BIOTECHNOLOGY PROGRAM The partnership of Allentown School District, Sacred Heart Hospital, Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI) and Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) is pleased to invite you to participate in a unique biotechnology program which combines dual enrollment college level courses, an introductory course in biotechnology fundamentals and laboratory applications and job shadowing in a health care setting. The program is designed for high school seniors interested in the broad field of biotechnology. The biotechnology program will expose students to the career opportunities within the biotechnology industry and prepare them for post‐secondary education by offering college courses. Students will earn a total of six general education credits through the coursework with LCCC. WHAT IS BIOTECHNOLOGY? In simple terms, biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms or systems to manufacture products to improve the quality of human life. It is a diverse field that includes, but is not limited to: medical, pharmaceutical products and immunology, environmental biotechnology, forensics, genetics, microbiology, nanotechnology and agriculture. WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE? This course is ideal for students interested in the fields of biology, biotechnology, life sciences and nanotechnology. Potential careers are phlebotomist, research technician, biomedical technician, geneticist, laboratory assistant, medical technicians and pharmaceutical manufacturing and research and development. WHY SHOULD I TAKE THIS COURSE? The program of study offers engaging academics, lab experiments, career exploration, workplace experiences and mentoring. You will participate in dual‐enrollment courses with the Lehigh Carbon Community College that can be transferable to a variety of postsecondary programs. At Sacred Heart Hospital you will have the opportunity to learn about the career opportunities at various skill levels within the biotechnology industry through job shadowing. PROGRAM OF STUDY Academic content will be presented in two related programs: Foundations in Biotechnology and Applications in Biotechnology. Through a combination of theory and lab applications the program will include specialized topics such as microbiology, bioprocessing, genetic engineering, forensics, biochemistry, bioengineering and nanotechnology, the role of biotechnology in medicine, agriculture and the environment and bioethics. Continued on reverse side SCHEDULE Biotechnology is a half‐day program that runs the duration concurrently with the school year. Students will be in class at their respective high school for one‐half of the school day and attend the biotechnology class at Sacred Heart Hospital in Allentown for the other half of the school day. During the half‐day that the students are at Sacred Heart Hospital, they will participate in a dual enrollment course offered by Lehigh Carbon Community College. This course may be offered at Sacred Heart Hospital or at the LCCC site in Center City Allentown. APPLICATION PROCESS The program application is available from high school guidance counselors. Application deadline is April 30th, 2012. Students will be selected for participation by a committee of representatives for the program partners. Students will be notified of the status of their application after April 30th, 2012. Click here for the application. STUDENT ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS Students who wish to apply must: Attend an Allentown School District High School and be entering their senior year. Complete and submit application by April 30th, 2012. Have an overall 3.0 (B) or better grade point average (GPA) Have completed at least one year each of high school chemistry and biology with a 3.0 or better GPA. Have excellent attendance records, as defined by sending school district. Provide a written recommendation from high school guidance counselor and one from a science teacher. Meet the academic prerequisites for the LCCC courses in which they plan to enroll, including pre‐assessment testing. An interview may be required. If accepted, participation in this program is contingent upon student submittal of all requirements, including: Health certification signed by health care professional. Completed TB questionnaire (plus additional TB testing, if required). Required orientation paperwork. Students must commit to completing the entire school‐year long program. TUITION Allentown School District has a federal grant through 2012/2013 that may cover tuition and other costs. TRANSPORTATION Students will be provided with bus transportation from their high school to Sacred Heart Hospital and return to their high school at the end of the class session.
