HOW TO PLAN A HIKE IN DOMINICA?
There are three options to plan a hike in Dominica:
1. Let an official tour operator or tour guide association plan it for you, or
2. Do it yourself, or
3. Contact the Waitukubuli National Trail Management Unit to guide you.
OPTION 1 – Using a Tour Operator or Tour Guide Association

Discuss your interest(s) and preference(s) with the tour operator or tour guide association on
the following:

Accommodation or homestay preferences
Meal and snack options
Transfers
Budget
Safety procedures
Certified trail tour guide
Eco-tourism, Kalinago Barana Autê and WNT conservation passes

segments of the trail in the guide book and / or visit www.waiukubulitrail.com. Conclude plans

Alternatively, your hotel may provide such assistance. Transfers may include drop off and pick
up at specific locations. If moving from one accommodation to another, arrange for luggage
transfer.
Contact the tour guide association for a certified trail tour guide through your accommodation
or transport provider. Discuss the following:
Hike intensity and average duration
Appropriate clothing
Meeting point
Attractions of interest
Meal and snack options
Safety procedures.
Determine if ecotourism sites, Kalinago Barana Autê (KBA) and WNT conservation passes are
required. Contact Forestry, Wildlife and National Park Division at 767-266-5856; the KBA in the
Kalinago Territory at 767-445-7979 or via email: kbamanager@cwdom.dm; and the WNT MU at
767-440-6125, 767-266-3593 or via email: wntp@cwdom.dm.
Exchange contact information with tour guide, police, taxi driver, accommodation provider.
Prepare overall budget.
After hike, check in (call) at point of registration to indicate return.

If you plan on hiking the WNT on your own, a thorough read of the Waitukubuli National Trail is
recommended. Visit www.waiukubulitrail.com and www.discoverdominica.com.
Select which segment(s) you wish to hike over a given period.
Check the accommodation and homestay options, if you wish to stay at locations near the entry
/ exit points of the segment(s) or if you wish to stay at one location. See options on
www.waiukubulitrail.com, www.discoverdominica.com and www.kalinagoterritory.com.
Secure a Waitukubuli National Trail certified tour guide.
Refer to the ‘Hiking Safety Tips’ section on the website.
Register as a hiker at the WNT Management Unit (WNT MU) to inform of your plans. Download
the hiker registration form. Fill it out and provide a copy to accommodation (if returning), or
the nearest police station or the WNT MU.
Additionally, contact the WNT MU at 767-266-3593 to provide your contact information and as
an option to purchase eco-tourism and or conservation passes.
OPTION 3 - Contact the Waitukubuli National Trail Management Unit to guide you
