EGCC Scholarships to Help Women Succeed
Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC), Hard Hatted Women and YWCA Warren have joined together to help
prepare women for the skilled workforce. EGCC is offering
scholarships for women interested in pursuing trade and technical careers through WISE (Women In Sustainable Employment) Pathways.
WISE Pathways is a 45-hour career exploration and readiness
workshop that highlights careers in energy, skilled manufacturing and construction. Through panel presentations by employers, training providers and women already working successfully in these fields, participants learn what opportunities
exist; what they need to do to be strong candidates for them;
and what it’s really like to be a woman in a nontraditional career. WISE Pathways students also acquire
core skills in teambuilding, communication, conflict resolution and dealing with sexual harassment. Site
visits and hands-on projects give women concrete experience on which to base career decisions.
WISE Pathways participants will be enrolled as students at EGCC and will earn three credit hours toward an Associate of Technical Study degree. Classes will be held at the YWCA in Warren. Cost of the
course is $315. Eastern Gateway will provide scholarships for about a dozen women taking these classes.
“Hard Hatted Women is grateful for support from the U.S. Department of Labor and for the partnership
of Eastern Gateway and the YWCA Warren. Women are often clustered in low-wage occupations with
no benefits and few opportunities to advance. WISE Pathways gives women the tools they need to get
on the path to long-term economic security,” said Chrisse France, Hard Hatted Women Board President.
The U.S. Department of Labor has allocated $200,000 to Hard Hatted Women for its Tradeswomen
TOOLS model in Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Trumbull Counties, including the WISE Pathways program.
WISE Pathways is 50 percent supported by the federal funds. Hard Hatted Women is a statewide,
non-profit, agency that matches female talent to industry demand by developing a pipeline of qualified
female candidates in growing high-wage industries, such as energy and utilities, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and construction. The work engages women and girls in critical STEM pathways
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) that strengthen the financial security of families and the
economic competitiveness of communities. For more information, call (877) 353-1114, ext 34.

Shale Training Comes to Columbiana County
Page 3
Eastern Gateway Community College will host May 21 an information session
on shale industry training at the Columbiana County Career & Technical Center, Lisbon. Open to the public, the event will provide information on entrylevel jobs, training programs, program requirements and application process
details. The session will be from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.
“The gas industry has clearly stated its preference for a local workforce and is
committed to hiring local employees as fast as workers can be identified and
trained,” said Tracee Joltes, assistant director of workforce outreach at EGCC.”
The biggest challenge to building a well-prepared local workforce for the gas
industry rests in recruitment and pre-employment training for this industry
especially because of its unique culture. Eastern Gateway will offer recruitment
and pre-employment training in high-priority occupations, targeted by the
ShaleNET grant, which include; derrick operator, rotary drill operator, service
unit operator, roustabout, welder/brazer and CDL. Successful graduates of these programs will possess the
entry level skills and aptitudes necessary for successful entrance into the industry,” Joltes added.
Eastern Gateway has been working to develop relationships with local oil and gas companies to support
the ShaleNET training efforts. Work sites have been made available to the trainees and companies have
committed to interview successful completers as their workforce needs dictate, she said.
As a partner to the ShaleNET grant, the college applied for training funding to offer these initial classes
for free or at discounted rates. The ShaleNET grant – Marcellus ShaleNET – a comprehensive recruitment,
training, placement and retention strategy for jobs in the Marcellus Shale gas industry was launched in
2011 with a $4.964M community-based job training grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration. Eastern Gateway is the only Ohio college participating in the grant
program. For more details or to schedule training, call (740) 264-5591 or (800) 682-6553, ext. 310.
