If needed, number of stitches will be specified at the ends of rounds as follows: (number of sts total: number on first needle and number on second needle). I recommend that you highlight or circle the number that corresponds with your size to avoid confusion. Instructions: CO 14(16, 18) using the long-tail cast-on. Divide sts as follows for working in the round on Magic Loop: [7(8,9) stitches on the first needle and 7(8,9) on the second]. Work in twisted rib for 8(8,10) rnds as follows: Round 1: *(K1tbl, p1), rep from * around (be careful! For sizes S and L, the second half of the round starts with a purl stitch). Rounds 2-8: repeat rnd 1. Next round: K even Next round: K3, M1L, (k4, M1L) three times, k last st [18(20,22) sts: 9(10,11) and 9(10,11)]. Thumb gusset: Round 1: K1, M1L, insert marker, k to end. Place second marker on needle, M1L. Note: if you are knitting two-at-a-time, you won't get to the "end" of the round of the first mitten until you finish the second mitten [22(24,26) sts: 11(12,13) and 11(12,13)]. Round 2: K even. Round 3: K to marker, M1L, SM, k to next marker, SM, M1L, k to end [24(26,28) sts: 12(13,14) and 12(13,14)]. Repeat rounds 2-3 until 30(32,34) sts remain on needles (there will be 13 sts between the markers - 7 on the 1st needle and 6 on the 2nd). Remove sts for thumb (watch a KNITFreedom video on how to do the thumb): K5, slip these 5 sts onto waste yarn. K to last 4 sts, removing markers as you come to them. Slip rem 4 sts onto right-hand needle without knitting them - then pass them directly onto other end of waste yarn. 9 sts on waste yarn for thumb. © Untangling the Ball, LLC 2012. All rights reserved. Tie ends of waste yarn together (do not pull the thumb sts so tight that you can't get your thumb through to try on the mitten later). Hand: K even for 11(13,15) rnds (you can place a marker in a st on the 1st row to help you count your rows) or until work covers the tip of your pinkie finger. Begin decreasing for the hand as follows: First decrease round: (first needle:) K to last 3 sts on first needle, k2tog, k1, (second needle:) k1, SSK, k to last 3 sts on needle, k2tog, k to end [18(20,22) sts remain: 9(10,11) and 9(10,11). K 4 rounds even. Next decrease round: (K1, SSK, k to last 3 sts on needle, K2tog, k1), rep on second needle [14(16,18) sts remain: 7(8,9) and 7(8,9)]. K 1 round even. SIZE S ONLY: (K1, SSK, k1, k2tog, k1), rep on second needle (8 sts remain: 4 and 4). SIZE M ONLY: (K1, SSK TWICE, K2tog, K1), rep on second needle (10 sts remain: 5 and 5). SIZE L ONLY: (K1, S2KP, k1, k3tog, k1), rep on second needle (10 sts remain: 5 and 5). K 1 round even. Last decrease round: (K1, SkKP, k0(1,1), rep on second needle [4(6,6) sts remain: 2(3,3) and 2(3,3)]. Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Thread yarn onto tapestry needle and thread TWICE through remaining stitches, removing the needles at the end. Pull yarn tight. Thumb (watch a KNITFreedom video on how to do the thumb): Place 9 thumb sts onto circular needle and divide evenly for knitting in the round on magic loop (5 and 4). Joining yarn, pick up and knit 4 sts along inside of thumb. Next round: K7, SSK, K2tog twice (9 sts tem on needles: redistribute as needed: 5 and 4). PM for BOR. K 6(7,8) rounds even. Next round: K3, SSK, K2tog, k to end (7 sts rem). Cut yarn, leaving a 12-inch tail. Thread yarn onto tapestry needle and thread TWICE through remaining stitches, removing the needles at the end.
