ELECTION TO BE HELD AT THE
DECEMBER MEETING
Nominations for S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie officers and directors were
taken at our General Membership meeting on November 25th.
The nominees for officers were as follows: Jerry Skrypzak for
President, Ed Kissell for VP, Ralph Corvaglia for Secretary, Terry
Pfeffer for Treasurer. There were no other nominations for these
positions so the nominations were closed. These individuals will
continue to serve as our officers in 2014. Nominations for four
director’s positions were also taken. Joe Bruno, Bill Henderson,
Gary Heubel, Kevin Lubak, Chuck Miller and Jack Bock were
nominated to fill these posts. Our officers serve one year terms

2013 WAS ANOTHER GREAT YEAR
2013 brought with it a great deal of accomplishment for the
S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie. Hard work by our membership crew kept our
membership roster above 3000. We taught over 800 kids how to fish
at 30 fishing clinics. Our volunteer roster grew to 168 hardworking
members who worked over 2800 hours at these clinics as well our
hatchery operation, our Ice Out Party, the Erie Sport and Travel
Expo, the Winterfest, Presque Isle Clean Up, Cascade Creek Clean
Up, Out Reach Fish Fry, the LEAF festival and twenty gun raffles.
We also sponsored two veterans’ fishing outings. We were called
upon to showcase Erie’s great fishery by hosting other events for
other organizations such as the Erie Western Pennsylvania Port
Authority, CZM, Lake Erie Perca Management Advisory Group
and the PFBC.
We participated in the Perry 200 Celebration by presenting the
flags of the states that were part of the Union at the beginning of
the War of 1812 at the opening ceremonies. Our volunteers spent
countless hours building a float and entering it into the Perry 200
Grand Parade. We sponsored the “Perry 200 Fishing Challenge”,
a summer long fishing event. We provided a sponsorship for the
permanent memorial to those sailors and soldiers who lost their
lives during the Battle of Lake Erie in the name of the S.O.N.S.
deceased members.
We purchased a new tank for a sturgeon that is housed at the TREC
center and provided 14 new life rings for Presque Isle State Park.
We sponsored and built twenty two fish habitat structures which
were placed in the Bay.
WOMEN IN THE
OUTDOORS ON THE
RISE
GLSFC Newsletter
The traditional image of men escaping
for the weekend to experience the thrill
and challenge of outdoor activities such
as hunting, fishing and shooting may
be disappearing. Annie, it seems, has
definitely got her gun, and hunting license
and fishing rod and reel. In fact, according
to Women in the Outdoors in 2012, an indepth report on women’s participation in
outdoor recreation compiled by Southwick
Associates, Women now make up more
than a quarter of all anglers and represent
the fastest growing segment within the
hunting and shooting communities making
up as much as nearly 11 percent of all
hunters. The report available at http://www.

WALKWAY BUILT AT GAF SITE
A twelve foot wide walkway has been completed around the outside perimeter of the
former GAF property. The 12.5-acre property which once housed a GAF roofing shingle
plant was purchased by the Convention Center Authority for $3 million in December
2010. The site on Erie’s bayfront was the former property of the Rubberoid Co another
producer of roofing shingles and prior to that it was the Watson Co. GAF closed its
asphalt shingle plant in 2007 and demolished it in 2010.
Over 100 years of contamination
produced by these shingle
companies needed to be cleaned
up in order to ready the site for future
development. The State provided
roughly $7 million to finance the
GAF cleanup. The site clean-up
has been completed and a 905-foot
steel sheet piling sea wall -- at a
cost of nearly $1.6 million was also
finished.
Now the walkway is complete and hopefully it will be made accessible to the public
soon. There is however a flaw in the design of the project. No stairs into the water
have been built into the seawall. This will inhibit any access to the ice in the winter or
rescue attempts in the event of an accident.
IN CASE WE GET ICE
With the hope that we get sufficient ice for fishing this winter, we are including the
publication of the chart that demonstrates the recommended ice thicknesses for weight
support. REMEMBER NO ICE IS COMPLETELY SAFE AND ACT ACCORDINGLY!!

We attracted a lot of people to our events. Attendance at our general
membership meetings averaged over 70 attendees. We sponsored
the Presque Isle Clean Up providing lunch for over 800 volunteers.
Our Outreach Fish fry attracted over 170 guests. Our Ice Out Party
brought in over 500 attendees. The Sport Expo gave us exposure to
over 8000 people. The gun shows brought in 1000’s of others. We
mailed out over 30,000 newsletters. We sure made our presence
known in the area.
All of the accomplishments which are the result of the great support
of our members make the S.O.N.S. a well-known and respected
organization.
Happy New Year!
