! Bull Run will be hosting a special event—An after-school book discussion and video conference with popular author Wendy Mass! This super cool event will take place on Tuesday, March 24th just after school in the library. Participants should plan to take the activity bus home or be picked up by a parent by 4:30. We’ll be discussing: Wendy Mass’s book A Mango-Shaped Space. Copies are available at the library and through Ms. Lazer. Stop by to sign up in the Library soon, as space is limited to 20 participants! VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Page 8 Eagle News Cont. Recently, Bull Run Middle School took part in a re-designation process to continue our recognition as a National School to Watch. This redesignation process included an updated application, analysis of our school programs, and a site visit from members of the Schools to Watch Forum. Please join the school in celebrating the success of being reawarded this honor of our school community, along with being recognized with the top 30 schools in the state of Virginia and about 400 across the country. This is a great achievement. Bull Run Middle School will be recognized at the National Schools to Watch Conference in Arlington, Virginia later this school year. The National Forum to accelerate middle schools launched the Schools to Watch initiative in 1999 to recognize high performing middle schools. Schools are recognized for excelling in academic excellence, showing developmental responsiveness to middle school students, demonstrating social equity and providing strong organizational supports. Bull Run Middle School has shown evidence of meeting the criteria in all of the areas. In their final report, Bull Run Middle School was recognized for “doing an outstanding job providing students with a high-quality education. The school climate is welcoming to students, parents, teachers, and visitors. It is obvious that student learning and safety are priorities. Whether it is the smallest or biggest of change, decisions are made to benefit the children. The SOAR Program is a model for all middle schools to follow.” ?? LOST AND FOUND ?? Did you know that BRMS has multiple “lost and found” locations? Lost articles of clothing may be located on the stage in the cafeteria Lost books, glasses and jewelry, may be discovered in the front office There are also “Lost & Founds” in the gym and in each classroom. There are SEVERAL pencil pouches & books in the office! VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Page 9 Eagle News Cont. Bull Run Middle School will be making changes to our school’s Master Bell Schedule for the 2015-2016 school year. Since September, Mr. Phythian has been working with our teachers and the parents on the school’s Principal’s Advisory Council to better align our current schedule with a schedule that provides equal instructional time for all of the core academic subjects, while meeting the minimum requirement of 140 instructional hours as required by the Virginia Standards of Quality. The schedule that we currently have in place is a daily Four Block Schedule with a double dose (time) of Language Arts and Math. Next year, we will be implementing a daily schedule that reflects Four Equal Core Periods every day. The Four Equal Core Period Schedule will consist for four 62 minutes daily blocks of instruction for all four content areas of instruction (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) for students in grades 6 and 7. Students in the 8th grade with have Five Equal Core Periods of instruction that equal 55 minutes daily. The additional instructional period includes a daily period of Spanish/French for students enrolled in Extended Language Arts. Students who are enrolled in a Traditional Language Arts class will be enrolled in an additional Reading class or an Introduction to World Languages class (NonHigh School Credit Class). Our related arts and physical education classes for all grades will remain the same length of time for all classes. The Four Equal Core Period schedule will provide your child with a consistent daily schedule that allows for greater flexibility for your child’s teachers to provide a balanced and interdisciplinary approach to their teaching and for student learning. Currently, one of our 6th grade teams, Team Endeavor, has been following this daily schedule for the current school year, and it has been a huge success. Please visit the Bull Run Middle School website under the Advisory Council tab to view a “Draft” of the 2015-2016 Bell Schedule. Congratulations to Sarah Jagels for winning the "If I Were Mayor" Essay Contest for the Town of Haymarket. The contest was open to all Virginia Students enrolled in the 7th grade during the school year. The Bull Run Middle School 7th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teachers worked together to promote and support students in this important crosscurricular activity. Sarah was recently recognized by Haymarket Mayor, David M. Leake, and Social Studies teacher, Mr. Craig Hooper, for her outstanding accomplishment. VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Page 10 Eagle News Cont. Microsoft Office 365 Microsoft Office 365 is a cloud-based communication and collaboration tool, hosted by Microsoft and managed by Prince William County Schools (PWCS). Office 365 enables PWCS students (grades 3-12) to email, store files, and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real time from school or at home, all within a secure online environment. One of the components of the Office 365 account is an email account for each student. These email accounts are able to send email within and outside of PWCS. There is no “Parent View” of the email or the Office 365 account. Parents are encouraged to explore Office 365 with their child by logging in together. Parents can have their child log in to his/her PWCS Office 365 account at home and show you his/her email inbox and sent items. All 7th and 8th grade students have activated their Microsoft Office 365 accounts, and 6th graders will be activating their accounts in the next month. Once activated, students will have access to email as well as online versions of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and OneNote, all of which can be utilized at school or at home. In addition, the Office 365 account permits downloading and use of the entire Office 365 suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher, Lync, Outlook, and Access) on up to five compatible PCs or Macs at no charge. It includes free automatic updates, and is good for as long as the student is enrolled in Prince William County Public Schools. For instructions on how to download Office 2013, please see below: Installing Office 2013 Go to the Bull Run Middle School website (http://bullrun-ms.schoolfusion.us/) to access the Office 365 Login. Log in to Office 365. Click on the gear and choose Office 365 settings. Choose Software on the left side of the screen. Scroll down and click Install. VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Page 11 Eagle News Cont. During the installation process, you will be asked to enter your username (which is your email address) and your password. Keep in mind the installation of Office 2013 is connected to you. By installing the software, it allows you to work seamlessly with Office 365 and OneDrive. You can save files directly from any Office 2013 application to OneDrive. You can manage your software installations and what computers are allowed to use the software. If you ever want to deactivate Office 2013 from a computer, click on Deactivate. This comes in useful when you get a new computer. When deactivating, the software will still remain on the computer but will not be useable. For more information about the student Office 365 account, please visit http://tinyurl.com/pyr5ygf or email our ITC, Netia Elam, at ElamJL@pwcs.edu. VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Page 12 Library News The Library is going full tilt with many activities, lessons and programs. Despite having missed many days due to snow & experiencing short days with delays, the library has been a center of energy! Battle of the Books – Club members have been hard at work preparing for the Open Competition that was held Feb. 28th. The club members had a great time while developing their skills as a team and placed 19th & 32nd out of the multi-county middle school competition. Way to represent BRMS! Beall’s Best YA Lit – Students have continued to enjoy meeting during lunch to discuss books specifically picked out by Mrs. Beall. Students share lunch while playing games centered on answering questions about the books they read. War of the Genres – The Genre Wars has continued with SCIENCE FICTION emerging as our latest victor! 24 lucky winners selected their prizes for January. Which genre will be most popular for February? Library Lunch bunch – In January, we were excited to provide winter treats & our “Winter Whiteout themed games during all the lunch periods. Students can sign up the week before. Groovy Genre Groupies – Students will met in February to discuss their favorite ROMANCE books. Students enjoyed a Valentine treat & had their photo taken for our bulletin board. Sign up in the library and come to the next session! March’s group will focus on the SPORTS genre. Virginia Readers Choice – Students continue to read the VRC books available on display in the front of the library. Be sure to read at least 4 by March so you can participate in the pizza party and voting for your favorite book! VIRGINIA READERS' CHOICE (VRC) What is the VRC? This state program was developed to encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal, to broaden students’ awareness of literature as a life-long pleasure, to encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure, and to honor favorite books and their authors. Each year a list of books is chosen by a state committee and students vote on their favorite—BRMS VRC members voted for The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen as their top book at their last meeting for the 2013-14 school year. Overdue Fines Please ensure your student returns all library books by their due date or within the two week period of check out. Fines of .10 per day will be assessed for books overdue. Lost book fees and late fines may be paid with exact change or check only. Overdue notices are given weekly in advisory classrooms. Thank you! VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Counseling News Page 13 The staff and students of Bull Run Middle School were pleased to recognize our professional school counselors during the first week of February, in celebration of National School Counseling Week. The week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Our school counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing academic concerns, personal/social skills, and career awareness for success at the middle school level. Interim report cards will be going home with students on March 12th. Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled through your child’s advisory teacher, if you desire one. The counselors from Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson High Schools were at Bull Run to assist in scheduling our eighth graders for their high school courses. Our counselors worked with the high schools so that your child was appropriately scheduled. A panel of ninth grade students visited to talk with our eighth graders about high school. They answered questions from the students and discussed high school activities, programs, clubs and athletics. In addition to contributing to the high school course selection process, our Counselors have worked with all grade levels on Suicide Prevention, Sexual Harassment. Parents whose students are currently at Bull Run due to a transfer request must make that request in writing every year. Please make your written request to Mr. Phythian by April 1st so that he has a chance to review it before sending the request to the central office. Please state your reasons for the request on the form that is available in the Counseling Office. Page 16 VOLUME 13 ISSUE 5 Food Services News Focus on “Whole” Grains School meals include a variety of healthy foods. Grains are a part of every school meal. Health experts advise everyone that grains are a healthy necessity in our diet and that it is important to eat at least half our grains as “whole grains.” Approximately 95% of all grains served at breakfast and lunch in PWCS are whole grains. A grain kernel or seed contains three edible parts, the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Whole grains include all three parts of the kernel. Refining normally removes the bran and germ, leaving only the endosperm. Without the bran and germ, about 25% of a grain’s protein is lost, along with at least seventeen key nutrients. While processors add back some vitamins and minerals to enrich refined grains, whole grains are healthier providing more protein, fiber and other nutrients. Consumption of whole grains has been shown to lower the risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes. This is an eating habit we should all work to develop. 25 SECOND MARKING PERIOD 6TH GRADE PRINCIPAL’S HONOR ROLL 2014-2015 Page 17 Katsaris Hunter Abdulla Kanz Kaur Jasmin Agresti Luke Keane III John Austin-Wakefield Nicholas Kelly Emma Avalos Angela Kemp Madeline Ayala Mark Kim Christopher Baird Jackson Klus Tyler Bauer Evan Kocher Kelsey Bensen Joseph Lazar Jeffrey Bergman Mitchell Linder Nicole Bickel Zachary MacGowan Benjamin Black Talula Marche Claire Bounkong Kasey McConnell Samantha Brady Shane Mishra Prateek Brown Margaret Molina Alejandro Bruce Amiri Morrell Caroline Cahall Isabella Moss Brianna Calderon Sofia Mueller Natalie Caldwell Mason Mulhern McKayla Candland Natalie Natysin Logan Carbajal-Roque Anthony Olds Tristen Carroll Carsen Omari-Anim Jenelle Cheeks Cameron Ortiz Vega Ydette Chicas Christean Ott Abigail Clemente Isabella Pado Blagen Clinton Hayden Patane Emma Custer Rebecca Petty-Kane Caroline Dang Crystal Phillips Grace Dimashi Joanne Powers McKenna Drescher Theodore Raflo Josephine Dunning Aniya Rahman Zarin Evanisko Sophia Rao Avik Forzano Gina Rea Cory Gallagher Matthew Robson Ethan Garcia-Flores Jenifer Ryu Gaeun Geneva Alexander Sarai Rajvir Green Courtney Schrant William Guo Aileen Shafer Henry Helton William Shastri Aditi Henriques Nicholas Sinnott Ashley Himes Makiya Skinner Olivia Hocking Carl Speier James Jaghori Zaynab Steinour Fiona Jimenez Nicole Suegay Jacquelyn Kamman Lilly Svenson Grant SECOND MARKING PERIOD Cont. 2014-2015 Taylor Sean Tchamadjeu Ashley Thielen Kira Todorov Julia Tracy Allyson Truong Hailey Wall Naomi Walsh John Wangsameteegoon Kyle Wright Megan Yancy Meghan Yates Ella Young Abigail Zlatev Victor Megan Eden Julia Alysia Margaret Leane Charles Camille Jacob Sydney Elizabeth Anna Gracie-Mae Sean Ryan Olivia Julia Morgan Hope Madison Amber Reiley Nathan Corbin Nina Thomas Anisha Victoria Tylor Emilie Aloysius Caleb Marrion Emily Hadley Fawad Harjot Dev Carter Danesha Jackson Jenny Adriana Jessica Patrick 7TH GRADE PRINCIPAL’S HONOR ROLL Andriatiana Arciere Benavides Bianchi Bounds Bourne Brazawski Buchinsky Byers Byun Chisholm Chisholm Cross Cuento Davis Denniston Dentone Dolph Durham Dziekan Engelhardt Ewing Forero Gabriel Garcia Gardner Garrett Gayoso Gilmore Greene Guirguis Harley Hartman Hernandez Herr Hewitt Hill Howdershell Hritsik Hughes Jackowski Jagels Jaghori Jefferson Daniella Julia Peter Katallyn Trevor Caroline Hunter Rebecca Trinity Matthew Grant Madison Logan Sarah Cora Olivia Julieta Michaela Amyia Bennett Chloe Elise Juliana Thiyara Karen Jackson Kailey Rocia Elizabeth Madison Christian Brooke Cristina Victoria Katelyn Alexander Justin Sydney Kayleigh Braedon Hannah Sarah Sarah Simone Joshi Kaplan Kash Kelly Kiernan Kom Kurz Lea Leary Leonard Manning Matias Maxwell McCarthy Menard Migli Mitchell Murphy Nelson Ozoemelam Parsons Parsons Patton Phillips Poku-Kwateng Pottenburgh II Poudel Powell Rauh Richard Ring Robitaille Rutkowsky Schmall Scott Sediqi Shergill Suri Svenson Thammavongsa Tirrell Tran Villca Yoon Zugel 8TH GRADE PRINCIPAL’S HONOR ROLL Abell Adams Alexander Azami Bannan Battell Borden Bourdeau Garcia Brandt Brinson Jr Brooks III Bryson Canestra Carpenter Chavali Chong Colavita Comer Cripe Cruz Maggie Francis Daniel Khatira Caitlyn Alexander Sebastian Sol Lindsay Sterling David Hunter Kyle Edwin Sruthi Nathaniel Nicholas Alexis Cailynn Jocelyn Page 18 SECOND MARKING PERIOD Cont.
