They are assisted in this by experienced medical radiology technicians, medical support staff, case managers and teaching assistants. In four treatment rooms, the WPE is one of the first centres in Germany and Europe to offer patients all methods of proton therapy. As well as this there is a specially-equipped eye treatment room which is operated in close collaboration with University Hospital of Essen (UHE) Ophthalmology Unit. WPE patients also benefit from the way the Centre is an integral part of the clinical environment at UHE: As a particle therapy clinic, the WPE is an integral part of the West German Tumour Centre, Essen (WTZ), which offers comprehensive medical care in oncology and is one of the leading inpatient and outpatient tumour centres in Germany. “The WPE augments the WTZ perfectly: Working together with the aid of proton therapy, we‘re able to offer the best possible treatment to children and adults with tumours in sensitive tissue areas, such as the head, spine or pelvic areas, who would otherwise be difficult to treat”, says Prof Dr Dirk Schadendorf, Director of the WTZ. Proton therapy offers the opportunity to apply effective, high-dosage radiotherapy to large tumours deep inside the body surrounded by sensitive vital organs such as the lungs, the liver or the brain stem. nBetter chances of a cure It goes without saying that the team also works with referring doctors to ensure patients are advised and treated in line with their own specific needs. Proton therapy radiation releases its energy almost exclusively within the tumour itself. In this way, it protects healthy tissue and enables faster healing with fewer side effects than conventional radiotherapy. The WPE approach convinced both public and professionals even before it was opened: In addition to medical and scientific awards, the Centre also received the “365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” award. nReduced side effects Your contact: Proton therapy is easier for the body to cope with because the radiation is applied to a very specific target area. In this way it minimises the risk of subsequent tumours. This advantage especially benefits children, whose growth and development make it important to afford tissue special protection.
