VANCOUVER POLICE DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS Vancouver Police Department scholarships are offered annually by the following individuals, firms and organizations to encourage and assist sons and daughters of members of the Vancouver Police Department to attend Post-Secondary Educational Institutions. Please indicate which scholarship(s) you are applying for by marking the box to the left. POLICE MUTUAL BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (10 x $750) Total of $7,500.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members who are, or have been, members of the Police Mutual Benevolent Association. SERGEANT LARRY YOUNG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (10 x $750) Total of $7,500.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members of the Vancouver Police Department. The individual awarded the Sergeant Larry Young Memorial Scholarship will be chosen on the basis of their excellence in academics and athletics. SUPERINTENDENT DOUGLAS W. McRAE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (2 x $500) Total of $1,000.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members of the Vancouver Police Department. The individual awarded this scholarship will be chosen on the basis of their excellence in academics and dedication to community service. VANCOUVER POLICE CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP (2 x $1,000) Total of $2,000.00 (a) Don MacKay Memorial Scholarship & (b) David Lee Durkin Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is open in competition to the children or grandchildren of serving, superannuated or deceased members of the Vancouver Police Credit Union. VANCOUVER POLICE FOUNDATION / ALTON STUART HANN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (1 x $750) Total of $750.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members of the Vancouver Police Department. The individual awarded this scholarship will be chosen on the basis of their excellence in academics and dedication to community service. VANCOUVER POLICE REVOLVER CLUB (VPRC) SCHOLARSHIP (6 x $1,200) Total of $7,200.00 This scholarship is open to children whose parent is a VPRC member, including superannuated members who were VPRC members at the time of their retirement from the VPD. Preference may be given to an ‘active’ VPRC member, which is defined as a member in good standing and participates in and/or assists with VPRC initiatives. Selections for scholarships will be determined by the VPRC Executive. The individuals awarded these scholarships will be chosen on the basis of excellence in academics, athletics and community service. VANCOUVER POLICE SERGEANTS’ ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (2 x $1,500) Total of $3,000.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members who are, or have been, members of the Vancouver Police Sergeants Association (provided the member did not advance beyond the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to superannuation). VANCOUVER POLICE UNION SCHOLARSHIP (9 x $1,000) Total of $9,000.00 This scholarship is open in competition to the children of serving, superannuated or deceased members who are, or have been, members of the Vancouver Police Union. VANCOUVER SUPERANNUATED POLICE OFFICERS’ ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP (4 x $800) Total of $3,200.00 This scholarship is open in competition to children or grandchildren of members or deceased members of the Vancouver Superannuated Police Officers’ Association. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION ► ► ► ► ► ► Graduation from Secondary School; Enrolment in a Post-Secondary Educational Institute; Preference may be given to candidates who have not previously won a Vancouver Police Department scholarship; Academic standing of the applicants, financial circumstances and services to the community will be considered in selecting the winners; Award winners will be required to provide proof of registration with one of the Post-Secondary Educational Institutes; A complete application including all the requested information is mandatory for consideration. Applicant's full name, address, postal code, e-mail address, telephone number, place and date of birth; A list of Secondary Schools attended by the applicant, along with dates of attendance; Parent's name (or grandparent’s name, if applicable), and details of years of service with the VPD; Transcript of grades from Senior Secondary School(s) and Post Secondary Educational Institute(s) attended by applicant (applications without grades will not be considered); Other details which may assist the Committee in its selection; A letter prepared by the applicant stating: a) a brief outline of interests, hobbies and activities within the applicant’s school and/or community; b) information concerning prizes, scholarships, or awards won by the applicant in any field; c) a short statement of the purpose(s) in seeking to attend a Post Secondary Educational Institution and of the applicant’s proposed program of studies; d) details of the applicant’s employment over the past two years; e) an adequate account of the applicant’s financial circumstances and those of his/her family.
