Like
A cajon (pronounced /ka'xɔn/) is a wooden box drum producing both a bass and a snare drum
sound. It is not too hard and very rewarding to build.

Use 3 mm (or 1/8 inch) plywood for the tapa, or striking facade (purple in the
schematic), size 320 mm by 484 mm (or 13 inch by 19 inch), and use 12 mm (or 1/2

Cut out the required sheets of plywood. Make sure the cuts are very straight, clamp a
ruler to the sheet and use a jig saw or circular saw.

Drill a hole towards the edge of the marked sound hole, and use that as a starting
point to cut out the sound hole with a jig saw. Round the edges somewhat to facilitate
airflow. The hole is 12cm in diameter.

Lay out the sheets in the way you want to join them, and prepare a way to put the
cajon under tension. Big clamps are ideal, but luggage straps will do.

Apply plenty of wood glue. Put the top, bottom, rear and sides together and align them
to the best of your ability. Apply tension for a sufficient amount of time (depends on the
glue, read the instructions). Wipe off any excess glue with a wet cloth.

Prepare and construct snare

Clamp or strap the tapa to the box and align it. Mark the screw locations and drill
holes 1mm smaller than the screws. Now take off the tapa and widen the holes in it to the
screw size, with a drill of the screw size. Use a countersink cutter to make room for the
screw heads. Put the tapa back on and screw it in place. Hand-tighten the screws, it is all
too easy to rip through the thin plywood with power tools.

Cut out feet from leftover pieces of wood and screw them to the bottom. Rubber
