Lady Eagles get two softball wins
Colby High School’s softball
team finally got to play Scott City
and Russell Monday in Scott City.
And Colby got two more wins.
What was scheduled as Colby’s
first game of the season March 27
was postponed because of weather.
Colby defeated Russell 8-1.
Colby pitcher Logan Wark earned
the victory allowing one unearned
run, one hit and 15 strikeouts.
At the plate, Lauren Cox had a
triple. Wark, Jordan Kryzcki,
Ashley Barnes and Leah Cox all had
a hit. Colby was walked 10 times.
Colby defeated Scott City 13-2.
Brittany Kersenbrock and Tisha
Bieker combined for the win. They
allowed two runs, three hits and six
strikeouts.
Brena Jones and Lauren Cox
each went 3-4 at the plate. All of
Jones’ hits were triples. Ashley
Barnes was 2-4, Leah Cox and
Tisha Bieker, 1-2; Kersenbrock, 13 with a triple; Kristin Cox, 1-3;
Krzycki, 1-2 and Wark, 1-5.
Only Colby varsity (6-1) plays
Goodland 4 p.m. Friday in Colby.
The junior varsity team plays Saturday at Lakin.
Junior Varsity
Colby’s junior varsity team defeated Ulysses in a doubleheader
April 3, 11-1, 13-0.
In game one, Lauren Dougherty
led with one single and two RBIs.
Dani Dietz, Rhett Martin, Chanelle
Staats and Whitney Ritter each had
a RBI. Staats was the winning
pitcher. She had five strikeouts.
In game two, Colby had 13 runs
on three hits. Dietz had two hits and
Keesa Wright had one hit. Staats
replaced Bieker on the mound.
Staats had five strikeouts.
At Garden City April 9, Colby
lost the doubleheader 7-2, 10-5.
In game one, Dietz and Paige
Stephens each had a RBI. Lindsey
Frahm and Whitney Ritter each had
a hit.
In game two, Wright had three
RBIs. Dietz and Dougherty each
had a RBI. Staats pitched and struck
out five.
Colby junior varsity is 2-2.

summer camp at Colby in July

Colby baseball team wins two
The Colby High School Eagle
baseball team beat Holcomb in both
games of a home doubleheader
Tuesday.
The Eagles won 11-0 and 11-1.
Levi Schlick pitched five innings
in the second game. He faced 18
hitters and had 10 strikeouts, and
gave up one run. He also had one
error.
Kevin Lang lead the offense at the
plate with three runs. Trenton
Powell, Mitchell Gatz and Joe
Heier all had two runs each. Cade
Carter and Cory Sager rounded out
the scoring with one run apiece.
Lang, Gatz and Sager also had
two RBIs each. Stephen Dinkel had
one.
In the first game, Heier lead the
offense with three runs. He was followed by Kirt Dugger and Sager
who had two runs apiece.
Rounding out the scoring with
one run each were Stephen Dinkel,
Mitchell Gatz, Lang and Carter.
Gatz’s run was a home run.
Gatz lead the team in RBIs with
three. Carter had two and Sager,
Lang and Trenton Powell had one
each.
Powell was the winning pitcher,
pitching five innings.
He faced 19 hitters, giving up two
hits. He struck out five batters and
had no errors.
NBA referee suspended for conduct
NEW YORK (AP) — Joey
Crawford is done ejecting players
and coaches this season. On Tuesday, he was the one getting tossed.
The veteran NBA referee was
suspended indefinitely by commissioner David Stern for his conduct
toward Tim Duncan, who contends
the official challenged him to a fight
during a game in Dallas.
Crawford has worked more
postseason games than any active
ref. His suspension will last at least
2007
through the NBA finals, and he apparently will have to meet with
Stern after that to discuss reinstatement.
“Especially in light of similar
prior acts by this official, a significant suspension is warranted,”
Stern said in a statement. “Although
Joey is consistently rated as one of
our top referees, he must be held
accountable for his actions on the
floor, and we will have further discussions with him following the
season to be sure he understands his
responsibilities.”
Crawford ejected Duncan from
San Antonio’s loss after calling a
second technical foul on the Spurs
star while he was laughing on the
bench.
“He looked at me and said, ’Do
you want to fight? Do you want to
fight?”’ Duncan said. “If he wants
to fight, we can fight. I don’t have
any problem with him, but we can
do it if he wants to.”
Area basketball players are invited to attend a Jeff Boschee basketball camp July 19-20 at Colby
High School.
The camp will feature Jeff
Boschee, University of Kansas basketball player from 1998-2002. Jeff
was a four-year starter at KU on
teams that won a conference championship, a conference tournament
championship and was in a NCAA
Final Four. Jeff holds KU’s all-time
three point field goals made record
and is second all-time in games
started at the University of Kansas.
Instruction at the camp will emphasize the individual fundamentals of shooting, ball handling and
defense. In shooting, techniques
covered will be feet, arms and hands
placement, eyes, and follow
through. In ball handling, five basic passes and five basic dribbles
will be taught. In defense, proper
stance and movement will be
taught.
Directing the clinic will be David
Devaney.
He has coached on the high
school, college, and professional
level and he was basketball graduate assistant at the University of
Kansas for two years. Helping with
the clinic will be current Kansas
players from the University of Kansas basketball team.
The clinic will be for two days.
The clinic will be co-ed and cost $75
per player. Players going into
grades 3-6 in the fall of 2007 will
have their two-day clinic from 10
a.m.-noon on July 19 and 20.
Players going into grades 7-9 in
the fall of 2007 will have their twoday clinic from 2-4 p.m. on July 1920, The camp fee will include a
basketball and T-shirt and an autograph session.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New
York Yankees honored Jackie
Robinson by dedicating a memorial
in Monument Park to the former
Brooklyn Dodgers star.
Yankees manager Joe Torre,
shortstop Derek Jeter, closer
Mariano Rivera and second
baseman Robinson Cano, who is
named after the Hall of Fame second baseman, helped unveil the
plaque during a ceremony before
New York played the Cleveland
Indians.
The text of the plaque reads: “In
becoming the first Major League
player to break the color barrier,
Jackie will forever be an inspiration
with his grace, dignity and perseverance. His story and the stories of
those who never had the same opportunity must never be forgotten.”
In addition, Robinson’s No. 42
was painted along the baselines for
Tuesday night’s game.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Saint Louis
coach Brad Soderberg was fired
after five seasons, a move tied to the
school’s new $80.5 million arena
under construction and his failure to
produce an NCAA tournament bid.
The school announced the move
in a statement that said the success
of the Chaifetz Arena, scheduled to
open for the 2008-09 season, was
contingent on a program that could
contend for conference championships.
The school made Angres Thorpe
as interim head men’s basketball
coach while it seeks a replacement.
