Lanterman`s Mill - Youngstown State University
About the
This guide is provided as a service to the
many teachers and other educators who
visit the facilities of the Mahoning
Cultural Collaborative.
The Mahoning Cultural Collaborative is composed of local non-profit institutions that are
field trip destinations for many area schools. It
is a unique collaboration working together to
meet the needs of educators, students and local
residents. Our goal is to increase public awareness of our local cultural institutions through
programming and group promotion.
This guide contains basic information about
scheduling field trips at our facilities. Public
information is included as a source for students
investigating and/or researching on their own.
Because some of our facilities are very close
together, especially in the YSU area, schools are
encouraged to schedule more than one destination per field trip to maximize the educational
experience and make the best use of transportation funding.
Information was correct at the time of printing. Program titles, hours,
admission charges, and contact people may change with time.
Updates will be made as needed to the on-line version
of this guide, available in downloadable pdf format at
www.mahoningculture.org

Revised Edition - Early 2010
Penguins
Several of the MCC
Institutions have penguin
sculptures that were part of
the Penguin Parade, a public
art project presented by
Youngstown State University
and the Community
Foundation of the Mahoning
Valley. “Find the Penguin”
might make a fun addition
to your field trip. For more
information about all the
penguins, please check
http://www.ysu.edu/
penguinparade.
The Penguin Parade
curriculum found at www.
fpa.ysu.edu/smarts/ was
developed so that teachers
can use the penguins as
learning tools and for local
field trips as a base for
literacy through the arts.
Each lesson is created to
branch many concepts
together for extended
learning so that teachers can
easily tie them into other
lessons, integrated study or
multicultural study, as well
as expand on ideas, and
assessments. The curriculum
is a combination of 31
lessons to address the 3
levels of our public school
systems.

Welcome to
Lanterman’s
Mill
Upon entering the mill,
one is given the rare opportunity of stepping into
the past–into an era experienced by our ancestors.
While in the mill, observe the pioneer ingenuity involved in the early
production of meal and flour. Smell the sweet aroma of freshly ground
grains. Hear the gentle trickle of water as it flows toward the wheel.
Feel the rumbling vibrations of the stones as they whirl, grinding the
various grains.
Visit the gift shop, which sells corn meal, buckwheat, and whole wheat
flour that are ground here. Enlarged and renovated in 1990, the gift
shop offers our own flour in colorful, decorative bags, note cards with
scenes by Ohio artists that depict Lanterman’s Mill and the Covered
Bridge, and many charming wares by local artisans.

The Planetarium offers public programs nearly every weekend at 8 p.m.
on Fridays and Saturdays and 1 and 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoons; the
matinee programs are geared for families and children.
The Ward Beecher Planetarium offers a wide variety of programs tied to
curriculum and aligned to such state standards as space science, Earth science, physical science, and astronomy/history of astronomy (technology,
scientific ways of knowing) for grades pre-school through high school and
adults. New programs and topics are added continually. Programs may be
presented live or recorded; all programs include a live segment on star and
constellation identification. Student questions are encouraged.
See the schedule at http://www.cc.ysu.edu/physics-astro/planet.htm, or
call the Department of Physics & Astronomy at (330) 941-3616 to ask for a
printed schedule and be added to our mailing list.
The best way to plan a field trip is to start with the Teacher’s Guide at
http://www.cc.ysu.edu/physics-astro/Guide/Teach.htm, which contains
most of the information you need. Field trips are arranged on an individual
basis. The use of e-mail to plan a field trip is quite acceptable.
All programs at the Ward Beecher Planetarium are free and open to the
public.
High school groups also may request a tour of the Physics Department.

For Lunch on/near the YSU Campus
If you plan to have lunch at any of the sites on or near
the YSU campus, an advance telephone call to them
is always appreciated.
If you plan to visit a campus facility, you MUST notify Chris Pullium in the
Kilcawley Center Room Reservations Office at (330) 941-3577 AND the
food area you wish to visit. Arrangements should be made well in advance
of your visit.
If you plan to bring sack lunches, there is an area of low concrete walls and
wooden benches near the fountain at the Kilcawley Student Center. Please
call Ms. Pullium if you plan to use this area or if you would like a lunch space
within Kilcawley Center. Food counters and vending machines for drinks, chips
and other snacks are widely available throughout Kilcawley Center.
For all lunch sites: try to time your lunch so it does not begin at the “top” of
the hour. Because most YSU classes end at 10 minutes before the top of the
hour, there are long lines at all sites from 10:50 a.m. through 1 p.m.
Located in Kilcawley Center
• Arby’s (330) 747-7001
Fast food with large seating area. If a large group is purchasing lunches,
may we suggest limiting your menu choices to one or two basic selections
(i.e. a regular Arby’s sandwich plus fries meal or chicken fingers plus fries
meal) and calling your order in ahead of time.
• Food Court (330) 941-3391
39
The Food Court is better suited to smaller groups of older students (ones
who can carry trays confidently). It is a self-serve, a-la-cart type of restaurant that offers a wide variety of hot and cold sandwiches, entrees,
tacos, and other foods.
Located just off campus
• McDonald’s, on Fifth at Scott Street across from the YSU Stadium
(330) 743-6112
• Taco Bell, on Fifth at Rayen across from the Lincoln Avenue
Parking Deck
(330) 746-4060
• University Pizzeria & Italian Eatery, on Lincoln Avenue across from Moser Hall
(330) 743-9244
• Coyoacan (Mexican fast food), beside University Pizzeria on Lincoln
Avenue
(330) 744-2444
• Inner Circle, on Lincoln Avenue at Elm Street
(330) 744-5448
• The Beat, on Lincoln Avenue across from the Lincoln Avenue Parking Deck
(330) 743-4227
• Subway, on Rayen Avenue at Elm Street
(330) 746-3924
All welcome groups but, because the lunch hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. are
always their busiest, they ask to be notified in advance so they may prepare
for your group. Please note that Inner Circle and University Pizzeria also serve
alcohol; non-smoking seating is available away from the bar areas. The Beat
is a coffee house and serves sandwiches, soup, and pastries.
Located within the
Butler Institute of American Art
Winslow’s Cafe (330) 743-8600
Hours of operation (independent of Butler hours):
Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, Friday Wednesday
Saturday
Sunday
7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
11 a.m. to –5 p.m.
Seating is better suited for small, older groups
(perhaps grade 7 and older).
