US 31, South Traverse City, MI 49684 Registration: 8:30am Training: 9:00am - 4:00pm The Michigan Department of Community Health, through the Michigan Association of CMH Boards, has provided funding for this initiative through the Federal Community Mental Health Block Grant. TRAINING DESCRIPTION: This session will address dementia as it occurs among persons who use CMH services. Symptoms and the course of various types of dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, and Frontotemporal dementia) will be described, as well as its co-occurrence with mental illness. Misdiagnosis of dementia, the effects of brain changes in dementia on cognition, behavior, and functioning, and finally implications for intervention will be discussed. Non-pharmacological intervention strategies that address dementia and are individualized to the person, disorder, and situation will be explored. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Dementia and the CMH Population’ was created for all CMHSP workers and providers who come into contact (briefly or otherwise) with persons who use CMH services. Join us as we learn ways to recognize evidence of dementia in the people we see (e.g., ways in which MI and dementia might look similar or different) and helpful ways to intervene. (Not for ACT teams - Teams have had a similar training with “Mental Illness and Dementia: What is Going On and How Can I Help?) LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. 2. 3. Identify behaviors in dementia that look like behaviors in MI Identify common types of dementia Describe communication interventions in dementia CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: The Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards (MACMHB), provider #1140, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. MACMHB maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 11/10/13-11/10/16. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval.
