A Guide To
Moroccan Tadelakt
Moroccan Tadelakt is considered to be one of oldest and most
treasured plaster finishes in the world. Originally, Tadelakt was used
by the Berbers to waterproof cisterns for the hygienic storage of
drinking water.
Coloured with natural earth pigments, it soon became a highly prized
surface finish that was extensively used in the Riads in Morocco.

Traditional Tadelakt
The history of this highly specialized plaster
dates back thousands of years. It has its
origins in and around the ancient city of
Marrakech in Morocco.
The beautiful finish follows the old
Moroccan Tadelakt tradition. Tadelakt,
freely translated means “to rub in” or more
appropriately , “to caress”.
Tadelakt is polished with river stones with
the aid of pure olive soap.

The allure of Tadelakt is not easily
described in words or pictures. It is only
through touching it that you can fully
appreciate the unique finish. The Tadelakt
surface will be as hard as stone but silky
soft to the touch.
Tadelakt can also be used on floors,
but remains somewhat fragile. It is only
recommended that it is used in areas
where walking is done in bare feet or soft
shoes. Small stones trapped in the soles of
hard shoes will scratch the surface.
The most popular area for using Tadelakt is
on shower floors.
Over time, Tadelakt develops a patina that
creates a subtle ever-changing lumination.
Tadelakt develops very fine hairline cracks
that add to the ancient appearance of the
finish.
As featured in the “YOU” magazine, the Sunday
supplement from The Mail On Sunday.

We Can Also Mix Custom Colours
At a little piece of morocco we don’t limit ourselves to a set colour range as almost all
colours can be matched. Jet black is not possible due to the restraints of the amount of
pigment that can be added to the Tadelakt. This is just a small collection of the colours
that we have produced for our customers. All of the colours have been produced using
natural earth pigments.
Please note that colours printed may vary from that in real life. These colours are just
for guide purpose only.
